Thanks again to everyone who contributed to the fundraiser that allowed me to buy this reproduction! Tod is the only maker I'm aware of who makes such powerful crossbows, and the craftsmanship is amazing.
I've got plenty of armor tests planned. To start with I just shot at regular targets as well as a sample piece of gambeson from Medieval Market and riveted mail by Stephen Rhodes (based on Viking Age finds, so a little anachronistic) in this video.

Just the fact that you need ear protection for a crossbow is insane when you think about it.
As a person who will have Pratt & Whitney afterburning jet turbines in their ears for the rest of their life, let me tell you: hearing damage *really sucks.* If it's enough to cause you mild discomfort, it's enough that you should be protecting your ears.
That being said, what part of the crossbow process is causing the hearing discomfort? Is it part of the mechanism? Or, is something like maybe the bowstring going supersonic for a split second, like a whip? I know that the bolts aren't breaking the sound barrier, that can't be it.
The limbs, string, and retention mechanism would all make considerable noise when releasing half a ton of tension.
A hammer hitting a nail can reach the hearing damage threshold. Long term you can mess up your hearing at much lower levels then most people think.
Yep, never let anyone discourage you from wearing hearing protection if you feel you need it. It doesnt have to be as ear splitting as a 12 gauge shotgun to do damage. If its uncomfortable then its loud enough to do damage. Hearing loss is accumulative so by the time you realize youre losing your hearing its already too late people!
the vast majority of the noise comes from the spinning nut, with a more modern trigger (or a horn nut) it would make hardly any noise, but that wouldn't be as historically accurate.
Joerg's watching this video and thinking to himself 'needs more rubber...'.
"Let me show you its features."
More likely; "I could make that ten times more powerful with rubber."
Pssst, Nicmadis- that was the joke, but I was being subtle about it ;)
Or, 300 bars of compressed air.
Joerg Sprave could cock that one handed! 😆😉👍🏻🇨🇦
Very cool, all kidding aside.
The sound of the release is very satisfying.. Enjoy your new "toy" Skall, looking foreward future armour tests
Pretty damn good sound and video quality! You almost don't hear the wind and other environmental stuff at all also the close-ups of where the bolts hit look pretty detailed. Also the content was very interesting and fun to watch. You can definitly see that Skall has improved A LOT
Jesus, one of those times that muskets look like a rapid fire system huh? I think by the time you'd have that cocked you'd have been ended rightly 10 fold.
Dominic Guay Perhaps Medeval crossbow units would be divided into separate groups that fire in-sync, in such a way that there would almost always be one group that is currently firing, while the others are reloading. I have absolutely no historical evidence to back that up, but it seems reasonable...
A musket - with training and practice - took anywhere from 90-120 seconds to reload. Certainly isn't fast to reload but this uh....this is a bit faster than that lol.
not every opposing army would be so well equipped with pommels though
I don't know, people didin't do this with muskets until a Swedish king came up with it. I think his name was Carulos Rex in case you want to look it up for yourself.
Christoph Brinkmann during 18th centuary, a well trained British soldier can do around 3 shots per minute with a flinlock rifle.
The main thing that went through my head seeing you use this was "this is why crossbow's needing strength in games instead of dexterity is a load of rubbish"
it doesn't actually
in most games i know crossbows don't have strength based damage modifiers, if anything they might have a strength requirement to be used but adding more strength doesn't usually increse damage.
Windhelm Guard Dark Souls did this which is nicely immersive. However bows scaling with dex is silly, requirements sure but strength obviously would be the factor in damage.
damage wouldn't increase on a bow with strength either, once you are strong enough to draw the bow, adding more strength doesn't make the arrow go any faster, it would increase accuracy due to the user being able to hold it more steadily and you might also be able to shoot with a higher frequency, but that's about it.
Well, that would depend on the type of crossbow. Not all of them had cranks.
EDIT: Or do you mean, increasing damage? Either way that would be a bit silly.
