The record was set on june 21, 2001 in western australia between newman and port headland, a distance of 275km (170 miles) and the train consisted of 682 loaded iron ore wagons and 8 GE AC6000 locomotives giving a gross weight of almost 100,000 tonnes and moved 82,262 tonnes of ore, the train was 7.353 km (4.568 miles)

In UK the distance between two station is shorter than this train. Passengers will get into one end and walk all the way to the next station and get off the other end
The biggest train in the world was run in Australia, I just forget the exact figures but I think it was around 565 wagons and about 18 locomotives it was 7.5 klm long and loaded I think it was 50,000 ton gross load.

BHP once had a freight train with 682 ore trucks and 8 locos. I seem to remember the locos were spread out along the train not all at the front or rear.
Correct BHP runs with distributed power. Rio Tinto runs head end powered trains of 2.5km and 238 cars when I was there.

BHP had to derail a longer one than this 3 years that was out of control , had 268 wagons and it reached speeds of over 180 kph so they derailed it remotely , the wreckage was 2 klms long
can we just appreciate the train having that much horsepower to be able to move all of these carts
