It's so funny to me that the old lady in the story basically said "Have the lights off by 10pm, otherwise it attracts big moths." And the imagine my mind created was just Mothman banging himself against the glass, crashing in through a window, going to the light and standing there hypnotized by it.
Oh lord this sounds like the setup for a parody movie of the mothman
Let me in bro I'm a fairy
Yeah.. 😄 not so creepy anymore! 🤭
it's 10:15 and you still have a light on, you hear *bang bang bang* from your window. you go to investigate. it's a 6-foot-tall man with wings and bright red eyes throwing himself at your back door looking absolutely pathetic. he wants the light.

I really think Shane should be cut up for fish bait and used to catch sea monsters. He is a real POS.
I was so hoping that mothman would indirectly save her from the ex. The author definitely had SOME alternative ending planned for this, and just scrapped all the foreshadowing for... whatever reason.
Well there’s a 2.5k word limit for submissions, so if they scrapped stuff that could be why
@@DeathnoteBB that could be, but then why bother including the clingy ex at all? chekhov's gun is a pretty well-known principle...if a detail isn't going to pay off at some point, there really isn't a need for it in the first place.
@@nothobbesmufc949 what are the chekhov's rules?
@@ilikeitimnotgonnacrack9307 Checkovs rule is Checkhovs Gun, basically if you place a gun in the first act it has to go off by the third act. The gun can refer to many things in a story it doesn't have to be a gun. The failed Checkhovs gun in this story is the creepy ex among other things who was mentioned but then never really utilized.
@@ThisisntVEVO just to plant an anxious thought that he might be coming to contrast the unexpected truth which is the moth man.
the ex stalking them was WAY scarier than the man of moths. wish there was a conclusion to that part of the story
Right? So weird that the story just doesn’t mention that again
Yeah what happened to that and the footprints outside the house? Was their ex the mothman ??? Why would you break up with mothman ?
I was waiting for a cool plot twist where the ex comes into the picture somehow. My theories were:
A - Mothman indirectly saves the protagonist from her creepy ex, maybe by waking her up by knocking against the window like the other night. Except this time she can hear a car and has enough time to hide/fight back. Surprise, the supernatural creature is not the villain of this story!
B - When she runs out of the cabin, the ex is there and offers to give her a lift back to the city. But can he be trusted, or is he more dangerous than the moth-infested cabin or frostbite?
C - There was no Mothman all along. The protagonist is paranoid from dealing with her ex, fatigued in the thin mountain air and having fever dreams after catching a cold outside. And maybe the old lady thinks it's funny to scare the shit out of her renters by knocking on their windows at night?
Either way, the buildup was tense and intriguing but the ending left me disappointed.
@@maria.skorik yeah!! i thought (because the old woman only started seeing mothman after her husband died) that mothman and the ex would kind of combine. like he only showed up if something/someone was haunting you (and not her fault of course - was interested to see how that would play out and how she would escape)
@@tellthealien5801 ooh that's an interesting connection! I forgot about the old woman's husband.
Ok but what if the creature that showed up at the window was the half-eaten body of the ex, piloted by the moth hive? 😳
And maybe the woman's husband stayed out too late and lit a cigarette or something, and the moths were the cause of his death as well?
Shane laughing at the woman and her poor dog being thrown against a wall feels like an integral part of the ghoul boys' lore
He’s right cuz I definitely laughed when she told that story too 😂😂😂

I totally thought this was going to be a situation where the obsessive ex turned himself into a moth to try and win her back-like “if the only thing you truly love are moths, then I will become one to prove my love for you” would have been a cool twist to tie both parts of the story together
This is not junji ito stories
The ending had me a little like 'wait that was it?' Like, the scariest part was when she lost enough blood to colour the entirety of the bathwater red and thought a bandage would fix it? I mean. What was the deal with the boyfriend? Was that just there to reach the word count? So what about the footsteps? If the Mothman was floating that wasn't him. If it's a hiker? What the heck though? Ah yes, I too, love to hike and bang on strangers' windows in the middle of the night. And this Mothman's only goal was to just stare at the light? Like yeah that's kind of the only goal moths have, so. Instead of getting frostbite, she could've just turned off the light tbh. He probably would've left to the moon. Anyway yeah, America's Mothman is scarier.
But other than that, very happy this show is back :D

