    As usual I started my project with disassembly of the lock. This was a very simple disassembly. I was very curious to see how the mechanism was build and I was surprised by how simple the mechanism was. At that point it also became obvious that the key was not original key but most likely the seller had lot of old keys and tried them all and found this was working and then the lock was forgotten somewhere for years and it got rusty. After the disassembly the parts were put into rust remover.
    I chose not to polish the parts because I thought this sort of bluing would nook more like what the lock has looked like when it was new.
    I also wanted to make anew key because the key I got wasn't a perfect fit and it seemed like a fun challenge. I took a bolt which was roughly the same thickness the original key had been then I filed a simple ornament on the bolt to make the key look older. I made the ring for the key from nails.I probably have to make special episode about all the times I use nails as something other than a nail. Then I used a dremel to shape the key to fit the lock. This was easy as there was only one of these "pins". I wouldn't want to have the lock on my front door as it seems you can open it with keys that are pretty far from the original one. Also making a new key wouln't be hard if you have any idea what's inside the lock. It only stops burglars from walking straight in.
    The key I made, looked "wrong". It was too shiny and smooth so I forced some patina on it. I achieved this with electrolysis. The process I used is electrolytic rust removal but on the steel rod instead of the key. This causes the key to corrode so it looks like pitting from rust. After maybe and hour or a bit more I already had nice patina. After the key was finished all the parts were blued with gun blue and oiled to get prevent it from rusting again. The bluing is for both rust protection and aesthetic purposes.
    Thank you for watching the video!

Graphite is ok to loosing up a lock, but I wouldn't use it in a lock, especially automobile locks. It does gunk up. You wouldn't believe all the locks I've had to get that crap out to get the lock to work again. Might be ok to use on the lock in this video, but not a wafer lock.

      Came here for this. He definitely should lube that lock with a little assembly grease or something similar. If not to prevent rust, then at least to prevent sticking and make the operation smoother. It's why a lot of old mechanisms like this failed so easily. Rough metal on metal with nothing for parts to glide on.

    • @AlphaMachina
      @AlphaMachina Před 4 lety +10

      @@wireworks616 I've found that white lithium grease works well in locks of most types. It's not too heavy, sprayable, seems to last a good long while. We used it on locks when I worked for a real estate company, keeping up with repairs and renos on apartment complexes. We rekeyed locks, new pins, and filing blanks by hand, pretty regularly in that business, if you can imagine. This was back in the mid to late nineties. I still rekey all of my own locks instead of calling a pro. Got pretty good with some of the more amateur rake picks at first, too, but I started making my own picks out of scientific feeler gauges and flat sewer rod from Home Depot or Lowes. Cheap, and can shape them with my Dremel, hand files and some sandpaper taped down to my bench. Get some really great, very specific picks like that, and the gauges are a perfect material for super cheap, even better than most of the government steel picks I've used. Leads me to believe that the pick industry is a massive scam. The inflation on the "good stuff" is ridiculous, when one could simply make their own out of superior materials at home for a very small fraction of the price.

    Excellent video, thoroughly enjoyed it. Actually installing the lock on the door to see it in action was a bonus. Clever positioning of your subscribe sign too.
