@@anbux5744 it’s not a town. It’s a small area of Leslie county. I’d call it a rural residential area. Not really any businesses or anything. Mostly just homes. Some really nice ones and some not so nice ones. The nearest town is Hyden and is a few minutes drive from there, but most people just go to Hazard (Perry county) for shopping and stuff and it’s about a 30 minute drive away. It’s not as isolated as you’re being led to believe.
Thanks for these interviews - really enjoying the diversity xx
I like how she speaks. She is direct, says exactly what she has to say, and stops. I need to learn how to do that.
Yessss lol same
This made me laugh. Me too, me too!!!
Her honestly is refreshing in this day in age.
I am like that and doing that makes it hard to make friends. People really have to get to know me and my so-called abruptness when I call a spade a spade, so to speak. I have no tact and find it very hard to lie to someone about their looks, or a musicians not so great skills on their instrument, or a lousy singer who can't carry a tune in a bucket etc.
Maybe you and I are opposites of the communications spectrum. LOL!
What I saw in her was not really wanting to open up to the interviewer, and not knowing how to answer many of his questions without feeling like she was being too open. After all, people she knows and who know her family might hear it.
Me too
Im from this same county. Thank you to whoever you are for coming here and shining a light on these beautiful people. Poverty and social issues do not make you bad people. We fight stereotypes constantly. We are good people. People who deserve better. Thank you!
Beautiful comment. Home is Home- you are always attached to home no matter where you move. Memories keep us attached to our home, no matter how poor life was while we were growing up.

Hey it's not about where your from it's about are you a contributing member of society. Seems to me this gal contributes nothing and is probably a lifelong welfare taker as is her child. Get off your butt and get a job. If there's no local job move. This country has too many able bodied people who are lazy like this gal is. How do i know she's lazy...her front porch is squalor. That has nothing to do with money.

I've not heard a single one of these Appalachian interview subjects say they wish they were somewhere else. These wonderful souls complain much, much less than more typical Americans who have been raised with the best of every possible benefit and material advantage. I haven't heard one of them claim to be a victim or that life isn't fair or "poor old me." There's a massive lesson in that about life, although I'm not smart enough to figure out what it is. I mean seriously, I'm not saying she's a bad person, but she seems to have a low IQ, has accomplished nothing with her life, doesn't have custody of her child, and can't articulate a single thing she has learned in her 30 years. I'm from Australia & I just adore listening to this deeply american southern accent, to me it sounds almost rythmical the way it flows from the lips. To me it's crazy that as a country/continent as large as mine Australia our accent remains the same pretty much throughout, yet America you can go from state to state & it's incredible just how different the sound, twang can be.

I am proud to be from Leslie county & Appalachia. I grew up not far from Hell for Certain. I love that people are genuinely interested in this part of the US. I thought we were forgotten. ❤
I think we are just shocked and fascinated that people can be so simple minded, drawing government checks, not working, out of shape, unhealthy, uneducated, and yet they are like, "yeah, this is a great life." LOL. They need to contribute a bit to society and not just sponge off the rest of us.

I really miss just lighting a big fire and sitting with friends. I am assuming you are young. Please don't be afraid to make your life whatever you want it to be. As a fellow eastern Kentuckian, I love seeing our way of life shown in a non-judgemental way by the media. Eastern Kentuckians are different than anyone you'll ever meet. We grow up in isolation, seemingly forgotten by the rest of the world, but we survive and we live interesting and sometimes difficult lives. We are tough, resilient, and wise.
Do you mean "wise" by feeding your infants Mountain Dew instead of breast milk or baby formula? Do you mean "tough" by sitting around collecting government checks? Do you mean resilient by, hmmm, what the heck could you possibly mean by resilient? You have no jobs, no industry, no strategic thinkers who can figure out ways to earn money and contribute to society. Trust me, the guy making these videos is silently judging them. These Appalachian videos are the equivalent of people looking at a car crash as they pass it.
To be honest, I would rather grow up with a family that loves me than one that hates me... This made me cry.

