Can We Make Calais to Spain in UNDER 24 Hours? Epic Van Life Challenge - Those Weirdos
Vložit
- čas přidán 11. 07. 2021
- Hello! We have a fabulous video today as we race and try to get from Calais to Spain in under 24 hours. With current travel restrictions, we needed to transit through France in 24 hours or less, which was a daunting task. We talk you through our route, the mileages and costs of tolls, diesel prices and what the total journey cost us.
BUT did we make it?
A negative PCR test is required to travel on the Eurotunnel and enter France, as well as several French documents of declaration.
Please check Gov websites for latest travel restrictions.
A summary of all the current requirements can be found here:
We've been 'stuck' in the UK (again) since returning to see loved ones over Christmas while we wait for our Visa. After nearly 6 months of waiting, we are finally off! This will be a mammoth task as we haven't had the Covid vaccine, so we have to transit trough France to Spain in 24 hours or less! Follow us on our adventure to the sun!

Great video and what a challenge! Well done! Great to have all the information! Looking forward to future videos!
Cheers, Maxz Thanks so much! it was a challenge indeed, glad we are stationary now and by a beach :) we aim to release at least 1 video a week, next up will be another maddish dash through Spain to get to the Med to meet friends and relax for a bit :)
Thanks for documenting your mad dash. Really nicely put together video, really entertaining as well of course. Enjoy the slower pace
Thanks so much, I'm really enjoying learning the editing side of things, although it is very time-consuming as well! And absolutely now parked up on the beach and resting for a few days with friends :)
Great video Dom ! Glad you all made it. Hope to see you out there one day. Stay safe 👍🏻🍻
Thanks to you all, hope you get out soon ❤️
You are all legends! Loved watching every minute! Enjoy Spain and see you out there in Europe soon guys! Stay safe and my love to you all!

Thanks for taking us with you , don’t think I could drive that long but good to see you there save enjoy looking forward to the next video.🥰🥂
Pleasure and it was very tiring, but we can slow down now ❤️😁 first mission complete..... ❤️
Great video, well put together and good story telling of your journey
Thank you glad you enjoyed it ❤️👌
A very enjoyable watch, thanks for sharing👍Mark & Coral
A pleasure and thanks so much to the both of you for watching :)
Just subscribed and I am really enjoying the back catalogue of videos. Well done guys on the Dash through France.
Thanks very much!
Just started watching! And it’s like a Top Gear Challenge! 👍🥳❤️
😂
i have watched a lot of different van dwelling/travelling videos and think this video was amazing. One of the best in regards to editing and choices of accompanying soundtracks. An outstanding achievement considering the constraints you were under. Well done!
Im sure when you begin your farm life your subscriber count and views will rocket. I cant wait for you to begin that chapter of your life, as i will be doing a similar thing when i retire in 6 years.
Wow, thank you! I've been trying to improve my editing, and it's a slow learning curve, but I'm really enjoying that journey as well as the travelling journey. Its really nice and so appreciated having that part of the video process noted, thanks so much :)
Cant wait to begin looking at land and I do hope the subs go up!! :)
Epic Journey guys enjoyed the video
Thanks Stephen, was an epic journey!
That was a great vlog, loved the updates on Insta. What a challenge, a long distance drive with added stress of a time limit. As you are now at the coast, you can relax and breathe in all that lovely sea air and destress. The costs for those tests - ouch! Enjoy your time away, looking forward to next vlog. Emma
Thank you was a challenge but equally on a mission so tiring but fun ❤️
Hello lovely weirdos, been following your journeys for sometime even before all this circus started... you really getting good info for us people who want to get land abroad in this case Portugal and all the necessary paperwork to do so and travel experience in this situation. You guys been an inspiration and just to show the reality and what is happening out there. After pondering this all situation we decided to follow the same route and travel to Portugal mid August. Thanks very much and we hope to see you and meet you sometime along our quest somewhere in a sunny place. Namaste
So pleased to have contributed to your plans, hope we meet on the road and good luck with your own mission to get here ❤️🤞
Really enjoyed the journey and detail.look forward to following your journey and seeing the detail behind your land purchase
Thanks and thanks for watching ❤️
Hope to start looking at land very very soon ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Great video guys really helpful and entertaining keep us posted down to Malaga have a safe journey thanks.
Thanks! We've been filming all day 😁
Well done! Epic drive! 🎉✌🏻
Thanks Amy, and it was certainly an epic drive! Now to get into Portugal :)
Interesting to watch this 2 years later and remember all the restrictions that were in place. Having done long journeys where the aim was "get there as quickly as possible" and not enjoying it, I decided that in future I'll make the journey slower and enjoy it more. However, it's interesting to see how you handled it when you didn't have the choice of taking your time.
I know wasa challenge but prefer a much slower pace....
Cracking video, loved following your journey. A*** viewing
Thanks so much Andy, good to have you along for the ride :)
Well done. Looking forward to next leg.
Thanks! Been filming for it all day 😁
Epic journey. Well done guys 👍
Thanks, Denise was rather long! Glad to be resting up now on the beach :)
This has got to be one of your best videos ever (apart from watching you live on Steph’s Packed lunch lol). So much information too in one video. I want to go to Spain but have had reservations about the travelling but now I know I could do it (at a much slower pace). Can’t wait to see the next one through Spain in a leisurely fashion. Stay safe and thank you for your wonderful content. Keep smiling ~ Lin xx
Thanks lin ❤️
We shot through Spain with a rest at the beach 😂🏖️❤️
Just arrived on Portugal now to seek land ❤️🇵🇹
Just subscribed. Loved this very informative video on your travels. Loved it thankyou. It's defo on our wish list in our van conversion to do this. Enjoy your travels, can't wait to carry on watching the next episode. 😁❤
Thanks so much and welcome to the channel 👌😊
Well done guys I hope you are there by now and loving the sun
Thank you and yes just arrived in Portugal 🇵🇹❤️
Excellent video Dom and Missy! We shall be taking a similar path in October albeit slower! Rosslare to Cherbourg and down the west coast before crossing into Spain. Hope you are all now well rested and the van is holding up well 👍
Van is broken so needs some work 😩 but drives OK, so slowed right down, resting and looking forward to seeking out land ❤️
Enjoy your travels to 😊
@@TheWildlandersOffGrid I hope nothing major and that you can get it repaired without to much cost. In my opinion, the Sprinter is a relatively easy van to work on, quite unlike some fwd vans, so I hope your good luck returns 👍
Love it guys your epic you keep doing you such a inspiration x
Thanks so much, I do hope it inspires people to try to keep travelling as well and aim to impart as much info as possible on our journeys as well :)
Well done guys, bet you're glad that bits over. At least now you can chill a bit now. Take care. Paul
Was certainly a mad dash Paul and very tiring, so very happy to be resting on the beach with friends today :)
thank you for all the informations!
Our pleasure 💯❤️
Wahay you’ve made it , so pleased , soooooo jealous , sunshine seekers 🌊🌻🥳

