    I wonder what your meetings with the different faculty were about? Their busy ppl. What did you discuss with them that made them want to meet you ( when they didn't know you)?

    • @BrisaMarie
      @BrisaMarie  Před 2 měsíci

      Hi!
      So generally once you are a student (if your department culture is healthy) faculty don't mind just getting to know you. Most ... if not all faculty that are teaching, have office hours so even the busiest of busy faculty have at least an hour a week dedicated to students and in worst case scenario you can schedule during those time. Though many are willing to make time for grad students for a 30min-hour slot.
      As for discussion, I usually say in the initial email I just want to get to know them, their time in the department, their research. I explicitly say that I am interested in gettin to know the faculty and the department better. And that removes any expectations beyond just talking.
      Also as a grad student since most programs are small and only admit 1-13 students a year, once your accepted everyone kind has an idea of who you are because your application was accepted and then distributed to the department. So if you are nervous or anything I hope that kind of sheds light on the contexts of these meetings.

      Hi,
      Thanks for clarifying. I wasn't nervous. I was just wondering what to discuss with them at this stage. But you've made it clear. :) Have a good one.

    Thanks for the informative video, How do you understand any new concept? How do you understand the difficult mathematics associated with any concept/topic you encounter in a research article? How did you came up with your research question/problem for your PhD?

    • @BrisaMarie
      @BrisaMarie  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi!!! So I am in a humanities program and not STEM, I am also based in the US so how my process and program works will look different from stem programs.
      1) I personally learn best with others. So when I have to learn a new concept I try and find a community to talk through it with. This way i can think about it, ask questions and practice explaining my thoughts.
      2) I don't study maths so there aren't any mathematics in my articles, BUT if there are things I don't understand that seem important to the article I try and find CZcams videos or blogs that discuss it quickly or in more basic terms so I can come back to the article with a better understanding!
      3) for most US based humanities program you might take years to figure out your research topic/question it usually develops over time through the classes and experiences that you have. We also work closely with our advisers to help construct a feasible project. BUT I suggest if you have to do it on your own before you apply to really consider how do you like to do research (methodology) and what do you enjoy studying? Then from there try to see how your method brings a unique perspective to your topic. And go from there!
      I hope that helps a little bit!

      Hi! Yes! There absolutely was a beeping. I am sorry that it made the video hard to watch. I COMPLETELY understand. IF you still need/want the information the video does have a full transcript that is publicly available and provided by CZcams. But I also totally get it if not! Thank you for commenting!