Shane was more distrubed by the yellow walls than the story. Shane reading the Yellow Wallpaper would be unnerved until the ending when he would start to laugh.
Love The Yellow Wallpaper!
@cherrypitbliss it's so good
Oh my god I have to read the yellow wallpaper for English literature and it’s honestly one of the best books ever read!!!
Tbf the story itself had a hard time being scary because as the boys lampshaded (lol) several times, the protagonist is dumb as a brick.
The time it takes to stand up and flick off a light switch is less than seconds at slowest. Even the window being stuck was solved before danger was imminent and it could've been solved even faster if all that "wow it's chilly in here" prompted her to jump up and close the window as soon as she woke up. Immediate action that nothing was in the way of whatsoever, and the climax of the story doesn't happen.
Yikes.
24:00 "I realized I had only one hope: to get away from the light."
YOU ARE LITERALLY STILL AT THE LIGHTSWITCH. YOU'RE RIGHT THERE. FLICK THE LIGHT OFF MOVE A SINGLE FINGER!
Mothman's still in the house but chances are the moon + the moonlight reflected by the snow will be more attractive and he'll turn around! Don't just leave the light ON!
Get your life together protag! Falling asleep in snowy Russia apparently froze your brain!
As someone who was in an extremely toxic relationship where he stalked me for years after I left him, the mothman is the least scary part of this story.
I love this touching story about how mothman protected this young woman from her crazy stalker ex.

I think we all would react the same imagine you're talking to someone about their ghost encounter and they just go "and oh yeah it yeeted my dog"

I love that it’s such an iconic BUN moment that everyone just collectively recognizes that’s what Shane’s talking about 😂
Can someone remind me what ep that was? I remember the moment but not the broader context 💀
Not how I thought this story would go. I think the ex should have shown up to terrorize the main character and then Mothman rescues her by killing him and the two end up falling in love. And Shane and Ryan would cheer on the mothman cause he would be the hero with the ass they can't seem to stop talking about lol
The ex was kind of a meandering dead end. Maybe he shows up and the moths attack him and save her or something. It doesn't go anywhere though

That story lost me at the get-go. Luna moths (not "lunar") are native to the Eastern United States. If they're found in Europe at all, they're vagrants. They're never found as far east as Russia, and they're sure as hell not seen in the winter. They're light green, not black, and they're probably the least-scary moth in existence. They're really quite beautiful. Some moth expert!
Apparently there are Indian Moon Moths (also called Luna Moths) that can be found in Russia. Flying about during the winter, probably not, but there does seem to be at least one species of luna/moon moth in Russia
It turns out you can make up fictional animals when you write a fictional story.

i resonate with shane's yellow house discomfort so much i feel reassured. ive always had this unnerving fear of yellow lights/walls inside houses, even had nightmares about it as a child where nothing really happened, just the ligths inside the kitchen were an ugly shade of out-of-power streetlight yellow and that on itself was enough to make my heart race and have me wake up shaking. i never gave it much thought lol but its nice hearing someone else has a similar distaste with that specific kind of scenario
Ooh I bet you would hate the game Inside the Backrooms! All the walls are covered in an eery pale yellow wallpaper.
Oh dude my houses living room walls are yellow
I had a dream about a streetlight when I was little and I remember it was such a vivid deep black orange colour I thought it was so scary for some reason
There’s a name for a phobia of the color yellow-Xanthophobia-I’m sure there’s a name for phobias of other colors but I’ve only ever heard of one for yellow…I guess there is something particularly unnerving about it
Yellow walls remind me of the smallest bedroom in my grandmother's house. It was the most comfortable room and my brother and I always fought over who got to have it, but I could never sleep properly in there. I had really bad anxiety when I was little and often stayed awake all night, because when I did sleep, I would have horrible nightmares. Even though I love that room and that house, yellow walls still freak me out.
This story is immediately hilarious to me because the word Ryan translated as Mothman doesn't even mean moth in russian. Is says Melnik (Мельник) in the story, not Motilek (Мотылёк). And melnik means miller, someone who mans the mill. Or it might be used as a surname, just like its english form.
So the old lady was just warning the protagonist about some guy who, presumably, throws flour in people's windows for no reason (or about a creepy dude named Melnik in general), and she just happened to encounter Mothman instead. Or at least that's how I will perceive that story lol
either that, or the author of the story had a limited knowledge of Russian, so they just pasted the name of an existing miller moth (Acronicta leporina) into Google Translate and went with it lol. but the thing is, in Russian this Noctuidae is called Стрельчатка зайчик (bunny)

