For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

I did not know that Aram Von Benedikt and Joseph Von Benedikt (who does pieces for Ron Spomer Outdoors) are twin brothers, growing up on a self sustaining
farm in Utah. I will be interested when all the details finally come to light. As to 700 yard shots, we're supposed to be hunting, not just shooting. At the distances the long-range "hunters" boast about, there is not a scrap of Sportsmanship left. Might as well use a mortar.
What does their religion have to do with this ? Would you have left a comment if they were Catholics or Jews ?

I got a little insight into some of those long shots. Two stories were from from a fellow Joseph Von Benedikt was interviewing on his podcast. Both stories began "It was the last day of my 5-day hunt." In other words, they were determined to get an animal on an expensive hunting trip and finally decided that a long shot was better than going home empty handed. Some might argue that the hunter should not have taken those shots, but, in their defense, they had practiced shooting at 700 or so yards and regularly did so in competitions. Both shots were successful. Me, I wouldn't have even considered it since I know I am not that good.
@@jfess1911 Interesting insight for sure. I guess that I would hope that a shot that was not acceptable on day 1 would not be acceptable on day 5; it would be worse to wound an animal as your trip expires, and not be able to attempt to find it. Perhaps no other shots were available throughout the trip, and the long shot was the only one presented. I imagine it would take quite a bit of self-discipline to pass up the shot and accept the "0". I like Ron's idea of the 1/3 second flight time as the range limit. It seems like part of the problem with the long range stuff is that you have really accomplished, accurate shooters but if the animal moves while the bullet is in flight, it can all go to heck. I also, would not have considered it; I'm not that good either.

Aram's own statement is what sunk his ship ...not "gossip" at that point.
Rachelle's post made Aram out to be an Ass, Aram's 5 pages of responses confirmed it. Everyone calling it hearsay, or that we dont have both sides of the story, is only saying that because Aram's posts have since been deleted.

How when he put the kill shot on it that deer might of survived her shot or died the next day or even 5 hours later of her shot she still would of lost it he didn't know she shot it he seen a deer shot it and dropped it sounds like his deer to me seems like she's getting favorites cuz she's a girl if it was some dude who shot it first know one would be feeling bad for him stop simping for her to bad so sad public land hunting goes like that

Steel targets usually don't move at 700 yards but game animals do. Enough said
Funny that both an expert and novice misjudged a long range shot on the same deer. What ever happened to ethics? That deer suffered needlessly.

I'm with you concerning the Aram affair: let's cancel the drama and take away some lessons. The one point you didn't mention that can be teachable is: experienced hunters need to be ambassadors, not adversaries to new hunters (the other shooter).
Hunting isn’t a competition like some hunters think! It’s a journey that’s about enjoying the trip and not coming home with the biggest trophy! If that’s the case then your cheating your self out of one of life’s greatest things!

Hey Ron, just wanted to say I’m a big fan of your videos, especially a video I saw of yours from a few years ago, called “Dad wasn’t a hunter”. It was a lovely tribute to your father, and made me miss my own dad all the more (died April 8th 2023). You and my dad inspired me to get my first hunting rifle, a weatherby mark v custom deluxe in 6.5-300 WM. Just wanted to say thanks and to keep up the great work :)

Ron on the Aram controversy you nailed it. Both sides did wrong as has all of us to some degree. The rest of us should learn from it and our own mistakes. I think Aram sunk his own ship with his statements. As the pro hunter I do hold him to a higher standard but he should be able to redeem himself. He would go a long way with owning his mistakes and not casting vague statements at the other side.

Thanks Ron we all can stand to look at and reflect on things that most of us have at sometime or another are not proud of, and let the story play out and hopefully we will find out what really happened and those people are sorry for what happened.
Another fan of yours that watches you because you communicate objectively and knowledgably... with a strong flavor of authentic goofy that makes your videos fun. You genuinely seem like a nice guy to hang out with!
I agree with you about the issue 100% Ron. None of us have any business accusing anyone in that incident because we weren’t there. What we are supposed to do is learn from these things to add to our own hunting ethics. Nobody’s perfect. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to be.

I appreciate the content and always will. We all have to make up our own minds. I also see that being a friend of Aram makes this difficult. This is not cancel culture though. I don’t care who you are the man took a deer that was already hit by another hunter - Aram admits in his statement he heard a hit. Truthfully it seems both of the shots that connected on that deer seem to be pushing the bounds of ethics for me but I won’t vilify anyone for taking a shot they feel is within their personal effective range but the man heard the hit and then took final shots and claimed the deer. From a man trying to portray an old school set of ethics in the field he sure didn’t show them here. The world we live in is one of shared information. It’s not cancel culture in this case it’s just letting the world know what some men will do for an article or content.

