95% of ufc roster and analyst where leaning towards Charles, the odds in betting clearly indicated that Islam is way ahead than Charles. When you hear that Islam won few rounds in sparring with Khabib then you know the dude goin to run through entire division. Tatiana was absolutely bang on, respect.
Man some of those people only ever supported Oliveira cause they still can't get over the fact that Khabib went out undefeated and beat their boys all too easily. They don't love the sport, they love the athlete that represents their inner selves.

Islam's style is just gonna be really hard for oliveira to deal with, on the feet islam is very defensively responsible and is also a good counter puncher making oliveira's chances of catching him slim. Oliveira's aggressive style and tall stance leaves him susceptible to takedowns which further decreases his chance of catching islam on the feet. Essentially I see islam taking him down in the first two minutes of each round and holding him in positions where charles cannot threaten with submissions and banking rounds that way.

If it's pure BJJ/ADCC maneuvers, my money's on Charles.
But in MMA, I just don't see how Charles overcomes the few, but important, assets & skills Islam has over him: better vision ... better head & body movements ... hardest guy to land significant strikes against ... next level wrestler ... elite (no degree needs to be mentioned) BJJ skills ....elite Muay Thai just like Charles own Muay Thai but a Muay Thai style that is much more fluid (smooth elbows & knees, powerful leg, body & head kicks, etc).... elite Judo grips/clinch & throws... next level positional control (as Tatiana mentioned here)... brute strength... second nature/smooth leg locking prowess... fence using as a tool/a tactical approach...
And while people are impressed with Charles unsurpassed submission records at the UFC, as we should be, Charles himself also has been subbed 3 times & KOed 4 times. Islam has ZERO sub loss & only 1 KO loss in his 2nd fight at the UFC.
Statistically speaking, the Sub & KO wins & losses of Charles & of Islam are identical: in 42 fights, Charles has 21 subs; that's 50%. Adding 3 sub losses, his Sub wins down to 43%. In 23 fights, Islam has 10 sub wins; that's exactly 43%, too!
Charles 9 KO wins + 4 KO losses means his net KO wins are 11.9%. Islam has 4 KO wins & 1 KO loss, so his net KO wins (& losses) are 13%. More or less identical.
Lastly, whereas Charles absorbs 3.18 significant strikes per minute, Islam only absorbs 0.84 significant strike per minute.
When you permutate these, I just don't see too many ways Charles could win, UNLESS Islam makes a big mistake... when he goes for a take down... such as putting his head in Charles guillotine. Islam did in the Wade fight; Khabib did in the Poreir fight: both Islam & Khabib tend to make those mistakes. Against strikers & less skilled BJJ guys, they're okay; make a mistake like that against someone like Charles, it's game over.
But the thing about Islam is, he doesn't have to take you down via Greco-Roman or folkstyle wrestling, of level changing; he could easily do it using his elite Judo, from a clinched situation where both fighters are standing, each having a grip on the another; this will allow Islam to easily take someone down using the toss, footsweep, or balancing skills he has over others, without any danger to him, like level changing would. If you do a level change against Charles, he could EASILY snap a guillotine on you & that's pretty much it!
Charles had a good run but now it’s Islam’s time. It’s gonna be very difficult to take that belt from Islam. Rafael Fiziev and other up and coming LWs have openly said that they’re preparing for Islam they know

Its strange for me that people think Islam will not be able to control Olivera on the ground. Islam has been ragdolling and submitting BJJ Black Belts for a decade and although Olivera is very opportunistic with submissions himself, it's been versus either guys who are hurt, not the best grapplers to begin with or guys he can control. A fresh Islam is none of those things and I genuinely believe he will have very little problem both controlling Olivera on the ground and taking it there. Islam will not allow for the chaos to happen, chaos that could favour Olivera. Standing up, he has become very efficient as well and Olivera does get hurt, even though he recovers tremendously well. Islam by convincing victory, round 3 or 4, ground and pound or submission.

Olivera’s cardio prep has to be through the roof for this one. To outstrike he’ll have to be quick on his feet, to defend against the takedown/get up from the ground he’ll have to use energy

Thing is: Oliveira won't be afraid of the takedown. He knows how to fight AND finish his opponents from the bottom position. Islam will have to be extra careful when he's on top of Oliveira. Islam knows he's not fighting the usual nobodies that he beat so far.

Most people are picking charles to win primarily because he’s an exciting fighter its more wishful thinking because they dont want islam as champ but if we break it down technically, his path to victory is very small.
His only 2 ways of winning imo is catching islam with a guillotine on a bad attempt or landing one good shot that puts islam out cold early in the fight (which charles has never done)
Charles muay thai stance will make it easy for islam to get to his hips and secure takedowns. Trying to win a fight from bottom against a world class grappler like islam isn’t likely to succeed.

It is not like he was a kid rookie with no expirence. The blueprint to beat oliveira is there. A Sambo guy who's physically strong and keeps his body small on the ground and does not extend his body, which makes it harder for oliveira to get a submission, is not a good match up for oliveira. Oliveira can do good against folkstyle wrestlers. Islam is not folkstyle. Ialam's Combat sambo, jiu-jitsu and judo is a problem for oliveira
