Mate, where's the link for the book?
If I were a billionaire, this is the kind of boat I would want. Super yachts just make my eyes glaze over.
Could not agree more
Well, since it's a two million boat, I'd get one long before a billion.
This just popped up on my feed, and I'm happy to say that I'm one of those that has been towed by her when she was still a Rescue cruiser, not in an emergency but due to a cracked propeller shaft.
Was also a joy to watch her break ice for the fishing vessels in the winters passing outside my apartment window.
This is what an explorer yacht should be.
Now that is a sea-worthy ship. That pilot house is incredible. Thanks for showing us this beauty John.
Glad you enjoyed it - thanks for watching!
What a magnificent vessel! As an ex-mariner with a scant 5 years at sea as a cadet and 3/O this is my dream vessel. I'd be deeply honoured and privileged to crew on this vessel with this Master.
That's a propper boat.. no huge owners cabin.. no jacuzzi.. everyone has similar sleeping environment.... a working vessel.. wow... I dig it...!!
The pilot house, i thought, was amazing. That was until i saw a machine shop in the engine room. Wow.
I pilot and do maintenance on my vessel. I imagine there was welder somewhere handy also.
What a vessel! It's like a purpose built explorer vessel that eschews luxury in favor of a spartan-esque existence. Sadly though, it sounds like they were just doing 'a job' as opposed to having fun while doing it. Unless they were pulling into ports to explore and getting out into the water to swim, or fish and maybe dive some it just seems like a mission specific vessel and not really something fun to do. While I get the idea, and the journey certainly seems cool, I don't know if I would want to leave my family for that long just to live and work on a boat that really didn't do anything but travel. I want to actually explore different ports, islands, regions of the Oceans, fish and swim in the ocean. But that's me
I, too, prefer function over form. However were she mine, I'd have to make a few changes (most of them to keep my 'first mate' from forming a mutiny. I, too, would not care to simply sail for the purpose of covering the oceans. I am an explorer. There's so much more to see than just the sea. Thousands of miles on a crossing must have an objective greater the distance traveled. My ideal vessel would provide range to go wherever I may want to go, to do so safely as possible regardless of conditions encountered, and dependability (I love that is vessel is ice rated). Composite and aluminon hulls would make me so nervous I'd never feel comfortable with either type when thousands of miles lie between me and dry land. This vessel is not ideal in terms of comfort, but that is a situation addressed with a few minor changes. In terms of seaworthiness it would be hard to beat considering its size. There aren't many other vessels in the 60 to 65 foot range I'd choose over this one - especially given all pertinent factors, i.e., range, safety, construction, redundancies, and initial cost. Great vessel for about 2.2.m US.
Oh, my 'first mate' is presently going on and on with 'does it have a washer and dryer? 'No, washer, no dryer, I'm not going to sea.' Blah, blah, blah. I don't know. Maybe one possible upgrade should be the addition of a 'plank'? ; )
So, you just went up the mountain, Mr. Hillary? You didn’t do anything fun up there?
@@charliecharles-xw4ub 23.35 meters puts it in the 75-80ft range, which is a *very* significant size increase in boats this size compared to 60-65
@@DanielOlaiDanielsen :My bad. Math skills must have been on hold. The added length, an actual 76+ footer, is a huge plus. Now I really want one pretty much just like it.
@@charliecharles-xw4ub I would like to hear your opinion on the Bering 65 Explorer. This also looks like a tough little boat to me.
I am so impressed with this style of vessel that I rightly have no words.
Thank you John. 🍷
Thank you also to the Captain and crew. Amazing what you have done! 🤗 ❤
Thanks for the comment! I appreciate it!
What a tough little ship. A 16mm hull is insane😁. Another great video John, you always find interesting boats for your viewers.
Thanks! I appreciate it :-)
Outstanding! This is what circumnavigating the world is all about. Congratulations to the owner and crew!
Couldn't agree more!
Thank you for such a thorough walk through! This was not a hyped sales pitch. Appreciate your professionalism.
Thanks for the comment - i appreciate it 🫡
An amazing vessel comprehensively fitted. Only thing I would fit to her would be a single stainless handrail drop bar across lower deck access stairs. A necessity in large confused seas.
I'd love to work on a ship like this. That engine room workshop is amazing!
Thanks for showing us this unique vessel. Incredibel design and the engine room is something outstanding.
I _Love_ the feeling of Strength you get from the structure of this type
Knowing a bit of Engineering - I kept running numbers as you narrated things
And now? it's 2nd Life is as a *_Livable_* ... POWERFUL Yacht- ...Awesome
Wow, seems built to military standards. Hell of a ship.
Wow I’m at a loss for words. Honestly, this video was so enjoyable to watch. I was hooked before you went into the Engine room but after I saw that room I could not believe my eyes. It’s absolutely breathtaking!
I realize that sounds weird but when you love boats like I love boats you know exactly what I mean.
What a classy ship she is.
ASTRA is now officially my new favorite. Sure wish I had money to buy a boat like her but she’s too rich for my blood. I’ve got the know how and the experience but no money.
I love this boat!!!!!
Peace✌️😎🇺🇸🤣😎🇺🇸
I'm 2 minutes in and I'm in love.
700k fuel bill, YIKES. Then again that only just fills some superyachts.
That is a bridge and an engine room to die for, she's perfect in all regards.