As we get older hunting means so much more especially with our sons and friends as we never know when it might be our last hunt!

Well you do not have to cancel someone to condemn their actions. I read his side of the story, and i feel he was not being honest nor professional. Unfortunately his ego got the best of him. A real man would have just admitted they were wrong. That's all anyone truly asks. If i had a friend that did something as he did, i would be sure to give him a piece of my mind. That's what friends do. At this point maybe Aram should just have the Buck mounted and presented to her. And have the meat packaged as well and given to her. Sometimes in life you have to put a little salt and pepper on that crow and admit what you did was wrong.

Excellent advise on sighting a rifle in. Most guides will tell you take longer than 3 seconds to shoot, the kill ratio goes down by 50%. In what I consider to be ethical hunting distances 450 yds or less, I trust the maximum point blank over dials. Depending on what game I am hunting, I memorize the height of the torso, top of back to center mass of torso, & top of head when held up to centerline if torso. I can usually get shots off in 1 to 2 seconds averaging about 1.5 seconds. Also, I work on 2nd and 3rd shot follow up speed and accuracy.
The 3 second rule has been around so 60+ years because it was told to me way back them by my grandfather who was a retired military marksman!
This shot sequence and timing issue has been heavily studied in archery, because waiting at full draw gets old fast, even though many people claim to be able to hold for a minute or more. But the science shows that most shooters who are stuck at low performance are there because the speed at which they can execute the shot is greater than that for which they can hold the bow steady. But this affects rifles also. One, because it is good to know what your execution time is, and not rush it (you can snap off shots, just so long as you realize how badly you will shoot, and have that in the equation). Two, because while the issue is less disastrous with rifles, the ability to hold in positions like standing can collide with execution time.
Hunting scopes should be very simple . Less change for mistakes .

Lead sleds also mess with the barrel harmonics, so the group you’re seeing down range isn’t the true group or point of impact that you’ll see on the field.
Love listening to your podcast. I've always enjoyed hunting. For many years where I live we were only allowed to hunt dear and bear with shotgun slug. Even after being allowed to use rifle I still used shotgun and had to pass up many dear that were out of range. I think that was training for me to be aware of my limitations even with a rifle now that I've had one for a while. Even here with limited sight distance (400 yd max) I see ones shoot past their limitations. I hope that I always remember this and don't let excitement rule me. So easy to let that happen. Again I really enjoy your podcast.

Got a bunch of blunted/bent tip bullets and it was due to hard shipping and bullets slightly moving in box. It can a does happen
If you have open tip bullets then you want to make sure tip is normal as the round can fold over instead of opening. I usually run a tiny drill bit into my bergers to make sure tips are uniform
I to have noticed in more than 1 box of the Winchester power point 6.5 creedmoor 129 grain deformed tips but they still give me the 2nd best groups out of my model 70 extreme hunter

