    This Gamma Stirling was an Alpha before. But, in despite of a lot of modifications, this Alpha disappointed me, it has never realy worked. Not reliable and it needed to be refreshed with water and a big amount of heat to work. So I decided to transform it into Gamma. And now, it work well with a low amount of heat. It is pressurisable. On this video, it works with air. But a try with helium is planned and will be shown in an next video.

    Very nice! Its engine is the first I know with sealing rings on the pistons, and lubricant! Are you sure that it does not produce much friction?
    The Alfa engine perform better, but can not leak air and does not have friction because their best torque is in high gear.
    Since Gamma, has a larger internal volume of air thus has a good torque at low rotation, and work with small air leaks.
    Which one is the stroke of the piston and its diameter?
    I really enjoyed the performance of your engine, especially by using O-rings on the pistons and the finish of your engine is perfect. Congratulations!
    Leandro Wagner.

      Manual do Motor Stirling - Leandro Wagner Thanks Leandro,Ø is 29mm and stroke 24mm. So it is 16 cm3 (I have mistaken when I have made the video). I forget to say in the video that this engine has a ratio of 1. It means that the swept volume by the piston is egal to the displaced volume by the displacer.The oil is necessary for this engine. It was the case too when it was an Alpha. The use of quadring seal oblige to lubricate. But it is not a perfect solution. I don't have find better for the moment but I search. With no doubt, the seal of the piston is the biggest difficulty with little engine like this one. But the next will be much bigger. 450 cm3. I hope to make this engine before July of this year. And before, you will see the transformation of this Stirling (czcams.com/video/DuiUJh2H-J0/video.html) which has an integrated electric generator into a gamma type with a ratio 2 (the displaced volume is 2 time bigger that the swept volume). My best engine (czcams.com/video/kPpSuPwQxKg/video.html) is like that. It is simple, but very efficient. It run at 1300 rpm with a low amount of heat. It start quickly. It can run until 1750 rpm with the last improvements. It would deserve better video. The big (the 450 cm3) will have too a ratio of 2.

      Chris workshop Very interesting that his research, generally loses much rotation with a larger volume, or do you want to do with a larger number of cylinders?
      I thought it was beautiful inside the cylinder, congratulations!
      I'll wish you good luck and success, I have a lot to learn with you.

      Manual do Motor Stirling - Leandro Wagner Thank you Leandro and sorry to respond to you so late. My 450 engine will have only one piston and will be a gamma with Ross linkage. I don't want it runs fast . I want it to do the least possible noise. To have a bit of torque, the piston will have 100mm in diameter. For the moment I ask me if I make it pressurisable or not. Probably I will begin to make a non pressurisable version and I will see after in function of the results. I hope to test it with helium. Normally it should be possible, I think it will be perfectly sealed. You know, I have made a test with helium with my last 16 cm3 engine. But it was very dissapointing. It is the reason why I don't posted a new video. I don't know if I have well filled it with helium. To be sure to fill it well with helium, I have to make a specific tool and I have no time to make that right now.

    • @ManualdoMotorStirling
      @ManualdoMotorStirling Před 9 lety

      Chris workshop Wow! An engine with this volume and single set of pistons, really have little speed, but it will have a great torque and certerza will be silent.
      As for his poor result with its latest engine, using helium gas, maybe it would be the lack of heat in the engine, that is, if you have a good heat transfer into the engine and at the same time or even pressurized with helium gas can come to worst result due to high compression. This was just an idea I had.
      For I also had this problem with my homemade prototypes, when I put the engine to run on a single candle, it barely worked, because as the heat was little, the engine itself had little power to overcome compression. Thus was required to reduce the compression to which it works well.
      Your engine of 16 cc, it has a regenerator? If not, this can be a limiter with Helium gas.
      I try to imagine and can not even do idea how you can make a seal using helium gas !!!
      I'll send you a personal message, to share an idea, I hope to find.
      Leandro Wagner.

    the hours of hard work you poured into this build and assembly disassembly video WOW.
    what was the starting constant rpm speed you got out of this engine ?
    speed torque characteristics ? can you share the drawings for this build for my school project :) , thanks .

    • @Chrisworkshop
      @Chrisworkshop  Před 7 lety

      This engine ran at about 1200 rpm. It was disapointing because it had a very low power and very low efficience. I don't have measured his torque. I think its power was only 0,5W max with gaz blowtorch. This one is much better ( czcams.com/video/b0te4alVzBs/video.html). It has about 2 times less displacement but it is 5 times more powerfull(2,5W) and it reachs this power with much less heat. It is heated with an alcool blowtorch wich is much less powerfull than gaz blowtorch.
      And this one (czcams.com/video/LLzFi9aZcBM/video.html), 18W with gaz torch, but I'm sure that it is possible to strongly improve it.

