- This is a Motormouth couple car review of the 2023 Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid car. We have the top trim Toyota Prius Prime XSE Premium model for $49,965 CAD/$39,170 USD. In Canada the Toyota Prius Prime qualifies for the Federal EV rebate of $5,000 and incentives in participating provinces. It does not qualify for a tax credit in the US.
The Toyota Prius Prime has a 2L 4-cylinder matched to an e-CVT with a combined 220 horsepower. It has a 13.6 kWh battery and up to 72 km/44 miles of range on the base model and the XSE and XSE Premium models 64 km/39 miles. This is a FWD only model.
Standard features of the Toyota Prius Prime include, a 7” driver display, an 8” touchscreen, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a 6-speaker audio system, cloth upholstery, manual heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, 17” wheels and Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. In the US, heated from seats are standard one up from the base model.
Available features of the Toyota Prius Prime include the larger 12.3” touchscreen, a 360-camera, JBL sound system, wireless charger, a power driver’s seat, driver seat memory, ventilated front seats, Softex upholstery, a fixed glass roof with two sunshades, heated rear seats, a power rear door and 19” wheels.
Depending on the wheels you choose the combined fuel economy is between 1.8Le to 2.1Le/100 km, that’s 127 MPGe to 114 MPGe.
When the battery is depleted, the base trim with the 17” wheels get a combined 4.5L/100 km and the higher trims with the 19” wheels 4.9L/100 km combined That’s 52 or 48 MPG combined.
The Toyota Prius Prime has a 3.5 kW onboard charger and with a Level 1 charger it will take about 11 hours to charge your vehicle and with a Level 2 charger 4 hours.
The base SE Prime starts at $41,125 CAD/$32,350 USD and the XSE is $45,965 CAD/$35,600 USD.

Been there, doing that. Have had my PP SE for just over 2.5 months. Experimenting with different ways to drive this thing. First tank of gas lasted me over 1300km - kept charging it. Mine was a cancelled order when original buyer changed mind after waiting 2 years. It's the only one my dealer got this year. PS - Wife has '17 Prius. She loves it. Some noteworthy points:
1. I regularly carry a lot of "stuff". Came from VW Sportwagen. Was going to get cargo box. No need now. It carries all the stuff I need it to.
2. Got my $5K gov't rebate.
3. Part of the purchase agreement: dealer made me sign a document to say if I sold the car privately in the first 12 months, I would be penalized $20,000.00. No biggie. The dealer will take it back for what I paid for it. Nearly every salesman has a list of PP buyers on a list.
4. There is a section in the 600+ page owner's manual that says something about it's best to NOT use EV Mode on a longer hiway drive. I tried it. Good practice. This thing gets switched to EV Mode at the last traffic light before hitting hiway, I can get
I moved 2000 km to the French riviera last month and drove 2000 km, and my 260 hp 550 nm bmw coupe did 4,8 liters on average, and that included driving 240-260 kmh for a longer period of time.
Prius is a popular brand, but does it have anything going for it when it comes to fuel economy, it never was impressive in Europe at least. The car I drove is 16 years old soon, and it’s long and quite big. 20 year old car do 4l per 100 km and it’s nothing special to do 1400 km on a tank. My dad’s VW minivan did that. You drove for 50 km, and instead of substracting the range, it added 300 km to it
I agree on the AWD thing. I've driven some real beaters, and while I appreciate the AWD in my 03 matrix now, it's really not necessary. Helps though. Not for me specifically but because of other idiots who believe in AWD as the solution to snow in city driving. They drive stupidly in big AWD trucks or SUVs and having AWD helps you get around and away from idiots when driving defensively more effectively. No need to worry about taking a corner a bit too quick on bad roads because buddy behind you doesn't understand stopping distance. Right?

I 💙💙💙 the content of your channel & your easy going banter. 5*! I agree with you both about the rakeof the A-pillars. Most folks aren't willing to “rock & roll” in their seat to check visabilty. It works in large commercial vehicles and is a must for school buses. I have a CR-V & find the driver’s “B” pillar too wide doing a shoulder check. Set your mirrors correctly &/or buy a set of convex mirrors to help with the problem.