Dear Samantha, you are an instant U Tube sensation! Fans everywhere! Such a lovely mountain gal.God blessed you with a heavenly accent.
Both of my grandparents are from WV in the foothills. The culture is unique, very tight knit and family is everything.
WV has foothills? LoL Just kidding. I was born there, altho I've not lived there for many yrs. Besides family/friends, the mountains are what I miss the most. They continue to level them for housing & retail development, awa mountaintop-removal mining, so there are fewer of them than I recall from my childhood, but what remains is about as close to heaven as u can get, except for perhaps earth's oceans.
Neighbors too. Y'all look out for each other. The less you have, the closer you will be to God. And that is real happiness. Blessings friend.
Both sides of my family originated in WV but ended up moving all over in search of economic opportunity

In my 50+ age group, us Gen X’ers will be the last to remember what life was like before the internet. I’m only 30; just born in 1990 and I remember life before smart phones, Google, social media, online research, etc. I remember classrooms not having computers, we had to use Dewey Decimal system to look up books and do homework, we had to use a map to travel places on family vacations. Sure internet existed but it wasn’t accessible to average people to accomplish daily tasks until the last 25 years. Even cell phones were simple with no internet access; and they were outrageously priced. I remember before most people had cell phones we had to call customer service at the grocery store so the employee could page my mom to come take a call because I needed to tell her we were out of milk lol
I am 56. I sell on ebay, and I stay in touch with friends and family on Facebook. Those things are my benefits of being online. And like most people these days I have a smart phone, but I have had one cell phone or another since 1997. Now, being 56 I have spent more of my life without those things than I have with them, and consequently I have wrestled with the question of was life better before cell phones and the internet or is it better now with the modern technology that enables me to work from home and be my own boss, and the smart phone that enables me to do my work anywhere? I have given a lot of thought to the question, I mean years of it, and about a year ago I finally answered it and my answer was that life was better before. I felt free then in a way that no young person today will ever feel. It's sad.
I'm an 80's baby. I remember what it was like before the internet. Good times.

