- Earlier this week, Consequence of Sound released a review of the new Tyler, the Creator album that read less like a critique of the album's musical content, and more like an attack on the artist's character/identity. While this might be the most egregious instance of vendetta journalism I've seen this year in the music world, the problem is much larger than this one article.

What's funny is that accusing a recently-outed gay celebrity of faking it for attention is actually homophobic as fuck.

A lot of Tyler fans I know are super attached to his less matured angsty music from 2011. They definitely aren't ashamed of listening to his old music. I don't really think theres any of his music to be ashamed of anyway.

So, I tweeted at the lady that wrote the article that the review was really bad, completely lacked objectivity, she barely discussed the actual music, and that she had a pre-conceived notion of Tyler and used the "review" to vent against Tyler. Then she blocked me. 😂😂😂 glad to see criticism is a one-way street.

Reviewing art dishonestly as a means of tearing down an artist you disagree with is like becoming a chef so you can spit in the food of people you dislike. It's shady, it's cowardly, and it's degrading to yourself and your profession.
It's not like the whole gay thing was a big theme in the album anyway. Just a whole bunch of clickbaity articles with barely anything to do with the album.
Carly Weezy Vince Staples said it best, how many people are actually talking about the music? If Tyler goes for interviews it might only be one or two where they actually ask him about his album, and not about being gay or his personal life. It's fucked up.
Eh I disagree about the theme, it's a pretty significant part of the album's narrative that comes up in one form or another in more than half of the tracks. It's one interlocking piece in a much larger picture and there are lots of different themes going on, but denying that it's a pretty significant part of what the album is trying to say is silly.
That being said though, the media coverage and clickbait articles about it have been garbage and it's definitely eclipsed the music itself in a lot of instances. Journalism is seriously in a really bad spot right now.

The idea of reviewing a piece of art is to review the actual art itself. No one asked for a human review of Tyler the creator. She can't just say the album is bad because she doesn't like him. That's like saying UPS is bad because they delivered a movie you don't like that you ordered.

I just want a regular review of SFFB, I feel like your holding out to see what other people think. Btw I think your great, it's the only reason I want a review from you.
I think this is why you have such a large audience and people appreciate your reviews. You give objective opinions about the music, which undoubtedly will include your own taste, but you don't come at it from any social or personal angle. Click bait-y articles do get views, but there is little substance and it is mostly a flash in the pan. There is so much of that garbage it's hard to differentiate any of it.
**I also think journalists are viewing their work the way they view modern art: as a platform to upend your sensibilities and influence society's behavior. Not everything needs to send a message and some things should stay on your tumblr page.

This is a lot of the reason why I've become fairly dismissive towards popular music writing in general. I can't get through an entire Pitchfork review without getting a scent of some agenda they're trying to push in the sphere of the music world. To give a pretty benign but annoying example, remember the Crying record Beyond the Fleeting Gales? Well Pitchfork gave the record a 7.1, which off the cuff I don't disagree with too heavily, since that project has it's own share of flaws, but for god's sake they barely even talk about the music. It's a neat little power-pop album with very virtuoso instrumentation and killer songwriting, influenced heavily by j-pop. The pitchfork review is fucking retarded. After a relatively short-winded and repetitive few paragraphs, the author basically commends how it's nice that Crying has taken the egregious hetero-masculinity out of power-pop, and replaced it with a more feminine presence. They barely touch upon the music. It feels as though Pitchfork and similar sites are so hellbent on capturing the zeitgeist and distinguishing which records are "culturally important" that they forget some records can just be really good examples of stuff that's been done before. They're so preoccupied with being "the most trusted voice in music" that they hold this fucking god-mentality over the industry, as if they're the be-all-end-all of controlling the musical sphere. They decide what's "important". They decides what's "relevant". At the end of the day, a music can just be good. There doesn't have to been some significant attempt at pushing society forward or challenging a cultural norm for a folk album to be a great work of art. I want a music review that talks strictly about the music and nothing else. I don't care if you call it
"examining the record in a vacuum", you're a bunch of pretentious teenagers with your own cock up your ass who can't even examine a record on the merits of the music. It HAS to be about something bigger. Are there going to be examples of music that are culturally important? Yes. I just wish they would stop putting every piece of music under this filter. The writing is diluted garbage.

I think Tyler's album is so much more then his sexuality and that's not the main focus. I don't think Tyler is or was ever homophobic or ever prometes homophobia. I think everything depends on context and you can easily believe Tyler is a homophobe if you don't keep up with his music and watch his interviews. I really think that a personal opinion doesn't matter when reviewing music.

Lana Del Rey for some time (esp. 2012-2013) was target of vendetta journalism as well, and I hated that a lot because some of those writers didn't write about her music but rambled / ranted about her alleged "inauthenticty", about not being a good "role model" etc. Articles like that are just boring and useless...

Music journalism needs to be rid of the invasion of regressive leftists that push their agenda under the guise of 'music criticism'. If this CoS article was simply a thinkpiece then I wouldn't have any issue with its existence, despite it being a heaping pile of unthoughtful, ignorant and dogmatic shit, but it's the fact that this is actually a review, and a "professional" one at that, which will be considered with the same weight as reviews by unbiased writers. I know it's an old topic at this point, but just think how backwards it is that this review will be listed on Wikipedia and yet Anthony's thoughtful and honest reviews are not "professional" enough to be displayed. Honestly, I know we all like to get mad at Fantano when he disagrees with us, but thank fuck a music critic as rational as him has garnered a large platform, so that he can call this shit out.
