    Today we discuss:
    1) Check your track routing;
    2) What's the difference between WASAPI Shared & WASAPI Exclusive?
    3) ASIO drivers

    I was hoping I would find a fix for this Cakewalk error...........
    "Cakewalk audio driver error the following driver either do not support the current audio format or are in use by another application...."
    I'm just trying to connect a Yamaha PSR-e373, and was told I had to use MME 32bit, though I also tried WASAPI and ASIO too.
    Google says reduce the sample quality to 16bit, I tried, and it didn't work. After a couple of hours I gave up and accepted that I wasted $250. I wish music software was just plug n play, you know.

    • @JimmyFlame
      @JimmyFlame Před 2 lety

      Hey there! Sorry to hear about that. Did you download the right Yamaha driver for the keyboard? If not, you can find it here: usa.yamaha.com/products/musical_instruments/keyboards/portable_keyboards/psr-e373/downloads.html
      You’ll need to install the Yamaha driver before opening Cakewalk.
      Also… with Yamaha keyboards I’m pretty sure you have to set the controls to “Local” if you’re trying to send a signal to a DAW. To activate, first plug in your USB ports, and then press the “Function” button a few times on the keyboard until the screen on the keyboard says “Local”.
      Next, try these steps:
      Open Cakewalk then open Preferences. Make sure other applications that use audio are not running (players, browsers, etc).
      In Preferences, go to Audio and make sure output is set to Speakers, and if available the input set to Line (or something similar). In Playback and Recording, where you tried WASAPI, etc., this should be set to the type of driver you want the DAW to use for PLAYBACK AND RECORDING not necessarily the keyboard (I use WASAPI Exclusive personally. MME 32 isn’t very fast and causes noticeable latency, though might have to use it to engage the Yamaha midi. So try MME first like you already have).
      Next, scroll down to Midi -> Devices, and make sure the Yamaha is selected under Input. Unselect the Yamaha as output (preventing a signal from going back through the keyboard).
      Make sure you click Apply then Close.
      Next, add an INSTRUMENT TRACK (not audio). In the Instrument tab click SI-Piano and the output should be Omni. A piano patch will be created (this is where the midi recitation comes from). Once track is created, double-click the little keyboard logo on the left side of the track name. A keyboard window will pop up. You don’t need this open to play the keyboard but it’s always good to get a visual of the VST you’re wanting to engage.
      Let me know if this works.

    Hello.
    Do you have a video showing a way to use the sounds directly from my keyboard? I don't like any of the midi options and it's just simpler for me to be able to record what is actually in the sound bank of my keyboard. How would I go about that?

    • @JimmyFlame
      @JimmyFlame Před 2 lety

      Currently no. But it’s something we’ve thought about doing. Getting sound from your keyboard to your DAW is pretty easy. However, you’ll need an analog input (such as a Mackie interface) and then use that as the input to your track. Much like you would with a microphone. So check your keyboard for a) analog outputs or b) a way to send an analog signal via USB, as the USB is probably just sending MIDI signals. Pretty sure your keyboard will have instructions somewhere on how to do that.

    • @JimmyFlame

      Could be a routing or assignment issue. Check your midi configuration to make sure midi is being sent from your keyboard at Preferences > MIDI > Devices.
      Also, when you drag/drop a midi instrument into the timeline, make sure to check boxes that say Simple Instrument Track and Enable Midi Output. I don't mess with the Ask Me Everytime box (doesn't have anything to do with sound but make sure it's checked).
      Oh and also, make sure the track you have has an instrument assigned to it.

      Go through your driver sequence and make sure nothing has changed. Make sure no other apps are controlling your sound, especially if you’re using ASIO drivers as they only allow one source at a time to play. Try different drivers in Cakewalk. Sometimes an update either from your OS or Cakewalk itself will change settings including sound settings without alerting you. So just go through the settings and make sure nothing has changed.

    • @JimmyFlame
      @JimmyFlame Před 2 lety

      There’s a couple ways to fix that. First, if your mic has a dedicated headphone output just plug your headphones directly into it and monitor from there. Make sure your track is registering a signal too. Second, if your mic doesn’t have a dedicated headphone out, check the track’s meter to verify it’s receiving a signal. If it is, turn monitoring on for that track. Keep in mind you’ll likely hear an echo or delay because you’re in WASAPI shared.