Thanks so much for the comments on sight lines. Something I've been concerned about since day one but others barely mention if at all. At 6'2" I would be bothered by all this but would still love to have one for around town.
A lot of newer vehicles have visibility issues from the hefty A and B pillars required by modern crash strength rules and increasing fuel efficiency rules. It has been worsening for years. It is a result of government imposed requirements.

Took your advice last year and invested in the "Bank of Toyota" and purchased a pre-owned 2016 PriusV with 32,000 kM's on the odometer. We get 4.7 L/100 kM City and 5.4 Highway. Recently took 2 adults and 2 children in car seats with 3 large luggage and 3 Carry-on to YVR. Considering the price of the new Prius, we'll drive this one for a lot of years and then let a taxi company buy it. With the fuel savings we get, we now stay in 4 or 5 Star Hotels when we travel.
Here is my 2¢ (Canadian) as a Hyundai Tucson PHEV owner to my Toyota friends out there. The PHEV does everything that was promised, and I'm satisfied with it. But that said, it took 16 months to get delivered and the wait is even longer now. I wouldn't order a PHEV now with these crazy delays that we're seeing. A regular hybrid is good enough, in my opinion. (Also, I have some button and shifter envy for that Prius!)

I look forward to the winter review. The type of rain we get most of the year in Vancouver, a light misting rain, is going to be a huge issue. Freezing rain, morning frost and condensation, this car seems so impractical without the rear windshield wiper.
Same here in ireland ..looks a great car but not very practical at all. Rear wiper is essential.

Vastly improved car, especially the looks and fuel economy... my problem would be getting in and out of the car (like Zack, I to have the torso of a giant) and the big A-pillars obstructing my view.
I drive a SUV and really don't understand how the 2024 Prius quotes a higher ground clearance than my SUV. The Prius looks so low on the road. A lot of the roads i drive daily would be a challenge for the Prius.
The best-looking car right now imo. However, the price is a turn-off for me.

Prius Prime XSE all the way for me. On a waiting list for 18 months for my 2024 in Montréal. Just wish they could make more of these ;) I already have a Crosstrek PHEV, which is fantastic! The extra EV range and perfect city size functionality of the Prius Prime would be amazing as our second vehicle.
As always, Z & A deliver the goods. The Prime will tick most of the boxes for a lot of people. Great job Toyota.

Just got my 2023 prius prime xse premium withing a week, my girlfriend got the 2023 rav4 prime xse a week before me on the day we started shopping for it. We do live in san diego, so im guessing that helped since we have more than 5 toyota dealerships.😮
I have a 2018 Prius Prime.. drove it from Vancouver, BC to Boise, Idaho. Basically a tank of gas each way. Toyota's "Primes" are the way to go

Here in early 2024 was able to get an incoming Prime in 2 weeks by not being too picky. Enjoying it a lot. Almost as much EV range as the old Leaf with degrading battery it replaced, but zero range anxiety.

