  • I this episode I’ll restore this old lift arm lighter from 1930. I think the manufacturer is called Polo. It has a bad spark, minor dents that need to be fixed and the plating is mostly gone. No extreme defects this time. I think the seller also accidentally sent me extra an lighter. I too has some minor dents and the plating is almost completely gone. The brass on both lighters is also patinated.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------
The disassembly of this one was simple the wheel was attached with a tiny screw and the arm was held together by a spring and it was disassembled by only pressing the arm down and bulling it backwards, so it popped out of the slot. The spring was not attached in any way but it was just pinned between the arm and the body of the lighter.
I put all the parts in MC-51 rust remover which will also remove patina from the brass. This was followed by sanding out all the scratches and tiny dents. While sanding I also made a dent removal tool from a nail. This helped me to push some of the deeper dents back up. Whatever shallow pits were left from those, I sanded down. The wall was very thick, so this was no problem. After sanding, everything was polished. The shinier surface you have when you start plating, the better results you get. Also you can’t polish the plating too much because it’s thin. Some polishing can be done if you plate thick enough layer, like I did.
For nickel plating I used a nickel electroplating solution I’ve made myself. It’s essentially a nickel sulphate solution. I might do a tutorial on this at some point. This is still a very slow system but I want to figure it out myself rather than use a commercial system. That’s half of the fun. Cleaning the parts well before plating is essential.
After plating I gave the parts quick polish on some areas but mostly it looked fine after I had rinsed everything with water and got the black oxide off the plating.
While the plating was going on, It was several hours, also sharpened all the teeth of the wheel with a tiny file. Although it didn’t take many strokes on each teeth this took a good while because they were so tiny.
On previous video someone commented that I should have the wick running trough the whole lighter and before putting the cotton in and then cut it in length afterwards. This seemed to work well. Almost all comment are red and tip are listened although I don’t have time to answer most of them.
Thanks for reading all the way trough. If you have questions, leave a comment. I might answer or not, I get a lot of comments and questions so I can't answer all but I try to read it all and answer a few every day.

I’m on the downhill side of life... I grew up a cowboy on a cattle and sheep ranch in New Mexico (25000+ acres), not as big as you might think, our neighbors ranch had 792,000 acres! Most of the old cowboys smoked and many of the real old timers rolled their smokes. Went on to to the Navy, go figure..., then worked for Apple, IMB and then flew for the airlines then retired. Now I build custom homes and am busier today than I can imagine...... so busy I long for something simpler.... something that takes my mind off of the myriad of issues that arise every day, 7 days a week. Well, I can’t tell you why but watching you restore these lighters and the funny way you pull it all together..... well it’s helps get my mind off of my crazy world. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. Maybe, if it’s possible try to learn a little about the history or manufacturer of the lighters. It would be nice to know who made them and what years they were in production.

So cool, I was looking specifically for lift arm lighter repairs (like willow from don’t starve) and turned out you already made a video about it! Thanks OT :D

Great Job, Odd Tinker! I collect old lighters, well I collect a lot of lighters. Great to see another enthusiast. Thought perhaps the old flint was set up in the tube, which you see a lot. Then someone picks it up and shoves another flint in behind the blockage. We come along and and unscrew the plug and the spring goes flying. Great videos! I subscribed.

I have a very similar lighter. A ladies version... smaller. I love it, it still works. I changed the flint too, but the rest is still in perfect order. Interesting vid.

Arh ! a good Polo lift arm, it worth at least 40~50 dollars now I think.
Old lighters are cool, satisfying and elegant; I got myself a 1930's luxour lift arm for about 70 dollars, beautiful.

I wouldn't say it's the best finished one you've done but at least you gave it a go so more power to you.

Like it..Nice Work and the nickel plating was cool. Yep a bit to much fluid and it was a good thing you didn't have it in your pocket, I had a few burn my leg from leaking. But I don't use one anymore. Peace
