Because my friend and I is not correct. If you remove the phrase, "my friend and...", the sentence would be, 'Would you like to join me?', not ...join I. The way he said it is correct. Or he could have said it as, "Would you like to join my friend and me?" Both are correct. Using the word 'I' is not correct in any way.

The girl isn’t actually Sheldon’s girlfriend. They don’t like each other, they only sit together at lunch to have intellectual debates. Also, Sheldon at this age isn’t capable of liking someone romantically. His family is just teasing him. Do you mean is the friendship inappropriate? I’ll you I took college classes in high school and was friendly with my much older classmates, but it never went beyond an academic environment or academic relationship :)