Emanuel That's why Mount&Blade is great. It has both a strength requirement for crossbows and bow damage scales with a skill that requires strength.
Hey Skallagrim, love that the bow is finally here and I am excited to see its full power and potential. Just wanted to tell you to be careful standing behind the tickler (trigger) and spanning towards yourself, most treatise depictions and reenactment I have seen have the bowman on the other side pushing away when spanning to keep the chance of dry firing down. The way you are spanning could be muscle memory from the goat's foot lever, or perhaps the windlass may be safely spanned from either position and I don't know what I'm talking about. Stay safe. I hope you and Cara have a great Halloween.
I love how the background music changed from medieval to techno at 5:03

Sad but true.
Fantastic video. Great to see such a weapon reviewed by a familiar and authentic CZcamsr. Kudos! And looking forward to more.
Nice job on the music editing there. The switch from old fashioned to modern didn't go unnoticed. You're putting some effort in all of your vids and it shows.
Shoutout to Tod's CZcams channel, "Tod Todeschini", where he shows and explains how and why things were made the way that they were, including the internal mechanisms for crossbows.
Would be interesting to see what it would do against level II body armor
Ash Pierce it is lighter body armor effective against 9mm rounds and .357 JSP. It is usually light enough that it can be concealed.
At least assuming he is saying level 2 of the NIJ 0101.05 Standard.
ultraboy222 it should be pointed out that while kevlar is a fiber in the most traditional sense in lower level body armors, in heavier armors kevlar is more like a hard plastic sheet. Kevlar armor plate inserts wouldn't be so easily penetrated by a sharp arrow or spear.
NIJ Level II body armor, it will stop up to 45 acp and 9mm. I know from experience, one can stab through a level II body armor panel. Bullets aren't sharp and pointy like a knife or bolt head. but I don't know if it is legal to own such a thing in Canada
ultraboy222 (see edit below) there most certainly is such a thing as kevlar plate inserts. And I didn't claim it was a plastic, I was attempting to explain the consistency of its surface and how it feels to the touch. The specific panels I am thinking of are inserts inside of an advanced combat helmet used by the us marine corps.
Edit: on further research I found that what I was referring to was a composite plate which included kevlar as one of the materials, and not pure kevlar. I was wrong, simply put.
Stewart Smith yes I know, nij level II is woven aramide cloth. I have put a knife into it and penetrated, not easily. It was an expired panel.
Thats a really nice video! Thanks for the extensive commentary, really helps getting a feel for the use of this weapon!
You gotta congratulate the folks from the medieval era for creating those type of arrow/bolt heads. Those are some pretty basic components that they had to work with, so the fact that they manadged to create an especially shaped point to penetrate stuff like gambeson or mail is pretty darn impressive
And they didn’t design machines to do each operation or punch some code into a CAD mill/lathe. They did it all with hand tools, for each and every part.
Perfect for home defence.
Hold on, kind sir, can you just stand there for a few minutes? I just need to load my weapon.
You only got one good shot of its already ready to go but if not who in this world would wait for you to load up the crossbow?
Snoopy Goose they keep laughing in astonishment giving you enough time
Snoopy Goose well most criminals are gentlemen so theyd politely wait while stifling laughter as u reload xD
Its MAGIC A melee weapon is better
I love how you change your music in your videos based on the weapons time
Thank you skallagrim seriously was always curios about these never had the chance to try or see one in action
Before I watch is, I'm already very excited! I hope this is the crossbow you mentioned a while back that you were hoping to purchase.
Have to say padding FTW! From ten meters for switchblade length of penetration (on the first on the light and mostly on the THICC-er one) i'm more impressed by the armor i have to say! I mean crossbows were incredible game changers but damn someone has to praise the armors sometimes!
Also can you please try something like a coconut layer under the padding to simulate bone? I bet those bolt even if they don't pierce, from ten meters might crack bones due to their mass.
the force alone would be enough to break bones.
