I found the comment about driving 3 hours for a few tree pictures very interesting because I used your original statement to support my decision to drive to a city an hour away to take a few photos of the skyline. In other words your video inspired me and I enjoyed the entire excursion. Why not? I have a life, but part of it is to find time to pursue beauty. Thanks!

Since discovering your channel earlier this year. Your philosophies and mentality have helped me greatly in my personal life as well as my photography. Once being someone who constantly lived in a state of depression, you have helped me get out of that head space and learn to enjoy the areas around me. I've started to travel to cities less and mountains more. Being outside, away from everything, it really helps me put a lot of things into perspective. As well as helping keep my head on straight. Thank you for always being you, Thomas. I greatly appreciate your content and your attitude. Take care!

I live in Arizona (USA) I drive 2-5 hours every weekend to photograph trees.. sometimes just rocks... I mean, sometimes the same rocks even. Just the act of getting up and out gets your creative juices flowing. It scratches that itch, you know the one. I dont see any problem with getting up and out. 3 hour drive?! why the hell not? Go for a 6 hour drive if you feel like it.
Also: what may seem pedestrian to you is exotic to others. I live in Arizona (Desert) and misty trees are VERY alien and beautiful to me.
Anything you think of as normal and boring can be considered exotic to many many other people.

Brilliant comment. I live in Arctic Norway, but are somewhat well travelled in Arizona, photograping desert landscapes is like another world to me. Which I would guess northern lights, snow covered trees and icey lakes are to you.

This is a very important video for people practicing photography. Just because you don't see a composition one day, it's smart to return another day. Photography can be like finding a needle in a heystack. The compositions are there, just keep looking.

True. Photography is not just pressing a shutter 100x times; it is a journey to take one but good. I often go to nearby park whereas sb might wonder I photographed everything there. Eh... but this everything differs from day to day and that is fantastic....

Absolutely agree about the three-hour Drive comment. Photography is about capturing a moment in time to look back on. To sit down years from now with my kids and say I was there at that moment in time to capture that image. It creates conversations and brings back memories and that's what it's all about.

Hi Tom-I enjoyed this, a quintessential Thomas Heaton video. I watch all your videos, but I don't always reply because sometimes I think whatever I say will be lost in the hundreds, sometimes thousands of comments you receive. However, I appreciate every one of them and I always take something good away from each. Your down-to-earth sincerity about landscape photography, its highs and lows and its essential value is summed up in this video. It is not how many great images you get, if any, it is just being out, in natural surroundings, enjoying the process. Many thanks, my friend. Bob

Love that area and for me the best local place for landscape photography . Only an hour and a half away from where I live in the midlands. Great to see your professional eye casting over this great area.

That chaps comment, some people just don't get it. Can't beat a little adventure, a roadtrip listening to some tunes or a good audiobook/podcast with a coffee. Finding somewhere new or quiet and just taking it all in, feeling privileged to have somewhere to yourself and to be present in the moment seeing something that others aren't. If you come back with an image then great, a portfolio image then it's a bonus. We don't get that long on this earth so we need to take every opportunity to spend time doing something we love. I think the image works, first look it pulled me in, I think the cloud shape is strong enough to hold it together but definitely one to go back to over the seasons. Really enjoying these latest videos Tom, I watched some of your early stuff and it has that same feel. Cheers, Paul

Adventure. My father was a fisherman, he would get up at 5.00am and drive for a couple of hours and sit on a riverbank all day in all sorts of weather and then drive home again. His attitude to this was "If I catch any fish it`s a bonus" which I took to mean that "it`s the adventure that is the fun and anything else just improves the day". I now have the same attitude to photography just the same as you do and I wouldn`t have it any other way. Keep up the good work.

You are so right about spending the time out rather and it being interesting. I spent last weekend in the desert of Abu Dhabi's Eastern Region, it was not so much the photographing the dunes at sunrise but the fact that just being out there and spending 4 hours off road with the added bonus of penetrating deep into the dunes for photography.

Back to basics, now this is how I like to see you do vlogs, like back when you started. simple B roll, good explanations, and the way you showed that not every outing is successful, although it was maybe not a keeper, it was as good a photograph as you were going to get with the light and composition. Great stuff Tom

I love the bit where you acknowledge you aren't that happy with your image, but kinda happy with the trip. Sure you drove a while (although I guess you created content for your channel regardless, so it creates income and fuel is a business expense etc), but I feel the same most times I head out. I am rarely very happy with my photos nowadays, often getting pictures that are 'okay', rather than good on reflection. However, not once ever have I regretted going out to take photos.

