    Why is an electromagnetic wave called a wave since a wave by definition is a disturbance in a medium, and we know electromagnetic waves don't require a medium? Or is it just that they need a medium to form but not propagate?

    • @FlippingPhysics
      @FlippingPhysics  Před 8 lety +1

      What a great question. Honestly, I don't really know the answer to your question. Electromagnetic waves are the only wave we know of which does not need a medium to propagate. Therefore, what is being "disturbed" by the wave?

    • @bpatricksullivan
      @bpatricksullivan Před 7 lety

      I agree. This is a great question. Although definitions of waves often include reference to a disturbance in a medium, a broader definition is that any function of space and time that is a solution to the wave equation is a wave. EM radiation meets that definition since as functions of space and time, the electric and magnetic fields that constitute EM waves are indeed solutions to the wave equation.
      Technical details: A wave equation for E and for B can also be derived from Maxwell's equations. Those derived wave equations predict that E & B both travel at the speed of light, and relate that measurable speed to other measurable quantities, namely the electrical permittivity and magnetic permeability of the medium. You could consider the medium that is disturbed by an EM wave to be a complex vector field that has no mass, but has a particular stiffness (permittivity) and inertia (permeability). There is some truth to an analogy of space-time being somewhat like a massless drum head whose tightness or stiffness is characterized by its permittivity and whose sluggishness or inertia is characterized by its permeability. The struggle between stiffness and inertia is wave allows any vibration or wave to occur.
      Note that the human-created wave-equation description of waves is, like any other model in physics, a model, created by humans. Nature need not follow the model just because we created the idea of wave. However, the wave model works very well for a large number of physical phenomena and allows us to understand and learn more about those phenomena. In the case of light, it does indeed sometimes fail to behave in an entirely wave like manner, at least, it also exhibits characteristics that fit another model we have created: the particle model.

  • @rithwiqnair537
    @rithwiqnair537 Před 7 lety +1

    Mr.P, what happens to the wave while in destructive interference? Shouldn't the waves ,after cancelling out one another , just stop ? I mean, how can they still propagate in their resp. directions unaffected? If this true, what is the significance of destructive/constructive interference ?
    BTW, thanks a ton for making these videos. They help us a lot.:)

    • @FlippingPhysics
      @FlippingPhysics  Před 7 lety +1

      I think you are confusing waves with physical objects. A wave is not a physical object, it is a disturbance of a medium. Two waves will pass right through one another, unlike physical objects.
