No, he was not! Although it's just another subjective opinion but Christopher Walken was phenominal in Catch me if you can and deserved his 2nd oscars that year. Beside, there were a lot of more worthy performance in 1999 than Cooper's troubled father in American Beauty my friend!
+Ngoc Toan Nguyen well Imo both performances were very good, but Chris Cooper won by a nose, besides, Walken already had an Oscar for his incredible performance in the deer hunter, seems fair to me, two actors with their own Oscars
Jorge Esquivia Escobar I mean if you take the perspective of Oscar should belong to the worthiest ones then Walker for sure was the winner. But if you choose to give the oscar to the one who hasnt got it yet then fair for me!
@@DevyanshBahri Just realized that it's been twenty years since seeing it for the first time. I credit that scene for my being a better driver than prior. It's a good reminder to maintain vigilance behind the wheel, especially when loved ones are in tow.
He is a remarkable actor. Extraordinary in everything he does. I find his speech so moving. I imagine that when he is saying to his wife that she carried the burden that he may be referring to their son who was born premature and was disabled and they worked tirelessly to improve conditions for children with cerebral palsy. Tragically their poor son died when he was 14 years old in 2005. I think you can see the pain of this in his performances.
Incredible actor!!!! Chris Cooper is one of the greatest actors of our generation, yet so underrated! When I see his name in the credits I know it's going to be a wonderful movie! He is simply Outstanding in every role he's ever portrayed! Love him so much!
Chris Cooper is absolutely brilliant! I love his work! A constant professional! My heart goes out to his wife and him for the lose of their beautiful son. I only have love for you all!
The 2002 acting Oscar race was the most unpredictable one in recent years Chris Cooper (GG,CC) vs Christopher Walken (BAFTA, SAG) Nicole Kidman (GG,BAFTA) vs Renee Zellwegar (GG, SAG) vs Julianne Moore (CC) Daniel Day-Lewis (CC, SAG, BAFTA) vs Jack Nicholson (GG, CC) (both didn't win!) SAG didn't get it right for 3/4 of the race!
+LetsMakeltALife yes, this year seems competitive too Actor: Fassbender vs Dicaprio Actress: Blanchett vs Larson vs Lawrence S. Actor: I have no idea who is frontrunner S. Actress: Mara vs Winslet vs Vikander
Although Chris Walken gave one of his best performances as Di Caprio' s father, this is one of the perfect winners in the supporting category. Chris Cooper's stardom was long overdue and he could hardly have asked for a stronger vehicle to finally put him over. He played his bizarre role of the horticulturalist in Adaptation with a relentless passion and a complete understanding which defied reason, utterly becoming that guy, and moving the quirky plot along with more help than any of the film's other ingredients. A very satisfying win.
That's a true actor. Love his work and his passion. I have to say... "Adaptation", along with "Amadeus", "Network" and "American Beauty" have changed my life for real.
@Diego Pisfil sixth sense was a boring, predictable shit show. Where as American Beauty was bold and not afraid to tell a story. Colors blending, hearts racing. Thats how you make a fucking movie
I think it's really evident from this speech, and the way he thanks his wife, that Chris Cooper definitely went through a lot of struggle before winning this award.
Adaptation is my favorite movie and I had watched it at least fifty times before I started wondering who played laroche. This was such a great actor and I had never seen him in anything else (I thought). I was pretty familiar with cooper and hated him after seeing him in the bourne movies (just because he played a lot of government jerks..or that's at least the Mandela effect I had of him). When I realized it was him as laroche, it was as amazing as finding out that it was depp in fear and loathing (which I had seen at least five times before one of my nine roommates told me he was playing hunter).
Its too bad the clip didn't include Connelly's introduction video of all of the past Best Supporting Actor Oscar winners. It was a really cool montage that they did for all of the other categories as well that year to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Oscars.
As much as I LOVED his performance in Adaptation, the real winner that year wasn't even nominated. One day the Academy will recognize that sort of acting and he will win his precious!
such a modest and lalented man... I liked that wshen the winner was announced, still shocked, he started to applause and his wife grapped his hand to stopped him... I also enjoyed him in Seabisquit...
Smokey in Cars 3. Another role he was perfect for being a old friend of Doc Hudson played by Paul Newman who was also in this category for Road To Perdition in 2003.
I need me some wonderful Chris Cooper in Yellow Stone pls when he said his wife took on all the burden he was talking about their precious son with CP.
Chris Cooper is one of the most underrated actors of all the times
You literally commented this on a video of him winning an Oscar.
Absolute Meathead You’re correct!
He was amazing in October Sky too.
Not anymore LMAO
well deserved, he also deserved a nomination for his role in american beauty
the scene when he kiss Lester Burnham is also shocking...

cant believe he didn't win (or nominated) for American beauty.
a lot of his scenes were apparently cut from american beauty.
+Abdullah Ferdosi so? have you seen the scenes that were left in?!
Yeah. He was amazing in that. I actually can't think of a single, bad Cooper performance.
Who would you not have nominated instead?
He was not given enough screen time apparently.
Chris Cooper has great acting in Adaptation.
Not only a phenomenal actor, but one of those who’s been married since 1983…to the same woman…

Indeed. You are not seeing Chris Cooper you are seeing the character he was portraying. He disappeared.
Chris Cooper is such a wonderful character actor. I'm invested in all that he entertains me with! Cheers Everyone

Beautiful speech and person
All the nominees were great
Will Ed Harris ever win? He's been nominated 4 times - Apollo 13, The Truman Show, Pollock and The Hours. Still, Cooper deserved this award.
Love him as an actor.

I don't think there's ever been an "awkward" picture of Paul Newman.. That man was down right gorgeous, and this is coming from a straight guy..
I love how Ed Harris stopped the camera from getting too close to him LOL :-)))
STILL UNDERRATED!
I wish I could marry Jenny Connelly. What a gorgeous woman.
cars 3 brought me here nice work smoky
Laroche me ha roto el Corazón tantas veces... Ojalá lo sepa cada vez que limpia su tan merecido premio
I always like watching the faces of the other nominees and guessing whether or not they're pissed or glad for the winner that wasn't themselves.
Incredible!
For me this list should have been:
Chris Cooper
Ed Harris
Paul Newman
Dennis Quaid
Andy Serkis
I assume Serkis is referring to Gollum, which I don’t really think is eligible.
Andy Serkis? Yes. Not Christopher Walken? Fuck no. Dennis Quaid for which movie?
HAL 9000 For Far From Heaven.
Honestly you could throw Serkis in the mix for either Two Towers or 24 Hour Party People. 2002 was a great year for him.
I'd switch Harris with Walken but that would have been an incredible lineup.
Just found out that two years after this, his son and only child died... 😥
My favorite movie ever.
the toughest year ever...all are the best
Great job by him in the movie. I could barely tell it was him.
lol he told me he was nervous out of his mind up there
