This time around I'm playing the intro and outro pieces. The intro is "McMarch Reprise" and the "Variations on a Theme by Paul David's". And yes, that's me playing the piano behind the keyboard section as well. They are the chord changes to Jackson Browne's "Dark and Silent Gate".
For years people have been asking me to make a studio tour video so....here you go. I hope you like it.
Thanks for watching.
All the best,
Keith
A very special "thank you" to my "super friends" on Patreon:
Perry M.
Bill S.
Piush D. - Hudba
Dude, I hope someone at PBS or the History Channel comes across your channel because I could hear you narrating historical documentaries or specials. You have a voice for doing voice overs. Cool studio btw
Totally. Could narrate anything. Great presence.
Thanks guys
I swear we were separated at birth Keith. The moment you said “John Cleese”, my mind played “And now for something completely different” a split second before the video did, Lol. Very cool room too. I had no idea that much “tech” went into it, but then again I should’ve known. Your videos have high production values!
This is seriously the most Zen channel I've ever come across, not just in music, but in life. When you are focused on a goal you see things more clearly, and therefore you use what you need and get rid of what you don't need. You repurpose anything around you like an LED screen or a lit sign for extra lighting and get everything serving the one purpose. I'm not a believer in multitasking, as I believe the definition of multitasking is doing many things at once, poorly. But there are times in which we don't have a choice. The Zen way to do many things is do them one at a time, one after the other. So write an outline for an episode, write the script, organize the gear you will use and film the gear you will use, then get in front of the camera and film, then edit. Do things in a linear way, and you will see how much faster and more efficiently a project comes to completion. I like Keith's methods. There is great thought involved here, not just for musicians, but for organizing life.
I appreciate your attention to detail in explaining your purchase decisions in a smaller space
I grew up in Syracuse, my family was there for 3 generations prior. Most of my friends can't wait to leave, but I always thought it was charming in many areas. Many fond memories of heading to columbus bakery every Sunday morning, and I'm happy to see someone speak positively about the area in general. Even seeing the style of your place on the hallway shot was nostalgic, super comfy!
Inspiringly organised. I've also just purchased a Strandberg partly after noticing yours. My hand pain has cleared up completely in a few week's, so I couldn't be happier with the purchase. Thanks for all the great content.
Keith you are only a couple years younger than me but you are a LIGHT YEAR ahead of me when it comes to your knowledge of gear and computers. Hats off to you, Sir.
Beautiful clarity, focused on the why behind EACH piece of gear. The sensibilities about the subtleties of lighting and miking and baffling are key and can probably be the only thing needing much more emphasis. But that could be a whole how-to series on simple audio and video recording techniques and considerations.
I thought this was going to be so boring but it turned out to be one of my favorite videos. Totally loved it so much, so welcoming and in a language and culture that feels like home. Thank you for inviting me in.
Always a great watch. Thanks
Awesome! Thank you for this!!!
This was so good. Motivating as well. Thank you for doing it.
I could happily listen to you explain the detail of anything.
Another great one . Thank you for more knowledge and your wisdom
you've got a really good thing going and I always look forward to your excellent videos
fantastic video, thank you 5WW!
Thank you for the top notch quality of your up loads. Stellar content, good sir.
thanks Keith! wonderful content
Superb👍🏻👍🏻 great tour
Very clear and in-depth, as always of course.
Thank you for your insightful videos
Thanks, Keith! Wonderfully insightful - much appreciated.
Excellent video as always Keith.
Love the work you're doin here, bud. :)
Cool setup! I love spaces with a super quick work flow. Cool to see how other people do it!
Great video on your set up . Precise and interesting . Thx Keith
Thank you for a glimpse into the void. Great work Keith!
Great video Keith!!! I love seeing all of the studios! Thank you very much!!!
Awesome stuff! Thanks ! Love this channel. 🤘🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you for sharing the gear and techniques behind your impressive videos.
Love the episode and tour of your studio, everything is well thought out, which I would expect nothing less from you! I look forward to more great inspirational episodes to inspire me to do more with less!
As always, nicely done Keith. Thanks for the glimpse into your gear life.
Fantastic video Keith! Absolutely love it!
Truefire is amazing. Thanks for introducing them to me.
Excellent episode. Very informative.
Thanks for posting, Keith. 🙂
I always enjoy watching behind-the-scenes videos like this. Great setup Keith, it really seems to work for you.
I don’t understand any of the technology and can only be envious of your knowledge. Love the “simplicity” and feel of your rooms. I don’t know anything about your life - other than the channel - but it feels like your living a life that you want, and enjoy. Godspeed.
Great behind the scenes video! Thank you Keith, for all your work. Always entertaining and informative!
Great great video Keith. Love it.
Spectacular video.
