    6:44 you want to make sure both the shift lever and prop are in neutral when you tighten the coupling nut. The nut should move up from the inspection port in forward and down from the inspection port in reverse.

    Just noticed that you used a zip tie to hold out the kill switch. I'm guessing you didn't have the right kill switch key at the time. That's a great idea I'm gonna use that for sure.

      Yea typically don’t get the lanyard when purchasing the motors so it’s a good trick when you don’t have one lol

    Hi sir, nice video, lot of advice that would do for me. I have the same motor, and my gear shaft broke, I have the part to replace it, but have some doubts as for where to start dissasambling. Can you please please advice? do I need to remove the engine?, where to start?. thanks in advance.

    I have one of these and I tried installing a killswitch but now it won't start and I've pit the old one back on and it still won't start I've cleaned the card and I'm picking up a new sparkplug any tips?

      Check and may sure your getting spark out of the coil. Maybe u hooked up the wires wrong for the kill switch. I forgot for Yamaha but all mercs and such use a black with a yellow stripe for the kill circuit

      What do you have? I made a couple videos on merc 25s from different years and I think one Johnson video in the past

      My only thoughts without obv being able to work on it myself is. Does the motor have good even compression. Does it have solid spark even at wot. Come some will spark fine at idle then the trigger takes over for the higher rpm’s. So maybe a trigger or point system went bad. The only thing really then after that is fuel related stuff. Is the fuel pump shot or is you high speed jet in your carb clogged. Also make sure the carb butterfly is opening all the way. Should be completely level when you go to wot. Really that’s just about it that I can think of other than maybe wrong pitch on your prop or something of that nature. But I’d start with compression and spark first. Then go through your fuel system

    Great channel, lots of great help, I was wondering have you ever done a head gasket on a merc 9.9, 4 stroke. I'm showing low compression (70psi both cylinders) on my newly used 2007 any suggestions are greatly appreciated, my gheenoe misses the water

    • @outboardfinatic
      @outboardfinatic  Před rokem +2

      Hi there I have. Have you for sure narrowed it down to the base gasket tho? Reason I say this is because you could waste a lot of time and money doing it just to find out it’s something else. If your able to get yourself a cheap borescope camera and look in the cylinders. Check the walls for any scoring, scuffs, or carbon build up. If there’s scoring then the motor needs a rebuild and no matter what you do you’ll never get the compression up to where it needs to be

      @@outboardfinatic Thanks for the reply, I did a compression test in both cylinders and they came back 70, it starts with the electric start, runs, pisses carb cleaned when I bought it it all looked good, went on a maiden voyage slipped into neutral and would not start, had to be towed in. I will look into an borescope, keep up the good work

      @@pucho513 personally I use powertune from mercury quicksilver. It’s a spray and it’ll turn your bucket black if you have carbon build up. Wouldn’t be a bad idea as carbon build up is possible

    Hey man got an old yamaha 5hp. The pull started won't budge after sitting during the winter. any idea what it could be before i disect this engine? :) also the reverse doesnt work.

    • @outboardfinatic
      @outboardfinatic  Před rokem +1

      Def in neutral? Spin the prop and make sure it spins freely that means it’s in neutral. Reverse you can’t shift into without spinning the prop while you shift. Clutch dog needs to line up with the gears. Forward it always sprinted forward so you can always shift it in forward without spinning the prop

    • @outboardfinatic
      @outboardfinatic  Před rokem +1

      Only thing in my mind that could make that happen from sitting over winter is either that it’s not actually in neutral and the neutral safety switch his hitting the fly wheel or possibly if you had some kind of water intrusion and now the rings are stuck fast. Or you have lower unit problems and the drive is locked and not allowing the powerhead to spin. Best way to know is just drop the lower unit and see if the flywheel spins

    • @outboardfinatic
      @outboardfinatic  Před rokem +2

      As long as it’s above 110 you’ll be fine. This motor I had 120. But age ofc gets to the cylinder. Some have been able to keep running even below 100 but it’s uncommon

      Also just make sure it holds the psi when you do a compression reading. If it starts leaking down then you have a leak somewhere as well just something to keep in mind. When you do the compression it should hold and not leak down

      I have one of these motors. It starts and idles fine when cold , runs fine but can be contrary to start after I have been on a drift for more than 15 minutes. I find I have to re-choke the motor to start it then it seems to run fine. I have just cleaned the carby out so I will see how that goes. I did a compression test on it and it has just over 100. Do you recon that could be my problem?
