Blew up the HX35 Turbo already!?

  • Blew up the HX35 Turbo already!? I made a poor and dumb decision to let a "boost leak noise" go for a few days without doing anything to try and fix it. I thought that the boost leak noise was possibly coming from a very tiny crack in a intercooler boot on my 24 valve cummins and thought I could get by for a few with it. Come to find out, there was a hx35 turbo oil drain leak. One of the bolts on the hx35 turbo oil drain had worked itself loose a little bit allowing the turbo oil drain leak. By having a little turbo oil drain leak on the hx35 turbo, it was making the turbo run hotter than it should be from not getting oiled properly to cool it down as the turbo spools up. Due to the turbo heating up from lack of proper oiling, that most likely caused the whining sound that I originally thought to be a boost leak on the 24 valve cummins. The hx35 turbo oil drain is now tightened back down and I also installed the new hx35 oil feed fitting that I ordered. I will keep an eye on it this week and take it easy on everything to see if it clears up the whining noise now that the oil drain is tightened down again. I'm hoping that I didnt damage the hx35 rebuild kit that I just installed on the turbo by not looking into the whining noise sooner. I could have very well just ruined the turbo and have to pull it back off the 2nd gen cummins to rebuild the hx35 again, from not thinking to check the oil feed and oil drain sooner. When the turbo doesn't get oiled properly, it doesn't get cooled properly and heats up from spinning so fast while creating boost and the lack of oil WILL cause the whining sound that I heard. It could also be that tiny intercooler boot crack and possible boost leak, but I have a feeling it's from the lack of oil. There may be another hx35 turbo rebuild coming soon, or a bigger hx35 turbo upgrade. We will see how this week is and keep an eye out for more cummins turbo failure symptoms, and make a decision based from that.

      How much oil pressure have you got, the oil flow to turbo is controlled by a orifice after the supply pipe in the housing, that didn't get blocked somehow ?

    Been a while since I've stopped by. Great videos btw finally got my 12v running great love diesels now. Sorry about the turbo problems, all about trial and error hope you get everything running perfect soon. I know you'll keep us updated! 👌

    I see no reason why a drain leak would make a turbo run hotter.

      You're absolutely right. I was just thinking out loud out of frustration rambling on while recording sounding like a fool 🤔. Not really thinking about what I was saying all that much. I've been called out for that a ton of times now.

    Good video. I wonder if the turbo was pre Oiled before your installation I had Oiled my replacement turbo apron install. It's a constant battle keeping up with the diesel but when you get it dialed in its going to be unstoppable. Don't get discouraged & send it !

      Abraham Salcido I oiled it when I rebuilt it and before installing. Not sure what's causing the issue but itll get figured out and be better than before!👌

      No, No, No! Hx40 has a weak center shaft known to fail. An upgraded hx35/hx40 hybrid built properly is a solid option, but money would be better spent on numerous aftermarket units. Affordable ones are out there.

    Your set screw will not reduce the pressure applied to the diaphram , it will only change the rate at which the pressure will rise .

    I’m stuck at work trying to get a turbo or rebuild and have to drive to work everyday in my hy35 with it squealing just like yours. Its been 2 weeks and still running. I’m far from home to do anything else about it.

  • @thatpowerstrokebloke
    @thatpowerstrokebloke Před 6 lety +2

    oh crap !! how much money do you have to put into this cummins !!! most weve spent in repairs on our 6.0 is for a wheel hub. those old 24 valves are supposed to be really reliable right ? time for a 3rd gen i think !!

    • @purepanorama8484
      @purepanorama8484  Před 6 lety +2

      That Powerstroke Bloke the 24 valve is a great truck. But it's just time for all that maintenance to be done and I want to add some fun parts into the mix as well. I've gotta keep content flowing for the channel some how! I would love a 3rd gen, but I'd still go right through it and start replacing things. I'm almost done replacing everything I want to on this truck now, so we can start thinking about bigger and better mods down the road.

      Theres definitely a tiny wiggle In them when they are freshened up or brand new. I thought it would be a bit tighter but I just ran it anyways. Itll get swapped for something different eventually anyways.

    • @joshstephens6029

      I wouldn’t beat yourself up over this a leaky drain on turbo will not cause failure now if you starved the oil feed That would cause failure I use to truck pull Cummins trucks for many years over spooling and high drive pressures are where the most common problem occur

    • @purepanorama8484
      @purepanorama8484  Před 6 lety

      cmorga43 morga I was just saying that I thought I messed up the hx35 build by not paying attention to the noise I heard a lot sooner. Something happened where the journal bearings are now cooked and the turbo needs a rebuild again after a week.

      If guess oil pressure needs to be bumped or there's just a oil issue. Even if its maxed out it shouldnt be blowing. Smoking turbo means the oil seals are toast. Or you are burning oil from the engine?

  • @justinswafford8437
    @justinswafford8437 Před 3 lety

    A loose bolt wouldn’t mess up a turbo. It was that cheap rebuild kit bud. If there were an actual supply line issue maybe but all a loose bolt on the return would do is make a mees

    Lol dude, have a leaking drain has no affect of oil flow TO the turbo. It needs a proper rebuild! Send it out to have it rebuilt and balanced. Also stop saying DAT every other word. Seriously if this was a drinking game I'd be smashed 5 mins in!
