It's sad when a person can go missing and not be missed!
It happens every day. There are runaway youths. There are tons of homeless people. And whether they come from a broken home or just dealt them a bad hand. There’s no one there to miss them.
A lot of times, they are “missed” in that their family doesn’t know where they are, but they’re never reported missing because they either go “missing” a lot (due to drugs, mental illness, etc) or they give their family some reason to not look for them. Oftentimes with cults, they tell their families that they’re leaving, which gives the family no reason to look for them. People miss them in that they’re like “Hmm, I miss my relative” but they don’t know that they’re missing-missing. On the other hand, there are also a lot of people who have no family or friends to miss them. I’m really not decided which is sadder.
@@caittails I agree, I just summed it up with my simple statement. No matter the circumstances, it's sad that a person can die and the only one that knows is the person that caused it.
@@caittails Pretty sure that any family who loved their 'missing' person would report them as missing eventually. Even if it wasn't unusual or surprising for them to be 'missing'.
And the same with someone who disappears off to a cult.
Nobody should just be saying "Well, they told me they were going, so it's normal that I've never heard from them again".
There is never a good reason when people just accept that someone in their family has 'disappeared' without informing authorities (even if much later on).
The only reason I can think of is that they didn't love them enough and don't really care.
They can be reported and the report filed and forgotten. Ask the Center for Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women or your State’s Native Tribe or tribes.

Yes, at the crossroads of hiking, through-hiking and true crime. Just a matter of time.
I’ve been watching him since 100K, he definitely has the style to keep going big.
I sold a bus pass to Yosemite to Stayner. Didn’t know he was a killer until the police showed up to ask about it. Freaked me right out for weeks after that, knowing how close I was to a murderer.
Wow, that’s crazy!
Most people have come into contact or at least crossed paths with a killer at some point. They usually just don’t know it.
He used to party at the river with my sister and her friends. She was alone with him on a couple of occasions there He even dated one of her friends who ended up mental and moving away after he was arrested. My sis says he always seemed like a normal guy.

I live in sc and there are TONS of homeless people in the woods around here. Trash left behind from their camps and whatnot are very sad to see. Not saying this is the case here but you are right the whole story sounds pretty sus.
@@catherinewardwell2117 I thought his story was false too. I also thought Papini was lying. Some believe others at face value. Others put a paranormal spin to it. Henry Lee Lucas infamously confessed to any crime. It allowed him access to lots of desired things. The officers made a point of being friendly with him in an attempt to get all of the information. Eventually, they realized that Lucas had looked through case files when the officer stepped out of the room, etc. and that is how he knew details of crimes he literally could not have committed. So now, you hear that Lucas confessed and, if anything, you roll your eyes and assume it will forever be cold then, sadly.
I was there at Summit Meadow a couple of times in the 70s/ 80s .. there was a very small but active ''creek' that ran thru it and I recall sitting under a small waterfall ( on a very hot day) just big enough to get in and sit 'behind' the waterfall w/ my mother ... one of the few things she (and I) remembered even thru dementia ect ..
What a beautiful memory. 😊

My 92yo grandma is mostly just going or coming from Paris and several other vacations. I heard all the stories when they actually happened in the mid 90s, but some of them are so funny, I’ll eagerly hear them “for the first time” again. Especially her story about accidentally staying on Pigalle, the sex worker street in Paris, is just hilarious. And spending time with grams is always nice :)
The chicken bones and beers near the body seem like a detail only someone who was there would know.

Unfortunately when people arent reported missing there usually is only a couple reasons why. They ran away from home, they were visiting or illegally remaining in the country, they ditched their family or were lured somehow. Its scary knowing how many people go unnamed for so long
My dad took me to Yosemite as a child we camped and rode horseback under a waterfall. It was scary out there though I remember thinking as a child I was glad to be with a big group and I made sure I was up toward the front of the pack not the back.
Lucky childhood. That's an awesome memory. :)
I literally ran into Henry Wade Lucas in Dimmit County, Texas when he was on his Texas tour of BS. I was a young lawyer out of San Antonio and had Carrizo Springs (Dimmit Co) as one of my covered territories for court. One day I was hurriedly making my way to the courtroom and was rounding a corner when WHAM…straight into the chest of a handcuffed prisoner!!! Each hand was cuffed to two different Texas Rangers (stereotypical tall John Wayne Stetson wearing cowboys) so he could even deflect me almost bowling him (and the Rangers) backwards. Realizing the situation I offered my apologizes to both the Rangers and Mr Lucas. He was the only one to smile (only one eyed open) and say, “no problem, you have a nice day.”
Hen Lee
❤
Do you mean Henry Lee Lucas? It’s actually crazy how many people I’ve met from Texas who ran into him at some point. Like, CRAZY. It’s really pathetic how the authorities believed him about everything.
Based on the eye comment, I'd have to guess yes @@caittails
Wow!
I ran intro (sometimes literally - my apologies to Steve Buscemi and Margaret Atwood) a lot of both well known and sometimes very creepy people while working in theatre and film, but never anyone as truly bizarre as Henry Lee Lucas, thank gods!
Creepy.
I'd be quicker to believe Cary Stayner killed her than Henry Lee Lucas. But I do wonder if Lucas killed my friend, who vanished while hitch-hiking to her mother's house in Mississippi, from Middle Tennessee. She was never found. She disappeared in 1978. Lucas and Otis Toole claimed to have hunted, killed and cannibalized women together in the area during that time. But they claimed a lot of things that were proven false, so I don't know.
Totally here for this true crime twist on a hiking channel
I've been binge watching since my summer break started the beginning of June and can't get enough. Kyle, you are a great story teller!
I wondered if she was murdered elsewhere and body parts scattered in different places. But however her death came about it wasnt a very happy life. And it was sad that no one missed her and reported her disappearance.
Excellent narration. Your presentation cadence and pronunciation is perfect. Thanks for your videos.
i only hear the words DISTURBING and WEIRD hahahahahahaha
The stock videos are a bit off on this one, Kyle and Levi. The girl at the beginning was downright creepy; but, yes, it worked. Going back to this channel’s roots, it might strike more contrast to amp-up the natural scenery of the sites, and maybe add maps or other infographics, and a bit less of the Wes Craven B-Role.
Good storytelling as always. Thank-you, gentlemen.

