  • An old outboard from the 80's. Bought off e bay for £200 in a non running order. But for how long?

    This video has helped me out so much.
    Couldn`t get to the bottom of why mine would start and run. made myself a decaff tea and it now runs perfect. Cheers.

    Great job diagnosing the carb issues and getting this thing running. Now you can move on to replacing the water impeller and housing since you ran this engine dry!!!! Never test your water cooled engine out of water. It doesn't take long to burn out the water impeller in the lower unit.

    I bought a small sail boat just before xmas, and it came with a Mariner/Yamaha 4hp chucked in for free, the owner said it was seized, so i could just have it for scrap. The only part that seemed seized, was the gear selector, which eventually snapped off. I drained all of the stagnant 10yr old fuel, removed the power head and dismantled the gear selector parts, i knocked out the old seized parts, fitted the new selector, and re-assembled, fresh fuel/oil and the little beauty started on the 3rd pull.

      Nice one! Good feeling fixing stuff like this. You see my part 2? I found a load of crap behind another cover on that engine. Part 2 will explain. Just thinking of reliability for you being out on the water.

      @@penknifemonkey I`ll take a look at part 2 later, i`m in the process of rebuilding a Partner/Husqvarna ride on mower atm, it`s been a challenge without a manual, but i`m almost finished, funny thing tho, i was actually given it by the same person that sold me the boat, it was originally his fathers, but he`d bodged a few bits over the years, to the point when he`d just given up and bought new, tbh it`s been fun fixing it, and i`ll stick it on Ebay in the next week or so.

    Got the same one, but I got springs and stuff inside the membrane pump. Did not see any when you take the Thing apart. Mine is running only in short bursts on full choke, and carburator is cleaned. So looking on CZcams for mor ideas 😁

    You started it without the water muffs in place and thus will need to replace the water impeller now. Good job getting it started though.

    I did the same, still plodding on. Mariner 5hp two stroke, £200. Was starting, doesn't now. Wasn't pumping, impeller obliterated, and housing compacted with salt.
    Nice flow now from bottom leg, from impeller housing. Still won't pump.
    So it's powerhead, thermostat. If the lower leg is anything to go by, there's a big salt crystal removal job ahead. I have the same on starting. 21/05/21
    Thanks!!

      Hello, I'm pretty sure. I have heard it a fair few times over the 20 years. The engine is the same, its the carb which is different. Two carbs same engine, one is more tuned. But as per your comment, I'm not 100% definite.

    If not 1 question is if I want to fix an external fuel tank to my motor same as yours lol do I just remove the plastic plug next to fuel cut off switch then run pipe from external tank to fitting on bottom off tank gear side ? Or anything else like a fuel pump needed any help be good complete novice 😂😂😅 Frank

    • @penknifemonkey
      @penknifemonkey  Před 3 lety

      2 stroke outboards generally run on 50:1, on new outboards some run them on 25:1 to help with the wear in. But due to emissions you cannot get a 2 stroke unless it's for commercial use (in the uk). I know a gardener who runs his Honda 4 stroke grass cutter on 2 stroke 50:1, more hours than a London taxi. Still works sweet.
