- Dave Matthews - Live 3/20/1992 at JMU "Cool Aid" benefit concert.
This is one of the earliest known video recordings of a DMB show.
Shot at James Madison University at the PC Ballroom 3/20/1992 at part of a benefit for Mercy House.
I shot this on a good quality (for 1992) Canon L1 Hi-8mm (standard definition) video camera with PCM stereo audio. De-interlaced, black level adjusted, and mastered using 264 compression at 1280 x 960 with highest quality output settings (in Final Cut Pro).
Thanks to copperpot5 for advice on how to best render this for CZcams.
Setlist:
00:00 Ants Marching (great Dave scatting around 3:25)
04:29 Warehouse
11:14 Lover Lay Down
17:01 The Song That Jane Likes
20:23 Dancing Nancies
26:11 Recently (Starts with riff from "Norwegian Wood") - tape cuts off part way through
Thanks to Adam Pierce and "otsegoflake" for helping with the set list.
Cheers! - Terry Harrison. - Hudba
They still play it the saaaaammme....they still play it the saaaaaaame waaaayy!
Sooooo, glasses guy is me. Couple things:
1) That’s the best I can dance. Then and now. White man curse.
2) can’t for the LIFE of me remember who the girl is.
3)camera is on me because I would get into the shows early and help set up to avoid paying cover (and get beer before I turned 21, think the statute of limitations is up on that). Native Charlottesville-ian, got to know the band early and would see them every chance I could. Could see Tim Reynolds and TR3 at Jokers as well with only 15-20 people in there. Full circle, my son is a protege of John Dearth and gets to play with him (pre-COVID) at Miller’s, where so much of the DMB ethos started.
that's amazing!!!
Damn!!!
But did you get the girl? Only the important questions.
salute to you, Legend
my man was in the trenches spittin game during warehouse.
Dave Matthews Band is one of the most talented bands ever
The evolution of Dave's voice will never cease to amaze me. From this to the vocals on Under the Table... That vocal coach should be a millionaire.
Nuwanda - Not sure when Robert started but I know he’s a bad ass
His vocals are clearly blown here. He’s not 100 percent. And I Could be wrong I suppose, but David never had any consistent vocal training. His voice changes over the years have long been talked about. And everybody has their favorite era. Many will say they like his voice the most between 91 and 94. Some will say 98-2000. But nobody believes it has gotten better or worse, it has just been a natural progression of change for dave. The only thing one could point too that could of had a big effect on his vocals was when he stopped smoking around 2005. For some singers, in the immediate year or two after quitting, their vocals actually suffer. But the main thing that is noticeable today, and for prob the last 10 years or so, is stamina. His vocals will get blown out, and it is tougher these days for him to recover. So he may go an entire show with rough vocals. But over the last couple years it seems like he is creating sets that don’t ruin his vocals. I. E hasn’t played time bomb for quite some time. He has been a little more cautious in that respect lately.
true allgood
@@vn8375 I dont think its songs with high vocal parts/screaming parts that slowly degraded his voice, i think its stuff like 3:20 in this video here he used to do a lot in his early career. Yeah I guess it's still "screaming" but it's bad form screaming. His screaming in songs like bartender in the early 2000s are actually with good form. Both sound badass but one will destroy your voice.
oh Leroy, such a beautiful sax......love this song....and miss your magic!
Thanks for the positive feedback. It's really heart warming, especially as this video went public here only this morning. It makes me wonder how many of you have been watching it at work. :)
The fact that Carter still had such a massive drum set all the way back then blows me away.
Carter had already been a drummer on tv in NYC prior to DMB
@@mrdrh99he was the studio drummer for BET
...blown away by the historicity of it all...whoa...Long Live DMB!!!! I'm left under the table and dreaming....
They should zoom in more.
You should travel back to 1992 and tell the guy that.
davefan 16. AWESOME!
Bahahahahaha
omfg how are people so funny, that was perfect
😁😆😅😂🤣
He's so young! That's crazy! Obviously we all get older, but it's just amazing seeing Dave play just as good then!
