  • It's been 1 year since I applied ACF-50 to my Yoder YS640s. It's time to go over my Yoder with a magnifying glass and see if I put the Yoder rust issue to rest.

    I just found your channel while researching pellet grills. My Traeger is about 15 years old and is worn out. I think I am going with the Yoder, but have learned so much in the last hour watching your channel. I subscribed and saved this video as a favorite. Thanks for taking the time to shoot, edit and post these.

    I appreciate the 1 year update. Just applying this to my new Yoder. Had my original Yoder for 10 yrs with very little rust but it was powder coated, i used the cover and it was protected under my deck.

    Followed your advice the first week I received my 640. Six months later, I’ve been very pleased with the minimal rust I’ve experienced. Mine sits outdoors in Florida with a cover by Yoder. During the summer rains, a lot of humidity collects on the Yoder despite its cover, but rust has been minimal. I just hit any rust with sandpaper, clean, spray paint and reapply ACF-50. This weekend will be doing the six month repeat for the 640 and cart.

      Glad to hear it worked well for you. FL is tough with all the salt in the air, but if you stay on top of the ACF-50 it does a pretty good job. Thanks for watching 🍻

    Excellent and informative again, I live in the UK and have the 1500s but as all my grills are kept inside.But as you rightly pointed out the food drips take off the paint,but no drip guard available.
    I have LSG pellet on the way and for sure will be using the same method as you and Yoder advise.

    Just got my Yoder on Friday. Manual suggested Mineral Oil or ACF 50. Mineral oil has a higher smoke point so just did my first “seal” with mineral oil. Also liked that mineral oil is edible/non toxic. I live 12 miles from the ocean in California, lots of fog. Grill is outside and bought a cover. Hoping for the best. Today is my first beef cook. Twin TriTip roasts.

    • @RumandCook
      @RumandCook  Před rokem

      Cool congrats! The outside doesn’t get very hot so ACF-50 works. I measured it to make sure. Both will work though! 🍻

  • @soniCron

    I am shocked to learn that they don't use porcelain enamel. Figured they'd be better designed than to use a simple powder coat. Thanks for the update!

    • @RumandCook
      @RumandCook  Před rokem

      The problem with that is if you scratch it, it will rust out and you can’t repair it. They have a 10 year warranty. Just have to take care of it. Takes a bit of work, but you can make it look brand new again anytime you want. 🍻

  • @chriscat9
    @chriscat9 Před rokem

    I don't have the rust issues on mine in the same locations, mine are always where something is bolted together like the cooking chamber to the cart. I think the salts in rubs are a bigger contributor to rust more than sugars. Think about it as the same as a car, especially like in your location, when they salt roads for snow & ice that can rust cars faster than anything.

    • @RumandCook
      @RumandCook  Před rokem

      Salts and acids will do it for sure. 🍻

    I watched your last video before I bought my Yoder. Did everything you did. Always covered. Never used in rain/snow. This spring was covered in rust. Yoder told me it was normal. Not happy.

    • @RumandCook
      @RumandCook  Před rokem

      My last video being the ACF-50 one? Did you apply a coat to it? Everyone I have talked to who has used it hasn’t had any rust issues.

      @@RumandCook applied at least three coats after I had set it up and did the burn in. Let it sit on my heated garage for two weeks before brining it outside. Yoder sent me a can of paint and told me to use sand paper and repaint it. Complete joke. I’m in the market for an offset, Yoder will not get my business again.

    • @RumandCook
      @RumandCook  Před rokem

      That’s really weird, sorry to the hear that. First I’ve heard of it not working. You could use an electric sander and take it off pretty easily. It’s only surface rust and should come right off. I realize it’s a PITa though.
      Just a heads up. Majority of offsets are going to require a fair amount of work to keep rust free. Many are untreated steal and require oil to help keep rust free. Check out Workhorse Pits. Love my 1975!

      @@MotorInnAutoGroup Sadly thats what concerned me about Yoder, but all the Yoder lover dismiss it. I had a Cimmaron pellet, for about 3 months and sold it. I feel for you. People are brain washed, into thinking it’s normal . It’s not normal and I don’t blame you for looking elsewhere

    • @RumandCook
      @RumandCook  Před rokem +2

      I’m sorry, but it’s not brainwashed it’s understanding the facts. Drive down the road and see any offset at a bbq joint that sits outside, they are all rusted, unless someone spends a lot of time maintaining Steel rusts plain and simple.
      My Workhorse 1975 gets rust and requires maintenance to get rid of it. I have had to remove rust and treat it with Linseed oil twice in 7 months. There is an 8 month waiting list for them because they are so good.
      I get the frustration, but it’s just part of owning a piece of steel that sits outside. This gets worse the closer your are to the ocean as well because of the salt in the air.

    I'm really curious how much of a difference a cover actually makes if your smoker is already under something to protect it from direct weather. I'm new to Yoder but I've seen the sentiment expressed in yoder groups that leaving the cover off is better. In four years with a traeger in the portland oregon area I stopped using my cover for the most part because every time I would take it off the traeger would have a layer of moisture that had been trapped underneath. I figured at least it had a chance to get dry between rains if I left it uncovered. Thanks for the video, I'm looking forward to putting the extra care into my 640 rather than letting it just sit like my old traeger.

    • @RumandCook
      @RumandCook  Před rokem

      I will say, I have seen a layer of moisture under the cover from time to time. That’s why I like to make sure it gets extra treatments. We just need someone to test this theory 😀. 🍻

      @@RumandCook I’ve had these same results with mine under the cover. I’ve got some light surface rust in a few areas where moisture collected under the cover. I’ll refinish it this fall and now that I know about ACF-50 I’ll keep it looking like new for years to come.

    • @RumandCook

      Good question. I’m not sure to be honest. I would think you would probably lightly sand the area to be painted and that should be more than enough. 🍻