Thank you for getting so specific and granular. It’s great to have these details. Your videos are excellently produced and written. You are a great storyteller and teacher.
Really like what you do! Inspiration to scale down and be more productive.
Simple yet functional as I would expect from you. I won’t be recording but love the set up
Great Stuff! I always learn something new from every video. Keep up the fantastic work on music gear & history coverage. Thanks for all you do!
I want to thank you so much, your video is very informative, and produced on very professional level.
Great video Keith, a real neat setup! Just bought the all access pass!
Thank you for sharing a “behind the scenes” view. It was something that filled in a lot of blanks related to how you get good quality.
This was a great video. I think this will be very helpful as I’m redoing my entire setup (again). It’s a tough line to walk between functional and visually appealing.
Love the set up, and mindfulness regarding cost. Your content is truly appreciated from all the guitar community, and it's amazing to be a part of it. Congrats on finding a beautiful home, and a YT channel that is so rewarding. Loving your work is the ultimate blessing.
Outstanding video Keith! I've always been impressed with the quality of your audio and video. It's very professional looking and sounding, and now I know how you do it. Keep up the great work!
I love the logic and organization of your studio, as well as the design theory. I too love the YT studio tours - I binge watch them about once a month. I've done a couple on my channel but I don't change gear that often!
That forever acoustic with wood from your old place and all the other personal touches is amazing!
Great video, I loved hearing about your audio/video gear and setup. Also cool to hear you play some irish music, I've been playing that style for many years. As always, great content.
What a fantastic video have a wonderful day Keith
Excellent video. I’d love to hear more about that beautiful custom made “forever” acoustic.
I also just purchased a victory VC 35 and so looking forward to it.
Truly enjoyed the video, thank you for sharing your space.
A most excellent video Keith! I've been working on my studio room for years.. seems like a never ending process... always just a reach way from being complete! Thanks for the inspiration and showing us how it's done! 🤘🎸😎🐦
I absolutely adore this channel. Informative, and more importantly cost effective music content is absolutely something we need more of. And, I must confess, you’re a dead ringer of my grandfather - he’s a biology teacher up here in Scotland, and I’ve always found that kind of humorous.
I learned so much from watching your episodes . Thank you. 🎸 ✌
This so hit the spot - really - 18 minutes of nerding out - I loved it. Thank you. PS - in regards to the TrueFire line, is it bad that as opposed to “instead of” shopping for another guitar I hear “in conjunction with”?😂
You mean like "while shopping for another guitar...maybe...just maybe...take some lessons"? I like the approach. Very soft sell.
Thank you Keith your videos are an inspiration to me. I already wanted to be a minimalist. But your videos help me stay grounded and not give into temptation to buying new gear. I enjoy that I have what I need to get the sounds in my head and nothing more. It’s like having a collection but only keeping your favorites.
Sweet! This was awesome 🙂
So interesting - thanks Keith. Especially loved your parting note on content over production with Zac's example. But - beyond the great research - I wanted to give a massive shout out to your audio quality. As you said, this is truly what makes a video watchable, and well worth spending the effort (and, yes, money) on. One could put up with 720p phone video with a warm, clear voice track!
Keith, your straightforward, informative style is why I (and I think others) like your channel. But your level of transparency, like in this video, just takes my fandom to a greater level. Congrats. I wish you continued success in your pursuits.
First of all, awesome. I love these kind of videos. I love getting behind the scenes and looking at everything that other established folks have. But, seems like lots of stuff. 🤔😃
Nice setup Keith! You definitely like "order" in your Five Watt World. Well done and most of all, I really enjoy seeing you guesting and commenting on other player's channels and chats.
Keith I always enjoy your videos and your dry wit! This was a very informative video about the audio capture and video lighting you use. Glad you found a new house with features you need and use. The explanation and the difference between the "least amount of gear" does not necessarily mean "little gear" is so true! I own a sound and lighting production Co. and teach sound in churches. Sometimes "less is MORE" applies definitely to live audio to an ever moving "bull's eye" that we strive to hit each time. Again, thanks for all your wisdom!
Bravo, Keith! You've made me want to finally get my ass in gear and make my basement "music area" (which is really barely-controlled chaos of synths, guitars, pedals, amps, and rando recording shit, like that green Joe Meek compressor sitting idle on my bookshelves) a proper studio. And I'm not surprised that Zac gets so much out of his simple rig- he's a Tele Guy through-and-through, after all!
Man you definitely have an inspiring life.
It's a great looking space and setup Keith! I enjoyed your piano playing too.
You’re very kind.
Hey Keith, thanks for the tour! Thanks to you, amongst a few others, I have begun "thinning the herd", selling off kit that aren't quite 100%, things that I have a love-hate feeling towards. As much as I miss some of my "toys", there is liberation as well.
Thanks Keith - as a gear nerd I love these "under the hood" videos too!
