Video idea for you: design covers for books that aren't out yet (like no cover, no title on Goodreads) of popular authors. You can look at the author's past books and maybe get a sense of the cover style. Like, V. E. Schwab is coming up with the third book, Victorius in the Villains series.

I'm a bit surprised nobody even tried to take this cover in a more modern direction considering the tone in the blurb was more comedic. From the premise I would've guessed something more silly and colorful.

These covers scream “graphic design is my passion”. As a graphic designer, I’m sad.
Can you maybe design a cover for this yourself in the next video? I'm really curious to see what you would come up with. Even I have some good ideas but I cannot use photoshop haha.
I nearly included my own version in this video! I just cut it out because it was making the video too long so... you never know... maybe in the future!

I think the saddest thing is that circa 2013 these would have been actual book covers because I found some similar ones in my bookshelves 😅 the last one would definitely be out

The first cover look like a 1920s historical mystery which is inspired by the Gatsby era. I've seen some covers like that. Cover 2 is just bad. The girl on the cover and the fog 😂 the castle in the bg looks okay. The third one looks like a cheap thriller novel. The photo is okay but the font style sucks. I think the 4th one is the best out of these. The photo is cool, the text is really bad tho.

Am designing 3 book covers atm, for the first time. It's such a difficult task. There is so much to take into consideration. At least with your video am learning much more of what not to do. 😅
How did you get into book design? It's my dream job, I'd love to do it remotely
Just practice honestly! I pretty much taught myself with photoshop. A good place to start is trying to replicate existing covers so you get an insight into how they work etc,
Checking your channel to see if you have covered illustration. This was eye opening. I can make better photoshopped covers myself.

You get what you pay for. It would be interesting to see what a true designer, someone who is expert at typography and color (as these designers clearly are not!) would do with this project, but the budget would have to be greater. Reedsy vets its designers, but they charge more.

i was so hopeful considering the brief was pretty fun and its ya/na but these covers were so disappointing- also did any of them actually read the brief😭
I think the first cover would have be been great for a Dan Brown style thriller, but not so much for a YA urban fantasy 😆

Video idea: you design a book cover this is titled just Angus about a bookstore owner's and steak restaurant that opens next door enemies to lovers. And do one something youtube name inspired for other booktubers e.g. itsdivya. P.s. idk if your vegan if you are my bad. Loving the channel 🥰

I'm a book cover designer and that first cover looked like a template for some sort of corporate / business related book. That was awful. Lots of designers use stock photos in their covers. There is nothing bad about that. This person just did it poorly.
All of them did it poorly.
If you look for really bad artists on Fiverr, then you get bad covers. It takes a long time to find good artists on Fiverr. You have to look at the reviews. If you write in the briefing that the artist has creative freedom, then you shouldn't complain. You have to give more precise information about your ideas. Not all artists on Fiverr are bad.
I got custom book covers on Wattpad for FREE that were better than these.

I hate modern book covers, they all look the same. It's like 5 year old kids playing foot ball, one kicks the ball and everyone chases it. Where is the original art work? Where are the new and fresh ideas?

I have a video suggestion, Angus! I’ve seen this been made before by a few booktubers/bookstagram, and what they did was choose or let the followers choose between different country editions for different books
The reason many in my country did this was because my country (Brazil) has a very good reputation when it comes to book cover design, I personally purchase a lot of my countries editions instead of the US or UK, because they do such a good job! And the thing behind this was the fight that happens here around evelyn Hugo’s cover (which no one is satisfied by 😂)

(Note: the ones I’ve seen are a german bookstagram, he puts up polls with different covers, his page is kaispellmeier; and the booktuber, who is brazilian is Livraria em Casa, here on youtube and livrariaemcasa on Instagram; but I’ve seen many more people do it!)