The people in the had no clue how big DMB was going to be, I would treasure this memory forever.
BackdaPack who gives a shit. Most of the people that were old enough to be at this show are about to die. Your forever is fucking short. Dickhead!
Thanks "TheTerryHarrison" for posting this incredible piece of history! :) DMB fans are super grateful!
At any given moment, Carter is demonstrating his amazing ability to absolutely rip it up and play the most entertaining drums while perfectly serving the music.
It's as simple as that...haha! :p
I was there! I was right up front although I couldn't find myself. I have the poster from the event framed! I was 19 years old..dont do the math:) First time I ever saw Dave and yes I remember every minute of it! I only wish the video showed those special Boyd and Dave moments. Still seeing the band today. Just saw them at Virginia Beach on Father's Day. I worked at the college radio station WXJM and this was our fund raiser. Little did was know how big this band was going to be.
Damn, thank God for the video camera! My mom was a huge fan in college, so it isn't too surprising that I started seeing the band when I was about 11. Insane to think this was ten years before I was even born! Now I'm going to see them in West Palm with my two best friends and partner for my 21st. Oh, how the time flies. Thanks for the footage!
First saw DMB on some morning show early 90’s while flipping the channels at the beach…
I remember getting a massive splinter under my middle fingernail on the old wooden porch (*that should be a song) and seeing DMB on that show playing Ants Marching…. They were introduced as a new band… that’s all I remember from that trip. Been a huge fan ever since! Saw them live FINALLY in 2003 after I got married, and I try and go every year now!
Best of what’s around….
JMU! Closest thing we had when I was there was when OAR rolled through Wilson Hall when I was a sophomore. Or maybe when Dave Chappelle came by same year to do stand-up, pre-Chappelle-Show. Either way, it would have been cool to be there 8-9 years earlier to see this.
Carter is on point in this video as well. Top 5 drummer of all time, all time.
this is crazy! i was a freshman and walked by the ballroom that night. who knew they were on the verge of world domination! carter is too freakin dorable! rip leroi.
Finding this video was like opening a time capsule - this is pure gold for a long time fan. An iconic band. It’s awesome to watch this and to listen to how the band has transformed it’s sound while keeping true to the songs, lyrics, and performance. Dave’s dancy performance style, leg kicking, lyrical free-styling, and footwork hasn’t change much over the last 30 years. I’ve got this video saved.
Finally found a recording of this. I lucked into seeing them play that night & have been a huge fan since. Even at my age I am still a DMB follower!!! Thanks for sharing.
Ashley Swindle noo way!!! Wow that’s amazing. You’re so lucky
That was awesome...Dang, sooo young...it's been a get to know a young dave day...just watched Boyhood....
This is great!! Thanks for sharing! Love the turtleneck!! Dude was dressed for a snow storm
Showing my age because I have been looking for any recording of this because I lucked into seeing this event & have been a huge fan since. Thanks for sharing this & bringing back great memories!
Dave sort of looks like Tom Hanks back in the Bosom Buddies days. Awesome find, thanks for posting. Can't wait until July DMB in Hartford.
Keyboards for DMB back then was Peter Griesar. Played with them through '93 or so.
LOVE LOVE LOVE - Thanks for sharing! This is where it all started for me! Loved Dave then, love Dave now! #JMU95 #ZTA #fillsmysoul
Somehow just discovered this video now. Unreal how polished this show was for how early it was.
The sound mix was off, but otherwise I agree
Been listening since 1993!!! Forever a DMB fan.
I knew..i just knew...they had something...very very good..i was 24 at this show. By myself...
Thank you for posting! Sincerely!
Awesome! Anything DMB is always welcomed on CZcams!
man.. the nostalgia.. the corduroy baggy pants.. the flannel..
So far ahead of their time back then. All master musicians. Stefan is ridiculously amazing and is so dang solid...never wavers. He and Carter play like they'd been together forever. You can hear the evolution of the band as a unit.....as they played more together, we got all this incredibly amazing music. Thank goodness these paths crossed!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING! I wonder if these people at this show know how lucky they are to have been there!
