      @@derrickdaniels3955 What bothers me about Miles vs Miguel is I don’t get how so many fans and audiences for years say spider-man/characters in general needs to suffer and lose people and go through trauma and what not but now those same people (without any acknowledgment of their hypocrisy) side with Miles who is arguing against the story idea that characters need to suffer and go through loss and trauma and stories need to be dark/serious/downbeat to be interesting ..
      People are so caught up in calling out the already established inconsistencies in the canon event idea that they don’t understand or acknowledge the thematic significance of canon events as a representation of “necessary story beats (especially for Spider-Man)” that they for years want to happen all the time but can’t admit they were wrong or were challenged by that.
      The reason why I love this movie is Miles is literally against all the Spideys and tries to defy basic spider-man tropes and redefine what it means to be spider-man and since he’s the protagonist everyone sides and say Miguel is wrong (which he very well is) but don’t acknowledge how Miguel represents them

And both of them (kinda) run away from their home dimensions. In the scene where Gwen talked to her father, she said” I’m completely on my own!”, very similar to what Miguel said in the Nueva York train chase scene” I’m the one who’s holding all this together.”

    I got another fact about Miguel that was hinted at in the movie. It might also explain his character better.
    He works for Alchemax, partly like an employee and partly like a prisoner. Alchemax wanted him for his skills, but needed to make sure he’d never leave.
    So they got him addicted to a drug that only they can provide.
    I don’t know if they’ll ever include this tidbit in the next film, but I think that injection he gave himself might be the antidote he’s always working on.

He has seen the scenario play several times for real, and no rational human would want to gamble with the fate of a universe. In my opinion, neither Miguel nor Miles is wrong. It’s also only natural for Miles to want to save his father. But imagine this, what if the universe collapses if he saves him? Would Miles and Gwen feel the same about Miguel been the “bad” guy? • @baylaust
    @baylaust Před 10 měsíci +97

    While Miguel is in the wrong, I understand why he is the way he is, and why he acts the way he does. He has pinned the destruction of an entire universe squarely on his own shoulders, just because he wanted a happy life. That obviously traumatized him, and now he's desperate to make sure the same never happens to everyone else... but that also led him to believe that tragedy isn't just a component in a Spider's life, but a necessary building block that the multiverse can't exist without. From Miguel's eyes, Miles isn't trying to save his father; he's willingly putting his own universe, and the entire multiverse, at risk of complete destruction, despite knowing the risks. For Miguel, every single life in every single universe is resting on his shoulders, and the pressure is clearly too much for him to bear (which it would be too much for ANY single person to bear), but he refuses to admit it.
    But despite that, I know he's not a BAD person. The opening is proof of that. He didn't want Gwen to be a part of the Spider-Society because of their shenanigans in the first movie, but when he sees her being rejected by her father and at her lowest point, he can't help but take pity on her. There was no benefit to letting her in, he only did it because she desperately needed help.
    There's also a dark irony to the fact that despite Miguel being one of the film's main antagonists, he's just about the only person in the movie to be completely honest with Miles, while his friends are constantly lying and keeping secrets.

      This is exactly right. In many ways Miguel is the victim of his own compassion. He could've easily just locked up Miles' friends before they even knew what was happening and quarantined Miles' universe, but instead he chooses to tell Miles the truth and persuade him with his own vulnerability. He didn't have to reopen the wound of losing his daughter, but he played the clip for Miles anyway to try and empathize with him. Unfortunately it backfired since when Miles pushed back, Miguel lost control and ended up making things worse. He's a very tragic character, and I hope they give him the conclusion he deserves in Beyond.

      If he killed a child for being an Anomaly he's Pure Evil. If he killed anyone for being an Anomaly he's Pure Evil. As they're meant to exist. Nothing has broken the actual canon of the story. It's the canon of Anomalies to paradoxically break the canon. The Canon is literally inherently evil it should be broken...More people seemingly need to watch Loki and connect the dots.

      miguel has the right pieces to the puzzle but does not have all of the pieces. there are holes to his theory. the question lies in, do we risk billions of lives in the hopes of finding the truth and collecting all the pieces? or do we just not tamper with it as the risk is too much? miguel chooses to take the safe route and not tamper with canons bc the results always end in the same, a huge hole causing a universe to unravel.