I always love the art for these, props to Mollie Ong for her awesome illustrations. Always makes the story that much more immersive.
Okay but why would she go to Russian winter to study a North American moth that appears in spring and summer?
Migration patterns, variations of the the more known version, an new subspecies. A Lunar Moth was found frozen in Russia as said in the beginning, the scientific community part that studies butterfly would want to know why, learn it, study it. She saw a chance to get away and took it.
it kinda makes sense, considering it says that a dead luna moth was found near this particular cabin. luna moths have very short lifespans (around 3 weeks iirc) and this was a pretty remote area, meaning it was unlikely someone brought it there. also I hear a lot of countries are pretty strict about bringing small animals in and out of them, due to the havoc invasive species can wreak on local ecosystems, making it all the more likely this luna moth was native. as such, it makes sense that entomologists would want to study a possible population of warm-climate moths that have taken up residence in somewhere as cold as the mountains of Russia, and see how they evolved differently to survive in this environment. of course, we know thanks to the story that there was a supernatural cause, but the protagonist would have had no reason to think that was the case before she experienced it first-hand.
Even if a frozen one was found there, there's nothing mysterious or unknown about lunar moths. They're just cool, pretty moths with very short life spans.
Could possibly be looking for the Japanese moon moth that can be found in east russia? It is a look alike/close relative of the luna moth 🤷

I still love the clip from the orginal buzzfeed mothman video where shane and ryan are pretending to be mothman and like laughing hysterically with demonic mothman noises. Cracks me up everytime
Things I learnt from this video:
-Men are scarier than any cryptid
-Kids in trench coats aren’t human
Nothing says close friendship like "let's throw sand in each other's eyes"
Whoever decided to have this 80s style shot of you guys in the dark with that glow effect and light setting, i love that person.
ok i thought there was something wrong with my vision and i was freaking out alittle😂
Glad this series is back! I appreciate the Barbara Walter's soft lighting!
I love this series!
The foley on this episode was amazing. huge shoutout to the soundscape designer!!
Someone needs to make a super cut of all the moments Shane shows Ryan *the picture*
christ i need to know what that picture is so bad
@@fortyfourtwentythree Me too! It’s killing me.
Do you know what the picture is of? I've tried to find it before and failed.
@@fortyfourtwentythree it's most likely rule 34 of Charizard
@@fortyfourtwentythree It's Smile Dog, Ryan even said it in the video
As a russian:
1. Going insane over the Shane’s pronunciation of “мотылёк”🥺
2. The text version actually says “мельник” which means “miller” - it’s a real type of moth

