1973 Peavey Classic 50-Watt 410 Tube Hybrid Combo DEMO

- Not to be confused with the later "Classic 50" tweed 410 amps, which had El84 power tubes and tube preamps, this is a vintage 1973 Peavey hybrid tube amp. The preamp is solid state and the power section is tube and features two 6L6GC. It has four 10" Eminence AlNiCo speakers, which sound totally badass. The speakers alone are worth the price of admission on these, even if you just use it as a 410 cab! As it stands, the Peavey Classic is capable of some really nice and interesting tones, both of the clean and fuzz variety when cranked. The overdrive is perfect for Doom Metal or Sludge Metal. Almost has an ultra compressed Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face quality to it.

I'm the guy that bought this from The Guitologist, and I have to say it's still an amazing amp, 7 years later!
That’s awesome!
That Gator Country TONE!!!! Now you're Flirtin' with Disaster!!!!
Just found this video. My grandparents gifted me one of these and I still have it. It was purchased in 67 or 68 and still works. The overdrive is different but usable. Virtually indestructible. Peavy's don't get a lot of love but they are solid and you can get them on the cheap. I get lots of positive comments when played with my D16H and LR Baggs anthem.
Old indestructable Peaveys ....where would the guitar player on a budget be without them ?
the 2nd guitarist in my first R&R band had a Classic 2x12 from this era. the sound was killer. He'd crank it & we called the sound 'a blizzard of nails'
Love the “Rock Bottom” riffage! 🤘
I have the 1974 4x10 (4A- Serial #) and bought mine back in 76 when i was 14. I can't believe what I put this thing through especially the 1st 20 years I had it. Sure glad its a USA product so it was built to last for sure. It still cranks and has the original speakers... I believe they are scorpions but not 4 sure ( I have 2 sets of #'s on my speakers all the same 101610C 67 7403) Everything is gr8 on my amp but the front cloth needs to be cleaned badly from a drink spill from way back when. When I bought this amp it came with a Vox 2 button switch which is old a heck too and also still works. I can get very nice clean and some great distortion with my old Boss Heavy metal hm-2..also got a FX58.... This amp has given me 50 years of fun & i used to carry it everywhere... just loved carrying the heavy mutha around I guess... haha I used to get some radio stations on it back in the 70's with it lol
Love it! I have the same amp in the tweed color. Bought it new way back in high school and never let it go. Definitely a keeper. Great review on the amp by the way and enjoyed your playing. Interesting to hear how it sounds with a SG. I have a Telecaster and the bright channel is a bit too bright sometimes but on the SG it souns a bit more balanced.
+Scott Harvath Yeah, I can see where it might be too bright with single coils.
This goes to show that these amps have an awesome, and unique sound, even for the drive sound. It helps having someone play them who has good skill too!
Sounds like all kind of good bluesyness!
Damn son....pick that thing......Sounds great......My first big amp was a 4x12 Peavey Cab ....Peavey Musician head on top...1973 ...She was a monster...I wish I still had it.....
@xdeadmeatx yes,thats us....haha
I had one of these i used in the road back in the early 80s and it sounded great because of the four Tens
I have a 2x12 version of one of these. bought it back in 8rh grade, was my first "real" amp. I still have it, and love the cleans. I have one of the later ones with phaser instead of tremolo.
How's the phaser sound?
The Guitologist interesting to say the least haha. I don't use all the often since the button for it on the foot switch broke. you can get some really weird outer space type sounds if you crank both Knobs all the way up haha.
mine appears to be either a 1980 or 83 looking at the speaker codes (obviously one has been replaced at some point).
@@TheGuitologist I haven't been able to hear much of a difference in the 2x12 vt classic I had and the 4x10 classic in the video. I'd bet that amp moves some air tho.
Jacob Dolinger I have the tremelo version
Boy you can really play that thang!
Amazing sound
Sounds good Brad
My dad handed one of these down to me while I was in high school, great clean tones but not a huge fan of the overdriven tones.
I usually run a Mesa Studio preamp into its power amp and it sounds glorious together.
+Mykal Anstrom The overdrive has its followers among those into a certain kind of metal. It's got a distinctive kind of brittle, farty overdrive tone. One thing I'll say about it, it's a hard to replicate tone.
+The Guitologist True, I can see where folks can definitely use the sound. It's certainly a unique amp, but for me I love the clean tone for running pedals and my preamp through. The phaser effect on mine is a bit odd but no less fun to play with.
Ran it linked up a Rivera 0-212 a few times and the sound was absolutely killer. Kept the signature open back tone from the built-in 410 but the ported 2x12 cabinet added a power to the bass that was like being drop kicked in the chest. Worked extremely well for metal with that Mesa providing the preamp sound.
The Peavey Classic Power Amp series is actually recommend quite often to pair up with that pre so it makes sense to me why that amp would pair well too.
It's very "Wolfmother" ish
an actually nice looking amp as well as sounding compared to alot of the other older peavey amps
Love those old hybrid Peavey amps. Heavy as hell but I find them for around $100 in perfect working order sometimes with footswitches! I can't understand why there is so much hate for these?
It's easy to hate what you don't know
Great Blues Doctor!
People would be surprised at how many musicians used peavey. 38 special was all peavey. The beastie boys used the cabinets. van Halen. Etc etc
That reverb is killer.
Rock out dude, Your Jamming ! ! ! !
This amp sounds great for just playing chords and rhythm
I’m a bass player who’s looking for a Fender VI and baritone amp. Tried one of these out at GC with a baritone and it was absolutely killer.
I want this specific one cuz it has tremolo and better reverb ever
Revisiting this as I'm looking for one of these.
HOW MANY DO YOU WANT? I HAVE (3)!!!!!! TWO 'VTX', AND ONE STANDARD CLASSIC! (2) OF THE 212s, AND (1) 410. COME AND GET 'EM! WE'RE HERE IN NASHVEGAS!
Pablo Picasso - you still got the standard classic? 410? Cheers
Love your playing
Just picked up the 212 version of this guy and the VT 16O Mace earlier this month for a steal down in san leandro.
Nice! These are fun amps. Love the crappy, fizzy drive these have. It’s got its own character, and the cleans are fantastic!
What year is your SG?
Good stuff Man!
I’ve only seen 73 versions that don’t have the brushed aluminum trim on the side. Do you know if this is the only without it? Personally I think they better without it. Great video! Thanks!
Was just gifted one of these (tweed case) in non-working condition. Any suggestions where to find a schematic and/or how the foot pedal was configured? Thanks.
Had the MX series hybrid. Weighed a metric ton and the overdrive was horrendous!
Lovely stuff. Can you tell me if they are squareback eminence 10 inch speakers? Or alnico horseshoe type? Thanks
Hey ..i like all you Videos !!!! And it´s funny, wen you Play and you feet move it :-)Please more from you...you fan from Germany /Colonge ..Max
How did you figure out the year on your Peavey Classic. I have the same Classic in a 4x10 and would like to figure it out.
I have a 73' 410. Its on one of the corners of the circuit board inside the amp,(i forget which corner, or of its on the top or bottom of the board, but its on the circuit board!)
Want to have some fun with this amp use a active guitar eq pedal through the distortion channel. Will open it up while boosting the right frequencies.
it has a zz top tone right on the mark.
Any Ideas on the cost of an amp like this one?? Can't find them anywhere
Maybe a dumb question, but how does someone date one of these old Peaveys? I have an old 320T Mace combo I would like to put a date to. Is it on the chassis somewhere? Thanks in advance..
+R. Lee Craine The easiest way is speaker codes. Here's a good site on how to read speaker codes. The first two or three numbers indicate the manufacturer of the speakers. The next one or two numbers gives you the last digit or last two digits of the year. Then the last two digits give you the number of the week of that year.
So, an example code might be 677412.
In this example "67" means speaker was made by Eminence.
"74" means 1974 (the year).
"12" means 12th week of 1974.

