The Norway Campaign 1940

  • In 1940, as typical history videos go, Germany simply invaded Norway, but not much context is given. In reality, the Norway campaign has a much more interesting story. What was the actual reason for the German invasion? Why does no one mention that it was in fact the British who broke Norwegian neutrality first? Why did Winston Churchill become Prime Minister after the failure of Norway despite it being his idea? How did Germany win in Norway in 1940? Find out all this and more in this video.

As a Norwegian I feel like the Brits exploited us big league. I live in one of the mining towns that were a big objective during the war, and the town elders have only good things to say about the Germans. One story I was told involved a Wehrmacht unit leaving their horse carriage outside of a shop or café and they let some local kids play on the carriage while it was put. Sadly an accident happened where a little girl fell off either the carriage or the horse and she passed away, leaving one soldier a sobbing mess. That one story helped humanize the Wehrmacht to my teenage self.

From all I know the British never had scruples to use others and exploit them and to divide and conquer, whether in North America, in India or Africa - they came and destroyed. And they gained power and wealth but never the hearts of people.
The incident you describe adds to what I found out about the reputation of German soldiers in the past - in many places, in Ukraine, in North Africa and elsewhere people witnessed them as kind and fair in contrast to the "liberators" that came after them, Americans, British and Russians. Nonetheless, atrocities happened on all sides - I know that very well but I also know my fellow countrymen and that they mostly have good hearts.
BTW my mother's best friend married a Norwegian man in the late 1950s and she visited her in Norway and always was fascinated by the country....

"They were nice to a kid so they must be good" dumbest thing i've ever heard, and from whom? Never have i heard of any old people who "only had good things to say" about the Germans. I'd say invading your country is a pretty bad thing to do.

Reading Finland's Foreign minister Väinö Tanner's memoires of the Winter War. The pressure and promises from France and Britain to keep the war going were pretty nuts.
When Finland needed 30 000 men right now they said:
'You'll get 6 000 men in 1-1½ months, just stop negotiating with Soviet Union and officially ask for help from us' 'If you make peace now you'll be on Germany's side' 'we won't help you at all in the future if you make peace' etc.
Best of all few hours before Finland signed the peace treaty with Soviet Union, the British ambassador Vereker told Tanner that "Despite Sweden and Norway denying us passage, our plans are still in effect and are now completely ready and our help will come to you quickly. Don't tell Norway and Sweden".
Swedish foreign minister Gunther told Tanner earlier that "the whole western plan to help Finland is childish, it will drag the whole north into the war. We will not leave a single railway intact."

@@ZoomerHistorian North and south Norway were pretty much disconnected other than by shipping lanes, the Germans MASSIVELY expanded the railways and other infrastructure effort, and a lot of small and medium sized business benefitted greatly from working with the Germans. It seems to be a trend from what I have heard from first hand and second hand accounts in different regions occupied by Germany, I have heard many a time about roads being expanded or fixed, schools and hospitals being built in remote or poor areas etc.
Absurdly different from what I grew up hearing about I'll tell you that much.

We in Scandinavia say Motherland not Fatherland. That shows our old religion is still here. No christians or muslims will ever win our hearts. And the germans did some shitty stuff in Norway like taking the food from the inhabitants and leaving them starving. They also sent ppl to KZ. So it was not a mutual thing the occupation of Norway. We who have family who remembers know the truth.
