  • Is an equalizer something you need in your set-up? let's check out this vintage 1978 ADC 5 band equalizer and give a listen.
I also give a couple reasons why one of these might be something that could benefit you!
    RIP David Crosby...
I learned he had passed while filming this.

ADC's first commercial (home use) equalizer was the ADC-500 in 1977 and I hated it. Set up like this SS1 with "paired" sliders. I bought my first EQ, the ADC Sound Shaper Two (with the VU meters) in 1978. It had twelve bands per channel (two more than standard octave EQ's), THD/IM of 0.02% and could feed an equalized signal to your tape deck. I liked the flexibility of the SS2. Eventually getting several tape decks I upgraded to the SS2IC model in 1982. It had bidirectional dubbing, LED meters, separate output controls and an excellent subsonic filter (15Hz@18dB/oct). Still use it almost every time the hifi is on. This little five band job would help out most vintage mid-level systems with questionably accurate speaker systems. And to boot, it's just a lotta fun to use. Swell video. I was at Woodstock in 1969 and Strawberry Fields Festival in 1970 then drafted in 1971.

I had the Sound Shaper Three MK 2 Paragraphic Equalizer. I got it to fine tune the bass of my Celestion Ditton 66 speakers. It did a great job at it. But with 12 band and a lever that allowed you to change the frequency plus or minus 20%, it was basically a 36 band unit. It took a long time to get it to where I liked the sound. And then a friend came over and started to play with the unit and changed all the settings. AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!

🤣🤣🤣 I feel your pain! I just had an idea about an equalizer cabinet that locks 🤔

I mean, you still can if you want to. There's no shame in it (purists will frown, but who cares, lol) the ADC sound shaper is an AWESOME device and may help sound for your specific needs. I'd bet that receiver sounds awesome, though. Thank you for commenting!

I found one today on the curb alongside trash, and its a factory wood grain instead of black. Sticker on the side of it says walnut grained vinyl veneer. Wish I could add pics of it in the comments.

I have discovered an issue with the equalizer, unfortunately. It plays perfect for the left channel, but the right channel is barely making any sound. You have to turn the volume up to full to slightly get any sound output, but the sound is their. If I go through the tape out output (bypassing the equalizer output), it works fine telling me the input is working, but using the tape out output, you get no equalizer functionality. I took the wood cover off, and it looks clean and has no leaks or corrosion on the board that I can see. I don't have enough knowledge to diagnose it further, but I'm sure it just needs service from being old. Thoughts?

@Hopkins582 sounds like a bad solder joint on the output rca jack. They can be hard to see, but if you have a soldering gun, you can just resolder the pins. I would normally say it's a problem with the slider pots but it would really unlikely that all the left ones are clean but all the right ones are dirty.

Hi, thanks for the vid, does the wd40 contact cleaner lubricate the component aswell ?
    Thanks

It does not, unfortunately. Deoxit makes a product for slide pots. I can't remember the exact one though.

I just recently picked up one of those and I was wondering how would I connect it to my JVC AX-Z1010TN amp. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Isn't that a JVC reference amplifier? Congrats on finding one! Honestly, I wouldn't hook it up to that. But that's just me. Basically, plug whatever device you would normally connect to the receiver into the play input and connect the out put to the receiver.

Yeah 0.004% THD? I honestly wouldn't put the sound shaper in the same room as that receiver. Lol, you don't need it.
