  • I've been making my living as an author since 2009, first in young adult traditional publishing, then indie romance novels, but my heart really dwells with a fantasy world I've been writing about since I was eleven. This is an introduction about where I've been and where I want to go, and I welcome everyone with creative dreams, a creative career, or an interest in my books to join me along the way!

It warms my heart to hear how people are able to not only write their stories, but publish and even make a living off those stories. I've been writing since a young age, but I've been working on two different stories for the past decade. Not sure if I'll even publish them, whenever I'm satisfied with one of my million drafts, but I'd like to at least be able to hold a physical copy of my books in my hands and be happy with it some day.

Your videos keep me inspired; it's like sitting down with a friend for morning coffee before setting off to my office to write. I've also found that for me, slowing down and focusing on JUST my writing, has been so beneficial for me. I stopped being concerned about how much money I was making, stopped regretting the two years I didn't write at all and lost my audience, and I am so productive this year. I'm writing about 1 book per month these days, and I only write from 1pm to 5pm (or til 4 if I get my 5K for the day sooner). I spend two weeks writing, one week editing and formatting, and in the evenings or mornings, as I'm motivated, I run FB ads, work on book covers, get the ISBNs, etc. Surprisingly, this works for me and I find myself planning, preparing, and writing from whenever I wake up until I go to bed at 1 or 2 am. I don't use alarm clocks. I'm very fortunate that my husband and I became building managers so our expenses are super low because everything is included as part of our job, and my husband's retirement income pays for phone, car, insurances, groceries, etc. The only thing I have to worry about is my credit card payment and every few years I take a job I hate for a few months and save up a year's worth of credit card payments to "buy time." 2021 was the last work-for-someone-else stint and according to my budget, I can focus solely on writing until April 2025.

it's all been too much of a whirlwind the last few decades, My life was always a bit of a whirlwind, The thing that stabilizes me are (my)children and my creative endeavors. As my eyes fade, the larynx was operated on, that even felt threatened. Throw in the divorce from hell, uber poverty, the pandemic, working for people who screwed me over and yet again losing 90% of what I owned, I really haven't done much but slowly at an amoebic pace dig myself out from the cairn of my life. Now, I'm drawing. Almost compulsively. Belong to groups for accountability. Almost ready to sit down and write again, it was far too painful, all the projects before the falling don't fit anymore, though some may still be timely, and I haven't figured out which graphic novel story I want to flesh out. Some of this has been talking myself out of my pity party-no one wants to see or hear from you, Agy, which I know isn't accurate, because when I do draw people DRAWN to it and me. The silly "fun facts" (my younger daughter has inherited that one, lol). Even as a wreck, people can bear me. So your honesty and channel gives me further girth. I'm even considering today recording some of my drawing process and putting it on my channel. Even if it just sits there, I'm okay with it, it's got me moving a little bit again. Truly, Thank you for sharing.

Just found your channel and I'm very excited! I'm working on my first book in a series of four. It's a romance, that was kind of inspired by Persuasion (because Jane Austen's second best book doesn't get enough attention). Anyway, I'm 65k words in and I think it's going well. I'm an interesting case study. I haven't wanted to be a writer since I was young, although I did try it out ONCE when I was a tween. It was like a copycat of Sweet Valley Twins. But for so long I've had these stories I wanted to tell and 18 months ago, I kicked myself in the bum and said, "I'm doing it!" So here we are. I don't think I ever will become a traditionally published author. I don't even think I'll continue to be one once these four are done. But it's about me and getting out the story I want to tell. I'll be ok if I never see a dime from it. I don't really have a day job, I'm a SAHM and a student. Can't wait to see how your journey evolves!

Welcome to CZcams! What a lovely video! Like you, I made fairy worlds when I was 11. But when my brother and cousin found my notebooks about them, I overheard them laughing at them. So I burned all of the notebooks. I'm a retired librarian. Since I retired, I have written two nonfiction books. But I've been bitten by the fiction bug, and now I'm writing a cozy women's paranormal fiction. It sounds like we have a lot in common! I started a CZcams channel a year ago. The editing does get easier. I wouldn't say I'm good at it yet, but I don't struggle like I did in the beginning. The same will happen for you with time. I think channels like yours are needed. I'm looking forward to learning from you! 🙂