      They're both anomalies/mistakes. Both of them weren't ment to be spider man, both of them damaged the multiverse and both of them believe/believed that they could bend the world to suit them. Miguel is basically a further down the line version of miles. Miguel see's miles as every mistake he ever made waiting to happen, hence why he has a personal vendetta against him. In Miguel's eyes Miles and him are the same, just a lifetime apart.

    I love your analysis because it makes so much sense the more I think about it. In the comics, it's clarified that Miguel's mother was a victim of domestic abuse, something that amplified his protective tendencies. Then the events of the film hit and you see trauma build on abuse and spiral into something totally out of his control. He's had to make life or death decisions his entire life, resulting in this volatile mixture of anxiety, anger, and, deep down, the knowledge that he has consistently, repeatedly failed to save the people he loves most. Running a team of superheroes has only solidified the toxic ideas life has taught him: you cannot protect everyone, you are not strong enough, you are not enough, you didn't *do* enough. You need to do better, be stronger, or you're going to lose even more people. That's why he's like this. He has been traumatized enough times that I genuinely think that if he ever admitted to himself that he's in the wrong, he would have a complete emotional breakdown.
    I have never hated a villain less. He's doing bad things and making bad decisions but it makes so much sense for who he is and the life he's lived that I can't be angry at him for it, I just want him to find some healing and some peace.

    OMG THE MIGUEL VIDEO IS HERE.
    I have been yelling about him since May 31st (French theatre release date) because he's so interesting. His authoritarian streak seems 100% fed by his trauma, a trauma that he also uses to move and control the Spider Society by essentialising it and presenting it in a manner that is not unlike generational trauma. "You have to go through this and that to be valid, otherwise you are NOT really a Spiderperson".
    He also burdened himself with what feels too much, and he has a heavy layer of personal guilt and grief that will require forgiveness for himself and from others as well (considering how badly he treated Miles while he was having a mental breakdown during the train chase).
    I do love the softness hinted at throughout the movie as well: he saves Gwen by stopping her father from shooting at her, then ends up accepting her in the gang, he also pulls a great emotional attempt to convince Miles (after having tried the logic attempt) and I do think he is very sincere there with his concerned expression and the way he physically reaches out to Miles and gently touches him on the shoulder. The whole "becoming a surrogate father" to his alternative self's daughter is a whole thing in itself: both a selfless and selfish act because he wants to help her by covering up the loss, but also because it fulfills his personal desire to have a family and a normal life. And losing that was such a severe blow on him, that now the idea that what he is doing may be wrong that just being questioned by Miles on it is enough to send him into a spiral of anger. Because if he is wrong, then what has he been doing this whole time?
    I also think that his intense focus on the Spider Society is a way for him to avoid thinking about himself - when he does, he is literally watching videos of his alternative self and his daughter, and we know what face he makes, it says everything we need to know about his mental state. It's also quite a departure from BEFORE the erasure of that world, but in an interesting way: he's been shown to initially monitor his alternative self and his daughter and smile gently while looking at them, before reminding himself that it is not his life - we see him frown and drop the smile during that scene, as if telling to himself "no, don't". I'd push it as far as arguing that he's denying himself a personal wish there - having a family (and if they follow the comics close enough on that, Miguel's family is immensely fucked up to begin with so having that simple wish kinda breaks my heart, our man is not ok 🫠). And well, we've seen in the poat-credit scene of Into the Spiderverse that he starts the whole thing with a very cavalier attitude, which carried when he recklessly decided to replace his dead alternative self (who died in a highly Uncle Ben way, might I add). It's insanely hard to come to term with that sort of thing, because you have to admit that it's on you and there's nothing you can do to reverse the damages done.
    As a sidenote, he is not a vampire, his fangs are venomous and allow him to paralyse his enemies. The fight against the Vulture would have been much quicker had he not been interrupted by the guys in the helicopter lol
    Also PETER B IS WRONG about Miguel not being funny. The guy is hilarious, just not in the usual quippy Spidey way. He does throw some burns ("you're both terrible, does that settle it?" comes to mind lol) but the funniest part is not what he says/does but how he reacts. When Lyla forces him to loudly say she has to call the back up and he gets caught up in her rhythm, when his ultra serious demeanour won't stop him from handling Mayday gently and correctly (he only gives her back to Peter B when she asks for it!), when he says "it's cooler than a watch" to Gwen like omg Miguel how old are you you sound like an 8yo during recess, when he says "the little nerd on Earth 19999" as if he isn't a goddamn nerd himself and generally complains about the events of No Way Home while saving people... Miguel is very funny imo and here we get a lot of glimpses of how even funnier he could be once he heals and gets back to a healthier mental state. Although I do give it to Peter B a bit, he is notoriously not the funniest Spiderman but he does throw savage burns still.
    Anyway I am going into an in-depth analysis for Miguel on my tumblr blog, those are some of my talking points for the incoming part 2 lol Miguel has been living rent free in my head the whole time

