They do it both for comedy, and to scout. Think back to the custom biomes and dimensions however long ago that was, that's a feature now
Wouldn't be surprised if some of these, like the barrel or maybe even being able to throw things (or place items) became actual mechanics in a future release
For an April Fool's prank, this legitimately has features that would be incredible in the actual game

Another fun feature of this update:
Throwing blocks damages mobs, and the damage is scaled based on the hardness of the block.
Dirt deals almost nothing.
Obsidian and bedrock will one-shot the Wither.

As a bedrock player I am sad I do not get to play this update
So I watched SmallAnt speedrun this version and apparently its actually possible to beat the game. If you break nether fortress chests, they'll drop end portal frames and if they are all facing correctly (by throwing them straight up) it will generate the portal. Additionally, he found an exploit where pressing f to switch to your offhand actually works and you can hold two items at once. Finally, instead of killing the ender dragon, you have to attempt to grab it and something very cool happens...
Edit: I forgot to mention that you can craft by placing a crafting table surrounded by blocks and throw or shift click the items onto the grid and it will craft the item

It is definitely fair to say that a *lot* of people saw smallant speedrun this version.
Some things I found:
When you punch a skeleton, it'll shoot wherever you're facing. So you can use it as a weapon.
When you punch a spider, you can walk on walls.
When you punch an enderman, you randomly teleport. Especially, if you went into water.
When you punch a chicken you have a slow fall effect.
You can stack mobs on your head and when you drop them, they're on top of each other.
also Spiderpig you can walk on the celing

I have just played this for just over 3 hours, "completing" the game with the help of some commands along the way
You missed a few things, here is what I had found:
Blocks:
- If you throw a block (or anything, excluding mobs, really) onto the side of a full block, or sometimes onto a transparent block (like grass or an item), it sometimes just stays in its entity form without snapping onto another block, allowing you to stack them onto each other
Holding mobs:
- You can hold more than one mob (seems infinite)
- You can't hold horses, instead you ride them (only exception?)
- When you hold some mobs directly above your head, you can gain an ability from them
- With the abilities, you can only get it from the mob directly above your head and nothing else
- Some of the abilities:
- Spider: climb up walls
- Skeleton: it fires an arrow where you are looking every few seconds
-If you shoot a creeper with the skeleton until it dies, the creeper drops a music disc which you can actually put into a jukebox for it to play, although if you try to take out the music disc then it stops playing and the music disc doesn't drop. Not like you can craft anyways, from what I know of.
- Chicken: you fall slowly
- Bee: you dont have any gravity
- Creeper: you die if you dont throw it soon enough
- You can hold ghast fireballs fireballs, those of which still maintain their direction they are going in when you release them (if you throw them the opposite way, it can seem like throwing a frisbee tilted upwards and away from yourself in real life)
- When you are holding a ghast, the hitbox of the ghast gets in the way of everything else, such that you can not hold anything else
Other things about mobs that I have noticed:
- It seems that skeletons sometimes spawn with two spyglasses against their head, making it such that when day comes by a few times there are some spyglasses all over the ground.
- Endermen spawn with random items in their hands, some of those seeming to be waterlogged. It also seems that throwing (you cant place it outside of water, but you can still throw it) kelp allows for the placement of water, as wherever it lands there appears a water.
Nether:
- When you go to the nether, you can actually find end portal frames in the chests at the nether fortress
- You can actually make an end portal, it is just very hard, I got a few blocks down but then filled the rest and then filled a hole in the middle with air, then broke a side and replaced it correctly with commands, and the end portal had appeared (for me it was out of the side instead of in the middle, and I had made it in the nether next to the nether fortress
- Killing the ender dragon is hard. At this point, I had just given myself infinite haste to speed up the process of breaking blocks like endstone
- After being in the end for a while, the whole island gets a whole lot of random blocks all around, due to the endermen spawning with holding random blocks. There is also water all over, due to some of those blocks SOMEHOW waterlogged when they are placed.
I already streamed my gameplay to youtube here and I think I will maybe even try to make an edited video containing all of this information, maybe also even including some other things I have found out online.
Also if you spam space with chickens you fly for some reason
You can also ride the ender dragon and you can craft by placing items on the ground and throwing a crafting table on them
(I haven't played this myself at least yet but I watched a video from SmallAnt)
How is a creeper dropping a disc new
Creepers will always drop music disks when killed by skeletons, and it's probably because the blocks spawn in random states, and waterlogged is one of those states. If that's the case the endermen probably spawn with enabled trapdoors, lamps, turned off redstone torches, and unlit campfires to name a few obvious ones
You can just ride the ender dragon, you can do a pacifist run in minecraft dude
they nerfed steve in this update. now he can only carry 9 tons of rock (Hand + Offhand + Head) instead of 6912.

Hiding in a barrel has been a joke way longer than metal gear was a game.
The amount of little features in this update is insane, they really went the full way to make this idea fully functional! I watched SmallAnt's video on this and while I never saw the barrel thing, there are so many cool redesigns for how things work. Skeletons can now become sentries that fight for you if you hold them!