I have family that have a heavy country accent. Not once did I feel ashamed of them. My granny’s accent was precious. I’ve noticed I’ve been saying a few words like them.
"Hell for Certain" gotta love it.
Epic!
My Dad used to call where his kin came from in Kentucky, "Hell's half acre"
That's a brand name that hit the target
Great band name.
@@ianfreddy3804 Yep
These stories are so touching and fascinating. These are very good videos to show people different sides America and we all need to be as one nation.
Right! Most people just want to live a happy and decent life, it's not hard to understand!
My family came from Kentucky, and WestVirginia. And I'll tell you they're some of the best people I've ever known.
Being in the wilderness is a great blessing. As for the accent if you are raised here, that accent means love to you. Their accent was way more thick then this in the elderly 40 years ago. It's so nice to be here now, I don't have to deal with south fla. heat anymore or the bad people down there anymore. The only thing bad here is last winter when the heat went out for a week.
"what is the most important lesson you've learned in your 30 years?" ... "I don't know" ... and she is simply happy with no regrets. She has learned a lot in life, because she's happy. she just doesn't know that she's got what everyone seeks. Thanks Mark for a beautiful interview of a fascinatingly beautiful woman. *hugs*
In her defense, that’s a difficult question to answer on the spot. Also, I’m not sure you can really single out one particular lesson in life that is more important than all the others. Life is a little deeper and more complicated than simplifying it down to one single lesson.
She seems kind of slow. Like she's not really giving much thought to the questions Mark is asking. Probably has a learning disability.
@@heckinbasedandinkpilledoct7459 she stated she has epilepsy and anxiety during the interview. It can leave a person with a flat affect. She seems to deal with her life fairly well of course we don't see all. I just think she's super polite and a down to earth lovely woman.
@@automaticsweetheart2009 well they don't know the outside life, and a lot of times that is a good thing, you can't miss what you've never had...
@4eyes2sea...excellent comment young lady!
I grew up in southern WV and I love and miss her accent.....for the region, it's pure and unaffected by the outside. It's the accent and mannerisms i grew up around but I've lost a lot of mine and have most others have also because of TV, traveling and moving away. When I moved from my home I had to alter my accent to get along but I would still get teased or ridiculed sometimes for being from the area I was from. Now being away for 30 yrs most of it is gone....but when I here her voice I miss home.
She seems like a nice person. Stories of people teasing her about her accent hurt my heart.
A beautiful soul inside and out! This is my favorite interview you've done as well as my favorite series!
I've loved your channel since the first video I saw. I love hearing people's life stories and you channel puts them out so wholly and raw. your Appalachia interviews are definitely the most interesting to me. I started by watching your skid row videos and loved listening to all the stories, but these ones hit different and I dont quite know why. I think its just the difference in culture and the dialects, accents, and how positively they all tend to speak on their lives, no matter the hardships. thank you for creating this channel and the content that you continuously pump out. Definitely one of my favorite channels and one of the most inspiring, interesting, and intriguing channels i've ever found. thank you for doing what you do!
I love the Appalachian accent. I would love to hear her read my favorite book.
I love how you bring attention to these people! Thank you
I like this girl! She's direct, honest and to the point.
The line of questioning is a bit repetitive.
It would be interesting to hear her opinion on other parts of the country and world, politics, what a typical day is like, etc.
It isn’t about that. For most of these people, this is there one and only chance to tell their story and their story alone. Plus, with today’s climate, I understand him not getting political. I don’t imagine her typical day being very colorful either.
He isn’t the best person to interview these people. Something about him is kinda off putting.
I’m from Texas and have had people make fun of my accent. I love to hear a Southern accent and especially an Appalachian accent. Kathleen is very sweet. I hope he does a follow up about her.
@@gheester60 Agreed, he keeps implying to her that her life has turned out badly when she actually seems quite happy and seems more well adjusted than a lot of people who are rich and fake.
I like hearing how these folk answer the same questions and i find each one unique and interesting.
He asked her if she’s happy 3 times. Like he couldn’t understand how she could be, living there.
She can be easily envied for having her own home, land, water, peace in nature, while Tons of people are trying to go off grid and escape the mayhem of action in the world out there. True gratitude there!
@Cinamingrl did you not see the porch she sat on? Rotting out with no money to fix it. Her teeth are probably in the same condition 🥺 You can't even imagine that kind of poverty, how dare you talk about how she doesn't know how lucky she is. Did you see the look on her face when she talked at the end of winter coming? That's the look of a mother who is afraid. Lucky my ass 😠
I like how she talks. People can be so cruel... I like that she just tells it like it is with no filter, and when she answers questions, she is short and concise...
So much cooler when you go into their environment!!! Would love to see this more often. I know uve done it a few times before and those are always my fav interviews💙💚💜✌
The guy who is interviewing projects the idea that she is unfortunate and was shocked that she went to college for a year. She seems really happy, she's on meds and people watch out for her. Nothing wrong with her or her situation. That guy is a jerk.
He is often
I wrote something similar above - I find the interviewer's interview strategy/tactics really problematic and even cringe-y. He's trying to get her to talk about normal life stuff so her natural speech comes out, but he asks such deeply personal questions RIGHT off the bat, and on FILM on top of that, and it ends up feeling more like an interrogation and less like a conversation. The first thing you learn in any documentary class is that your goal should be to become a part of the community youre documenting, if you can at all (while being aware that you'll never be FROM there), so that you don't end up with this 'look at the zoo animals' depiction. This is really....yikes.
He didnt seemed shocked at all, he made it seem that it was good she went to college, it’s very hard out there to get money for that and technology to help with school work when your parents can’t, he’s interviewed all kinds of people from rapist pedos prostitutes and inbreds. He raised money for some too. He isn’t trying to make fun of anyone or use the interviews for that reason. It’s to educate people and get the darker side of things that a lot of people would judge them without being educated on why. He’s a good guy.
I'm from Wellington, New Zealand.. I absolutely love her accent... Such interesting appalachian stories from that side of the world...all the best to Samantha xox
I could listen to her all day. She sounds beautiful. I don't blame her anxiety with her seizure disorder. Keep writing!
I love how she speaks. I have friends that talk just like her and I makes me smile. I miss because she passed away two years ago.
Love that little dog. God bless these folks. The simple life preserves health and sanity
Fascinating. She’s so innocent. We are looking a purity.
Foolishness...what's pure? The poverty?
I have a lot of respect for this woman; I think she was very dignified during the questioning.
She seems like a very polite personality. I'm always amazed by the depth of human suffering, and I hope she finds some relief in her life.
Thank you for not idealizing her miserable existence. She seems very unhappy, unaware of her unhappiness and ignorance, and yet people keep say how beautiful it is that she's living this life.
I live in Indiana and MANY people here talk with a Southern accent or a "Hoosier accent," and have no reason to speak ill of anybody's accents. I'm so sorry you were made fun of. People can be really mean especially if they aren't happy with themselves.
You are an amazing young lady and deserve happiness. Just be who you are. 💯 I wish more people were as sweet as you are!!! 😊⛰️💕
My great aunt was fro. Kentucky and she had a lil accent...moved to Los Angeles and I grew up with her she kept the whole family together like glue. Her cooking was the best and her heart was so big. And that house they lived in sold for almost a million dollars when she passed away. She didn’t graduate high school but she was SMART. And thrifty too. This lady seems sweet and perfectly normal.
I was born in Kentucky and lived in the area my entire life. I currently live in South America, and I can say that the poverty and lack of opportunities is comparable. God save us!
