- Michelle, from Virtual Hand Care, guides you through her Top 5 Finger and Thumb Strengthening Exercises with Therapy Putty. This follow along video will give your fingers and thumb the workout they need to improve your hand grip and pinch strength.
Did you know you need at least 20 lbs of Grip strength and 3-4 lbs of Finger strength to do most daily activities? And your thumb does half of your pinch strength that is why it is important to include your thumb in your hand strengthening routine.
If you are having difficulty opening bags, typing, tying your shoes, or just want to work on improving your hand and finger strength, then these exercises are for you!
These finger and thumb therapy putty exercises will work on key pinch, tip pinch, 3 point pinch, hook fist, full fist, and thumb extension. Michelle is using 4 ounces of light resistance x- soft yellow putty in this video. She recommends using 4 or 6 ounces when doing these exercises.

Thank you so much , I had an open fracture by an edger in the day before thanksgiving . It has been so painful for two weeks now . Thank you so much for these videos. I had broken my radius on right arm and I'm in healing without a splint week 8. Doing finger rehab at home and doctor wants me to exercise fingers but just told me open and close which is nothing. Ur exercises help me so much that i know im ahead of time when i go to real rehab. Just need to loosen up the thumb and index finger and my wrist. Thanks again

I like theses exercises. Wish i had seen theses long ago. Whereas my first introdu tion to theraputty was pulling objects out of the putty. Im not too fond of that. But i need to rehab my stroke affected hand. Thank you.

I think you're exactly what I'm looking for. I just spent 6 days in the hospital with at staff (MRSA) infection in my right index finger. The nurse said check out hand therapy on youtube. I was left with a descent sized wound between my PIP and MP joints. I'm still dressing it with packing strip, but the wound is getting smaller. I want to stay out in front of this to maximize ROM as I recover. Extension is not the issue, it's flexion. Can you point me to which videos you think might be most applicable?

I broke my pinky almost two months ago and needed pins placed in to straighten it, i had those pins removed recently and my pinky is sooo stiff right now! I've been watching your videos to help me get my ROM back but im having trouble keeping my pinky straight. What should i do?

At night i clench my fist really hard, and it hurts when i wane up. I also cant seem to have straight hands when supporting weight on them, the fingers will curl. No diagnosis for now, but will these exercises help or make it worse?

I fell on ice in the road on March 7, 2023, and shattered my wrist and had distal radial surgery on March 15th where the Dr. installed a metal plate with 8 screws. I recently found your videos because my cast just came off on Thursday and I will be starting physical therapy as soon as I can but for now, I'm on my own and my Dr. wants me to start working it. I did keep my fingers as mobile as I could while in the cast. I bought the putty, the foam and a couple other hand therapy balls I found but are still too firm to use at this point. My wrist is still pretty swollen and sore. Very limited mobility right now but I'm hoping with all these exercises, I'll regain my strength and flexible mobility back. I think I want it to happen faster than it's going to take but I'm willing to do the work because I don't want it to stay like this. :(

What if after you do these exercises, the most pain you have is in the palm below your thumb.

You don't need putty; all that can be done just using your hand (and that exercise is useless anyway).