Lovely video! For what it’s worth, breedlove still makes a few lines of guitars in Oregon, but many of their guitars are overseas. My favorite acoustic I’ve ever played is my Oregon concerto with Myrtlewood back and sides. It’s a cannonball without being boomy like my all mahogany J15. It strikes a balance of volume and harmonics that’s truly a delight to play out and record! Very interested to see your HX effects. I’ve had a helix for about 4.5 years and it’s such a great tool! It’s always a pleasure to watch your videos. Keep up the good work!
Dang, so cool!
Great video.
Thanks for the idea of using a keyboard stand with butcher block as a desk. I do a lot of writing at my desk and really struggle to find ones that have good stability and the right amount of leg space and will fit in an odd space. This was the perfect solution for surprisingly small amount of money. Thanks!
You’ve done a lot with less. That’s a great approach in more ways than one Kieth.
I really appreciate your videos!
Thank you for continuing to put out great content.
Thanks!
Thoughtful studio Keith! Very nice!!
Love the videos Keith, easily one of the top 5 music/guitar channels on CZcams. Hope to see lots more! Thanks!
Thanks!
Watching your video is like sitting by a fireplace with a cup of coffee
That's one of the nicest compliments I've ever had I think. Thanks Matthew.
I've come to really like the look of Strandbergs. Only so much you can do with models that have been around since the 50's with a plethora of copies around, they're a nice modern twist. Hope to try one out someday.
Thanks for sharing all this Keith. I've been upping my own video game. So there's a whole new skillset to develop. Info like yours helps.
I’ve been watching some of your videos lately actually. Good stuff. Stay in touch.
I grew up in Fulton. I bet we know some of the same people that are musicians in upstate NY. All the best. I love the channel!!
Ok grew up way out in Lyons.
This was a great video, I have little background in recording and this was incredibly informative 👏 👍.
You forgot to add 'EPIC' to the title.
And finally I'm watching a studio tour that truly vibrates with me. Even all the musicians' studio tour looked more like they were halfway to becoming a big producer's setup. On the other hand, unlike all those other videos, admit it, you instead splurged on that rare commodity called space, having two rooms dedicated to music/video making. Thanks for sharing!
So now we know how you do it, I always thought your video's were crisp but I have to admit I didn't know what half of the things were! I used to shoot peoples portraits so I did admire your lighting setup I used to use one light and three reflectors. Once you go down the rabbit hole of gear then things can get out of control, as you are probably only too aware.
Thanks for sharing this with us.
In the thick of our new home remodel... its been awhile since checking in with 5WW. Thanks for the studio tour Keith. Meticulous enjoyment for me, especially the details. Blessings to you my friend
Thanks David
I am from Syracuse and went to college at Ithaca! We should grab a beer when I come back to visit my folks.
Although your whole presentation is great, your audio is fantastic. I always wondered how you got that intimate, close mic'ed sound with so little room ambience yet had no mic in sight. Now I know. Learn new things every day.
Great video as always, even if it's not really about guitars 🙂
Very cool that you're in the Syracuse area! I went to SU and spent many years in the city. I had my Martin D18 serviced by the good folks at Ish Guitars recently. Now I'm in the Watertown area playing as many gigs as I can stand around Lake Ontario and the 1,000 Islands region! Nice to see something of a digital music scene being produced from Upstate, NY!
I'm not sure if it's previously been mentioned, but the overdrive sound you mentioned makes quite a bit of sense, since it's adding a small amount of compression before the stomp. It may very well feel more natural since tube amps also slightly compress the signal. Thanks, blessed OD's!
I recognized the Lord of the Rings on CD unabridged, sitting nicely on your bookshelf about gear. I can relate.
Thanks for all your videos. They are excellent.
Well hello there in Syracuse NY. In Watertown NY here... LOL, Thanks for the tour. Building out a music space for recoding and rehearsing my solo act up here in the North and always appreciate the new perspective. This was inspiring to say the least. Clicking subscribe now!
Welcome to five watt world Phil.
Not sure why I watched this entire video but found it very interesting and informative. Love your channel !!
Thanks John
From Leo: congratulations on the new place. It is nice to have room to work.
Hi to you and Leo. Hope you’re both well.
Nicely done. Greetings from Cambridge, England.
Cool! thanks for that.
Keith? In honor of "the most with the least" and admiration for Mr. Cleese... and your work...
Brilliant Keith! Absolutely Brilliant!!!
Love this!! Great work!
Thanks Shawn
Hi there, Tubbs. 🙂
Always enjoy watching your video’s. Syracuse, that’s awesome my wife and I were born and raised there, now we live in Southern Maryland, but we do still have family there and visit often (just not in the winter). Hope we might meet sometime maybe shopping at a Wegmans or the Dinosaur BBQ. 🤗