Oh no! Your poor fairy notebooks! I was somewhat unusual in that I saved everything and my mom supported it, buying my sister and I both file cabinets and folders and helping us sort all our loose papers and such. I idolized other writers and loved their letters and diaries and such from a young age so I had this early idea that I would need an archive for my future biographers, haha...well, maybe it will turn out to be useful for my CZcams channel anyway. I love cozy paranormal and look forward to checking out your channel too! Libraries are my favorite places in the world. I have a cold today and am cozied up with my little stack from the local university library right now. (My husband and I go to university libraries for dates because they're open late!) Oh my god. I just discovered your 40 books in 4 years part 2 video, and you are so encouraging in your matter of fact approach to writing, and the sheer fact that you just dont give up. so i decided to watch more of your videos. And now I am having a massive geek out because I remember Magic Under Glass!! I gasped when you mentioned it because I have such a narrow pop culture reference base that I was confident you'd say you'd written something I'd never heard of. But I HAVE heard of it!
I was OBSESSED with Magic Under Glass when I was 15 or so, I constantly had it out from the library. My library never got the other books in and so i never got to read the whole series. Eventually I faded away because there is only so many times you can read the one book over and over (even Pride and Prejudice can't hold up under those conditions!).
And so life went on and I barely remember the plot now. I didn't even remember what it was called. But the beautiful cover and the feelings I got from reading it have always, always stuck in my mind. When you said the title i had this bout of instant recognition, and was finally able to look it up.
I can't believe this. I can't wait to track it down and read the whole series now!!!
So thank you for giving me such a wonderful experience--twice, I guess!!
(And thank you for your incredibly informative youtube channel!)
I would love to learn about this world youve created. Watching this video made me care about it!

I'm struggling with moving from day job (customer service) to a creative entrepreneurial thing, inclusing CZcams channel, monetizing my hobbies, and Tarot reading for clients... Stack that on top of the immense emotional loads of 1. Having to do decades of continuing therapy to heal from things, and 2. using all the rest of my emotional energy in a customer service job.... And 3. Realizing that even in my friendahips, all i do is hold emotional space for others rather than ... be me. Have fun...
And yes, atarting an entrepreneurial thing, especially with Tarot readings, can be more emotional space-holding, i got some advice lately from someone in the business that using using the natural and honed emotional skills i have IN THE PROPER CONTEXT that supports me better, i have more control over boundaries, and i actually enjoy the process of can help me stop over-sping it in other areas of my life and get my energy back for more "me- exploration."

I used to write prolifically when I was a kid/teenager and I always dreamed of being a professional writer. That dream seemed impractical, though, so I went on to do other things. I quit writing fiction and got busy with life.
Now I'm in my 40's and realizing I want to get back to writing. What once seemed like a wild dream now seems possible. I don't want to be at the end of my life thinking, "If only I had pursued that dream." I feel I'm at a crossroads where I *must* pursue my dream or face a terrible regret.
At my age, I'm thinking, if not now, when? While I suppose it's true that it's never "too late" to pursue a dream, our time here is not unlimited. If I've learned one thing over the years, it's that regret is one of the worst feelings one can have.
Last summer I started to put some stories on the page. But economic realities forced me back to my regular job. So I'm struggling to figure out how I can pay the bills and still write.
I know some authors will write for a few minutes here and there, or perhaps an hour a day, but I can't seem to work that way. I need large chunks of time.
So I'm planning and strategizing how to make it all work. I cannot accept defeat!
Looking forward to your next video. ❤

This is lovely. I’m currently a home-parent of a 5yo and 3yo, but I’ve held the dream of being a published fantasy writer since I was (you guessed it!!) eleven years old. (What IS it about that age??) I’ve gone back and forth over the decades, wrote a bunch of fairy world portal fantasy YA stuff and one big epic fantasy when I was a preteen; but since then, though I go through bouts of creative inspiration and worldbuilding, I’ve never been able to follow through on an original fiction fantasy.
I do write some good fanfiction though. I wrote a ton of fanfics for Harry Potter back in the day, including two big ones that I completed (the main one was around 80,000 words), but that was when I was around 19.
I very recently got obsessed with Fourth Wing and Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros, and daaamn if I haven’t been written by the fanfiction bug again!! My fanfic is already at over 50,000 words and I’ve been writing it since December. Plus I’m homeschooling my two kids full time so I only get one and a half writing days a week, and it’s not fully reliable that I do.
I’d love to get something published one day. Fantasy has always been my true love, so I feel you there.