      Just to go deeper into Miguel not accepting there's a chance he could be wrong about the anomaly - if Miles is right, and his universe doesn't collapse, then why did it happen to him, does he not deserve that happiness? I think that's the main reason why he refuses to believe it, he doesn't want to come to terms with the fact that others get to change their stories and he couldn't.

      Yep, this is spot on. He's subconsciously convinced himself that he doesn't deserve to have what he wants, and Miles getting to keep both his parents would be final confirmation that the multiverse itself specifically does not want Miguel to be happy. I'm betting the conclusion to his arc will be learning to accept and let go of his past (specifically the other Miguel's daughter) so he can find a new happiness with a new family (my guess is Jess and her unborn child - there's *something* going on there and she's feels *something* towards Miguel, the writers just haven't played that card yet).

I feel like he is saying that to a part of himself too because Miles is a representation of his past mistake (a big one) and yeah when we first meet Miguel in the post credit scene in 'Spider-Verse' he didn't take the multiverse almost collapsing serious because to him and probably every other Spider that's a Friday night because they would save the day but boy....things turned out bad for him

  • @_kaleido
    @_kaleido Před 10 měsíci +267

    great analysis! Miguel’s story really is a case of sunk-cost fallacy and trauma/survivor’s guilt gone way too far. Miguel has to stick to this one track mind, not giving any chance to doubt or question what he’s done and is doing, because if he questions, then there’s a possibility that he’d have to admit to himself that 1.) things aren’t tied to this unchangeable string of fate, people do in fact have choice and agency, 2.) there perhaps could have been a chance that he could’ve saved his family and adopted universe, and 3.) through his leadership in the Spider Society, he’s condemned dozens, if not hundreds or thousands of Spider-people’s loved ones to death for no real reason.
    I think that’s partially why Miles enrages him so much. It’s not just that Miles is a dissenting voice who refuses to yield to canon, he’s basically a reflection of what Miguel could have been/what he could have had. Despite being an “anomaly” and messing with the canon, Miles still has a happy family, a universe he can call home, and a comparatively stress-free life even as NYC’s one and only Spider-Man. He’s positively changed other people’s lives like Peter B., Pavitr, and Gwen, made them better and more compassionate heroes, without the enforced shared trauma and apathy of the Spider-Society.
    Miguel sees that and subconsciously thinks, why couldn’t he have had that? What did Miles do that he didn’t to deserve a happy life? How is he such a good hero without going through inconceivable amounts of trauma? It’s not just projection motivating his hatred of Miles, it’s jealousy. I think that’s part of why upon first meeting him, Miguel so quickly goes from trying to be calm and understanding, to “let’s just lock him up for a few days, whatever,” to angrily chasing him, to “I WILL TEAR HIM APART WITH MY BARE HANDS.”
    gosh I wrote a lot, sorry but Miguel interests me a lot as a character lol. I can’t wait to see what happens to him in BTSV. Once again great video!!