Isn't Summit Mdw where the little boy said a dead woman was speaking to him? Don't remember the outcome of that story. Kyle, I'm sure you did a video on him.
I was assuming he was lying since he has made up confessions for multiple murders. The cops would give him the details.
I believe the serial killer confession. If he knew facts that were never released to the public. The reason the DA did not file charges of her murder by him is that he was already convicted to be forever in prison. Another conviction would not do anything but spend taxpayer money and tie up the court system (things DAs do contemplate). Also, all he would have to do is retract his confession and then it would be a hard case to prove otherwise. His defense could say he knew who her killer was and that person told him all the extra details... then shut up. One more potential conviction would not change his sentence anyway, so they didn't go after him for that, leaving any future evidence found to lead to the actual killer if it wasn't him.
Naw, the authorities gave him those details. It’s been proven and admitted that they just gave him tons of unreleased information so they could stop investigating lots of unsolved murders.
HLL was fed many details, which has been proven many times.
As others said, the Rangers fed him information because they believed his lies about being an insanely prolific killer and were a bit of a joke and were this desperate to increase their standing and closure rate. Only a couple of his murders have actual proof that he personally committed them.

Henry Lee Lucas was suspected in killing Adam Walsh , the little boy , whose dad does the TV show John Walsh. I thonk Stayner would be more likely to be the culprit. Sounds more like his MO.
You're right, that's definitely a weird one and I agree we'll probably never know the truth.
Given the way you laid out the facts/discoveries and the timeline, my guess is that it was a true Lucas murder. Poor girl. And no "missing" report filed. Sad. A Yosemite deaths and murders video would be interesting. There are way more tragic endings there than most people know about.
The police gave him a lot of unreleased details of murders so they could try to pin them on him. He most likely got those details from authorities so they could stop looking for anyone else. They couldn’t actually convict him with the details they gave, but they could stop investigating.

21:36 When you fall from over 1500 feet your body literally shatters. Limb are torn off, the body is torn open and your head explodes. This is especially true if you hit the cliffside as you fall. The cliffs in Yosemite are typically over 2000 feet tall.
A climber I knew once found a shoe at the base of Half Dome and was horrified to realize there was still a foot inside. He found the body near by, and it was not in one piece. (He was scouting for a good starting point for a planned climb). Half Dome has a face beyond 90 degrees meaning as you fall the cliff face gets farther away.

I think the cult leader went to Canada, not Mexico. I'm going to take a wild guess and say this is the same guy who had a cult-like situation going on in BC in the early 90's. Genetic geneology is when they get your complete profile and then compare that profile to profiles stored on databases which use them to give their clients information of where their ancestors are from, what nationality they came from and can also identify possible future medical issues they might incounter. The companies will, at times, allow state law enforcement agencies and the US DOJ, FBI etc, to match a persons genetic profile to profiles that they have on record in order to identify family of missing Jane or John Does. They also are able to use this data to find the identity of anyone who left their DNA on a victim and has also sent their DNA into one of those geneology sites. Oh, and if one of their family members has given their DNA as law enforcement will interview people and ask questions about their family members.
Fascinating stuff.

Carey Stayner is the older brother of Steven Stayner whom was kidnapped from Merced California in the early '70s. (Tv movie, I Know my First Name is Steven.) He eventually escaped from the child molester whom kidnapped him. Unfortunately Steven was killed by a hit and run driver in his 20s. I always wondered if this family heartbreak could have led Carey's mind to take such a dark and sinister turn.
I admire the dedication to making yourself look high off your ass in every thumbnail 😂 Relating to Lucas, the police GAVE him the details of MOST of the cases so they could try to close the cases without actually investigating. He’s actually probably not even guilty of several of the murders he was convicted for.
He was only guilty of two. Every other confession was bunk.
I went to Yosemite in the summer of that year with my family.
it is a very large meadow flat and open and very beautiful. I hiked Yosemite many years, lowlands only, and it can be very beautiful but brutal as well if you are not prepared for the harshness of winter.
people dont believe there are really cults that are deadly out there....there are so many and that's why they are so dangerous if you don't believe in them they can hide.
Wow, so disturbing, disturbing, disturbing.
There's a documentary about Lukas where he admitted to lying about the murder confessions he made, even the confession about the murder of his mother!
A forensic anthropologist can usually tell when a person was killed by and/or scavenged by animals. There will be certain teeth marks in certain patterns on the bones. The most likely by the numbers is an accident but who knows.
That info about Patricia possibly being arrested may be correct. If I understand correctly, in order to link a DNA profile to a specific individual, that individual would have to be in the system, arrested/ fingerprinted. If the individual is not in the system, sometimes they can link the DNA profile to a family member instead.