    • @JimmyFlame
      @JimmyFlame Před 2 lety

      Oh, and verify that your input signal in the track is set to receive from your microphone. Cakewalk doesn’t necessarily automatically detect where a signal is coming from. At least not all the time. So yeah, under the record button in the track you’ll see an in and out option. Click “in” and choose from there. If you don’t see the in/out options, drag to expand the track window.

    I own a Korg Kronos and have been using it with Cakewalk Sonar for four years. This month, I bought a Korg Pa5X, but even with the latest Korg driver installed, Cakewalk isn't seeing Pa5X on the MIDI device list. In fact, NONE of my audio and MIDI software on Windows 10 detects the Pa5X. The only thing I can do is transfer files back and forth to the Pa5X' internal drive from my PC.
    Upon closer look, the new driver does not support Pa5X, so it looks like Windows users are screwed.

    In Cakewalk the looping of tracks sounds flawless on playback, but on export it glitches upon the start of the loop. I've tried the add a fade in/out in audacity etc but still get a slight click, highly annoying, as I realise it's the square wave and clipping from the end and start of the audio, any Pro tips to get rid of this glitching to create a seamless loop would be much appreciated. It's for an android app as well. so they are quite small files, usually 100kB to 1MB at most on export.👍

    • @JimmyFlame
      @JimmyFlame Před 2 lety +1

      What bitrate are you using? WASAPI drivers have had issues in Cakewalk running over 44hz. Also, check your recording buffers/sampling in Shared. Shared mode allows the drivers to be used by more than one source, which is ideal for mixing. So… the good thing is as long as Exclusive is operating normally for recording, you should be able to use the less CPU intensive Shared mode for mixing. Another thing you can do is check the “Suspend Audio Engine when Cakewalk is Not in Focus” box. Has nothing to do with input, but it could free up more CPU on playback especially if other windows are open.
      Try all that. Let me know.

    • @JimmyFlame
      @JimmyFlame Před 2 lety +2

      Ohhh one more thing. If you’re using an interface. Make sure the interface is set as the default Windows device as well. Do it in Windows Sound settings and make sure the bitrates for input and output are set to the exact bitrate in Cakewalk.

    • @JimmyFlame
      @JimmyFlame Před 2 lety +1

      Cool. One other thing to check is the Output routing from WASAPI Shared. Sometimes the routing changes in Cakewalk (for whatever reason) when switching drivers. Also, when in Shared mode, is the input track receiving a signal but you just can’t hear it? If so it’s likely the speaking routing. Keep me posted!

      256 should default, increase by X 2 to 512, see if that does it. Keep in mind that increasing buffer will increase latency, which is what’s likely causing the robot sound. You can choose a bit rate when opening a new song. 44.1 khz is the default. But you have sound and the robotic sound from your mic sounds like a buffer issue. Try this. Open your Record buffer setting and increase the buffer size for recording. Default is 256, double that or double whatever Record buffer size you already have. Note: increasing buffer size also increases latency. So do it incrementally. Also, turn off monitoring for the vocal track and use your interface to monitor the vocal take. Try all that. It should take care of the “robot” voice.

      Wow. Double check your sends and try turning off track monitoring. Sounds like you have audio bleeding happening somewhere in your routing. But then again, it’s recording to an unarmed track. So, check your interface routing or whatever you’re using to get audio to the DAW. Try recording to a third armed track too with the others unarmed. See if it sends to track 2 or 1, or both. Really strange that Cakewalk is recording audio to unarmed tracks. Could be a bug that was picked up from a plug-in too. Worst case, do a complete reinstall. At least that’s what I’d do. I know, annoying. But tracks should not be recording at all when unarmed.

    So much miss information. ASIO is only for use with a proper driver supplied by the manufacture of a proper audio interface. You need to deal with your audio as all through the video there is crackling of the playback.

    I use a usb mic and when I switch to an asio driver cakewalk tells me that its incompatible and it switches me to wasapi. Anyone know how I can fix this?

      Couple things… not knowing what mic you’re using… if applicable, make sure your mic driver is up to date. Might as well check mic routing while you’re at it. Also, if your mic is routed through an interface like a Mackie Onyx or a virtual interface, check for compatibility and check the settings to make sure it’ll communicate w/ ASIO. Pretty much all up-to-date drivers have ASIO and you shouldn’t have to do much except double-checking the settings.
      Lastly, there’s nothing wrong with recording in WASAPI mode. Try it in WASAPI-Exclusive first.
      Also… does ASIO record/playback other instruments properly when the mic isn’t hooked up?
      In the future, always include your system specs and instrument info when troubleshooting. What I gave you are some general fix ideas.
