    I had wondered where your video was Tom. Really enjoyed this. Gear doesn’t matter but passion does and you have it in bucket loads! Here is to 2019 👍

    • @Bucko2614
      @Bucko2614 Před 5 lety +3

      Absolutely. We all get caught up in GAS now and then, that little red devil on your shoulder whispering "if only I had a newer ...". Thomas fell into that trap, and by sharing his life on CZcams we all got to see and comment on it. I was frustrated when he made the first "I'm switching" video because he never gave a proper reason for the switch. Was he not getting the shot because of his current gear or was it just GAS? Glad he has recovered and back on track doing what he loves. Wishing Thomas and you all the best for 2019. Keep up the good work.

      I think, it's a trend for people to say that gear doesnt matter. But it does. Do not shy away from saying gear matters. It does matter. Being obsess with gear is no good. Theres a difference in between being obsess over gear and being critical in what you are going to get. It's like saying doesnt matter which house you buy, house is a house, only who lives in the house and love is all that matter. Or doesnt matter which car you buy, as long as it drives. No it matters which car you buy. Just my two cents. I love both you guy's channel

    • @Bucko2614
      @Bucko2614 Před 5 lety +4

      @@SeanKimStyle I agree. Gear does matter in terms of getting the job done. We need a house, we need a car etc. The "problem" is that we think we need bigger houses and faster cars when we don't really need an upgrade. My issue with Thomas was that he never said why specifically his 5div or Eos wasn't good enough. Why the need for a new camera. Did he sell less prints because of it? Did he have less CZcams followers because of his gear? When and why do you decide your gear isn't good enough and you need a new camera. That is the explanation that was missing and why we all assume it was GAS. Gear to get the job done matters. Having the newest, greatest gear does not. Agree?

    Too funny mate ''I'd rather be out taking rubbish pictures''. Never a truer word was said. 95% of what we shoot is total crap and yes there is pressure to always be delivering the goods. One thing you'll always have Tom is your integrity. As long as you're happy with the content you create, that's all that matters. I was talking to Adam Gibbs about this and we both agreed that even if you don't capture a killer shot, the story of how you tried is what makes great content and people do love to see others out and about doing what they love. Inspiration is inspiration, whatever form it comes in.

    Way to go Thomas. Most of us watching cant afford the ££££ D850's, Z7, EOS R etc. Were watching because like you, we like going into the outdoors and wild places to trying and bring a little piece of the emotion we felt and saw back, to show others and remember it in years to come. Most of us with whatever photo gear we have. I get the feeling that if you strip away CZcams, the CZcams followers, guided workshops and if it wasn't your job, you would still be going into the outdoors and taking landscape photos. Your passion will guide you in 2019. Happy New Year.

    It's almost 2021. I just bought my first decent camera and after exhausting quite a few nerdy gear-related videos I've stumbled upon your channel. I sometimes fall into these niche YT rabbit holes that help me zone out, be at peace, and learn about my new hobbies. E.g. ambient guitar pedals, primitive technology, video game play-throughs, etc... I'm so happy you do what you do, and hope that if you ever feel discouraged again, know that these videos will live on forever and you never know what joy you will bring to the younger generations of curious and contemplative artists. - Sincerely, your new fan from Florida, Austin.

    3 minutes in and I was like ready to support your attempts to review cameras because once in a while we all need some honest opinions... but then, I've been feeling it too as a multiple year watcher of your channel... the last several I found myself feeling like you were struggling for content and yes even questioning if I was going to continue to watch twice a week. So your feelings are true about the spirit of this channel. Here's what I get most from your channel in order of importance to me: 1) See what you see. I fancy myself a landscape photographer and I've always thought I had a pretty good eye, but then to see how you see compositions and can pull amazing shots out of nothingness is why I tune it to learn. 2) Your honest, low key, guy next door, zero judgement character... its like we could have been friends our whole life (I have a few years on you though). 3) your settings and methods, for example focus stacking I learned first from you. I'm alway curious, and I wish you did it more often, when you discuss your camera settings for each shot. THESE do so much better when you're in love and passionate about them, so thank you for coming back home. I will continue to watch twice a week :-)