The man unwilling to condemn his friend's unethical behaviors should tell us all what's ethical?
The Lead Sled issue is real but is not limited to stock damage, it can also affect the scope and rings. There are several accounts of the recoil energy shifting, or dislodging, the crosshairs. I've personally seen slide marks on the scope from it shifting through the rings. Yes, improper torque is possible, but not likely. It probably wouldn't have shifted being fired from the shoulder.
Ron, when you were explaining maximum point blank range it seemed to remind me of an article I saw many years ago by (I think) Jim Carmichael. It was called the non-thinking man's trajectory table. I kept it for many years, but sadly loaned it out and lost it. Always enjoy your podcasts and videos. Very informative and entertaining.
Ross Seyfried wrote an article on how point blank thinking was wrong. Interesting take. One part I remember was his contention that in all his guiding, people who had not verified their drops at the ranges they would shoot with the PB method, missed a lot. The idea one could zero at 100 and then rely on what the bullet would do from there on out, was not reliable. I don't know if modern tech has improved on that thinking. Frankly don't see why it would.
Ron stays rightious because he bases his PB system on a small target 6 inches on deer sized game, I think it what he has said. 10 inches is the actual size of a deer kill zone, in many cases, but if you cut it way back, then PB has a fudge factor and is more reliable.
Good view on ethical distances which I share. But 1/3 of a second translates to around 270 yards in a 6,5x55 / CM shooting SST 140 at 2700 fps. And ½ a second will make you reach 390 yards.
Great vid as always Ron !... The information that many base their criticism on Ron in terms of Aram was actually based on information he released himself... TOTALLY agree on the 1/3sec rule AND hunting circumstances eg hunting in desert conditions vs bush and brush .... but all said and done no matter were the 1/3sec rule is a very good rule of thumb for a decently capable hunter... BUT if your limitations is greater than the 1/3 sec rule then that should take precedence and that can extend to many factors ... your eye sight capability, your calibre you hunting with etc etc
Another issue in the long range world that comes up in this case is that if everyone were to shoot from 700 yards there is a much larger piece of real estate involved. A circle with a radius of 700 yards, which is what we are talking about when any two shooters, might attempt a shot at the same game that is 700 yards away, is an area of 320 acres. So now, you need to be aware of what is going on in an area of 320 acres. I would suggest that unless some of these snipers have an AWACs circling overhead, or a satellite, they may not have the situational awareness that hunting on public land requires, to cut loose these shots.
Rule 4 is be sure of your target. That also gets more difficult the further away it is particularly if there is any cover involved.
Ron, Your 1/3 second is spot on especially the new straight wall cartridges. Most around 2100, that relates to 700 FPS in .33 sec. however it’s not going 2100 the entire distance of say a 150 yd shot, it has not traveled 700 ft or in 1/3 sec. I have had 3 instances where in the case of .44 magnum at 115 yards the deer moved forward as I was squeezing the trigger and the impact was a spine shot behind the shoulder. I have also had similar results a greater than 150 with .350 Legend. Aiming Point being high shoulder for dropping on impact. When bow hunting years ago shots at 25-35 yards always aimed low and forward as the deer always crouched and lunged at arrow release. I never lost a hit deer as I used my Siberian as a tracker. Over shooting at distances not practice is unethical at best. After spending thousands on equipment, and hunting arrangements, and licenses why would you not have ranger finder and find a place where you can set up the farthest ethical shot you’re capable of taking. Like others I appreciate your perspective and light hearted when sharing time in your podcast. Recognizing the need for schooling for long range hunting is certainly a winning combination. Physical exposure and experience trumps reading and watching videos ALONE as your ONLY source for the HUNT OF A LIFETIME GUIDELINES. Keep us informed, laughing, and participating, for future generations.

Ron I love your response to the Aram story! It just saddens me to hear about these stores and the bad name it gives out sport which I love so much and coming from a 4th generation hunting family and my grandfather was a marksman in the military and my father was one of the best running deer target shooter I ever saw and his close friend was a friend of John Nosler and I have in the 60+ years of hunting and reloading and being a gun collector of rifles I think that once in a while the bad Utah hunting incident can be a refresher to us hunters on how important our behavior can effect others and the black eye it can give the sport! Getting back to your last video on training new hunters is one of the best videos I have seen in the past 20 years on training new hunters and you Ron do us proud by your behavior and attitude on all things hunting related!

I think the LRB m25 is a LRB Arms and M25 action is basically a M1A(M14) rifle
A lead sled is good for sighting in, just dont put too much weight on it, if any. I use it for only sighting in and working up loads. After that, you know it isnt the gun, its you. Practice as much as you can from different positions, that you may encounter while hunting. Also, if your shooting from a bipod or sticks, you may experience a point of aim shift and will need to adjust the sights or scope for that. With all that said, i only bought the lead sled, because i used to work on and shoot several guns a day.

I am not a lead sled guy either, but they are designed to carry barbell plates to add weight to the sled. The more you add the greater the moment of inertial, and the more likely something bad happens to your setup if violent recoil is involved. Without any added weight they are an OK benchrest setup, if not up to what is used in accuracy shooting. Certainly OK for zeroing.

Aram should have been a gentleman and let the lady have it either way. He is the so called professional / expert and understand he will have plenty of opportunities to get another. He really messed up and should just apologize at this point.
Is she a hunter or medieval maiden trapped by a dragon in need of rescue? She’s a fellow hunter, the fact that she is a woman is not relevant in any way. I’d agree giving deference to a new hunter, regardless of what their genitalia happens to be, is considered to be the proper course for many people including myself, but that’s a personal choice and by no means a obligation.

MPBR is not complicated but little understood. To your point, quicker for shooting up to MPBR but also requires much less “dialing” when stretching the legs!

Bloodshot, or bloody meat can be soaked in saltwater overnight to eliminate that metallic taste. Just be sure to rinse the meat before and after. It helps a lot.