      @katleido What bothers me about Miles vs Miguel is I don’t get how so many fans and audiences for years say spider-man/characters in general needs to suffer and lose people and go through trauma and what not but now those same people (without any acknowledgment of their hypocrisy) side with Miles who is arguing against the story idea that characters need to suffer and go through loss and trauma and stories need to be dark/serious/downbeat to be interesting ..
      The reason why I love this movie is Miles is literally against all the Spideys and tries to defy basic spider-man tropes and redefine what it means to be spider-man and since he’s the protagonist everyone sides and say Miguel is wrong (which he very well is) but don’t acknowledge how Miguel represents them
      Fans are literally the reason spider-man has a set fate: look at Tom holland’s spider-man people wanted him to suffer in order to like him. Miguel is no different in that first point than average spider man comics fan

The position of his hands, one under her head and the other supporting her body. Isn't that the correct way to hold a baby? Cyclops had no sense of humor and doesn’t have time to make jokes because he knows that he must be the one to lead his gang of mutants because one bad choice can result in the extermination of his mutant race. The responsibility of such a leadership role and as well as his responsibility to keep his powers in check at all times; such things can way in him.

    Thank you! Everytime I watch the scene with Miguel blaming Miles for being the "anomaly" that's messing up the Spiderverse, I see it as a projection of his own guilt and frustration, but everyone is on the band wagon that Miguel's logic makes sense or Miles is to blame. Miguel tried to take someone else's life from another world, he *chose* to be selfish and risk the lives of another dimension. Miles *didn't* ask for the Spider from Earth 42 to bite him! He never knew his graffiti art spot with Aaron was near where the hidden collider was. It was Kingpin and Dr. Ohnn who brought the Spider to Earth 1610, and then let it escape. And The Spot's existence only happened because Kingpin wouldn't stop looking for another life to steal from himself, just like Miguel did. All Miles has been doing is dealing with the situation he was thrown into, not for his own gain, but because of that great responsibility given to him by *his* Earth's Peter Parker, who chose to save him and sacrifice his life as a hero does, and because Miles is a hero himself, of course he'll think of his loved ones first before the word of a random group of Spider People he barely knows and lied to him based on the mistakes of one screw up.

    One of the most interesting parts for me was Miguel saying that Miles was never supposed to be Spider-Man, when in the comics Miguel turned himself into Spider-Man with science rather than being bit by a spider. By his own logic he was never supposed to be Spider-Man either, and I think that's where a lot of his anger comes from, particularly towards Miles because he sees that part of himself in him. Sidenote, I'm pretty sure that injection he does is a re-up on the drug that makes him have the powers, and he does it while saying he doesn't like doing what he has to do. He feels like a fraud, and he knows that he's a hypocrite, but he can't bring himself to stop.

  • @ffreed
    @ffreed Před 10 měsíci +5

    I think this depiction of Miguel is really interesting, because he definitely seems like someone with good intentions who's lost his way. He's surrounded himself with HUNDREDS of Spider-People across different dimensions -- people who either are Peter Parker, or are people with their unique spin on being Spider-Man. This could be a think-tank of epic proportions with some of the cleverest people in the multiverse.
    But instead, Miguel is so burdened by his trauma and loss that he has fully bought into Canon Events so his trauma can still have meaning. He feels like it's his way or the highway, and he seems to have browbeat quite a large amount of people into accepting his narrow way of saving reality.
    The Miguel O'Hara from the 1990s Spider-Man 2099 comics didn't act like this, but I think this is a look at an older Miguel who had a child with his lifelong friend/lover Xina Kwan. His child in the flashbacks looked partially Asian, so I think that might have been a reference to Xina. And this Earth-928 we see in the movie looks like a utopia compared to the grim cyberpunk setting of the 2099 comics, so it's possible Miguel cleaned things up over time. That couldn't have been easy.
    Now the multiverse is his new project...and it's not going the way he hoped.

I’ve seen so many discussions where people are calling Miguel evil or malicious, and honestly it’s so frustrating that they don’t understand the nuances of this character beyond “he’s mean to miles, let him potentially destroy the multiverse 😡”, like Miguel saw with his own eyes what trying to change the canon can do. He’s so misunderstood but I knew that your understanding nuance would be perfect for an analysis video on him.