      Bonjour,
      Ça c'est une bonne question à laquelle je cherche encore la réponse. j'imagine qu'il faut que l'air rencontre le moins de résistance possible pour passer d'une chambre à l'autre et que les échangeurs soient les plus efficaces possible. Facile à dire mais beaucoup moins à faire. Mon moteur le plus rapide tournait à 2700 tr/mn. Certains arrivent à dépasser les 4000 voir 5000 tr/mn. J'ai pas encore trouvé le secret. Quant au couple de ce moteur, il est extrêmement faible. Ce moteur sortait dans les 0,5W. Pas terrible. Il est agréable à regarder mais c'est pas une grande réussite.

    thanks for posting. some thoughts it looks like you started with a quality two-piston alpha stirling. it is now a displacer-alpha.
    stirling engines can only produce low torque. so higher engnine speed, and reduction gear, is better than lower.
    lubricants break down over time and should not be used. use different metals at points of motion; steel on brass, etc, bushing inserts could be used.
    make sure power piston is as light as possible. and no rings. cheers

    En los últimos días he podido encontrar una aplicación tipo motor "Stirling" que pienso será impactante demostrar; pues con una flama aplicada a en la zona adecuada del mismo motor podremos ocasionar que su eje gire a modo de motor de fluidos. Los motores "Stirling" trabajan a base de la diferencia de temperatura del aire que les impulsa en un circuito cerrado. El nombre que considero propio para este prototipo es "Motor Yonto Stirling".
    Sin más de momento les envío muy afectuosos saludos, amigos míos.

    I quite enjoyed your demonstration, breakdown and reconstruction of your gamma-type Stirling. I too found your use of O-rings to be fascinating. Most constructions I have witnessed do not use hermetic seals of any kind. Maintaining the atmospheric pressure within the cyclinder is key to good power distribution. Unfortunately, O-rings require periodic maintenance to keep them in working order. This is not a big problem; however, the coefficient of friction can be reduce further. Have you considered using Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) sealing rings? PTFE has many qualities that allow it to serve as a good seal. Most importantly it has one of the lowest coefficient of friction against any surface, it is highly resistant to heat and it is self-lubricating down to 5 Kelvins.

    • @Chrisworkshop
      @Chrisworkshop  Před 9 lety

      Thomas Anthony You are right. The O ring (or quadring rings in this case) are not a good solution. I tried PTFE seals that I have machined myself. But it didn't work. I suppose the PTFE bar I have is not suitable for this use. The famous Stirling maker Andy ROSS use Rulon J. But I didn't found this kind of PTFE in low quantities. And it seems that is very expensive. In my next engine that will be a 450 cm3, I think the probleme of the seals will be easier to resolve.

    • @tanthony90
      @tanthony90 Před 9 lety

      That is interesting. Rulon J is quite superior in the way of PTFE compounds. As you said, it is very expensive for a roll sized suitable for manufacturing applications.
      Thank you for your response, I appreciate your feedback. I too have plans to develop a Stirling engine for experimental and home energy use. I will look forward to watching the results of your 450 cm3 Stirling engine and your solution to the sealing issue.

    • @Chrisworkshop
      @Chrisworkshop  Před 9 lety +1

      Thomas Anthony For the moment, I keep the quadring seals solution. I don't have better under my hand. But the sealing is easier to make on a big engine than on a small one. And friction has less consequences too. Because the small engine has a very low power, any friction is catastrophic for it.However I think that a good solution is to use seals like those which are in the pneumatic cylinders. I have not yet had the time to look this solution in details, but I will soon.

      @lucamanenti4849 Před 7 lety

      I like your model and certainly is far more advanced than many who I saw on youtube. Especially for the chance to change easily configuration. The engines that you saw on our website are old now. Now we are developing a new model should reach 3kw electrical power.

    • @Chrisworkshop
      @Chrisworkshop  Před 7 lety

      3 kW of electrical power, it is very intereseting and usefull. Enough to supply all the equipements of a today house. I suppose that you have a commercial project for such an engine, no?
      I hope to reach at least 500W. Not enough to supply all electric equipements of my house but enough for lighting if all the light are LED. And maybe enough for computer and TV too. It will be heated with this kind of system : czcams.com/video/RCUeWoIOwnw/video.html
      I would like to reach this power without pressurization because a pressurized engine is harder to make. And I want that this engine turns slowly to avoid noise and vibrations. So To reach such a power I need to make a big engine. And to produce the parts I can't take big blocks and machine them. Too expensive. It is the reason why I began recently to make cast parts. My first try are succesful and allows me to make big step toward this big engine project : czcams.com/video/TAlCrAJuue4/video.html
      I dont have decided if I make an Alpha, a Gamma or a Beta. I never made a Beta, but I think that this engine has advantages in the construction of a big engine.
      For the moment, I don't see another thing that annular exchangers. They are less efficient than tubular exchanger but easier to build. I think I will design a system with annular exchanger first, but that will be easyly changed by tubular exchanger without to have to make a new engine.

      It's exactly what I say. Alpha has two pistons (no matter the position, 90°, 180° or others) and Gamma as only one piston (no matter the position and distance between piston and displacer too). Beta has only one piston too but piston and displacer are on the same axis. I suggest to you to visit NASA Website for more serious informations.