With bone breakage it is often less about kinetic energy (heavily dependent on velocity, e=0.5(m*v^2)) and more about impulse (m*v*t when the target is standing still) meaning that while bullets move considerably faster, their lower mass robs them of impulse, as well as the fact that they are designed to penetrate small areas rather than punch through armor like these bolts were meant to. Lots of factors to consider though
Battlefield? Nah, I'll pass. But if I'm defending a castle, I'll take one of these over a longbow any day. Shoot, duck and reload, and shoot again.
Longbow is better then this crossbow. It may have power but your castle will be overrun if you got a team of them with the crossbow defending your castle. The reload time is slow, very slow.
I would have a team of longbow man with the crossbow. They can use it once or twice and get back using the longbow.
Snoopy Goose if have some with the long bow (or composite bow cuz y not) and some with crossbow. Fire a volley of bolts, and while theyre reloading, the archers with the long/composite bows just keep firing away
If someone can use a longbow you give them a longbow because it's better overall at long range. The crossbows are for giving to a bunch of people who aren't trained from birth to be longbowmen, to supplement your traditional archers.
Since the reload is slow, you protect the crossbowmen with layers of other soldiers like pikemen, and just hope no-one breaks thru or uses their own archers/artillery against them.
But in general you take all the archers you can get and set them to their work, give all your crossbows to other people, because almost anyone can aim the damn thing into a crowd of dudes, and stick them all in a position where they can hit the enemy and there's enough people with spears and pikes and swords in front.
Have the well trained crossbowmen aim for armored targets. Bowmen aim for softies.
This is a perfect battlefield weapon. If you're away from cavalry and the front lines you can pour fire into people with impunity. Reload time is irrelevant.
Awesome video brotha! Loved seeing the comparison between ancient and modern!
So nice to see it in action, Im eager to see all the future test.
I just occurred to me how strange it is that windlass doesn't make crossbows.
THAT'S A LOTTA DAMAGE
Flex tape those sword cuts shut
What a beautiful piece! I can't wait for more videos.
Gives you a whole new appreciation for how easy Tod makes loading one of these look.
Havent even watched it but, MONEY WELL SPENT!!
He sounds like grue from despicable me
Harrison O'Connor hahaha I was just thinking that!
Badass - definitely a labor of love to load and shoot, but the payoff of seeing such a large, powerful, traditionally made crossbow in action makes it well worth the time and effort.
Thanks for sharing Skall
I find this soothing and relaxing while also entertaining. Great video.
Yey! Daddy Skall finally got his mighty bow, now he's gonna wreck some shit
I dedicated the ending of my latest video to you Skall ;)... for getting me mooore into swords and understanding them better
sub for a sub ok ?
WEIR DO sorry... sub for sub is literally pointless if we aren't gonna watch each others content. And currently you have no content so their is no point for me to subscribe :/
I'm always impressed by how protective gambesons are. They're like the medieval form of a bullet proof vest.
Make one with silk and it literally is bulletproof :)
I love the editing of the music, the music goes from medieval to electronic when he switches to the modern crossbow, and vice versa
Are there any historical references of what the standard rate of fire was in actual use?
First Last I would imagine there would have been someone reloading them in a cycle as the archer took them and released them one by one.
i would imagine a skilled crossbow man could fire 2 a minute
About 30 seconds to load this and shoot, if you are skilled.
Finally! This is what ive been waiting for! Now put a pommel on of em bolt shafts
If it has a shaft or a handle, it needs a pommel. That's the Skall way.
Rambaugaming GoodGamesForYou hehe someone of us skall fans has to make a pommel the size of a fotball
Scandinavian Huntsman Truly.
Rambaugaming GoodGamesForYou yeah amd they should give it to skall personally and then they should let skall throw it at either them or maybe some guy from youtube
Scandinavian Huntsman old meme
Very fun seeing the comparison to the modern crossbow.
Thanks for putting links to the music in description.
Ok so you have a spanned crossbow, but what about a spandau crossbow?

