  • The Esbit 585 and a simple firelighting tip for lighting solid fuel tabs.
This is a great little stove. OK it's limited as to what it can do but for simple brew ups, making a cup of coffee or tea or boiling water for rehydrating food it is great.

Just an update on this little stove. I use a liquid fuel stove in this and it works great. Shoe polish tin with some fire rope, a small amount of meth and job done, easy to light and a very easy brew up. Thanks for sharing.

I saw the knife video before bed. Beautiful and yippee your out in the woods... great old oak, must have been fern in it's head all airy. Thanks for sharing the knife and the little stove. I don't go in for fuels other than wood, wood is free. :) I do have a Trangia and it's stove but rarely use it... I like it for making charclothe. It just doesn't last very long. Anyway, I'm glad YOU like it... it's nice to have favorite things to use in the woods. :)

I have this and use it with hexi blocks, fire gel blocks and - now my favourite - a tiny (British made) Speedster Stove. This little set is perfect for my hot drinks, soups and noodle meals, I’ve also used it to heat through all sorts of canned meals, 10 / 10 for a solo camper / bikepacker. I haven’t tried burning twigs in it but would imagine it would work.

I uses this stove. I find that one solid fuel tab isn't always enough to get a rolling boil. The fuel tabs make clean up easier, but I usually add wood and burn both. I've used all wood on several occasions. Folks tell me that the plastic feet on the burner will melt from this, but they haven't. It's always worked great with no issues, I've done it loads of times. Love this little stove set, great pc of kit for the money.

I should add that I've learned to cup the hexi-tabs in aluminum foil, like a "tea-light" candle, it dramatically increases the burn time of the hexi-block and one 14g block seems to do it every time now.

A few drops of hand sanitizer on the cube can take the place of the cotton and Vaseline, to help with lighting. A windscreen around the stove will definitely help with lighting and efficiency. I use Coghlans Odor Proof zipper lock bags for my Esbit cubes; their size small bag 6"x6.5"will hold 12 cubes perfectly. Great video, nice product demonstration; really enjoyed it. Subscribed. ATB.

Excellent video! Although my comments are also a little late, I have to say that your system is quite foolproof. A lot easier than matches or lighters (I used hexamine stoves for years as a soldier, but find it harder to light them in non tropical (windier) climes. The Vaseline soaked cotton fires up first strike with a ferro rod and refuses to be blown out! Also adds usefully to the heat output of the Esbit tablet. The foil can also be used as a simmering aid by turning up 2 sides and thus limiting airflow, which makes it burn more slowly (probably works better than a Trangia simmer ring). A pot cosy can also help. This little stove is not as limited as you may think.

The stove be a little limited, but the fuel tabs are not. I've cooked full meals using Esbit cubes, and I've also made a full pot of coffee. Add a small skillet to the Esbit cooker, and you greatly increase its usefulness.
I've never had any trouble lighting an Esbit of a Coghlan's fuel tab. Scrape the surface with a knife to make some dust, and it lights with a ferro rod. And it's easy with a lighter or a match. But some carry a one ounce bottle of alcohol or lighter fluid, put a drop or two on any kind of fuel starter, or on an Esbit cube, hit it with a ferro rod, and it bursts into flame.