I have been considering trading in my PHEV for a Prius Prime since it has essentially double my EV-only range.
I would be using some gasoline on my long commute each way (I charge at both home and the office) with either car. The weekends, however, would be the big difference.
I see some good savings on money by using EV when I go into town and only burn gas on the way home. With the Prius Prime, I would be able to round-trip on EV only.
For those paying close attention and thought something odd is going on, the office is an additional 40 miles beyond town. So, the workweek roundtrip is 120 miles and the weekend "going into town" roundtrip is 40 miles.
Great review! I am the proud owner of a yellow Prime XSE Premium here in Ontario, for just over a week now. 😎 Fantastic car, light years ahead of my 2014 Prius Plug-in I had before this... Have driven about 500km so far, and the gas needle has barely moved off full (mainly from day 1 when I had to drive it ~100km home from the dealer in HV mode… they forgot to charge it)… 🙄
I am 6’2”, and find the driving position excellent; I have no problem viewing the display and have not found the A/B pillars to be a problem, but will pay closer attention to that.
In terms of wait list, I put a deposit for a Prius Prime in May 2022 at my local dealer anticipating it to be a 2023 new model. Then in May this year, my friend’s dealer had a Yellow Premium coming in for August that was unsold, so I jumped on that and took delivery last week. 😎. Oh, and I also just heard my original vehicle came in this week as well (Blue Premium), which is now going to someone else. Of course, part of the wait with my original order was that the Prime wasn’t even available until May or so this year.
I also have 2 other friends getting Primes in the next 2-3 weeks, so they are certainly coming in, at least in Ontario. 😀. Cheers.
When did you order your Prius? I have the same one on order. Ordered last September 5th and no idea when it is coming in or even if it is on the production list. I know the factory received the order, that is about it.
@@gordonderouyan9980 I originally put an order in May 2022, but then got lucky when I heard in May this year another dealer had a Yellow Premium coming in August that was available, so I moved on that. The vehicle originally allocated to me at the other dealer coincidentally came in last week. (Blue Premium… That car is now sold as well to someone else). But they are coming in!

Toyota hybrids are definitely tough to get. We were just at the Toyota dealership in Richmond to ask about the Toyota Venza. The salesman said they desperately wish they could get them. He said they are not expecting to get any in for the rest of 2023 and 2024. The problem he said is that the majority of the Venzas are going to the US. As a result, they are very tough to get here in Canada.

I followed one on the upper levels on Friday, in my Niro. That trunk opening looks super narrow, I'm not a fan from behind. Looks nice from the other angles though.

That is a really sexy looking sedan. I hate that the styling inhibits sight lines, but otherwise, woooo, what a nice update. I love the idea of solar charging and foregoing the glass on the roof. Down here in SoCal we really do not need anything that gives more light into the car. I see how in a cloudy / cold / rainy / gray area it might be nice, but my sunroof shade is almost always closed. If I were in the market for a sedan I'd strongly consider getting on the waiting list. Too bad I already have and love my 2023 Rav4. Also, my dogs said they are not willing to trade SUV life for a sedan. :) Really sharp looking though, yay Toyota!

I own Prius prime 2020 and already booked new prime XSE premium. I have done 48000 kms and live in Calgary where we see extreme cold temperatures. Still I managed to get 1.7L/100 kms for my 48000 kms. I think I only spent below $500 on gas in last 3 years.. I love my Prime.
Have you ever been bother/tease by some truck drivers for having a PP in Alberta? I mean, some are hillbillies who can’t understand sometimes an V8 is not needed!

for us we had a deposit on a 23 prius xle trim. we were on the list for a few months and we are thinking about putting a deposit. on the prius hopefully we can get a new prius within 1 to 5 months. should we get a new 23 prius or a 23 prius prime.

I love Toyotas, but our local dealership here in Beaverton, Oregon has totally ruined the buying experience by requiring the purchase of dealer installed add-ons which are overpriced and of little value. I told them to take a hike. Looking at other brands or perhaps the used market instead. No shortage of greedy behavior here in the USA!
Your thoughts that the Venza will be leaving after 2024
It’s such a nice looking car but the A pillars & visibility concerns me. I like the wireless charger though - it’s a space saving slot design.
A pillars are bad in many vehicles. My new Camry is also not great. Pedestrians at intersections are tough to see as they're directly behind the A pillar. Not a huge deal in daylight but add tinted windows are driving at night and like Zork Spangler said, you have to purposely look around the pillar to proceed safely.
Ms Freeland will no doubt take helicopters from now on. 😂
The steering wheel/instrument display alignment is a common complaint. Its like they were intending to use a yoke control and then backed out of that decision.

I have a 2014 Prius with a more severe back window and I can honestly say I never use the rear wiper.
This car fits my requirement perfectly but this car exists in paper not in the dealer lot!