Aron’s own account of the events are why he lost his job with Outdoor Life and why he has become one of the most vilified hunters in Utah. He deleted all of his comments once it became clear that his words were being used against him. Here are the problems with his own account of what happened. I read everything he wrote before he deleted it.
1. He admits to breaking the law and hunting without hunter orange hat, then tries to defend his illegal action by saying other (implying the young woman) broke the law worse, without giving any specifics.
2. He admits to hearing one of her shots hitting hitting the deer.
3. He admits to taking a 730 yard at a moving deer without range finding.
4. He made an unfounded accusation that the young woman may have know where the buck was because they might have had access to the buck’s radio collar data (Totally without evidence)
5. He did not take enough time to even see the buck well enough to know it had a collar on.
6. He admits to acting in such a way that could have been intimidating the young woman after the kill. There was an imbalance of power that day in the field.
Sadly, Arom missed a great opportunity to help a young hunter and have a cover story for Outdoor Life.
He turned a win-win into a lose-lose by his ego.
They both could have shared in the harvest if he had allowed her to tag the deer, then have a set of replica antlers made.
I am so sad for all involved. Arom is not a bad person, and we all make mistakes but his own words don’t constitute rumors or hearsay. I don’t want him canceled but some humility and honesty is needed here.
You really are painting him out to be something that nobody absolutely knows he is or not with one statement. A statement that you are strawmanning self righteously about a situation you know nothing about. For now as Ron mentioned being objective is what will win in the end and it is clear Outdoor Life letting him go is pandering to folks like you rather than reason.
Did you read his accounts? I did! If he had kept his mouth shut, he would have been better off.
There are a lot of hunters here in Utah who hate him with totally unjustified rage. I’m not one of them.
I actually tried to save his job with Outdoor Life in several communications with the Alex Robinson the editor.
No deer is worth the pain this has caused him. But he needs to own what he did wrong. A heart felt apology could go a long way.
I’m not for canceling anyone, but as hunters we need to do better.
I had not heard/read those things, Hoglefish, but this does shine new light on the incident. I agree he could have/should have stepped up and turned it into a win win. Sharing the meat and antlers would have been the best option. Could have even made the rack a traveling trophy, exchanging it between them year by year. Made new friends and memories. Ah, lots of options, but, again, Monday morning quarterbacking is always easier.
In my experience Winchester factory ammo is very hit or miss quality wise. The brass is most always dirty and stained, the different bullets designs with polymer tips are always crooked and or missing all together. That’s been my general experience with Winchester ammo over the years. On the plus some of the better quality rounds have been some of the most accurate out of certain rifles. So there’s some hope for them lol
Lately Hornaday ammo is worse then Winchester! I got a box of 30-06 ammo and half the box would not allow the bolt to close all the way on 4 of my 30-06 rifles! Now that’s some ammo to be proud of! Good thing I reload too!

The 308 sniper round fame is not a hunting idea. It was selected for the creation of specialized sniping rifles in the armed forces. The shooters are specially trained and rifles tuned. In the Marines at one time this meant. A model 700 with a heavy hart barrel and a free floating stock. The newer rifles and computerized data modules allow for many changes. Though I don’t doubt you know this

I recently inadvertently had my leupold scope get turned 14 inches missed the buck.
i went back to old school scopes no more dialing, no more batteries, and want shoot more than 500 yards, with proper caliber , have never had an issue, max point blank range is far better to shoot, 308 for max 250 yards, and my 300 for up to 500 yards, if animal is further out let it walk, or get closer. but i am a 70 year old hunter, and what do i know LOL. forgot to add my old 30/30 for the 100 yard stalks
It wasn’t hearsay. It was Aram’s description of events that was enough to make a person nauseous. Easy to blame it on rumors and hearsay to try and discredit people’s outrage. Aram admitted she shot it first, he admitted he might not have even been shooting at the same deer (a collar is not hard to see at 700 yards through binos and a scope), he admitted that her shot was probably lethal (but not immediately lethal). What grown ass man gets so excited he runs in front of a girl and kills a buck then claims it. I’m amazed anyone can try and justify or explain away his behavior.
The deer ran to him it was the same deer and he put the kill shot on it how you no that if he didn't kill it and it ran then died the next day she still would of lost it and coyotes get a free meal

He took a 730 yard shot at it when it came across the hillside, oh and that 730 yard shot was unranged! Yes, his words. Kill shot? He blew its lower leg off with that kill shot…his words. He met up with the girl while she was already tracking the animal, told her he also shot at a deer without a collar. He then joined the tracking and told her husband “don’t worry, I won’t steal your wife’s deer”. Then ended up pushing ahead of them and shot the deer 2 times. I suggest you find his story or events. It’s pretty telling…
Funny how you describe them, a “grown ass man” vs a “girl”. It shows your bias to it, they were both “grown ass people” she’s a woman, not a girl not that it makes any difference she’s a hunter same as him, her genitalia has no more relevance then his.