Thank you, I'll definitely check that out, I'll try that out on my sunn 4x12 cab as well..
What a sweet amp! This isn't the VT 212 classic peavey amp is it?
No. Different amp from what I understand.
I owned the 2x12 for awhile, but I have to say, I think for whatever reason that the 4x10 cab better suits the overall sonic-vibe this thing puts out. It seems to sweeten up the compressed, "fuzz-face" type overdrive. Sounds less shrill than the 2x12. I think I needa get my hands on one!
I had a VTX 2x12 that was a relative. Same hybrid design. I regret selling it, but times are tough and what can you do. ;)
I hear ya. The good news is it's a vintage Peavey. They sold a million of them and they last forever, so there's still a million out there if you look for one.
Good point. Thanks for all the replies. Your channel is a good one. One thing I love is when you demo an amp, the tone really dictates the stuff you play and the feel, etc. You really have an ear for tone and how to use it. Cheers! If I ever get down that way, (I'm in central Ohio), I'll have you fix my Vox. ;)
You're too kind. But yes, I do try to play to the equipment. It's very easy to fall into a trap of trying to play the same way you always play regardless of what tools you're using, but that's a very good way to get bad tone, even with a rig that should sound great. That's why you always get these sob stories of "the one that got away". A younger guitarist didn't know yet how to best dial in his playing and his tone with some vintage gem and he ended up selling it before having a chance to really fall in love, then he later regrets it.
The Guitologist * You just describe my exact experience with this amp and knowing what I now know about year or two later I wish I never got rid of it, especially since those speakers are so Good and the tremolo too along with the great tone on the clean channel it's just I wish I NEVER got rid of it 😒 but they are still cheap so one can be had for very little money 😉 Thanks again for making these videos, I dig watching you get cool shit out of dumpsters and all the old amps that you are always tinkering with so thanks again and keep up the GREAT QUALITY CONTENT.
Very rare
Do you still have it or sold it?
Sonny Fales I just picked one up today and came here to look up some information on it. Apparently mine is probably a late 70s according to the speaker date. Looking forward to cleaning it up and testing it out.
trem mole o.
Didn’t Music Man make an amp similar with a SS preamp and tube power amp?
Yes. MM amps were hybrids.
Joan Jett still uses a MM
not all of them but in the eighties MM did, I owned and played one. Eric Clapton used these amps on a couple of records in the eighties.
there is one on the cover of his 'Backless' LP
Nicholas Totoro yes
peavey amplifiers sounded good until the 80s when them and everyone else was on a solid state kick.thank goodness they went back to vintage.
Jeff Gerek - The Peavey amp in the video has a completely Solid State preamp and is from 1973
Peavey Bandits with the Sheffields are solid state and they are bad ass amps
Nothing wrong with solid state
@@neilpatrickhairless i have the silver stripe bandit and love it
Ahh the JJ Cale clean sound.
snag em while u can they are all Goin to be made in Japan or China from now on
Clinton Miller what an idiot
@@josephrobertson3050 -Japan makes better shit than we do.
Why dont you use a proper mic?
It's horrible