It's actually incorrect to call them Spandaus, as those crossbows weren't even made in Spandau.
finally!!!! :D :D yayayayayayay ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Its amazing how protective the gambeson is.
Up until that last bit you were saying how hard it was aiming with this thing but all I can think is wow you're doing a really good job
He looks badass.
Admit it, people.
Yes, I liked my own comment.
IraqI GaMer No one was denying that!
would bolts like these be able to cause heavy blunt trauma?
could probably break a rib if you were wearing only gambeson and mail.
At about 1/4 the energy of a 9mm slug you'd get a thump, but not enough to damage you through padded armour.
Dominic Rossetti through mail alone depending on quality even low quality material riveted could fail
+Iain Clark, it's not the kinetic energy that matters if it would break bones but the inertia, and this has it in tons.
I make it 4.69kg if the armour stops the bolt in 0.1 seconds. I'd love to see your maths.
Love how you changed the background music to a more futuristic theme when using the modern crossbow
I love the music at the end of your videos it gives off the old school rpg vibe
How would one of those pieces of cloth do against a modern day pistol?
Not very well I suppose.
Raguel
would probably punch right through, gambison was made to protect only against cuts in places plate armor can't protect
Shovel of Walnuts k thx
In my experience i use cloth to catch super slow loads, or regular loads after passing through water jugs. If i had to guess fabric is bulletproof from 300-500 feet per second depending on thickness(or 100 to 170 meters per second) most handguns are atleast twice that fast. Real bullet proof fabrics work up to roughly 1500fps or 500mps
It might just about offer some protection from a .38 special snub nose revolver but I wouldn't count on it.
yo skall, in what battlefield situations is a crossbow superior to contemporary bow types?
i am interested in all kinds of stats in this regard. i assume bows are way better at long range and may even be faster to shoot by default than the fastest crossbows. they also seem to have more penetration in comparison to the same draw weight wih cross bows especially when we talk contemporary. so would the crossbow only be good at short to medium distances on "normal" battlefields? are they maybe easier/cheaper to build? is ammo more expensive for bows because the bolts are so much shorter and therefore can also be a bit curvier than ammo for bows? is maybe lighter, so a crossbowman can carry more ammo to battle?
the only thing i know for sure about it is how you have to be quite strong to shoot bows, so maybe weaker men, teenagers, maybe even children, old people and women can shoot crossbows more efficiently?
do they maybe work better in rain or snow, or very hot/cold weather?
do crossbow bolts have completely different penetration properties in comparison to bows? are they maybe more efficient at dealing a destructive blows against armor, even if it doesnt injure the opponent at all, but at least slowly chewing up and eroding heavier armor in comparison to bows that only really are able to penetrate and poke you to death?
are crossbows maybe capable of dealing blows with enough kinetic energy to the heavy, full helmets of the enemies to just knock the enemy out with a concussion, even if it doesnt penetrate at all? (no way, right?)
or were crossbows only popular with christians for containing a cross?
Onetwo Threefour Powerful longbows required far more strength and skill. Also, you can keep a crossbow loaded unlike a normal bow.
Crossbows were most useful in sieges, as you can have people with loaded crossbows waiting for targets of opportunity to present themselves and engage at a moments notice. With bows the time to draw aim and fire is too long to engage something like a defender popping their head up to survey the situation, or running along the walls, while a crossbow can be waiting for as long as the shooter wishes. They are also more useful in confined areas due to their more compact nature, such as in a tunnel.
Bows also have much higher strength requirements meaning smaller framed people tend to be better off with a crossbow if they need to shoot anything reasonably armored.
The number 1 advantage of a crossbow over an English longbow is the training requirement. English longbowmen started training from an early age to build the muscles (&skeletal support structure for said muscles) required to operate that famous bow, while you could realistically train the average peasant in a few days. Other long bows and hunting bows did exist at the time, and could be used with less training over-all, but those bows tended to still require more general training and experience than a crossbow did.