Well, they did it. They managed to make something that can be compared to the Infinity update.
Definitely, this one is more fun in creative mode though, mainly so you can explore all the different items since finding crafting table can take a long time

Fun Fact/Tip; Holding a chicken will slow your falling and you can jump in the air and fly, so it's the most usefull mob now

Actually this update is going to be a godsend for puzzle maps. There are a ton of completely new mechanics at play, and as long as you make the map on another snapshot you can port the world over and play it with these scuffed mechanics.
Man, I wish some of these April fools things were actual things, last years book dimensions were so cool, and the barrel idea is cool too

Extra things:
you CAN get to the end, and there’s an achievement for riding the ender dragon,
Enderman spawn holding random items (including command blocks, structure blocks etc…
You can stack multiple mobs on your head
You can craft by throwing crafting tables onto blocks placed on the floor
also, when holding a pig, the pig is upside down and inverts gravity near ceilings so you can hang on ceilings and stuff.

But how is to craft a crafting table in the first place?
Heres a couple more things about this update, if you are holding a chicken, and you jump off a cliff, you'll float down the same as the chicken would, plus you can throw mobs at each other, and different mobs go different distances. Also, the fact that you can play catch with yourself, or someone else, cause you can still grab the blocks while they are in the air falling. Very weird update, but very fun
I have posted a suggestion named "Wearable barrels (hiding in barrel blocks)" so go vote for it, if you would like to see it in the game
I love this update. There’s so much effort put into it even if you don’t realize instantly. I also respect that they actually made this version beatable

I had to read it twice to understand the joke.
They have even tried to make the game fully capable of being used on a survival world.
you can throw a crafting table on top of the ingredients you want to combine, you can smelt things by putting them next to lava or fire, you can make a sheep explode wool when you punch it, you can place a vine on the ground making it a generic_minecraft_block, you can even hold mobs to use them for their properties (teleportation, infinite arrow shooting, the ability to fly without an elytra, etc.) or throw them as if they were projectiles!
The only downside is that every tool has one use, despite of the material.
The fact that you can hold enemies in this update reminds me of Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, where you could hold inhaled enemies, blocks, or abilities and throw them like a projectile, or in the case of enemies, hold them over your head. Flying or floating enemies will cause you to fall slower.

you can get to the end! the end portal frames face the direction of the stronghold and then you just have to complete the portal since they already have the ender eyes in them

Honestly, some of this should be an actual feature in the game. Carrying stuff like you actually would irl (like the carryon mod offers) and playing Metal Gear in minecraft sounds really fun.
A bit dissapointed the barrel wasn't a Skyrim reference where you put the barrel on the zombie's head so he can't see you anymore, though the metal gear reference is also cool lol

I'm actually a fan of the barrel feature. If it was a bit more polished, I could see that being a genuinely great addition to the game. It'd provide more unique ways to play, more use for the barrel, and a good way to create a Hide n' Seek mini game!

The end portal frames point towards the closest stronghold, like eyes of ender. Once you're in one, they're gonna face the right way up and you'll be able to build the end portal. Also holding a chicken and spamming space bar makes you fly.

Some of this is actually cool. Like items being placeable and blocks being throwable
If you are playing on multiplayer you are able to duplicate blocks by throwing a block at the other players feet. When it hits them the block will go on their head and be placed on the ground at the same time. Then all you need to do is throw another block at them to knock the duped block off and now you have 2.
Other things I have found are:
- You can stack multiple mobs on your head
- If you stack skeletons on you they will shoot in the direction you look
- You can pick up all entities (end crystals, fireballs, boats and minecarts)
- If you stack boats they may combine and become a single entity comprised of about 50 boats of varying heights
- Guardians will not target you unless you have more then 2 on your head
- You can ride the ender dragon (best feature)
- Having an enderman on your head will randomly teleport you and if you jump into water you will also be teleported
- Holding spiders will let you climb blocks like a spider
- You can bring water into the nether by holding sea grass and bringing it through the portal with you then placing it in the nether
- Some blocks will have unique properties if thrown on your head (fence, end rod, glass, bone and chest)
- By picking up an entity and another player then throwing them you can leave a player sitting on an entity (like an end crystal or fireball)
Also:
When you die the block in your inventory will be placed where you died.
If you had multiple blocks in your inventory (one in main and one in offhand) then the one in the offhand will just vanish on death

You can build a end portal by finding them in nether fortress chests making the game beatable
Some of these features are cool, like throwing weapons BOTW style, or wearing hollow blocks like a pumpkin. Sinking into a barrel or pumpkin could be a cool stealth mechanic, especially with the warden or endermen
Plus adding grabbing certain mobs could be interesting. Imagine grabbing onto a bat or parrot to have higher jumps and slow falling, at the expense of not being able to use items or place blocks while you're holding it
Being able to hold onto a bat/parrot/chicken would be fun in itself (and kind of realistic)
everyone keeps talking about the lack of a hotbar and inventory but nobody's talking about the hunger system being gone

Honestly, Mojang probably put more effort in this “update” than the next snapshot
its actually possible to beat the game, some things were changed for it to work, in nether fortresses, there are end frames in the chest you can collect and manually build the frame by repeatedly throwing the frame pieces in the air, they will rotate randomly every time you throw it, and once you are in the end, there are some magical things that are gonna happen
edit: also to note, to craft stuff, you throw a crafting table in the way you want to craft things, or throw it above it and have it land on the stuff