Only a few of your 314.000 subscribers comment and usually the one screaming the loudest haven't done anything in life except knocking down others. I stumbled across your videos when looking for inspiration and something to fill lonely hours spent on the sofa convalescing...... The camera was put in a cupboard. I became a sofa surfer, hooked on your videos and binged. Admired your honesty and your gentle humour and your passion. It gave me the chance to see places I might never get the chance to visit and learn how you create your beautiful images - the way you compose an image and how you are prepared to get soaked by waves, rain and rivers. You have inspired me and made me determined in 2019 to get out there and try landscape photography. You have nailed the truth Tom. Its not all about the perfect image. I took 2 years and 18 days to get a shot of a kingfisher. I practised on Red Arrows along the way. But what it taught me is that it is the journey and the passion for doing the thing you love. Its the friendship and companionship of others who make photography so rewarding. Its being one with nature and celebrating the seasons and the storms. The image is part of the journey but its the little bits along the way, from getting wet, to cursing when you have forgotten the spare battery and the person in the hide who helps with settings, that coalesce into the reward and joy of the final image. Keep doing what you do so well. Inspire, encourage and help us to become better photographers as we share your journey and you become part of ours. You got me through some dark, lonely months and now I can't wait to get out there. Thank you and I wish you, your camera and van many adventures in 2019.

    Thomas, you are not alone. I've been a photojournalist and a nature photographer off and on for forty years and the one question guaranteed to drive me nuts is "What camera did you use to take that picture." First off I don't take pictures I make them. Second off as you often point out any decent camera is fine as long as you actually know how to use it. And finally the camera does not deserve the credit for a good nature/landscape photo God does...and I might deserve a pat on the back from time to time as well. Lastly, I make part of my living running charter boat trips in Acadia National Park here along the Coast of Maine and I get a lot of photographers on board. If I've said it once I've said it 1,000 times, setting out on a photo trip always expecting to get great photos is a prescription for disaster. Enjoy the total experience and if some great photos result so much the better!

Personally I had no problem with the gear talk, I found it interesting. At the end of the day it’s your channel and you should put out the content that makes you happy. If I didn’t like your videos I’d just unsubscribe, it’s that simple, but unfortunately we live in a world that people prefer to have a go, makes them feel better about themselves I guess. keep up the great work. The reason i hate most gear blogs, is that most assume your budget is massive, and that if you dont have the most expensive gear, your photo's will be crap. Most of my photography is of motorbike races, and the best photo i have taken , was taken on a fuji finepix bridge camera, and not with my d3200

    Fantastic video Thomas. This is why I subscribed to your channel. I'm not a pro photographer, just a passionate hobbyist. I'm sixty years old and I've been hiking, camping and backpacking for fifty years. Started digital photography about ten years ago with a Canon 60D. Three months ago I finally updated to full frame with the 5D mk4. Sure the upgrade was visible in the images, but it's those quiet solo walks at the first light of dawn that makes photography so much more than just a hobby. Your video today, like the ones used to do before the gear nonsense, are what reinforce my personal passion and joy from this art form. The way you pieced together the scenes in the video made feel like I was there with you. And living in the hot dry desert of Southern California, I could almost feel the cool air. The overcast sky, the green trees and colorful hillsides seem so different than my local mountains and desert. But watching your appreciation of the land of your home has convinced me to get out tomorrow and enjoy the second day of the new year in my beautiful desert of Joshua Tree National Park. Thanks for the inspiration.

Please, give us always a Photo in each video even if you don’t like the results, some of us hope always to see the result of each video in a photo! I wouldn't be too hard on yourself Thomas, we're on this journey with you. It's a temporary change of direction due to the fact you've been considering trying to gain better IQ for you landscape images which naturally involves looking at the market for alternatives. I think most are interested in your views on the gear itself as a 'proper' photographer who makes images that we all get to see. I'm sure we all know once you've made your decision to upgrade or not......the channel will be back on the usual track of the outdoors and landscape photography. Like I say, its a long journey we're on with you week by week and your views in the real world with gear does matter too. Anyway....looking forward to seeing the channel getting back on track....which it naturally will, I've no doubt....as we all know you're a photographer, NOT gear reviewer. The most successful photographs I’ve taken over the last 20 years have been absolute accidents when I’ve just been out for a walk. Relaxed in my expeditions and vision regardless of the conditions. Where your channel shines Tom is your skill in documenting so well your experience and adventures outside. I’ll go as far as to say the quality of photograph you capture is irrelevant. What you’ve been doing is documenting your journey and inspiring others. People should appreciate regardless of ability every time you pick up a camera doesn’t guarantee an amazing photograph. That is the challenge, trying to see and put together an image you are happy with. The more you practise the better you see. You document that challenge so well and as a result you have such a loyal and supportive following. The journey is full of ups and downs and the biggest challenge we face is one within ourselves. You have quite a few people behind you wishing you success and positivity in your adventures. Supporting you along the life long journey of landscape photography. Keep doing what you love, that’s success.