The good old famous Battle of Agincourt prove that no handheld single person bolt projectile weapon can deal anything against properly armored knights.
Crossbow take signficantlonger time to load but a newb can be out into the field at day 0, while Longbow men or anyother traditional type bow take years of training.
Both are pointy stick try to punch throught something, penetration were archive by the force the arrow tip apply to whatever surface they come into contact to, which with some physics and math, are related to Kinetic Energy which related to velocity and mass, so no, penetration mechanism is identical.
thanks for all the answers, but what about recurve bows, though? those are much smaller than the english longbows and are fairly easy to handle.
tunnels? how and when? i have never heard of battles in tunnels, especially not in the context of crossbows being more efficient in tunnels than normal bows
That background music..... The only thing I could think of is AoE1. Thank you for nostalgia Skall! And of course for your videos they're great to watch!
Never thought i'd see something commercial that makes Joerg's creations look simple and quick to operate
Shoot in the general direction....
Fart in the general direction.
Fixed it
It must shoot pommels for maximum lethality
My favorite CZcamsrs, shooting of my favorite historical weapons! :D
What a beautiful crossbow. Thanks for another great review.
With that slow as molasses crossbow, this make wonder what will happen if a medieval army got a fairly fast & powerful repeating crossbow like "Joerg Sprave" (slingshot channel) made? Would it change or revolutionize medieval warfare in range weaponry as we know it?
Croz Raven I've heard the Chinese had repeating crossbows during Sun tzu's time. But that was from deadliest warrior so no idea if that's even remotely accurate
Yes, the chinese repeating crossbow was a real thing. However the power was very weak.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Repeating_crossbow
I know the ones from the Boxer Rebellion were cheap mass-produced ones for peasants, but I'm guessing there might be higher quality ones with more power?
Croz Raven Tl Dr: there was simply no need. They didn't really need repeating crossbows at this power level because it took so little training to use. They simply trained hundreds of men to use it. Then they would shoot it off in volleys to get the required effect. Staggering the ranks ment you could have some men firing while others reloaded and thus then need for high powered repeating crossbows was diminished. Plus pulling back the string for repeating shots would have taken a long time so repeating high powered crossbows would have been almost pointless.
Yoren disliked this.
Hehe, i always hated crossbows... TAKE TOO LONG TO LOAD.
Very nice. Looks like a lot of fun to shoot.
That last shot of disappearing bolt was awesome! :D
Seems wildly impractical for battlefield conditions.
PaulTurbo the idea was to have lots people with these shooting at the enemy from long range or from arrow slits in castle walls
PaulTurbo you have to think about the amount of people shooting those things. Normally you would have dozens of people taking turns shooting like when armies had muskets also they were most likely behind cover like in a castle or fort.
If you’ve got an hour to shoot at people it’s pretty good.
Tyranzor Katastrophe the big advantage with this is that anyone use use it. Longbowmen were expensive soldiers because they had to train every day in order to have to strength to draw a 100 to 140 pound longbow. But a crossbow like this doesn’t require the strength or training of a bow. That’s one of the main reasons they were so popular.
that is why you don't send crossbowmen into battle by tehmselfs, they also carried a shield with a stand to protect themselfs from enemy arrows while loading.
Great vid: nothing fancy but you've clearly developed an advanced sense for how to perform informative comparisons. Keep them coming (videos, that is, not projectiles).
Oh boi, I've been waiting for this!
The music around 5:00 with the modern crossbow is HILARIOUS!
Always interesting to see older projectile weapons, as they become the foundation for later firearms. Cause if they hadn o reason to beleive a fast movign projectile could peirce armor it'd never have been made into firearms later. So seeing these mechanical systems is always a joy for me. Thanks Skall.
This channel doesn't help my waiting anxiety for mount and blade bannerlord at all. Awesome twangy toy! 😄
ahhh this is so cool, hope you're enjoying it!