      Not only did Miguel see with his own eyes- he’s been patching up anomalies across the multiverse for at least a year and a half (according to the fact that Miles has been Spider-Man for that amount of time). And I don’t think all anomaly incidences involve letting someone die. At the Guggenheim with Gwen, he contained the displaced vulture and saved civilians in the museum. He and the entire spider society have been working behind the scenes on removing anomalies and returning them to their home dimensions the whole time by the time across the spiderverse happens.

    From his point of view, he can either capture Miles and let his dad die and save his universe, or he can let Miles go save his dad and risk him destroying his entire world and his dad anyways.
    its like watching your toddler run across a field into some neighbor, you can either let him go and pray that it will be fine. Or you can race across the feild and make sure he doesn't get hurt

    One thing to keep in mind is that Miguel is essentially correct about the canon events themselves, given what's seen in the movies, but he only knows that because he broke one himself. It's dangerous on a universal scale to mess with them, and because of what he went through, he's doing everything in his power to keep people from breaking them, even if it means going too far. What he's trying to do is good and bad at the same time. He's trying to save universes, and to do that he tries to ensure specific events aren't changed because changing them causes the universe to unravel. It's pretty much the same thing as the set points in time introduced in the marvel what if series where Doctor Strange gets obsessed with bringing back Christine, and in doing so, destroys his universe. Because her death is what led to him becoming a sorcerer in that universe and changing that dooms the universe because he wouldn't have been able to save it from various threats. It's like Peter B Parker said, if these certain events hadn't happened, then all the good things they've done afterwards wouldn't have happened. It causes a paradox that destroys the universe.

    It's far beyond the purview of this video and I'm not sure how it's going to be adapted, but beyond the flashbacks we've seen in ATSV and looking at his comics, Miguel's had a really rough home life: finding out his father isn't who he thought he was, growing up with an abusive narcissistic mother who verbally berated him, frequently compared him to others to tear him down and laughed in his face when he revealed he was Spider-Man. He's a jackass the whole movie but I feel like we'll see a very different side of him in the next one.

    For people wondering what exactly Miguel is, essentially, the short version is due to a sabotage experiment, his DNA got mixed with spider DNA, so he took on some spider features, which essentially gave him what we would call more vampiric appearances. Basically, his bite would paralyze you much like a spider does with its prey. It wouldn’t kill someone, but it’s a good way to stop criminals so that he can turn them in.
    He’s such a fascinating character in the comics, and in the few different media versions, we see with him in it. I’m definitely very excited to see what he will be doing in the future movie, and I definitely hope that they don’t just make him a straight up bad guy.

    What makes Miguel so relatable and scary to me, is that I saw moments in my own life where I was going on a similar path of past events pushing me towards detachment and being driven by anxiety. At those moments I just felt completely lost and everything seemed pointless, I felt detached, bitter and angry, and just so lonely and in those moments I just felt like a ghost, with no future, living in the past mistakes and how I could have changed them if I knew better, if I was better. And those moments seem so dangerous, because it's easy to fall to them and self doubt will keep you there if you let yourself go.

    I find it hard to disgree with Miguel. He tried, it failed, and billions perished because of him. So I understand his firm stance against other spider people attempting to save their loved ones.
    I think it's perfectly shown when Gwen asks if he knows for sure it wont work and he says: "You wanna find out?" Is it worth the risk to experiment on solutions when the ramifications are so great?? If Miles is wrong then billions die. If Miguel is wrong, one person dies. I dont think he's unjustified.

    My one hope when Beyond the Spider Verse comes out is that I wish to see Miguel admitting that he's been underplaying his role as a leader. When you are so focused on a belief you feel is the only right thing to believe in, you do start to lose a sense of humanity. I want to see a moment of Miguel admitting his role a leader is so corrupted and that his past was all on him and not on Miles. I wanna see him understand that not every Spider Man has to be born out of the loss of an uncle or a captain of the police department. The whole point of Spider Man is that he always tries, he may not save everyone especially the ones close to him, but he gets back up and tries. Don't ever be afraid of losing people, be afraid of losing yourself over a belief.

