  • Homeless Aboriginal women living in Darwin speak out about life in "the long grass", living in bushland camps around the City of Darwin, capital of the Northern Territory of Australia. Tammie Garbu Garbu describes harassment by police and City Council, but in general claims that she and her friends enjoy the lifestyle of living close to the land as their ancestors have done. There are still bush foods to be found in the bush, on the beaches, amongst the mangroves and in the tidal creeks. Important ceremonies are also held in secluded bushland sites, as this channel's CZcams videos show. However, bushland and mangroves are being destroyed by greedy developers as Darwin grows and "wastelands" become more valuable. For more information, see "Save the Darwin Green Belt". or Dr Bill Day's thesis, "Fringe dwellers in Darwin: cultural persistence or a culture of resistance?" The video "Longgrass women speak" has been edited from a film, "Long grass - Short grass" by award-winning Filmmaker Stella Smith. The video is dedicated to Tammie Garbu Garbu.RIP.

I move to Darwin soon for work and rest assured whenever I see these peoples. I’ll bring some food, sit and chat and eat with them and listen to their stories. I want to get to know them. I’m from South Georgia and we are Country Folks who show Southern Hospitality to any and everyone no matter race, religion, nor creed. You treat me good then I’ll treat you good. You act combatant then I’ll act combatant. These people seem very peaceful then again I’ve never been nor met any of them. 🤷‍♂️

Don't force your own ideas on other people that don't want it. We could learn how to live in peace from aboriginals. Learn to listen and see beyond your conditioned mind and culture

I'm not really sure why these women left Maningrida to live in a park. Is Darwin actually their ancestral land? If so, perhaps they need housing and social services. Otherwise, I'm stumped.

you didnt listen to her story...you applying your world view which is not hers which is why you will never understand she said "it is my culture" it is not yours she wishes to live as her culture has always lived for 50,000 plus years...it is you who wants her to conform to your world view it is you who has judged her and continue to condemn her...social services is not the solution

@@tboyz1 exactly. This woman is happy living the way she is. Nothing wrong with this at all. If she wants to change and live in a house. It’s her choice. But she likes the outdoors. I think that’s awesome. Proper ways…!
