I lived in Warner Robins growing up I went to elementary, Junior High and some High School with Mike Causey always was a great guy my family moverd to Memphis and in the late 70's and early 80's when they came to Memphis to play I would go see them and Mike would put me on guest list and invite me back stage to visit the band great times.
It never ceases to amaze me how I can never have heard of a guy like this (though I remember the band) when there are guys who I don't think could do what I just watched and yet are widely known as guitar heroes.
Causey has always been one of the great unknowns. He and my guitar player. Flip Jones were incredible. My brother saw this vid and was reminded of seeing me on Bass with Mike Causey and Flip. I think the drummer was JC Cruz. Stillwater was full of talented, motivated and serious guys. They made a coupld of records and then were whacked by disco. There was then and still is now a ton of musicall talent in the Macon/Middle Georgia area. Mike Causey now plays with a cover band called Grapevine. He gets a couple of 4 bar solos. It pays well though. Great guy.
Thanks for posting this old clip, and keeping a piece of music history alive. Man, how have I NEVER heard of these guys? I love Wet Willie, Marshall Tucker, etc, but these guys have somehow eluded me all these years. Glad I can rectify that now.
One of the absolute BEST bands I EVER saw live. They opened for Foreigner. After Foreigner played their first song, the whole auditorium began chanting for Stillwater to come back... Many years later, privileged to meet Rob Walker after I joined the Army and he the Air Force. These guys deserved so MUCH more...
It is indeed Mike Causey on the guitar solo. This was recorded live at Uncle Sams nightlcub in Macon, GA after one of the Capricorn Records picnics. The BBC plugged their Niagra tape deck into the FOH soundboard and filmed a long great night of Southern Rock jamming.
This is a great solo, its very structured and has a lot of the licks from the original album. Mike Causey has a great feel and sense of rhythm and swing. This was a big influence on my playing when I first heard it.
THANKS WAITED NEARLY 40 YEARS TO HEAR THIS AGAIN. ORIGINALLY SAW IT ON THE OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST BBC2,BOB HARRIS WENT TO MACON TO FILM THE CAPRICON RECORDS PICNIC.JUST SAW IT AGAIN ON BBC4,THANK GOD SOMEONE SAW IT AND UPLOADED IT IN THE BEST QUALITY EVER.
This band were a massive influence on me picking up a guitar up for the first time. Fast forward a few years and I was in a band who covered Mind Bender .That track was on their first album as well as this one. I only have 2 albums on vinyl in my possession ,this one and the second album ( I reserve the right ). Simply cannot part with them. I’m my book Stillwater along with The Outlaws were the pinnacle of southern rock. Thank you Stillwater I owe you !!!!!
Oh God... a thirty odd year wait finally over! Thanks for putting this up, I remember being blown away by this as a kid, and it still hit me the same way a couple of weeks ago when it aired on BBC4. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Great band! Glad I saw them live in a small club around '78-'79 in Va Beach, Va. (The Peppermint Beach Club). I was dancing on my chair. The band played just for me (that's my story and I'm sticking with it).
I've got to A - B audit this with the album track. I know this is the Old Grey Whistle Test, a British TV program that is supposed to be live, but the notes and phrasing seem to be IDENTICAL in many long difficult passages. Remarkable.
do a youtube search on Stillwater Capital Theatre and see these guys from late 2012 reunion concert, including this song. All but one of the original guys (keyboardist died).
"UNCLE SAM'S NITECLUB" / MACON, GA. / on this nite, after the CAPRICORN RECORDS BBQ, the last song before the doors closed forever? / i attended the bbq, and then went to the club(you can see me, sitting behind WILLIE PERKINS, front row)to see the debute of SEA LEVEL~!...and the last of filming "THE OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST" for BBC-1 TV *****
Does anyone one know the lead guitarist name on Sam's Jam here for this main solo ? I have been a life-long fan since I saw them play in West Palm Beach FL in 1977. The whole album is just incredible timeless music !!
As far as I know (and I'm no expert) it's Mike Causey. if you listen closely you can hear somebody mention his name "Mike Causey, guitar". Hope that helps.
It's the 'fullest' version that was broadcast on the Old Grey Whistle Test programme, on BBC TV. If you've got the 'FULL' footage, please post it. Regards.
wolfcarcass Great song !! I only have studio album here. I will try to post on you tube cuz I think these guys are overlooked. I first heard this played on BBC radio 2. The Friday Night Rock Show. Tommy Vance presenting. Never heard it played ever again on any radio in the UK :(
'Full' as in, that's the FULL recording of the song that was broadcast on the Old Grey Whistle Test tv show in 1976.If you want the album version, look elsewhere. Thanks
I hear Jimmy Hall hooting and hollering but I don't see him. He was credited with percussion and vocals on the other lesser quality video but you can never clearly see the drummer.
Lead singerJimmy Hall(long blonde hair) is indeed playing the Congos on the right of the stage. Way back on drums is Sebie Lacey who sometimes took over on lead vocals.