"It's a cloud you f***ing dork"
Just the way he said that had me in tears xD
The thing about Shane consuming television and content was so relatable to me. I have to consume entertainment at every waking moment
It's so nice of shane to cosplay as the old russian woman from the intro
😭🤣
The fact that Shane had to apologize for laughing at the dog thing is ridiculous, but I appreciate him still laughing about it. It’s a silly thing, he’s a silly lad.
And like she took it a little far
well it is common to apologize in that situation 💀 i hate when ppl say this like yeah they apologized cause they feel empathy. they didn’t need to force themselves- i totally would’ve laughed too but saying sorry is not some obstacle a person has to overcome it’s literally just common decency.
@@juno3281 I sort of had a feeling Buzzfeed might have told him to do the Twitter apology, but I mean maybe not I guess? He seems like a really nice dude, maybe he just felt bad later? Which if that’s the case then apologize away.
ALL HAIL THE MOTHMAN *squeaking noises*
🤣🤣
I knew as soon as Shane started laughing that it was the photo from Smile Dog 😂😂😭
Shane bringing back the Lustful ****** is the best thing ever, never let Ryan feel safe!
I can still hear Shane's and Ryan's Mothman calls in my head.
Sounds like a pig giving birth
11:50 - Shane raises the common issue with yellow as a problematic choice for interior decor - but the right kinds of yellow can work well. It does need to be used carefully though. I've seen it work beautifully in tropical settings with other colors, Mexican / Spanish style, East Indian, Asian and Chinese interiors with other colors, pale lemon yellow in older New England and colonial style houses, and other examples. One good example is the kitchen and dining room with green ivy ornamentation / stencilling on the Firefly ship in the movie Serenity.
I honestly appreciate that out all the content to focus on in this entire video that you had the pure dedication to explain the proper uses of yellow in interior decor.
@@alphaofspades5774 😁👍😜❤️
My parents painted the W/c in our house yellow and I’ve refused to use it since lmao. It was not a good yellow
@@marthamorrison4649 I feel your pain. The WC?! WHAT were they thinking?!?! 😂😹🤔😳😲😫😫😫 🟨
Dunno why but Shane calling the US Mothman a terrorist is the funniest shit
I remember when Shane and Ryan was talking about the Watcher and mentioned it would be an excellent name for a channel and years later here we are! 🎉🎉🎉
Congrats on ur Antman cameo Ryan! Me and my friends had no idea u were in it so when u appeared on screen we all looked at each other with our jaws dropped lol
So excited for this season! I would love to see some of the old reddit "creepypastas" come back. I miss the suspense of not knowing if the story was truly real or not
They got rid of that aspect early on for some reason. Kind of a bummer, but I get they’d rather use reader submitted stories than creepypastas or letsnotmeet/nosleep
They stopped that after the story about the former roommate that ended up acting weird, with the dirty kitchen and hole in the floor. It ended up being a real story and it was quite clear that the person had some mental illness. I *think* some people actually gave them shit because of this but no too many. Guess it was both the backlash and the fact that they may make fun of real people on bad situations that made them change the format
These "are you scared" videos are literally so nostalgic I love them so much!! :)) Shane and Ryan are so funny and comforting. I re-watch their videos all the time when I'm sad and they never fail to make me happy
I am so glad that Are you scared is back!!! I kept checking for the next episode. I love these Stories! Please keep up making them
Scientifically Yellow indoors causes anxiety and there's lots of stories about yellow walls etc. Or at least that one I had to read for school.
That's why in Russia psych wards were always coloured yellow - it was easier to control the patients when they were in a state of depression and not wild behaving. Thanks to Dostoevsky, yellow is still popularised as a colour of mental unwellness and sickness. Needless to say, my mind immediately went to him when I heard about a yellow tapestry and a yellow interior😅
My bedroom walls are currently yellow..
I remember the vid where shane was laughing at the lady’s dog and how mad she was😭😭 it was so awkward it was funny lmaoo i love how shane still finds it funny
I’m always down for some callbacks. This was great. Plus, you guys made Mothman less scary tbh. Seeing you two eat sweets made out of Mothman parts and a Mothman pizza really made him seem more edible than anything. Probably lots of protein.
Thank you, Shane, for saying how disappointing it is when the 'monster' is just in their minds. (Glad that didn't happen here.)
I've read one Stephen King book, and it happened to be The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. The direction it went in just irritated me for similar reasons.
These videos always release at exactly the time I get home from school on Friday. It's perfect.
Me getting home from work as well
As a Mothman lover and someone with a Lunar moth tattoo I am so excited for this spooky story ghoul boys!
I'm half asleep and thought you were a Mothman lawyer at first and was thoroughly intrigued
@@charlesnathansmith Now I need some Mothman Lawyer content
same hat!!
Yay a new episode of Are You Scared? I wanted this to come back for so long and I hope it leads to more in the coming months :D
i just realized that with the premise of a young woman traveling around the world to an isolated area for work as a way to avoid an ex, the property being owned by an elderly person, having rules centered around a humanoid figure, and facing freaky consequences when they ultimately break those rules, this story is the boy (2016) but with mothman and less characters. and that would mean shane and ryan probably weren’t too far off when they were joking about why mothman was there bc didn’t that old lady say he first started showing up after her husband died?