      One more, "Well said!" It's unfortunate that the more successful people are on CZcams, the more pressure they put on themselves to keep creating content. With everything in life there is a balance and even if you are making decent money from CZcams there is a point when life can become unbalanced if you try too hard to create content. And that isn't healthy. Gear does matter to an extent. You couldn't create the images you create now with the first digital camera I bought in 2000, but again it's a case of balance. Most modern cameras are perfectly capable of great results and there is no need for anyone to be overly obsessive about gear. You are right to listen to your gut, your instincts. Even if 'logic' tells you otherwise, it is your instincts that will tell you if you are doing the right thing or not. You've done that and you've now made the appropriate changes for 2019. Good move!

I'm so happy you have "gone back" to find your true place and to what matters: making compelling, engaging, and beguiling _photographs._ I was also out yesterday photographing the sunset over San Francisco from Treasure Island with two friends. It was a beautiful evening, we actually had clouds, so we had lovely color. We were shooting with Canon, Nikon and Fujifilm, but there was virtually no discussion about what camera anyone was using; it was just about three friends being out together and photographing a beautiful evening. I didn't come away with my best-ever San Francisco from Treasure Island sunset shot, that's fine, but...it was just great being out shooting on a beautiful evening with friends. You got me into Landscape photography and it was your out in the field enthusiasm that did it. Now I know you are becoming much more than just a CZcams Vlogger. If they didn't like the channel, they would stop watching. So what, others would find you. I don't watch you to see you make the perfect image- all of your images are better than mine. I love to walk with you on your travels and think about what you are explaining about the conditions. I love to hear you complain about the weather (and I'm sometimes glad I'm not standing there). In short- I personally don't care about the content (reviews of cameras or gear) as long as you are using the gear to take pictures. As both a consumer and producer here on CZcams I can affirm that there is a difference in mindset between the two. When it comes to Thomas channel I want to, as you said, follow him on his adventures and the final result of a image is not what I really care about. The video is the product I care about :P but if I think about the creation of a video for my own channel I don't really want to release a video which results in a bad photo. When creating I think we tend to only want to show our best work, but the consumer doesn't really care that much about perfection and they understand that not every video can include perfect conditions with an amazing photo at the end. But as a creator that is kinda what we try and hope to achieve.

My images are much more enjoyable to me, and shooting for myself, that’s really all that matters. Another viewer liking & even buying my work is an added bonus. A Big Thank You! A belated Happy New Year!

    Think you’ve hit the nail on the head, if you post content that you’re truly excited to make, that always comes through in your videos. Your excitement and passion makes us feel the same and that’s what we tune in to see

    I subscribed because of your passion for landscape photography, and an amazing ability of telling the story. Some of my favourite vlogs were those that you came away with little. Your personality is what I feel is your biggest differentiator.
    Interestingly you like taking minimalist photos that are enriched with emotions, your commentary is less verbose than other photographers but extremely high in “being there with you” hooks, and your soundtracks are subtly moody. I think that these combinations is the magic formula that has me drawn to your videos.
    I do not mind you doing different style of videos, but I’ll be honest and admit what keeps me coming back for more are your outdoor ventures... even if to just take a walk.
    Finally, if we do not try something different, we reduce our opportunity to learn. So, on that note, what learnings have you taken from this experience? Ps. I actually liked how you did intertwine observations about your trial camera into your outdoor landscape videos.
    Still a big fan!

    I look at your videos for the beauty of the photos you take and all the efforts you put into it in all weather conditions and enjoy the different places and countries you go to.

    There are gear review channels ad nauseam and definitely not why I subscribed to your channel over a year ago. Just wanted to "thumbsup" your focusing back on what is important. Absolutely phenomenal. Absolutely fantastic. Absolutely gorgeous.

    Hi Tom, I did not read the comments before (rarely do) that led to this video. I just think that there is nothing wrong with occasionally giving a very subjective view on the gear you use or contemplate to use. You are an accomplished landscape photographer and I believe many who are just getting started love to get a bit of your insight. I really enjoy your videos for the sake of getting some inspiration on the what and how. Keep it up. All the best for 2019!

    7:40 I think only few can appreciate this kind of b-roll. Imagine the effort it takes for this b-roll shot. Damn!
