Since the start of the uk lockdown I decided to start with the Batman mythos and it was your Golden, Silver and Bronze Age videos that I used as inspiration to build my own personal catalogue of the most important and interesting continuity titles to read which I have so I’ve covered from the dc #27 debut of the bat in 1937 and now i’m currently reading Batman: broken city
I know this is just a small difference in opinion, but although I recognize Jim Aparo's contributions to Batman lore larger and more impactful, Norm Breyfogle will always be the ultimate Batman artist in my eyes. My first two comic books were Tec 617 and 627 and both stories stayed with me forever because of Norm 😢
After watching the entire Batman history throught your videos, I gotta say is a CRIME to start reading batman from Year One onewards. There are so many events and characters relevant for the Batman mythos before 1985 that I'm amazed everyone recomends reading Modern Batman only. This EXTENSIVE retrospective that you have done had made me appreciate more the vintage and classic Batman stories. Thank you Salazar.
One of the most interesting times for Batman comics! I didn’t know that Miller was upset at Denny for making Year One in continuity, but it makes sense why he left Batman for so long afterwards.
To be honest this proves something to me. Miller doesn't like Batman unless it's the version from DKR. If that's not someone who doesn't care about the character I don't know what is. I hope this gets people to realize that year one was the only significant thing miller did for Batman. To be honest O'Neil might've contributed a lot to year one but again I don't know for sure I just think it's fair to assume because unlike Miller, O'Neil actually cared about Batman.
Yeh, Miller was a psycho, but summer 1986 will (right before starting high school) will always be the iconic year DKR came out, for me. It was the first time I special ordered a series by mail. I kept receiving extra duplicate copies of each issue for some reason. (Decades later I sold three 2nd edition first issue copies of DKR to my comic shop.) Summer '86!! Best summer of my childhood.
Something that you probably should've mentioned in your mask of the phantasm video is that the character in the film "Arthur Reaves" was actually a character from the comics. I think there might be people who think he was created for the film but he actually wasn't he was from the comics. In the comics he was a councilman and he hated Batman just like in the film.
I hope you continue with the modern Batman. Year One continues to be not just one of my favorite Batman stories of all time, but the quintessential origin story of Batman, too (and a much better book than TDKR). And Alan Grant, John Wagner and Norm Breyfogle are my favorite Batman creative team of all time.

This was my era of Batman growing up. I started reading at Knightfall while TAS was on TV. Then I remember going to comic shops, bookstores, flea markets, or wherever I could find to mine for Batman comics. I really loved those days of hunting for comics and building the Batman mythology issue by issue. Or finding a good stack of comics for a good price. Sadly most of those places don't exist anymore and the few places that sell comics are vigilant about having high dollar back issues. I have nearly every Batman comic from 86-2012. I've had Batman comics the longest. The 90s was a great time to be a Bat-fan. Lol
Couldn't agree with you more about _Year One_ being better than _DKR_ . For whatever reason, I read _DKR_ thirteen years after the fact, and several years after I'd read _YO_ , so it could never live upto the hype. Though Breyfogle was one of the two Batartists of my childhood (the other being Aparo), I found his style too loose and wobbly at the time. I appreciate him more now.
When the Crisis began I was grateful that the whole parallel world idea was going to be scrapped...but I became angry when I saw they were using it to give new origins for the heroes and give up any past continuity. This was especially true of Superman, but they didn't have to rewrtite Batman. I especially hated the way they changed Jason Todd.(That's why I voted to have the Joker kill him,which he did.)
Year one is one my favorite Batman stories ever but also one the best origin stories ever told (I would say it's superior to Batman Begins). The best part is the focus being told Jim Gordon's perspective, since allows the story to portray Batman as this mysterious creature from the night, showing the effect his presence in Gotham has on the city and it's people (ex: Jim Gordon becomes Batman ally and begins to fight against a corrupt system, Selina Kyle is inspired by the caped crusader to become Catwoman).
The Batman of my early '80s childhood (1982-1988) will always be my favorite era. The Dark Knight Detective was in ultimate form in the mid '80s with Brave and the Bold (art by Jim Aparo, stories by Mike Barr) being the best Bat book to buy, until he formed The Outsiders and then THAT became my favorite book. Batman stories were grimy, sometimes creepy, and even international- one minute in the backstreets of Gotham ghetto, next page following a clue to the backstreets of Istanbul or Budapest! Frank Miller's Dark Knight graphic novel in '86 put him over the top in mainstream media.
Hey Salazar there’s a Batman comic I read when I was a kid I’m trying to find. My dad used to get me these bagged bundles of DC comics around 10 or 15 newsstand issues all random stories and issues and there was this one Batman story where he’s in the sewer and rescues this blind woman who’s being held hostage down there by her father or maybe some guy who pretended he was her father because she was blind something like that. Every time I try to google it i only come up with ratcatcher or killer croc stories. I was hoping you might know it since you’re a crazy scholar of the pre knightfall stuff. I love your channel btw I’ve watched every video keep them coming
There is prequel, The Man Who Falls that explains all the events on how Bruce Wayne became Batman. As understand, it is the main source for the movie Batman Begins. I have tried to find it, but no luck at all. Seems DC is planning for reprint.
I will. The Modern Bat will not be a complete series. I will upload them maybe once a month or every other video. In the meantime, I will continue the chronological Batman publication and that includes Prodigal, Troika, Contagion and all the other storylines that came after Knightfall. It's only taking longer because I need a bit of time (and money) to make it happen. ;)

Miller has many good stories from his daredevil run to Batman Year one and 300. Even TDKR (which I'm not much of fan) it was very influential and important story. It was only after 90's and beginning of the 2000's he passed his prime and his works suffered a fall of quality.

Hi, what do you think of Scott Snyder's run on Batman in the New52 reboot ? I often read he is compared to Dan Slott's run on the Amazing Spider-Man, which is not a compliment at all. I would say Tom King is in fact the equivalent of Slott, they both despise and don't understand the character they claim to love and the fanbase, worse in being unprofessional toward us. Knowing you're a Batman expert I'll be happy to have your opinion on Snyder because I consider the Court of owls storyline overrated.
I'm not a fan of Snyder's run. It's not that it's bad, but rather it gets repetitive with The Joker and ridiculous by the end with Gordon, robots and flowers. A strong start that doesn't end well.

I was raised by their art. Im from '88.
In my humble opinion Jim Aparo defined the look of Batman like Curt Swan did for Superman.

Year one is the best Batman comic ever. The script is stunning and the art is on another level. A real masterpiece
