    Hi Friends, I hope you’re doing marvellously well! Mastering Engineers get all kinds of work, such as Pop/Rock/Hip Hop/R&B etc mixes that have pops or clicks in them, hum and other extraneous noises which need to be skillfully removed! Also of course a large part of what they do is restoration work to old cassette recordings, reel to reel two track, Vinyl etc that need to be transferred to a digital medium for modern playback. Here Warren Sokol shows us some of the typical things he encounters and how to fixes these issue! Thanks for watching! Many thanks Warren

      HAHA!! indeed they could!!
      There was a WAV file passing around the internet a while ago (I have a copy...somewhere??) that mainly played back as noise & odd sounds, but when put into a Spectral Editor like this, you could see words, faces & other images drawn out in the time/freq/level waveform!! Similar to the German industrial synth artists who put out hard to listen to "music" that would create cool patterns on an oscilloscope while it played!! The time it would take to complete that kind of thing is insane!!
      Thanks a lot for watching Chris!!

      Thanks for watching!! RX is a great program for audio repair & other "technical needs" like sample rate conversion, dithering & also file & audio analysis tools as well! Very powerful indeed! But just to be fair, there are a lot of other Noise Reduction tools available that work in a similar way.
      Although I used RX for this video, I tried to explain the techniques I was using & why so it wasn't just an explanation of RX, but the how & why of the tools used, whether you are using RX, or the Noise Reduc plugins from Sonnox, or Ceder & many others.

      Hi Daniel • yes, indeed! Mastering engineers do this on a daily basis. Especially when doing restoration work and remastering old recordings! Thanks for your marvellous comment

    • @warrensokol3069
      @warrensokol3069 Před 6 lety

      Thanks for watching Daniel! Yes RX & other noise reduction tools gets used in audio mastering regularly. Like WH mentioned when we are doing restoration, or remastering older albums. But even in new recordings, there can be noises & tics, etc that were masked by al the instrumentation until mastering & then as the details are brought out & the level is brought up they can start to show themselves. A lot of times it is broadband noise during intros, or fadeouts. But there are also pops & tics that are not always heard by the original rec eng/prod/artist/etc because they are so intimately familiar with the song, or lyrics that they are not listening past that stuff. This is one of the main reasons having a professional mastering engineer do the final mastering even if you are capable of doing it. Someone who wasn't there during tracking & mixing, who can hear the songs as completed songs...not tracks & mix techniques that were used!
      Thanks again for watching!! Hope you learned something new that you can use on your side of the audio world! ;^)

      Hi spiralsofdanu wow hello there in the Outer Hebrides! That’s amazing! My recommendations are few and far between, every manufacturer has a version of denoising it seems, Waves make some good ones, it does however seem this program is the best I’ve ever seen in action! Have a marvellous Nee Year!!

    • @warrensokol3069
      @warrensokol3069 Před 6 lety +2

      Hi spiralsofdanu, thanks for watching!! So happy that you gained some knowledge & ideas from this video!!
      As far as broadband noise reduction plugin recommendations go, one of the better ones I've seen recently is the Sonnox "DeNoiser"! Like RX it is very simple to use, but can also give you extremely detailed control if needed & it has an excellent GUI!! Sonnox has a line of 3 audio repair plugins that are all quite impressive, they make a DeNoiser, DeBuzzer, DeClicker & they can be purchased individually...where RX is an entire "suite" of tools that has to all be purchased at once.
      (FYI, since at least version-9, Wavelab now comes with simplified versions of the Sonnox noise reduc plugins!! They are much simpler than the full versions, but still work very well!)
      Like WH mentioned Waves makes some NR plugins, but I've never gotten good results quickly with them. Not that they don't work, it just takes considerably more time futzing with options to get an acceptable trade off between reducing the problem, adding artifacts & keeping the quality of the intended sound intact.
      Then there are the really expensive options like AudioCube, CEDAR & NoNoise both of which are excellent at what they do, but cost more than most modern DAWs do!
      NoNoise in particular has to be run from within the SoundBlade mastering DAW only!?! It definitely excels at removing pops, clicks, thumps & even complete dropouts!! Although I feel like their broadband noise reduc has become outdated & no longer compares to newer more modern designs! (example: RX's BBNR blows it away now!).
      As you can see that is not an easy question to answer!! But there are a lot of options out there now!
      I probably mentioned this somewhere in this video, but most studio that do a lot of this kind of work, tend to have 2 or more options for performing noise reduction because depending on the problem you are trying to fix, one may work better than another for each task. I have both the RX, the Sonnox tools.
      That being said, I prefer RX for many reasons. I like that it can run as a stand alone DAW of it's own, or as individual plugins within any DAW! The broadband noise reduc in RX is one of the best ones I've used & I can usually get a working result relatively quickly with it! the sample rate conversion in RX is also very nice & the batch processing makes tasks like that so simple & easy!!
      OK, didn't mean to write a book here...but hard to say in only a few words...
      Thanks again for watching!! Appreciate al the support!

      yes remarkable I've never been very successful using normal EQ, after see your comment looking further on iZotope RX website 'De-wind' is only available on the more expensive 'advanced' version.

