    Nate, thanks for taking the time to put together this highly detailed tutorial. You’ve taken pretty much all of the guess work out of using the edge guide. I tend to be a visual learner when it comes to mechanical devices, so this demo was perfect for my needs. Your efforts are most appreciated!

    In case anyone is wondering, this guide perfectly fits the DeWalt DW618 router. Can’t wait to use mine!

      Ughhh I hated the 618... those motors fried so fast. And for a slow start, I figured it would last a while. Plus I bought an extra fixed base for the 616 to use jndera router table, and I was unaware that the Dewalts die FAST if put in a table or horizontal/pantorouter table. At the end of the day, the Bosch wins, by a huge margin, over the Dewalt 616/618 from my experience.

    Basically, it turns your router into a skill saw, but without a cutting guide or jig. Got it! I mainly bought it for square edging with a straight cut bit. I cut with my skill saw, then I use the router to get those nice straight edges for glueups~

    Minimum radius with that center pin and plunge base is about 4.5 inches (9-inch diameter). Any smaller and the center pin base interferes with the plunge base. Causing the router to tilt and not cut perpendicular (90 degrees).

    Very cool video, and very well explained also. I have the Bosch and DeWalt palm router, but will probably get the larger plunge base router soon. This attachment seems like it is well worth the money for all the features it has including the ability to cut circles. I plan on making some Bluetooth boomboxes with a vintage look and feel to them, and this just may be what I need.

    Wow. I’m glad I watched your video. I was under the impression that the guide has the ability to provide micro adjustment when using as a circle cutter. Bosch needs to design a new guide that addresses this important feature that’s lacking along with the pivot pin being incorporated into the assembly and not having to attach it to the work piece which suggests the circle cutter was added in at the last minute. Have you ever tried to install the entire assembly upside down with the edge guide resting against the router housing so the micro adjust could be used when cutting circles?

    First, nice job. Thanks for putting all the work in on that. I just ordered mine.
    Have you tried using something like a screw, nail, or bolt/nut combo for the center locator when using it as a circle jig? The idea of trying to stick or tape a suction cup to the center of the work doesn't fill me with confidence.

    • @natelarge
      @natelarge  Před 4 lety +1

  • @rod1148

    I haven't had much success with the center pin. I've found the duck tape easily comes up a little allowing the center pin to rock back and forth. There must be a better way to secure the pin. Anyone have a similar experience? Thinking about drilling a hole at the center pivot point and using a dowel for a pin. Then, after cutting the circle gluing the pin in place and cutting it flush.

    • @RazorStrap
      @RazorStrap Před 9 měsíci +1

      Root of the problem is that the guide jig to center pin connection point is too high. This acts like a lever pulling on the center pin. Need to find a way to attach down low on the center pin (at work piece level) so the pin length does not act as a lever.

    • @rod1148
      @rod1148 Před 9 měsíci

      @@RazorStrap wish I knew a way to do this. But right now the circle jig isn't very useful if the center pin can't be held firmly in place. I found a couple of videos on DIY circle jigs. I made one and it's far better than the one I bought.

    Good video!! I'm trying to decide which router to buy today.. As for dust collection? I don't hassle with those, most don't work any how! At the end of the day just sweep you're shop..

    • @carterscustomrods
      @carterscustomrods Před 3 lety

      Well, Festool (if you can afford it) makes dust collection a real thing. Their stuff us amazing.
      The dust collection on this isnt bad. But Bosch has the top/bottom dust collector for router tables, and base clearance and those work really well for me.
      I dont use dust collection to prevent sweeping. I use it to collect the dust. That way after I wipe everything down, I dont need to sweep/vacuum since that too just gets dust back into the air. And sawdust is a horrible thing to breathe into your lungs and sinuses.

  • @carterscustomrods
    @carterscustomrods Před 3 lety +1

    Good video, lousy accessory.
    I bought the 1617evspk a few months ago, (after killing my old clunker... a DeWalt) and it was worth every penny, and more. So I've come to expect a certain quality from Bosch now that I have used their router and sliding miter saw. So when I got a good deal on this "deluxe" router guide (essentially $13) I pulled the trigger.
    First off, this should be a standard accessory that comes with the EVSPK package... I mean, a similar item comes with every other high end router.
    Secondly, there is no good system to store it. As a piece that requires protection, due to its tolerance sensitivity required, I have to make a case for it. I assumed that the suitcase that the EVSPK comes in, would have a way to store it. You can store a lot of other accessories in it, so a spot in the case for this would've been great, and a no brainers at Bosch R&D.
    Lastly, quality. A big issue. This "Deluxe" edge guide is worth the (essentially) $13 I paid, but no more. Die cast aluminum.... c'mon Bosch!?!? I get that certain things need to be done on the cheap (like the garbage router tables they make) but this should've been done in a way that didnt feel like a power tool from 1972. And the circle jig.... *@%$ that thing!!!!! It's the only circle jig I've ever seen that had no good way to mount the center pin to the workpiece.
    All in all... Harbor Frieght makes a $60 Router that comes with an edge guide that is only slightly less in terms of function.
    So the "Deluxe" guide gets a 2 out of 10 from me. Does Bosch just assume we will be using an aftermarket system so they just said "Who cares? Put in in a box, but make sure there's no way to store it properly. Also, force the users to hold down the circle pin with.... tape! Muahhahaaaaaa!"

    What is the distance between the INSIDE thumb screw holes and rail slot that you mention at 14:44? The OUTSIDE rail slots should be about 4" center to center, the inner ones look a little over half that?

    • @natelarge
      @natelarge  Před 4 lety +1

      yes, the outside rail slots are ~3 15/16" on center; the inside are ~2 1/4" on center.The inside rail slot hole are smaller with an opening around 1/4".

      Direction of router only matters when one side of the bit is touching material.
      When your plowing through on a dado type cut it doesn't matter. Sweeping to the right will make router want to move away from you. Sweeping to the left will make it want to move towards you. Both are just as violent and strong in terms of force applied
