    He hey. Glad you're back uploading content. Your first reaper videos kicked us off to live mixing in a daw and have been doing so with multiple iterations of janky setups with pretty good success overall. Love your videos and really appreciate the real world application you're showing. I'll be interested to see what playbooks and training guides you do for your volunteers to mix and troubleshoot issues.

    Hey hey! Thank you for doing this at all, then specifically for showing how to setup a Solo Bus even when you’re opting Not to use one. That’s above and beyond!
    I have a few questions, most I’ll save for the end of the series, but mostly related to latency, clocking, and timing.
    Here however, I want to ask:
    A) For the Solo Bus to work with the Group Busses, couldn’t you simply solo-defeat them the same way as you did the Broadcast Master. Then if you solo’d a channel, all the other channels would mute but the Busses would stay open. It shouldn’t matter if the other Busses stayed open because the channels feeding the other Busses would be muted, so you’d only hear the channel(s) that were actually solo’d.
    B) By turning off Solo in Place, does that make it a PFL or AFL or what exactly. And would you hear the solo Pre-Effects, or processed. Haven’t yet tried to set it up, I definitely Will. I can’t imagine turning the DAW into Broadcast Mixer and not having the ability to Solo and set an EQ or De-Esser, or cue a VT. But I do Love the idea so far!
    Thanks again.

    Long before internet streaming was invented, our church had exactly the same type of set up you've described here. We took a copy of our multi-channel audio feed and created an independent mix. But instead of sending that stereo mix live to CZcams, the mix was sent to "video" - that is, it formed the soundtrack for a video tape recording. After some post-production effort on the video side, an edited master tape was created and sent to various satellite TV channels for broadcast.
    Then Covid + Lockdown happened, so the stereo mix that previously went to "video" simply became the sound track for the live CZcams feed.
    I would however question your assertion that solo is never needed once you've done your sound check... You're clearly working with singers who always remember the words, never sing out of tune, and you have musicians who never get confused between the chord sequence in the bridge and a pre-chorus - welcome to my reality...
    In our pre-CZcams setup, I used a pair of Yamaha 02R96 mixers in a control room. These mixers have both a master stereo output and a control room output. The solo buss is routed to the control room output, so I've never had a problem with the solo buss affecting the master stereo feed. Over the last 18 or so years, I've got used to quickly hitting solo to check various things - particularly things like which singer has forgotten the words or whether they're getting a little pitchy.
    When we built our streaming setup, I got a pair of shiny new SSL UF8 control surfaces and connected them to my DAW of choice (Logic Pro) only to discover that solo was destructive to the master stereo output... 😞
    I know it costs more money (and its pretty low on the user-friendliness scale), but the only DAW that allows me to create independent master stereo and control room outputs is ProTools. Hence we use this DAW so that our streaming operator does not have to remember to "not press solo" during the service.
    Other than that difference, out setup is very similar to the one you describe here

      @BallastMedia  Před 4 měsíci

      Yup, the idea of a separate "broadcast mix" has been around for a long time! Not asserting that solo is never needed. Just saying you can work around it if you have to. Obviously having solo as an option is a good thing!

      I haven't used FL Studio, but you should be able to use just about any DAW as long as it can be configured to pass incoming "monitored" audio through to the output and apply effects to those. Which I'm pretty sure most will do now. Take a look at my video in this series that shows how the whole system is setup. You can find the links in the description of this video. In that video I'll show you all the connections.

Currently I’m using an iPad with M32 on it, studio headphones, and mixing it to “BUS No. 5”, which is fed into ATEM, all while setting in the sanctuary of the church. @@BallastMedia I'm having a bit of trouble setting up my Reaper to do multi-track recordings. When setting up the routing I will match up my IN and Outs, but not all of the channels are lighting up even when armed. On my M32R I have some channels (about 8) that are local, and then the remaining that are on my stage box. Those are routed properly for sound going to the stage and monitors/bus, but when it comes to going into my DAW for Multi-Track, they play back only about 5-6 channels. However, even then they don't go to their proper channel. FYI this is James again, this is just the Church Production Channel I created 🙂

    I am trying to pursue something similar to this video in my SQ7. I’m sending 32 channels via USB into reaper and L&R back to the SQ out of reaper. I am getting the audio in reaper based on the meters, and the audio is also making back to the mixer (although with a random popping), but I am unable to solo or monitor any channels at my PC. I have the channels armed and monitoring turned on. What do I have to do to be able to hear audio at the PC?

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  Před 5 měsíci +1

      As for the random popping, could be sample rate related. Make sure all your device/software/drivers are running at the same sample rate. Could be system resources, make sure Reaper isn't overloaded (I describe how to check this in my Plugins video in this series). Also, could be USB cable related. Make sure you're using a good quality cable and it's not too long.

    I have a question we use the presonus Studiolive 32 RM.
    I get all the channels through FireWire.
    What would be the proper routing to get the mix for my livestream?
    Could I use the mix from reaper for the live audience as well, to replace the regular mixing from the console?

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Usually you would not want to use the DAW mix to replace your audience mix. The DAW would be for broadcast, and the console mix would be for the live audience. With firewire, you're probably going to have to route the mixed audio back out on firewire to your console and use an output on the console to go to your broadcast.

    Poderia nos explicar como corrigir as lantencias entre os canais,uma vez que aqui na minha igreja local usamos também o Reaper para mix,
    e a moiria do plugins principalmente os TRIGGER, GATE, LIMITER gera muita latência.
    Então uso plugin nativo TIME ADJUSTEME DELAY nas tracks para compensar essa latência,
    mesmo assim percebemos latência entre as faixas no AUDIO FINAL.

    Hi thanks for your work.
    I have a request maybe here is not the best place to ask.
    For my church we broadcast Audio only on internet radio. We would like to extend our reach by broadcasting Audio only also on CZcams, through OBS and just adding a few slides/images.
    We have been experimenting with this but the mix is inconsistent.
    The current broadcasting software we use is called BUTT.
    The audio comes from the front of house analog mixer into a smaller mixer then into the computer, sent out to the Radio server through BUTT and CZcams via OBS.
    We plan to purchase the Behringer X3 going forward.
    The current sound is very inconsistent so your proposal of a separate mix sounds good.
    Is it possible for you to tell just which equipment/setup we should use.
    Is it the same as in your diagram? but we have no need of a camera.
    Do we need another computer or perhaps it should all be configured on one computer?
    Kind regards.

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  Před rokem

      I think you can use mostly the same setup, but you could use ReaRoute (an option at installation of Reaper) to send the final mixed audio from Reaper to the BUTT software on the same computer. Will BUTT use an ASIO driver for it's audio input?

    • @speck-zq5kb

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  Před 8 měsíci

      Do you mean the USB interface on the x32? You can still take your channels out to a DAW and mix them through the USB. There will be a few things you'll need to do differently. 1. You'll need to route your final mix output from Reaper differently. Usually, the easiest thing to do is route the mix back to the x32 to inputs and use those to route to your video. 2nd thing to overcome will be monitoring, again you can monitor those input channels with your final mix on the x32. 3rd is the distance you can run the USB, usually you don't want to run that more then 15ft, so the computer with the DAW will need to be close to your mixer. It can be done, but there are a few more challenges.