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  Před 6 lety +1

      Hi airwood, yes, it appears that although 90% of their functions are available in the 'Standard' they have an 'Advanced' that contains Dialog Isolation and De-Wind functions. Happy Holidays!

    • @warrensokol3069
      @warrensokol3069 Před 6 lety +2

      Hi Steve, thanks for watching!!
      Short answer: YES it can.
      Long answer: It depends on how loud the wind is compared to the intended audio & how much it changes throughout the recording.
      One of the things that makes EQ & a lot of standard noise reduc tools fail at this kind of task is because wind is not a static noise, it is constantly changing in loudness, freq, strength (is it blowing so hard the mic's diaphragm distorting at times? etc...) & many other factors. So there is no single "noise fingerprint" that is going to make a reduction curve that works throughout the recording
      That new "De-Wind' module is more than likely an automated algorithm that tracks the incoming sound based on your settings and then automatically adjusts itself the best it can according to what it is "hearing".
      I am still running RX5 & it looks like De-Wind is new with RX6, so I have not actually given it a try yet
      I also noticed they added a new "De-Rustle" module too, that helps reduce the noise made by lavaliere mics rubbing against shirts, etc!! WOW!
      Most of the updates to RX6 are more geared toward audio-for-video post-production, so I have not upgraded mine yet.
      Another thing RX Advanced includes in a very power-hungry module called "DeConstruct" that only has 3 controls (in ver 5).
      1- Tonal gain (sounds you want to keep) / 2 - Noisy gain (noise you want reduced) / 3 - balance (what is considered tonal, or noisy components)
      Looks like RX6 has added options for "Transient gain" & "Artifact smoothing" which I can only assume make this module even more powerful!
      When a recoding is really heavy with noise, "DeConstruct" can work some real magic, but its heavy handed, so it's best kept for when that is truly needed!
      Hope that helps?
      WS

    At min 17.00 he could have gotten away of that thump is he lowered the threshold to LF and increased the sensitivity to 8. Interpolate is good, but it takes into account both sides of the problematic event, which sometimes might not match, so therefor compromise the restoration.

      Like WH mentioned this is a small preview clip of a full course & your point is part of most things covered. Especially with noise reduction & cleanup there are probably 100 different ways to approach a solution & during the course there are multiple times where it is shown that an "acceptable" result can be achieved using technique-A. But a better result can be achieved using technique-B instead.
      Audio Restoration is always a experiment to find how best to fix each individual problem & that does not alwasy mean fixing them in the same way, or with the same tool!

      Yes it was not in very good shape...but that was exactly why it was used during this course!!
      It is a prime example of Audio Clean up rule #1....it's called Noise REDUCTION, not Noise REMOVAL for a reason!! A lot of times the best that can be achieved is lowering the noise to a point that your brain doesn't pay attention to it relative to the intended sounds! It can never be removed completely without added severe artifacts though, so just enough is the goal!
      Thanks for your comment!!

That's because you are not oversampling. That may be due to the use of a c) consumer computer with a front side bus which can not facilitate the bandwidth needed for the resolutions required. D) there is no audible difference between linear and logarythmic measurements- they show you the energy of the sound present in different ways. .................... (the H3000 processor bleeds into your cables) I don''t know if I should be frustrated by a novice teaching my skills, or be happy that he's so far off with his experiments that my job will never be in peril. Love, as always.

      Would you care to elaborate more on your forensics audio setup and workflow? The example Warren used is specifically for music or recovering old recordings. I presume you have a more sensitive job.

      Indeed. I was also referring to forensics as they apply to music. Since I've been on paternity leave, I've applied my skill set to music and I believe this is my niche within the community. The answer to your question is too long/boring to type. I'll make a video that's more entertaining than the information already available on youtube.

      @@rscotta831 truth! Between raising a kid with special needs, actually having real engineering work to do, and nobody able to watch VR video: this video is barely important enough to make. However, your interest has me interested!
