Where Does India's Milk Come From?

  • Where does India's milk come from? I visited a dairy farm in Haryana to find out. The farmer then surprised me with something very special!
Dairy farming in Haryana is a vital component of the state's agricultural landscape, benefiting from fertile plains and favourable climatic conditions.
The government's initiatives have encouraged farmers to adopt modern techniques, leading to increased productivity in rearing indigenous and crossbred cattle such as Murrah and Sahiwal.
The state has witnessed the establishment of dairy cooperatives and processing units, enhancing the collection, processing, and marketing of milk products.
This sector not only contributes significantly to Haryana's agrarian economy but also ensures a consistent and quality supply of dairy products to meet the demands of the growing population.
Vinod Malik's dairy farm is located in Hansi (हांसी), Haryana.
Thanks for Gaurav Malik for helping film / malikgaurav .

My grandma told me that during the time she was a teenager almost every house in their locality had owned atleast a cow or two. Because people had so much milk they used to make a variety of food items like paneer, cheese or deserts like rasmalai at their home. The dung they used to dry and use it as fuel for cooking , bathing etc. A perfect circular economy imho. But sadly this practice no longer continues to this day and less people are willing to put up with things like these

Hey Bro. At the time I didn’t have time to process it. It happened so fast. I didn’t want to disappoint him after he asked me such a big thing. So I just focused on a name for the little one, and Aastha came to my mind. Coming from New Zealand, it’s not something you’d ask someone you barely know. But I found it beautiful that they’d offer me such an important role in their family. So now I’ll be visiting Aastha often ❤️

Some facts about the general milk industry in India: Most cows used for their milk are secured with ropes through their pierced noses, often so tightly they embed in the flesh. Out of 451 dairies that FIAPO investigated across the country, almost 80 percent of them kept cows on hard floors which leads to lameness.
Because of the reluctance to kill cows, male calves of milk-producing females are often turned out onto the streets to fend for themselves. When not producing optimal milk yields, the females may be turned out, too and there are an estimated five million stray cows in India today. These poor animals eat whatever they can find, which is often garbage. Karuna Society for Animals & Nature, based in Andhra Pradesh, regularly removes up to 70 kilos of plastic rubbish from the stomachs of stray cows.
More than 5,000 shelters exist to care for stray cows. These gaushalas may mean well but in reality conditions can be even worse than on farms. For example, in Rajasthan, 250 workers at the government-run Hingonia gaushala went on strike and within two weeks, 500 cows had died from starvation. A later investigation found that between January and July 2016, 8,122 cows died at the same place due to poor conditions and upkeep. Today, the gaushala has 15,000 cows, many of whom are used for milk and therefore made to reproduce, increasing the number of cows still further.
Because slaughtering cows is illegal in many states, and disapproved of in others, unwanted cows are often just allowed to starve to death.

A really pleasant surprise that most Chai is made from Buffalo milk
I'm coming to India for the first time next month (you are one of the people that has inspired me to make my first solo backpacking trip at 59 !) But I didn't think I'd be able to have much Chai as I have a Cows milk intolerance. If its mainly Buffalo milk, that is great news for me ☺️

Thanks. Try find buffalo milk, or get more premium less-processed cow milk. I know it's possible to get "farm fresh" milk in U.S. too.

Always wanted to go the Valley of Flowers National Park in northern Uttarakhand but the journey to get there seems like an adventure on its own! It does seem like a great holiday/video idea though.

"Jai Hind" was popularised during the time of the Raj and it means something like "Long Live India". It was used by the Indian National Army which was raised by the Japanese to fight against the British from captured Indian army troops. A reminder that some Raj Indian Army troops refused to join the Indian National Army because they had survived massacres of surrendering troops who had been used as target and bayonet practice by Japanese soldiers.