It’s really amazing how different and great they were at such a young age.
It's cool to hear the early sound of some songs. Slight variations but it's there.
WOW!! Been a fan since 93' and it's great to go back in time with Dave with a click!! Some talented individuals in the beginning, Great to see how much they've grown together over the years.
This is quite a treasure. Big thanks for sharing.
Damn. JMU PC Ballroom 1992: DMB. PC Ballroom 2002: World Culture 102... On the other hand, this is one of the best recordings of Song That Jane Likes I've heard though.
Thank you so so so much for this!
Wow! What a piece of history!
I was lucky to see DMB around this time for $5 at Trax in C'ville. I went reluctantly & told the girl who invited me, "I dont watch bands I've never heard of" lol. I grew up down the road from his house & knew the prior owners. Since then sometimes see him at the local deli or gas station...definitely at big concerts now. My daughter had hospital play DMB while in a recent coma. Good to be alive!
GlobalGood, Indeed it is good to be alive. Glad you enjoyed this. Do you recall hearing the DMB while in the coma?
@@terryharrison1739 no, but I don't recall anything for that matter. Just wild & crazy dreams. The hospital also played jazz since they'd said it's good for healing brain injury. Perhaps DMB is better!
Great document. Thanks for the upload! Can hear Carter very well here ;-)
Awesome recording! Thank you! I saw U2 in 1981 at the Hollywood Palladium: raw, gritty and a lot of energy. Dave and the boys delivering the same here.
Excessive zooming is a common mistake when people start recording concerts, but this is another level 🤯
I wasn't at this concert but wow this brings back memories. I remember seeing them at JM's a lot (we were at JM's like 5 days a week senior year). The band area was tiny. The crazy part was that they just seemed like another band with all of the great talent there like Full Stop and Everything. Either way this stirs awesome memories.
It also makes me glad that I was at school when cell phones didn't exist. The downside is that makes me old but you've got to get old sometime.
This is perfect. Wow thank you so much. Plaid Jacket, Turtleneck, Sweatpants...YES
thanks so much for posting this, very very cool!
That guy with his hands in his pockets didn't have a clue how lucky he was to be standing where he was.
Thank you for sharing this... this is GOLD! 🙌
This is such great footage, zoomed in or not. Stefan was so young, but truly the talent shines through. I actually love it zoomed in, especially watching Stefan on the bass. Carter around 22:15!! Someone was really crushing on Dave...for the entire The Song That Jane Likes was on his face. Ha!
Loved this video! All the best!!
Wow, this is a great upload. Some of my Fave Dave songs, and sounds like some of the earliest footage I’ve ever heard. Thanks for uploading!!!!
4 days after the first show
Good lord. JMU. What an incredible time!
roi on lover lay down brings me to tears!
Omg this is incredible man, thank you so much for this footage!
Jim Beaux, Thanks! We didn’t have any image stabilization back then and when shooting from the front of the stage I was getting bumped into quite a bit (which you see when I’m zoomed in). The band didn’t mind when I hopped on stage to film, which let me get a few different perspectives, without getting in the way. Glad you enjoyed it.
Whoever is responsible for this video is genius! Wow.
thanks take care
Holy cow. What a gem this is. Well done.
Awesome. In peak normal times.
Dave's voice was so much higher naturally back then. So cool to hear
Thank God for Carter. The band wouldn’t be what it is without him.
This is making my Friday.....
How many folks spilled out onto The Quad afterwards for late night Madison antics...
Awesome! I miss it oh so much!
Thank you so much for capturing this epic piece of history!
Brian you are right about the times have changed but I still love seeing them. It brings back great memories & creates new ones. I have met so many people through out the years & years & so many of us have become very close friends & all meet up at least once a year for a DMB concert. You should join us next time. I just returned from Charlottesville for a 2 night event & had a great time. I
very cool.. I have quite a few of your early recordings
Loved it all, but especially the sneakin of Norwegian Wood bass-intro to Recently.
