  • In this step by step tutorial I will give you a full walkthrough of how to replace the fuel tank vent on my FS 131 R Stihl string trimmer. The part was diagnosed as defective due to fuel bubbling out onto the air filter, causing the machine to flood repeatedly.

Just out of curiosity, what year is you date of manufacture? I have a 2019 model 91r same problem for the past 4 years. I’ve always opened the tank to release the pressure but it’s getting old doing this. I’m gonna have to try it out. It almost seemed like a messed up carb or clogged spark guard.

Mine is model year 2023. I bought it brand new last year and had issues with it from day 1. It’s been a few weeks since I replaced that fuel tank vent and it has been running great since

There is on some models a vent thru the gas cap.

Hello, could you tell me your choice of best aftermarket carb for my Stihl FS110 WEEDEATER ? Thanks for your wisdom! ❤

Honestly they’re all junk. Even the original Stihl carbs are made in China. Whichever carb you buy to replace with I would just make a habit to clean it often.

I have the same trimmer and a similar problem. I've been losing power after trimming for a while and have trouble keeping it running. I've replaced fuel filter, spark plug and air filter. When I open gas cap there is a ton of vacuum built up inside the tank which makes me think i've got a vent problem--either a bad valve or plugged hose and its building up pressure/vacuum inside as gas is drawn out. I don't have fuel leaking into air filter though. Where'd you get the filter?

Got the fuel tank vent from my local Stihl dealer for about $10. They had a drawer full of them. I talked to the service tech and he said these tank vents are a known issue on the 131’s, so I wouldn’t be surprised if yours needs replaced.

@@StrongTurf Thanks for that and for the video. It came at just the right time and I think i'll go find one and switch it out.

Yes the 131 is still running great since doing this. I use it 4-5 days a week

This is by far the worse design Stihl has made! It will keep failing over and over. I’m on my 3rd vent.

Agreed. Buddies of mine keep trying to get me to switch to Echo trimmers, but Stihl equipment is all I’ve ever used. Maybe I’ll make the switch one day.

@@StrongTurfI wouldn’t. I work at a park and a lot of the echos we have are insanely underpowered. It’s all preference though obviously.
Stihl KM131R is my fav machine ever made.
