  • Thanks to @Solar Sands for coming to the studio and hanging out with me. Hopefully, he watched The Brown Bunny after this talk. I know this is a much more casual video than I normally make. Solar Sands and I were hanging out and figured we should make something. You can probably tell that this was recorded a month and a half ago, but I wanted my video on The Northman to be my comeback video.
    I hope you all enjoy our discussions and find it cozy.

    Hear me out -- Achilles from The Iliad was the original "literally me" character.
    He checks all the boxes; he's physically fit and traditionally masculine, so skilled in combat that he literally ascends to a higher tier than other men (achieving eternal glory being the equivalent of going from Alpha to Sigma).
    He is also disillusioned with society, seeing himself as the hard worker who gets screwed over by an authority figure (Agamemnon), causing him to brood about how unfair everything is, giving a speech about his bleak outlook on life.
    I wouldn't call him a full on incel, but a major plot point is that he wants a woman that he can't be with; he's mad that Agamemnon took Briseis from him, not because he's concerned for her safety, but because he "earned" her as a prize.
    And true to most "literally me" characters, in the end, he snaps and goes a murderous rampage.

      I adore the Iliad and I hadn't really thought about it like that, thanks for the insight! I think the Epic of Gilgamesh might be an even older literally me story
      Gilgamesh chillin in Uruk as king, swole and rich as fuck, and has sex with as many women as he wants - but he doesn't have any meaning in life. The people of Uruk hate Gilgamesh and pray to the Gods to put Gilgamesh in his place and the gods then create Enkidu. When Enkidu shows up, they fight, bro it up, and do some hero shit. Enkidu's death prompts Gilgamesh to get super depressed and seek out immortality. However, he fails to gain that immortality. From that Gilgamesh learns to appreciate what he has in Uruk.
      He's not a standard literally me character, in an out cast sense, but he is a sort of outcast in his society (despite being at the top of it). He suffers through conflicts of meaning and loss throughout the story. Both he and Enkidu have moments where they are very expressive with their grief, depression, and how they work for it. And while the Epic is very focused on Sumerian society and beliefs, there's still a lot of relatability in how we struggle through similar things too.

    As someone who struggles deeply with diagnosed depression/anxiety and works out a lot to cope, I really relate to The Batman. I’m a big comic book reader and the trailer came out when I was at a very low point in my life and from the tone and characterization I could instantly relate. The rage and feeling somewhat insanity.
    But an underrated Literally Me character is K from Blade Runner 2049. Great character

    • @Assault_Butter_Knife
      @Assault_Butter_Knife Před rokem +3

      I really like K. It's almost an inversion of the 'literally me' trope because instead of lashing out at society by bringing harm and destruction, he choses to do it by bringing a sense of justice to the world, by doing what he believes is right. He helps a complete stranger fulfill his lifelong wish despite having no reasons to do so. In this sacrifice he really becomes something greater, he becomes more human than most actual people despite being a replicant. This movie really makes some powerful statements on identity and what it means to be human, as well as what is it that makes us 'us'.
      There was this quote in the film about how dying for a cause is the most human thing one can do. It really stuck with me and I still often think about it despite not having seen the movie in several years. Perhaps one day I too will get the chance to do the right thing

    I think a common theme throughout a lot of these literally me characters is that theres always something kinda “cool” about them. These characters seem to reflect male angst, their loneliness, their sadness, but they always have something about them which can be distorted to be almost badass in a way. Even if many of these characters predominantly display male pain and desperation, they cant truly be vulnerable or “pathetic” they may be sad, but wow, aren’t they coooooooool?

    • @geovane19
      @geovane19 Před rokem +7

      Yeah they're cool, but saying they can never be vulnerable or pathetic is very disingenuous. The Driver basically ruined his life because he cared too much about some random girl, if that's not a vulnerability I don't know what it is, same goes for Bateman, the entire point of the movie is that he's a shallow, pathetic guy who end up doing horrible things because of his ego.

    • @ab-gail
      @ab-gail Před rokem +1

      I’d say displaying male pain is literally showing vulnerability in these characters. Something that I’ve noticed is that male vulnerability isn’t always depicted in the same way female vulnerability is so women (of which I am one) don’t always pick up on it. It’s more intense and often angry. Where we just expect tearfulness, men display lack of control, bursts of anger allowing catharsis.

    • @ab-gail
      @ab-gail Před rokem +4

    The reason why the "literally me" characters are so popular with young men today is because masculinity has been vilified and suppressed for years. They wanted to get rid of toxic masculinity but by suppressing it they made it more toxic than ever.

      masculinity hassant been vilified for years what? the “woke green hair feminists” your talking about make no systemic change the most they do is be a little annoying. that’s not the cause of the incel crisis, and let’s be honest, no matter how sigma they may be it’s just inceldom

    Guys it’s so obvious also, the through line is all these characters show the male perspective not glorified but real. These characters have always existed it’s just men are now able to a bit more show their mental health issues and connect with these characters who act as avatars.
    Men don’t have many avenues to be open about their mental health and despite what the best meaning women want men still need to hide behind a facade of strength and masculinity.

    I've always felt like American Psycho was a thematic sequel to The King of Comedy. Patrick Bateman seems like exactly the kind of person a callous, shallow, and narcissistic guy like Rupert Pupkin would eventually devolve into after achieving money and fame.

    Norman Bateman is the really concerning one, Lou Bloom, Travis Bickle and driver may be damaged and anti social but they do have redeeming qualities. Bateman has zero positive features and yet people connect with him? Real strange.

    I only know american pscyho in the old 2000s memes ..i dont know what sigma means but i think in the books its fairly obvious that his murders are just fantasies...mostly power trips and revenge against percieved slights . Hes also clearly not cool and smooth at all..the movie does a great job with material but its very hard to pull that off since if it really showed him as he is no one would believe his nonesense

    You think capitalism plays a role in why these characters are so successful? Think about it: traditionally, men have always been providers and for our ancestors, this meant being a skilled hunter, later a skilled warrior, then physical labour. all these jobs require traditional masculine attributes: being physically and mentally strong. Nowadays, we work office jobs, men are exactly sole breadwinners any more and most of the work we do is at a desk, thus being a provider doesnt relate to traditionally masculine traits. You see it with the leading male actors in hollywood: tom holland and timothee chalomet both arent typically masculine. These litterally me characters are men who are typical masculine representations in a world where it no longer requires/ values them. They're men fighting against a society.