I have the 2023 Prius XLE in the USA in Sonic Red. It is the most attention-grabbing color of all the colors. I constantly get a thumbs up or get comments for drivers as they drive by!
I have a 22’ PP. my record is 1560km on a single tank and charging every night.
When I heard Zack say "FWD" the air in the bubble burst- but I think this also comes in AWD too right? I wonder how well it will perform in the winter time up here in the Pacific Northwest as the winters have been becoming quite challenging to drive-in, Oregon to be more exact.
Toyota Engineering went too-cute with that center console display. Did they not forget that there was still a "round" steering wheel, not a "Yoke" that may have an issue for the driver to see the most important things needed when driving a car? Also the "A" pillar- wow what were they thinking about there too? Yikes- Face plant time!
I was considering this vehicle, but I think I may go back to an SUV like the Mazda CX-5 as it doesn't have the stupid CVT transmission and it still has a traditional NA engine with 6 speed automatic with AWD.
2023 Prius AWD yes - 2023 Prius Prime AWD no - bigger battery takes the space so no rear motor.
Hybrids don’t have cvt transmissions .

@@psychiatry-is-eugenics Toyota calls it "planetary-type continuously variable transmission" so perhaps "Hybrids don't" in general or by definition, but the 2023 Prius does by Toyota's definition.
The issue is how the hybrid transmission gets it's variability. It is NOT by the unreliable mechanical components that regular non-hybrid CVTs use and does not suffer the reliability issues of the old styles of CVT. So it is not correct to infer any loss of reliability in this device.

Overall this is a great vehicle and if you buy the middle trim with the Canadian Federal EV rebate, you get this plug-in hybrid for a good price $40,965 CAD. Plus some provinces offer their own EV rebates which lowers the price even more.

Right. Don't do the spreadsheet calculation because the prime loses this challenge. The heart wants what the heart wants, but who are we kidding? It's about the money.
So A pillar visibility issues, Andrea has to change her driving position just to see the speedometer display, and no rear wiper like the Hyundai Ionic 5 that also lies that you don't need a rear wiper hmmm. Upside its the nicest looking one yet and you get great reliability. I was one recently and the Polestar and both felt very cheap inside...

I thought that classic design was too good to be true. Your warning about the A pillar is critical. The lack of the rear wiper would probably not be a problem in our fair weather. With a car that is going to be this much in demand , why can’t Toyota double production?

So in South East US, I'm noticing Prius Primes are just now starting to show up. I found out about the new Prius Prime over a month ago and decided it was the car for me to get. Currently have a Prius gen 3: before discovering about the new Prius, I was thinking I needed to find something else (gen 4 was just so ugly). I'll mainly use it with EV city driving. Because they're still rare, seems you have to be checking Toyota's site and contacting the dealer when you see the allocation. As far as tax rebate....what I find odd is that in the US there actually is a tax rebate for leasing the Prius Prime (I'm going to go ahead and buy cash since I'll own it for years and it will be good fuel economy).
As always, great review! I was so excited when I saw the design of the new Prius. I recently brought my Toyota in for service and had them pull one up to the front for me to take a look at. I was surprised by the lack of cargo room in the back trunk. The styling is really great, but if I had to make a decision right now between this and the upcoming model 3 refresh…. I think I might just go for the model 3; at least I would get a frunk!

Did you have a look at the Corolla Cross Hybrid online which has not been delivered here in Ontario yet to dealerships.
This has more accessible and practical cargo capacity with a lift back compared to the Model 3 trunk

@@Flying-Fox-of-Snowy-Mountain I’m not a SUV fan, even though I live in Dallas, Texas where lots of people drive trucks and SUVs. I have seen the cross here and there. I prefer the looks of the new HRV from Honda or the smaller Mazda CUVs
In the USA, unfortunately due to the lack of stock due to issues, dealers are getting one Prius per month in and have created a shortage with a high demand. Accordingly most dealers in the USA ate charging $4000 to $8000 over sticker. I got a 2023 Prius XLE with the moonroof and larger 12/14 inch console in Sonic Red at sticker. I was lucky. The car is awesome. Its like driving a Lamborghini. I constantly get thumbs up and looks. Have been driving a Prius for 16 years. With gas prices at present levels and electric cars being too high priced and charging stations not accessible....the Prime just not justify the price.
Plenty of Prius here in the SF Bay Area. SF Toyota is asking $2k markup on all Prius, including the Prime.