Thomas, I love your videos. I love the fact, that you don’t romanticize photography. It is a hard work, loads of money and hours of time spent and quite often with no visible result other than the joy of the journey. It is always good to get a little kick of “hey, you are not alone in it. We all sometimes end up frantically running around trying to find a photo and yet not being able to create a masterpiece.”
I am a flight attendant and most of the time I can only work with given time in a given location. Take it or leave it. I very often drive more than 3-4 hours to spots I wish to capture and most of the time, I feel under great pressure. I have never been to those places, I have never driven those roads and I am there only exactly when I am there. Cannot really ask for more, wait for better light or scout the location. I love those trips no matter what and I love, that my passion makes me complete a 17 hours flight and still sit in the car for 4,5h hours driving hundreds of kilometers just to see something gorgeous and hopefully even capture the feeling, I get. But... due to what I described eariler, I very often fail and come back with nothing useful. And sometimes it just makes me question myself, whether I am good enough and whether it is even worth it.
I can absolutely relate to every feeling you have on trips and days like this one. I hate the frantic moments, I hate the missed shots, but I love the experience and the journey itself. And ... it is nice to see, that I am not alone. That even somebody, who I consider really masterful in his field, goes through the same down lows I do, because that means, that maybe even I can one day capture something good, because I am willing to go through all the work behind.
Thank you for such videos. It feels like a tap on the back and saying “I understand. You will get there.” It is a boost.

For me, I liked the way the photo magically draws your eye the reflection in the water and I would get lost there lingering in that pool of thought. I really liked it.

Talking about skies lighting up. Yesterday it happened, I when for a run in the mountains surrounding the city, 8k in. I had to stop to take a dump. I had the perfect vantage point to see an amazing sunset. Wonderful.

I drove 4 hours total one day this year for a 40 minute adventure. It ended up being my most favorite shot I have ever taken!! Completely worth it!!

...I agree with some of the others comments, it is good to simply get out there & get some shots, as in the good, the bad & the ugly. I see you had your remote switch attached once again, that is a good thing. Never been particularly fond of the delay timer on any of my Canons. I would think in all eventualities you will step up to the plate, " bite the bullet " & get yourself a really nice set of legs. What prompted me to make this comment, with all due respect, was those " toothpicks " on the 4th ext. of the tripod perched on that steep ledge... I love the campervan btw!
    Cheers,
    Bill... :-)

Great video as usual Thomas. Inspiring to make the decision to get out there on an adventure. Also nice to see the images don't always turn out as expected, but still enjoy the journey that photography takes us on.

Suset photography can be ruined in many ways, but it's still beautiful because it turns out different every time, I always look at it from this perspective

I think you are right about the photo. There are a lot of great leading lines, but not really anything where they are leading to 😊

Thomas, your love for adventure is truly unprecedented and you are an inspiration that more should follow. Photography just seems like a byproduct of your adventures but I feel that is what helps you stand apart from others. You go out for the story and return with the image. This morning I drove two hours to a beautiful lake with cliffs facing the east so I could capture a beautiful sunrise. During the night however the winds picked up clearing out the clouds and then cheating me of my photograph. Slightly frustrated feeling I then recalled your episodes when you traveled to Utah and encountered similar weather. I realized I was trying force something that wasn't there. I put down my camera and sipped some coffee and enjoyed being surrounded by silence.

Well photography wouldn’t hold such allure if we got what we wanted every time. Still a lovely video though, and I can totally see the potential and why you chose that composition. Looking forward to the iminent rise next week! Take care!

6:57 that looks like the Bole Hills quarry near Surprise View. The stone from there was used to build the Derwent and Ladybower dams. Walking around you can still see the track beds for the railway as well as the base of the winch house at the top of Padley Incline.

Drove all the way to the Peak District to photograph more trees, that's interesting.... And it's quite wonderful, too, because you show the WHY of doing it, not just the almighty WHAT. Sometimes (okay, most times), the best part of being a photographer comes in the trying. Bravo, TH.