...saw this on OGWT in 1970's...so good...went out and bought the album...and the album is superb....
I saw it too on the OGWT new year special...been looking for album for 34 years ..just picked it up in USA>
Yup, same here!
Thanks for posting this old clip, and keeping a piece of music history alive. Man, how have I NEVER heard of these guys? I love Wet Willie, Marshall Tucker, etc, but these guys have somehow eluded me all these years. Glad I can rectify that now.
They seem somehow to have eluded everybody.
The bass player absolutely digging it from start to finish. Brilliant!
Love watchin' Al play also. You're right he's diggin' it.
Why can't I stop coming back to this? Because it's brilliant, that's why!
Mike Causey -- what a talent! super BadAss! This is one of the greatest jams ever. Certainly the greatest under-the-radar-jam EVER!

Unsung guitar hero. Such a fantastically constructed solo.

What a fantastic look back at my old friends!!! Great stuff... Miss Sam's and the good old days!
Great band! Glad I saw them live in a small club around '78-'79 in Va Beach, Va. (The Peppermint Beach Club). I was dancing on my chair. The band played just for me (that's my story and I'm sticking with it).
First band live I ever saw as a young teen back in 70 s
Glad we could all get to see it again. It is brilliant.
Great to be able to see them in their prime. Only got to listen & record a radio broadcast of a live show in 1976 from the Four Acres in Utica, NY.
Didn’t see them but recorded also
Remember some good ones at 4 Acres, Horslips, Head East, Pat Travers, Eddie Money,
One of our favorite bands ever, this is wonderful to see. Thank you so much for sharing!
You're welcome 😉
my dads best friend played lead for them. man, they’re even better than I remembered them being. wish they’d put their stuff on Apple Music though
The movie Almost Famous brought me here
Supremely talented guitar work.....Blazing!!!!!
Excellent stuff and high quality in every way.! Takes me back -Thanks for posting.
Cool. I saw them 1976 in Fayetteville N.C. while stationed at Bragg. They were great
Love this jam!!!
I've got to A - B audit this with the album track. I know this is the Old Grey Whistle Test, a British TV program that is supposed to be live, but the notes and phrasing seem to be IDENTICAL in many long difficult passages. Remarkable.
My thoughts too! What a pity they no longer play.
do a youtube search on Stillwater Capital Theatre and see these guys from late 2012 reunion concert, including this song. All but one of the original guys (keyboardist died).
You're welcome,I also remembered it from the OGWT,I love the guitar playing on this clip.
I remember this from the OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST special.Classic.
Better late than NEVER, this is a keeper,Thanks. Wooohhoooo❣
Hello gorgeous how are you doing hope you’re having a great time with your family may God bless you and your family

Just discovered a gem!
Bob Spearman on Keyboards, has since passed away.
If i had a time machine this gig would be my first stop. Has anybody got the full version?
also youtube search "Stillwater Big House" for some 2011 concerts, including Mindbender
I mean, SERIOUSLY?!? That is just INSANE!

Since I've been loving You .....Led Zepplin???
GOOD NIGHT!
guitar sings in his hands
You're welcome, it's damn fine stuff.
Causey kicks some butt!
Jimmy's playing the bongos on the front of stage
They have a lot of Allman bros...lehnerd skynerd thing going on...cool band ive never heard of.
Yeah...watching it now sober, well hyper-caffeinated, and on a sharp monitor. He's rocking it, LOL.
Dope !!!!

it is Mike Causey, check out some of my videos for more of their songs
If you're a friend of his you just call him Causey.
This is the smokingest thing I've ever seen. Holy s**t, fellas.
Woooohhhooooo!!!!!!
Yeah, the lead guitarist is 'on fire', no doubt about it.
Almost as good as a certain Steve Morse. Actually the second album is a work of art, but a fabulous live band in small venues.
wow
great upload but WHERE IS THE FIRST PART DISAPEARED TO ??
OMG
Maybe some lag in audio and video sync, I'm no expert, it looks and sounds kosher to me.
This is NOT full version. There is about 3 minutes of verses sung slow before this lovely jam session kicks off.

That's not "Jimmy Hall Y'all" from Wet Willie in Mobile. It's our Jimmy Hall from Warner Robins up front on congas.
@@angelherring3902 whatever happened to Jimmy Hall I saw Stillwater at the big house reunion for Stillwater but he was not there
Sadly I can see why they were Almost Famous.