Neither would I. Plenty of inventory in California. In April I bought my wife a new Lexus NX350H hybrid, MSRP and no add ons. Told the dealer if they want a quick sale and I am ready to write that check. Last year every dealer were asking $2-5k mark up and I refused to play into that game.

Smart grandpa. :) I have never had any relationship with any dealers. But when I decide to buy something I am ready to buy. Cash talks and the moment I bring in my checkbook, dealer tends to agree. Most salesperson can tell I am not screwing around, I offer them a quick 10 minutes sale with no fuzz.
I wonder why the supply chain has not been sorted out by now. In AUS, my daughter has been waiting for the Corolla Cross for 10 months and it is now scheduled this Dec/Jan.

I agree. It does make one wonder what’s going on but it just might be a matter of monumental incompetence on the part of Toyota distributors or plain lack of manufacturing resources to handle the demand. Can’t imagine the amount of businesses they are losing, it has to be a lot. Though with the prices consumers are getting gouged with their profit margins are probably humongous.

Everyone talks about the savings with the plug in models. Where is everyone getting the electricity for free to charge said battery. I still have to pay for my electricity but would like to know where it's free.

If you need a low inventory vehicle, just do a national search, find it and paid for the shipping. Or just buy what's available locally!
Yet another new hatch without a rear wiper. It’s not just the rain, it’s also the dust, frost or snow that can be cleared with a wiper.
What I'd love is for you to give us the MPG - but not with you driving but like a 20 year old buy who isn't worried about coasting but getting to his destination on time.
The Prius Prime is an interesting auto, so why am I not interested in buying one? Here are my reasons:
1) Very poor outward visibility to the rear, and through the front A-pillars. 2) A bad dash - steering wheel design that is not good for a person with a long torso, big belly and short legs (I am not going to fit!) 3) The price, very expensive with the usual Toyota dealership markups in the many thousands - especially with the artificial scarcity that some Japanese brands proclaim. 4) An engine under the hood with the added weight and complexity of a battery and heat pump. 5) Unlike an electric, you still have a gas engine that will require oil and filter changes twice yearly and the petrol in the gas tank still will have to be burned off annually to keep fresh, even if one drives entirely off the electric wall outlet gas will go stale.
Yes, Toyota makes reliable hybrids - I know for I had both the first and second generation Prius; but I wonder if this is a good value as compared to a Corolla or Camry, for it would take many, many years for any savings payback even at today's ridiculous gas prices. To me this car is a gimmick and a waste of money over a conventional gas car and it does not have the low maintenance advantages of an all electric one either. Save your money, buy a Corolla hybrid instead, it may not have the zoom, zoom, but you'll save thousands. Or, or, or buy a Tesla instead? Or better yet wait five or ten years till your existing car truly needs replacement - stop self-indulgent spending that keeps the prices up for those who truly need a new car.

I think a Camry Hybrid makes more sense, it’s a slight premium over the ICE Camry and gets almost the same gas mileage vs. Prius hybrid mode, without the bother of plugging it in. The Prius prime is a $5,500 Cdn/$4,200 US premium, so the payback between the two could be 10 years depending on EV only frequency.

