Is this just Tiktok overhyping things, or do you believe in the "bad wig" theory? I think TikTok overhyped this way too much, and it isn’t “bad wigs” that are attracting millionaires. These are just my thoughts on the bad wig theory though.

Hi Cammy! I think you nailed it. I've watched one other video about this theory, and when I tell you.....the reaching was astronomical. The preexisting proximity to a typically white lifestyle would more than likely be the draw.

I just went off of what my coworker told me about her upbringing and it makes sense that her proximity to that culture would also mean she’d be more likely to date and marry someone of that culture as well. TikTok blew this thing up like it was some type of proven theory 🤣😂

I really don’t think it’s the wig itself. It is anything that doesn’t fit inside of the beauty standards of the black community. If you look a little too urban, they are probably scared to approach you because they think that you would not pick a guy like that.

I totally agree with almost everything you said. I was adopted when I was a newborn; white parents, white friends, white school...all white. I would joke that I was like an Oreo, black on the outside and white on the inside. My white mother learned how to do my hair from a foreign exchange student who was from Africa. Fast forward many years later, I have only dated white men, and am now married to one. It's about who you relate to.

I dont think white men care what you wear on your hair as long as you’re clean and smell good. They like all the different styles we wear and typically don’t notice what’s fake unless it’s drastic or unnatural looking. They also like our natural hair in its various forms.

You don’t need to have exposed to the “so call Black culture” (what ever this is ). To care about self grooming your hair . Hair is apart of femininity which means it can look and be done different . This is a dumb thing that social media is making a big deal about. Who cares about this women’s hair BW should be focusing on the important things such as how she is slim, talks well , how she acts and carry’s herself in her circles, so that they can get into these circles. She is super smart and married super smart. All those other BW rappers all they have are their WW looking wigs and males who cheet on them and who are garbage. Personally I like grooming myself good so when I do wear a wig it’s flat on my head and combed but that’s it , I’m not for the unrealistic textures , the laid baby hair and the extra long hair, these things speaks to the so called Black community and I don’t ever want that , plus my man is a man and he does not care about how my wigs or hair looks, he just say it looks nice or compliments me when I have a new style but then again he has sense and has other more important things that he focuses on.😊

    • @CammyjOfficial
      @CammyjOfficial  Před 6 měsíci

Hello 👋🏾! Thank you for sharing yours perspective. I gave the examples of not being exposed to popular black culture regarding why she didn’t care about her wig looking so called “bad”. She never had a hyper focus on her hair and no one when she was growing up made an issue of the kind of wigs she was wearing. She didn’t grow up watching shows that were popular in black culture, music videos etc. Her wigs were never dirty etc, they just were not the best looking wigs. She even stated that because SHE didn’t grow up exposed black cultural standards that her hair never was a big deal to her which is why she just threw on whatever wigs she had and kept it moving. I believe TikTok blew this was out of proportion and focused on the wrong thing, because it isn’t about the wig. The men who dated her were not concerned about her hair, they never mentioned her hair, they were just focused on her as a person which is the most important thing there is. Thank you for watching!

Not having a "bad wig" but having [what they (black men) see as] "unattractive hair". I had an ex explain once, "I don't care how women wear their hair, as long as it looks nice".

I'm not from the States, but have watched videos about all this cultural appropriation stuff that's recently become a thing over there and feel it's an overblown issue. If a black girl wants to wear a blonde wig, or a white teen braids their hair into drealocks for aesthetic reasons, I'm not going to judge. We may or may not think they look silly or stylish, but if that's the look they feel comfortable with, then c'est la vie, ultimately the only opinion that matters is theirs.

Smart, illuminating take on the so-called "Bad Wig Theory." THUMBS UP. Subscribed!
Ms. Cammy J., I appreciate how you present interesting contextual history that rises above the anecdotal. I agree that the "Theory" is actually multi-faceted, much of it positive and affirming. What I like about the "Theory" -- and your analysis-- is the humour, particularly the multiple wry but tender ironies arising out of the Theory. On one hand, the Theory enables Black women both to celebrate popular Black beauty aesthetics for their exacting, rigourous standards and , at the same time, subtly critique them for (a) the stresses these standards put upon Black women and (b) the complex and often troubling links between (American) Black beauty aesthetics and "White" Eurocentric ones.
In this light, I think, "Bad Wig" wry videos and knowing parody conveys a certain joy among Black women, celebrating "Bad Wig" as a form of rebellion against the social pressure to "maintain appearances."
"Hard Wig, Soft Life" is not really a literal belief but rather, I think, on some levels (straight) Black women (a) giving permission to each other to be open to partnering with men of different communities and (b) Black women signaling to each other that love is so contradictory -- inherently absurd and yet absolutely essential--that perhaps breaking rules and flipping sensibilities is the only hard rule and sensible thing to do.
After all, that married UK couple --doting husband and slim, attractive, but bad-wig-wearing wife -- are absurdly ensconced in their castle right out of a Monty Python comedy --and the husband and wife seem to know that they are absurd in their wealth, bad wig, doting, and comically "ginormous" home.
    But they also seem happy.
And perhaps there lies the core of Bad Wig Theory": giving permission to seek happiness in love, no matter how absurd the whole thing really might actually be.

Hi Miss Cammy! First, I'd like to say that I can't thank you enough for your previous videos where you have taught me how to properly conceal the darkness underneath my eyes...so love you for that!
Second, this is a great video. Here's my take...I plead guilty to not wearing fantastic wigs...lol! Obviously, I can only comment on my own personal experiences where White men are concerned, and I have found they don't give a darn about my wig, girl. They have always seemed to be more pre-occupied with my personality. I would describe myself as nice person who really cares about others feelings and I think because that is what shines through in my interacations...my wig becomes the least of their concerns. The scrutiny simply has not been there. I think hair tends to be a much larger issue in the Black community. I can understand that. But at 53, it's truly something I choose not to make an issue of at this point in my life. Overall, I believe my personality and desire to be kind to people should ALWAYS trump my wig. Thank you for this video, sis. Wishing you nothing but the very best in this new year!