What an incredible vessel! Made to survive the elements while hdlping others. I will take it!
Oh, she's beautiful. I think she may be the most spectacular boat you've ever covered. I love her so much. 💕
I knew my subscribers would love this boat 😍 Thanks for watching!
A very good walk through of an awesome vessel, probably your best yet. The touches of a professional mariner like Capt Ian were very, very obvious!
The capability of Astra is impressive, to do that Cape to Cape circumnavigation is enormous and not for the faint hearted.
Thanks! I appreciate it 🫡
Absolutely a wonderful workung and go anywhere ship. I loved seeing that bridge and you see someone or a like minded group of people who love the sea working together figured out the correct equipment needed to put on her so they wouldn't have troubles when out in the middle of nowhere, they have what they need to stay safe. It didn't say anything about how much food storage onboard did it, atleast I don't remember if it did. But being able to travel that far I 'd say you must have many freezers, dry storage and wet storage that must be rather large. Thank you for sharing this with us and looking forward to seeing the next video you post. 2 thumbs up my friend.
Thanks! 🫡
Great Little ship all around. Love the beefy work horse look of it all away around. Even though it does not have that convertible warm little home on the ocean that I would like, it has everything else. Even though it does not have that little home, I give this 1 two thumbs up.
Love these small ships! Well done!
Thank you sir! 🫡
now that is an explorer yacht! the engine room and bridge are amazing
Probably the best vessel tour I have ever seen. Well Done!
Thanks! I really appreciate it 🫡
I love that ship.
What an amazing boat with an amazing story. Thanks for the video, it was really interesting.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the comment 🫡
9000 miles range. That’s insane. This thing is much better than any super yacht out there and built better too.
Excellent boat for a relaxing winter-week on the Bering Sea...
Nice vessel. Tough yet beautiful.
I liked her when she was painted grey and was for sale for under $400K couple of years ago.
Wow, i am so in love with this beautiful vessel.
Glad you like it!
Love this little ship. All I need.
Well narrated. Fascinating stuff. ✅
Thanks! I appreciate it!
Nice boat, built to it’s purpose.
Perfect for Baltic, Norway, maybe Greenland.
You demonstrated what happens when not stabilized, is the stabilizers retractable ?
Unfortunately I don’t believe it can get back into professional use, otherwise it would make a nice tug for hauling small barges on long trips.
15 / 30 T pull will be enough on small barges.
Even in icy water 👍👍
The main engine model, is very well known for its low consumption and reliability 👍
Yes, the stabilisers are retractable so that they are flush with the boat 🫡
Great looking Engine Room and Bridge
Those magnus effect stabs zeroed out that roll. Incredible.
This is a one off .i doubt you would find such a well fitted explorer boat of this size any where on the planet. 16 ml hull plates says it all.this little ship can take anything the sea can throw at it .thanks for the tour really enjoyed it .
Your’e welcome 🫡 thanks for watching
What a dazzling beauty!
Thx Y.B.

Great video tour thanks bro
Great boat, great video, thanks!!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching 👁️👁️
wow, I'm in love. That bridge is awesome!
Glad you like it!
Amazing boat. Great video. Great job.
Thank you very much!
What a fantastic and capable boat
Been waiting for this. Hope you explain the stabilizer
Absolutely! It is after the engine room tour
Great video tour of a fabulous boat. Wish I could afford the price tag, I'd buy it in a heart beat.
My kind of boat 😊 Great tour as always
Thanks for watching!
A great sea worthy vessel. Good showing. Love this world capable vessel. 🐻🙏🇺🇸