I can feel your exhaustion as the Amazon algorithm is relentless. I can comfortably write 1 book/1 year in order to feel satisfied with it, but in 2021 I got into the cycle of rapid release knowing that the books I released every 3 months each took me 1 yr to write. I was on a hamster wheel knowing I was running on fumes. I was able to harness my productivity during lockdown and write 5 books but just doing that leveled me. Like you, I tried to write to market but even staying within the framework of the tried and true, I can't seem to keep the "quirky" out of my books. I love your thoughts on capitalism and the way it has undermined natural creative flow...it's one of my personal soapboxes but I'd be preaching to the choir so won't go on! Anyway -- I decided after publishing four books in a fairly short span of time (for me - one a month would KILL me 😆) that I wanted no part of the hustle and crush that 'indie success' seems to warrant. I decided to write at my own pace and in my own time and detach myself completely from the idea of 'being successful'. It was that, or quit publishing altogether and I don't think I'm ready for that (yet). Thanks so much for being transparent and sharing your experience thus far. I haven't ever read any of your books (sorry?) but, I find videos like this interesting, and listened to it all the way through. I'm an artist myself and find it hard to make stuff. I don't want to get lost only making stuff that would sell, I think it would make me stop creating. But I'm not sure even I would buy the stuff I make? It's frightening putting yourself out there and I don't have to because I decided to take a more secure job direction instead of pursuing art as a career, so now I'm just a coward towards my art, haha. I hope you get some traction on your series.

    • @lidiyafoxgloveauthor
      @lidiyafoxgloveauthor  Před 5 měsíci

I think if you have a secure job otherwise, there is validity in making art that is just sort of...brain dump maybe? Like you don't even have to like everything you make. Maybe it's good to make things with zero thought of their likability to anyone. It is eternally frightening, though. I used to think it would get easier once I'd achieved X and Y or maybe just got older and...haha, no.
But I'm really glad you enjoyed the video and I only expect a small overlap between CZcams and my books, honestly...

    • @lidiyafoxgloveauthor
      @lidiyafoxgloveauthor  Před 3 měsíci +2

I think it would be hard to publish them...very time consuming to get everything as high quality scans and then indie publishing is not great for pictures. I would probably only do it if I ended up with a large readership for the Hidden Lands books and could do a Kickstarter or something. But with that said, I do plan on making some videos flipping through the notebooks and sketchbooks, reading some selections, along with more videos talking about the world in-depth. The audience for this is smaller but I enjoy it SO much. I'm really glad there is some interest in this sort of thing.

Currently I write for a DnD campaign with my friends, its an episodic space adventure with a zany vibe in a future version of the world. It has a dystopian government but make it a little silly. Our last episode was a noire mystery night where they had to find the missing mayor of the lunar colony. They found him, and he was dead! So now they are on the hunt for the murder and they uncovered a cartel smugglers ring that they want to take down as well. I really want to write a fantasy story about a magical botanist who is a drunkard and nobody likes but they're naturally gifted and eventually they'll be the hero :) I really love your channel and I'm very excited to hear about your world, I also love the sound of your books I'll have to try one someday!

@lidiyafoxgloveauthor Thank you! Yeah this is a fairly silly campaign. We've basically accepted that it's a dating simulator with kaijus. I'm trying to learn how to write dialogue and characters better, it's been kinda hard getting into the right mindset.

@@21cormorants There will definitely be more art there soon. My plan for the year was basically...well, last November I mostly wrapped up selling off my father in law's estate and a the resulting big creative hiatus. Then it was:
      1. Finishing the draft of my next novel.
      2. Starting the YT channel and getting into the swing of at least one weekly video.
      3. Finishing the novel edits.
      4. Getting back into a regular routine with art.

I went and looked on Amazon to pick up one of your books and the prices are kind of all over the place. Most of the books don't have a kindle version, one of the paperbacks is listed at $600. Are you maybe selling on a different platform? Where do I find your books?

What country are you in? Are you looking for my YA novels under Jaclyn Dolamore or my Lidiya Foxglove novels? I'm not sure what you're seeing because as far as I know, the only one not available in ebook is my YA novel Magic Under Stone, aside from some books I have pulled from sale that may still show a paperback (you can't ever pull a paperback listing from sale).
The Sorcerer's Concubine also shows up oddly because I originally published under Jaclyn Dolamore and sold the audiobooks to Tantor. Then years later I did some rewriting of the books and republished them as Lidiya. Tantor changed the audiobook names but because I had done some rewriting, Amazon will no longer link them and they still show up in search under Jaclyn, but they are available as ebooks and paperbacks under Lidiya.
Sorry for that epic explanation, but anyway, everything should be there but if you let me know what you want & you're still having trouble, I can figure it out. I appreciate you looking up the books!

@@21cormorants If you just publish with Amazon then they will not reveal your name anywhere and they will send you tax documents for any and all pen names to your real name (at least for US, I assume this is true everywhere though). It gets more complicated if you go wide. I think Apple might be the one that reveals your name, and if you create a website that will be registered as your real name. At this point you would need to speak to someone about creating some sort of business to maintain privacy.
I have a video planned for April about my biggest failures that will get into changing & pulling books.