What about a child car seat in the back? No one mentions that but I got a pretty big 5 year old. Is his head gonna be ok as he grows?
Elantra Hybrid (still a long wait to get like the Corolla hybrid); there is an interesting comparison by Alex on Autos, "Is The 2023 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid The One To Get?" He says yes and no BUT on the Elantra Hybrid - IN REAL WORLD he felt it would get better range, had much better seats, much longer warranty, and better pricing. On the downside, no AWD, not as cool looking, not as sporty to drive. He noted the 6 speed dual clutch is a negative for some - BUT to drive the car as the battery at low speed handles the "crawling annoyance" and it protects the transmission as the computer handles that hand off to the dual clutch once you get rolling better. That was my take on it - so watch it yourself of course to decide on it.
You should do an episode talking about the amount of polution tthe factories that build those bateries produce. Also, what is the electricity bill after charging those vehicles.
I am waiting for the next gen Lexus ES hybrid. If the new ES style is not to my liking, I will get a regular Prius.
Some great improvements but the main question I have is whether there is a future for hybrids. You are lugging around two propulsion systems and they have to be integrated with each other. The mechanical complexity is significant. As batteries improve (higher kwh/$) I think hybrids will become obsolete. Tesla has already announced a 500km battery range for a new Model 3. If that is the norm, then will Toyota continue to produce a Prius? Will parts be readily available for such a car as its market share declines? I think this makes sense for someone who does a lot of driving in town, like taxi drivers.
Toyota’s hybrid system is stupid reliable and doesn’t have many issues. As long as people continue to live in apartments/condos or lack access to charging, hybrids will have a place
I don't think it's something to worry about.
Will be a very very long time before EV's are the standard car globally, it's estimated 2-3% cars on the road are EV's today, your perception isn't the reality.
Although personally I would go for regular hybrid or full ev, not phev.
Hybrids have a proven track record for reliability, EV's not so much! Hybrids will be for the masses as EV"s are not affordable for regular people, as evident by EV sales falling. And not all people have a home charging station or rent.
That isn't how it actually works. Integration of gas & electric is so comprehensive, it is really just one system. The hybrid system eliminated the need for a starter, a transmission, steering-fluid, and a serpentine-belt for accessories. Adding a plug and an increase of battery-capacity greatly extends the life of the gas-engine. This is extremely well proven too. Toyota's first-gen plug-in hybrid is now 11 years old. There is a solid position for PHEV for many years to come. They are a strong bridge to BEV as lacking/problematic/absent infrastructure is addressed.

First and foremost, I do like this new Prius. It is good looking, great fuel economy and it has a clever interior interior. That being said, this would be the wrong vehicle for the long-distance commuter. Comfort, noise and resale should be this individual’s highest priorities. Hybrids make a lot of sense for a city (stop/go) commuter. In the city this car gets amazing mpg. This is where they shine. But with this person’s 140 mile (70 miles each way?), they cannot take advantage of this hybrid technology - they would, if the commute wasn’t 90% highway (as claimed). 225 km (140 miles) multiplied by 260 (average amount of work days) equals 58,500 kms (36,300 miles)… a YEAR! In 4 short years, that’s nearly a quarter of a million kilometres (250,000 kms)! This persons life is in their car… commuting. My advice… get a better, bigger or more comfortable non-hybrid car… or the obvious… MOVE closer. Thanks for the video.

Not enough EV range. We have a Honda Clarity PHEV with 47 miles of EV range. It supports 100% EV most days - but could be better as some of our trips push into the 50+ range. Too bad Honda doesn't make the Clarity PHEV any longer. It's the best car I've ever owned and has everything the Prius Prime has.
The new prius primes get over 40 miles EV range...

Toyota and Lexus have a big problem by not having cars to test drive. You need to do a couple of test drives before making a buying decision! Our Lexus dealer insisted I put down a $1000 deposit to get on the NX waiting list, and when one finally came in I was less than impressed. The dealer's response was people are taking what they can get and only relying on reviews to buy sight unseen and I was unreasonable.
What was underwhelming? I like the nx hybrid, too.
The NX did not feel or drive $7,000 better than my friends 2019 Rav4 XSE hybrid. In fact it felt smaller inside and I think the Rav4 seats are more comfortable. The dealer had the expectation I was going to buy then and now, so the test drive was on a rainy night the week before Christmas when the traffic was barely moving so the drone of the hybrid system was very apparent. We didn't even get a change to see the vehicle inside a lighted service bay to see the interior color and fit and finish. The whole experience was terrible, perhaps on a nice sunny day with a low pressure sales approach I would have come to like the NX hybrid more. We go to a Lexus dealer for a premium experience and product and this was not that. @@anissakhalid8409