👍Thank You for sharing it! 🥂🍾
You bet! Thanks for watching 🫡
Thanks! I appreciate it
Thank you. Very interesting.
Okay, I asked my wife to get me the Astra for Christmas, but I'll likely end up with the book instead, thanks for sharing this tour!
what a beautiful vessel . now if i had money this is what i want.
IMPRESSIVE!
That is a damn good price for all that boat. 👍
Amazing boat and video of it. Thanks John! 😎
Question: If operating in ice, are the Magnus Effect stabilizers more vulnerable to damage than something like a gyroscopic stabilizer (Seakeeper?) that's completely contained within the hull? I wonder if those protrusions, even when stowed into dormant mode, could get caught up. If a Captain/Owner this experienced is happy with that solution, I suppose it's not a real issue, but I do wonder. 🤔
Glad you enjoyed the video! 🫡 I am guessing that the arms are retracted when navigating through ice. Once they are retracted they are flush with the hull.
The magnus master rotor arms have a small housing built in to the bilge keel to protect them in ice.

@@Iain_Macneil nice, thanks Iain! 😎
This is such an great boat.
Man, boat vs the seas. This is not a foo foo boat loaded with bling. Safety of crew is foremost and the electronics are top rate. My type of boat. Great video.
That is one awesome boat....I'd want to go thru seas like that....in a boat like that too!!
John, that is one BADASS little ship!
💯%
@YachtBuoy I was amazed at the refit of Lone Ranger back in the 90s when Peter Luis bought her. After working on that ship for two-and-a-half or three weeks on my shift, I am very impressed with this refit, especially for the size of the boat and its capabilities. Please bring more of these videos.
Watched a good vid on this boat and owner, she has a great drought for her size, could say she has a good foot hold the ocean 😊.
Very Impressive ⚓️⚓️⚓️❤️
What a beauty - built to explore seas that l just love - The Southern Ocean

I've been watching videos about pleasure boats on the NautiStyles channel. Nice as they are, they seem like toys compared to this machine. Impressive. This raw and unpolished "proper ship" feeling has a special appeal those luxury yachts just don't have.
Beautiful Beast of a vessel...
Coming from a former ship builder, that is one impressive ship!
Fantastic boat well kitted out that's my prefect boat you can keep your fancy mega yachts I'll take that boat over any of them
Love it, she is perfect.
beautiful engine room, would love to see a twin engine set up on the main engines .
IIRC single engines are preferred in ice-rated vessels, twin screw designs are at greater risk of prop damage from ice
That's a boat to feel safe in
I am from Sweden and from the island the she was operating as a SAR vessel. I remember when I use to work on her as a young boy. It was really interesting to see what she has become😀
Thanks for the comment 🫡 CZcams is certainly a small world when it comes to things like this 🌎
That intrmtal muse really touched my heart
🫡
This channel needs to get to 250 k !
Thanks! I really appreciate it 🫡🙌
Easy to have a large engine room when you don't have those fancy saloons and large state rooms. This is my kind of ship.
Great video. Thanks
Thanks for watching! 🫡
The pilot house is sick
Great exploration vessel but not really a family cruising yacht. Thanks for bringing us this video. I have been watching this ship for a few months after finding the circumnavigation video they put out. 🍻
Glad you enjoyed it!
Got my book today! can't wait to dive in.

BOAT BOUY is the absolutely best at what he does. BOAT REVIEWS. You, cover sea vessels down to their last nut & bolt and absolutely ENJOY it! What a great review. Thank you.
Wow, thanks! I appreciate it 🙌
@@YachtBuoy You're welcome. 👏🏾
You came to Hobart and I didn't see you!
I would have hitched a ride!
pull up in one of these at the Monaco GP
Looks like a beautiful battering ram for massive waves. :-)
Great job 👍❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thank you! Cheers!
Superb engine room.
That sailing yaght next to her is pretty sweet too.
I just can't get over how awesome I think this boat is....I've always dreamed of doing the same thing as this guy....if I ever came in to a fortune I'd do the same thing. I love how this boat isn't all sterile looking and dressed out in luxury interior.....this is a working boat....it's clean but you can tell it gets used. This is a true exploring man's ship....I bet this thing could sail right thru a super typhoon.
I wonder about those Mitzi motors. I operated large Excavators and Draglines/cranes when working. All the big Excavators supplied with Dual 6 pot Mitzi donk's the boss swapped out for cats as the Mitzi's tended to Overheat when working 24/7.
Just wondering?.
I'm defo getting the book!!

Thanks!
Thanks for the SuperThanks! I appreciate it 🫡
great boat
Bravo! 🛥️🛟 Bravo!!!
Yeah cool boat! Would be cool to own
Wet deck plus good scuppers go hand in hand

Helluva ship...!