OH MY GOD IT'S HERE I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS MOMENT FOR MONTHS
Enjoyed this one so much I almost forgot to add the like. Planning to make these once my new shop is finished
I've been watching Tods updates on making this!
i like the tech music you put in when you used the modern compound crossbow
Nice choice of music for the modern crossbow, Mr. Skall. It certainly reinforces your idea of "unfair comparison." xD
I love the sound it makes.
That was really cool! Well done.
I just smile to myself imagining a large battle in an open field, men clashing steels, adrenaline pumping, bodies dropping arrows flying, and Jimmy over there furiously spinning the crank to load his crossbow and trying to look tuff while doing so.
That winch mechanism is super cool!
This reload time is exhilarating!
Very cool. Now I want to buy an old school crossbow. Great video.
Thank you I have been looking forward to this. Could you do a video on how it works?
A factor to consider is also return speed, as in the speed at which a bow returns to original shape. Though it may seem like a bow with high draw weight may deliver a faster shot many times it won't because its made of a stiffer material and takes more time to return to zero. I recommend book 1 of the Bowyer's Bible series.
Quite shocked at it's lack of penetration against padded armor, I always thought these things, practically artillery pieces, would easily pierce plate mail. I have heard that silk was used in making lamellar armour, as it's properties somehow can slow down an arrow. Anyhow, awesome video! I now know more then I did before. Stay gold, Huskarl Skallagrim.
That portable mic you have on you is really good, at times i thought it was a voice over but it was not
i love your music choices
I don't know if the trigger is sensible, but sometimes these types of heavy crossbow or tower crossbow have a little safety "U" to put over the trigger. You may want to get one if the trigger is sensible, to keep it from shooting prematurely for 2 reasons.
I got a friend who got his fingertip caught in there when the swoosh happened, you don't that to happen. And secondly, shooting blank hurts the piece of equipement because the force that can't be transmitted to the projectile ends up making it all shake.
It looks like the fletchings on the bolts could be moved back about an inch while still clearing the string. That would make them fly better.
Cutting edges are the key to penetrating soft, fiber-based armour like this. Spike points tend to just get jammed between the fibers (as seen in the video). Think of how much easier it is to cut a piece of rope, compared to breaking it in tension. It would be interesting to see a test using some very sharp, cut-on-contact broadheads.
I like how the music changes for the modern crossbow.
The new Skallagrim workout regiment! Constantly readying medieval crossbows! Order the workout video today! lol
*TODSTUFF ROCKS!*
Would've expected this giant thing to go all the way through the gambeson, can't wait to see how it fares against plate armour or some kind.
nice editing with the different music for the crossbows @Skallagrim :)
Seeing those slow-mo shot really makes you wonder what it's like getting hit with one of those bolts.
You should do some tests to find out what bolt weight is most efficient to use with the crossbow. Surely they have to be pretty darned heavy to get the most out of the draw weight.
Could you use a marker to mark the length of penetration when you are doing this type of test and you can pick up the thrusting object to hold in front of the camera to give a clearer picture
The bolts that go with the new CB look very professionally made and work very well. Was thick dry rawhide ever used as armor in dry weather ? I think it might be stronger against penetration than leather.
That particular swallowtail point is a hunting point not combat. The combat version isn't as wide, and you can see why, against a gambeson the width dissipates all it's energy before it penetrates deep enough to cause a significant wound.
Great video, thanks for sharing!
A little nitpick:
as long as the bolt/arrow/wahteveryouthrow doesn't completely penetrate the target and keeps on flying it dumps all its energy into the target.
The difference is just how they do it. The big heavy bolt that gets stopped at the outer layers mostly acts like a blunt force - like getting punched. The sleeker lighter carbon bolt will transfer a lot of its energy into the flesh, ripping it apart in the wound-channel and making healing slower.
Maybe add a test firing a modern carbon bolt from the windlass crossbow? It would give a better comparison of the relative power of each bow
What if you could fashion a sight for the very end of it? A rough estimation of where the bolts going attached to it similarly to the stirrup?
Love the music! I would suggest some dungeon synth for your next works :)