I'd challenge anyone to post an earlier live show than this! In current terms DMB is right there with PJ for longevity. Darn good post! OH and REM!
This. Is. Amazing. Thanks so much for sharing!
OMG...I was at this show! Boyd was playing in his own band at the time at a club called Valentinos, before joining. When he joined DMB, their sound was upgraded.
What?! We’re you really At this show? You are sooooo lucky
This is absolutely incredible
love that little guitar!
Wow. I don't know the person who posted this but my Husband produced this show at JMU. It was in the Student Union. Great!!!! This appeared on my Facebook feed. Thanks for posting!
Classic DMB! Little did they know they were about to become legends.
thanks for this great post. I hav never seen such an early recording. I wonder how many people realized that they were witnessing the best live band ever. 35 concerts and it never gets old. I need a Dave fix now but Alabama is too far.
Watching this, I would have never predicted that they would become what they have....
FANTASTIC!!!!! Love this!!!
Thank you for posting this! This is great!
Dancing Nancies without Boyd. Fascinating.
Thank you so much for uploading this!
Id have been fine had they just kept the camera on Carter for the whole set 😂 guy is literally one of the best in the game.
awesome video, legend stuff. lol funny how you zoomed into the guy with the glasses at the beginning on dancing nancies. He stuck between a rock and hard place on who to dance with.
AH.....que coisa linda, a historia da DMB. Nessa época já estavam com sua musicalidade afinada. Muito obrigado por postar esse vídeo.....!!!!!!!
that guitar is awesome
Amazing. This is only the 3rd time Ants Marching was played live (that we know of).
+John Short Are you serious or being sarcastic? and if serious..why did he not play it more?
MakingAmerica GreatAgain that's how how young the band was. Boyd wasn't even in it yet, and peter was still on the keys.
this is by far the coolest dave matthews video ive ever seen. thank you
Haha it is cool. Other person up there was complaining about how much close zooming in there is.
I saw them at "Lake Quake" in April of 1992, they played out behind Shorts Hall on a stage backing to the chain link fence surrounding the football field. There were like 15 people sitting on the hill watching...times have changed. :-)
So you got Bob Saget on the keyboards & Dave's bouffant, 90's bangs. That's called a recipe for success! I imagine those people in the front row of the gymnasium never conceived that the giant VHS (Beta?) camcorder pointing at them would be beaming that shit (into the future) to the entire world 20 years later. Case and point the smooth operator with the tits dance moves. Great video, thanks for posting!
Amazing work, thanks for sharig!
00:00 Ants Marching

Love it....starts out recently with a Beatles intro
goes to show Dave started with serious world class talent behind him. Not to take anything away from Dave, he had the imaginative quirky songwriting. You wouldn’t have expected the musicians behind him to really have gotten it either considering the bands they could have chosen to join perhaps. The combination worked. To this day The Dave Matthews Band are STILL in their own niche. The Rock HOF nominating is a joke, and I’m sure they’ll get in eventually, would still be nice to see them get that recognition soon!
sweat dripping from his face only halfway through the first song lmao he was really determined to wear that tutleneck
The woman yawning during Recently.... Love
I would give anything to have seen them in the beginning. These students don't know how lucky they are.
Tom Hanks and Jean Claude Van Damme conceived a child (Dave Matthews), Bob Saget on keys, Easy E. on drums, Mouse from the Matrix on bass (go ahead Google it), and an angel playing sax. Somebody sign these boys!!
Jason Carst I was thinking eazy E also lmao
LULZ! Truly wish I could retweet this fab comment!
Freaking fantastic!!!
great songs, great band...
If I'm just listening, it's still the DMB I know and love but if I look back at it, I have to wonder if I'm watching Tom Hanks do some incredible lip sync :~D Love the extreme close up of his boots at the end of Lover Lay Down too.
Thank you D Matt!
Close up of bass guitar during Roi's solo on LLD... unforgivable
God I love DMB. Amazing vid man