Recently, many people have been thirsting over him, (including myself, I admit it), but besides that he’s gorgeous, I think that part of what attracted me to him, is his emotional side. Can relate to him, in some level. I’ve been grieving, almost my whole life. Lost someone I loved as well.
    Funny how when we detect someone that shares our pain, we kinda get attached, or protective over them. Anyway, I have enjoyed the process of meeting his character as a whole. And this video was a great contribute to my knowings.

  • @notleviathan855
    @notleviathan855 Před 10 měsíci +3

    I hate to say it, but I personally believe Miguel is right. He went to a different dimension to save his daughter, ignored/avoided the canon events, and cost trillions of people their lives. Because it doesn't just destroy earth, it erases the ENTIRE universe. He's seen what can happen if someone fumbles around with canon events, and doesn't want anyone to make the same mistake he did. I think the 'right thing' to do is, follow the canon events to the exact order. What if spiderman doesn't save the right girl, or can't stop a train. Soon enough a whole reality is destroyed, and potentially ALL of them. We've seen what happened with Tom Hollands Spiderman when he messed with reality, ALL of the villains from ALL realities were coming there (regardless of if they died or not) to beat him up. The only solution was to make everyone, even his closest friends people he saved the galaxy with forget who HE was, just so reality didn't collapse.
    Miguel is right, ignore one too many canon events everything crumbles. We've seen towards the end of the second spiderverse movie that if X person quits their job, Y thing won't happen to them because they're not becoming Z. The issue is, the next Z has to be someone close to spiderman. It's one of the key moments in every spidermans story, a canon event that makes them into heroes. If you've read the comics, we've seen what happens when spiderman goes dark. When spiderman punches someone, the force he's using is about the strength it takes for normal people to lift a spoon. So when he punches someone, he's not using everything he's got. His webfluid is capable of being shot point blank into someones mouth, into their lungs to drown them in webfluid. He explains all of this while he beats down a villain, and threatens to kill him if anyone hurts his Aunt May again.
    Miguel isn't an antagonist because he enjoys it, he's the antagonist because he HAS to be. He's seen first hand what happens when a spiderman goes too far, tries to save the 'wrong' person, and entire realities disintegrate before his very eyes, his daughter in his arms as she was terrified. He has tried, and so have other spidermen. We saw what happened when Spider-Man: India had his police chief saved by Miles, a giant reality eating hole opened up. The Spider Society came in an effort to stop it's growth, and possibly shrink it. By saving ONE person, and entire reality is pretty much doomed.
    In the end Miguel is right, perhaps the methods he is using are because he's invested too much. However, if he doesn't do it how many realities will be lost? How many people will just vanish from existence? How many versions of his daughter will die all because one person needed to be saved? 'The needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the few, or the one.' If Miguel, and other spidermen have to let one man die to save their entire reality is has to be done. Because it isn't just earth being erased, it's the entire galaxy

    One of thr things I really saw was thet the others don’t know how to approach someone like Miguel. When Miles first greets him he’s way too much for Miguel. With someone like him you have to be able to read them and meet them where they’re at. When Peter remarks that O’Hara isn’t funny; he doesn’t know how to talk to someone like Miguel. If they were more quiet and gentle with him they could have seen him in a different way. I have had experience dealing with someone like Miguel. And you really need to know how to read them. Miles is a KID talking to a SOLDIER. There is a really delegate way you have to be around people like Miguel.

    1. i see a lot of people pointing this out in the comments, but still - miguel is 50% spider, not a vampire spider-man
    2. i think his empathy for gwen comes from him being a dad of a little girl - he lost his daughter, and right in front of him is a father that almost shot his own daughter, because he thought she was guilty. you can see that miguel is kinda hesitant, because he knows gwen is a kid and won't be always thinking with her brains (meaning she won't be super efficient), but he also knows she has nowhere else to go. if miguel left gwen there - she would be lost, both as a spider-woman and as someone's daughter. i bet if the situation was backwards - gwen being the anomaly and miles being in gwen's spot, the reaction and overall feelings for miles would be different. i would even suggest that if gwen was an anomaly miguel wouldn't be as violent with her as he is with miles. simply because when you are a parent, especially of a child of certain gender, your reaction can be different to what happens to another child of the same gender.