@jaydunbar7538 It was her first buck. And he's a "influencer". Hunting etiquette is everything. Ethical hunting is everything. They were both unethical in my opinion. But first blood is first blood. He shot his leg off AFTER she already out a lethal hit on him. I dont care if I tracked the deer 2 days later. It's still my buck hybyhe first blood rule. The only reason he "killed" it was because he went ahead of while they were already tacking him!. In what world does somebody do that after they know you didn't kill that buck? and why would a different buck be on the same blood trail if it was a different buck? They were both in the wrong in the shooting aspect. but its her buck. period. Hes a clown. and he lost his job. He wrote articles about ethical hunting. and long range hunting. That's a joke. 😅😅
I’ve never used a laser range finder and have shot lots of deer, moose and black bears out to 500-600yds. The method I use for ranging distance is to divide the distance in half until I get down to either 25 or 50 yards. Most of us with a little practice can accurately range 25yds. We can naturally half the distance of any range quite accurately with our eye. I am faster at ranging this way than most of my hunting buddies are with a laser range finder. My accuracy is almost always within 25-40yds of a laser measured distance. I know my margin of error works for shots out to 500yds with a flat shooting cartridge with a high bc bullet. Big game like moose offer a pretty big target for the vitals. I would feel confident out to 650yds in good wind conditions. 500yds is my comfort zone for deer. I like to keep it under 350yds with black bear just because I find it harder to find the vitals on a dark bear in the slash vs a deer. I don’t hunt with a high power scope, I usually have my scope set at 9x or 10x depending on which rifle I’m using.
It's funny how one person's low magnification is another's high magnification. Being in alabama most shots are under 200yds often times under 20yds. I wishes I had a 1x8 scope seem as though 3x8 3x10 is most common.
@@tracekornegay3790 I’m in BC Canada and the deer here like to stand at the tree line next to big slashes. It’s very common to shoot 300yds out here when you are hunting this way. During the rut it’s not uncommon to get them walking around stupid and have a shot be 50-100yds. Fall bears for example tend to be shorter ranges. Spring bears tend to be much longer distances because they are moving a lot. The bears like to move through the big slashes and it’s easier to spot them at distance and then stalk. It’s always interesting to hear how different the hunting is in different places. I have lots of family back east and in the southern US and they all hunt in stands and at much closer ranges.
Back before lasers it was said that trained military snipers did well to be within 20% on their range finding, and this is born out on archery where range finding in 3D is huge for success, and a lot of "clever" methods have been developed.
I remember reading about the most successful US fighter pilot in the European theater. His super power was that his vision was about twice as good as 20/20. He could simply see the enemy fighters coming in when they were at a distance where neither they, nor his own wing members were able to see what was coming. So not calling you out, you may have unusual powers, but the idea that people range accurately by eye is not one I would feel confident in.
@@tacticalskiffs8134 I’ve done a lot of 3D archery shoots and I find that estimating range at short ranges more challenging when being off by 5-10yds can be the difference of scoring well or not. I’ve found that estimating 50yds to be fairly accurate by eye with practice. So if I’m looking at a target that’s out around 200yds I’ll look for the halfway point. I’ll then look for the half way point again which would be should be about 50yds. If my half way point is short by say 10yds then I would estimate the range to be 180yds to target. If the half way point was 10yds past where I would estimate 50yds to be then I’d range it at 220yds. It does take practice but I find it effective and I don’t think that my eyesight is anything special. I’m sure there are lots of variations of this method that can be tailored to what works for you. If you haven’t tried it before give it a try. You might be surprised at how well it works.

I'm not judge and jury and I'll admit I don't have all the facts. I think poorly of what he did but I am not aware of his breaking law. Please advise.
When the opinionated feel compelled to hold forth, I recall Mark Twain's tongue in cheek comment on how the scientists speculated on the shortening of the Mississippi River (via bank erosion that straightens the bends). Twain conjectured this process would one day have Minneapolis and New Orleans under the governance of a joint board of alderman.