Thank you. Quality Viewing. Thank you.
Our pleasure Jess :) glad you enjoyed it
Good luck guys.
Thanks!
First time watching your vlog, very interesting, looking forward to the next instalment
Welcome to our channel Mark :)
We aim to get at leats 1 video out a week, so next instalment will be the not so mad dash across from Northern Sapin down to Malaga for a much need rest!
Always very informative and great to watch
All those roads look so familar to me, I do that run frequently as far as Saintes down the A10, glad you made it, now time to relax. Thanks for the update on the changed process when getting into the Tunnel site, it is the same on the French side, everyone has to go into the terminal building to get their 'Covid documentation' checked - even though I had uploaded my docs onto the EuroTunnel website, but it did make the border crossings a bit less painful. I will be heading back down south in a couple of weeks so great info, cheers
Ohh exciting hope you have a great journey too ♥️
You have a really great gig 👍🍀👍
Cheers ✌️
Cheers and we shall indeedy :)
Great stuff guys glad you eventually managed to get away abroad 👍🚐
Thanks and so pleased we did ❤️
I bet the other you tubers van life will now start to travel in Europe once they see this video , especially as you had no hassle at borders or stopped by the police , great video and well made ❤️👍
Thanks so much, I've been trying really hard to learn the editing craft, which is hard but I'm enjoying it. We've several CZcamsrs who are now following and or will be in the near future. What one reads in the media is so often these days not the reality on the ground. Bizarrely we saw not one policeman from border control in Folkestone all the way through to Andulacia and there's certainly nothing like road blocks etc :)
Good you make it with no trouble, nice one. All the best and keep safe guys. Best Regards from me and wife.
Thanks Luis!
Really liked that video, great to see someone in France/Spain, good on ya! Liked Dom’s viva Espana welcome song 😀 Gypsy Kings has to be put on in Spain 👍🏼😀
Haha we did actually play a LOT of Gypsy Kings as we neared and crossed over into Spain :)
@@TheWildlandersOffGrid love it 😂 sometimes when I miss Spain I stick the headphones on and listen to the Gypsies 😀
Hi love your video. And just to wish you all the best with your new life. Take care.
Thanks so much James, really appreciatte that :)
What a humble human beings. Thanks for the video. I very much enjoyed the details and got inspired to make the trip soon. I haven't been to Spain since September 2019 so things just look like "the good old". Damn those road tolls and diesel price sting. Had you known there was no checks you could have taken it a bit easy. But guess what you took one for the team 😉. You could have opted for the ferry option but it is understandable given the generous size of the family it wouldn't have been as smooth as the euro tunnel. Guys have fun and stay weired. Shout out to the little Princess.
Thanks so much, what lovely comments :)
and absolutely with 3 of us and the 4 pets the eurotunnel is so much easier despite the much longer drive, it's mainly that Missy gets VERY, VERY sick on ferries, so we can't do them :(
We'll always be Weirdos ;)
Just subscribed due to this very informative video. I have watched many times before but never subed. Great content, looking forward to seeing the next episode 😜👍
Awesome, thank you! Welcome, and glad you enjoyed and hope to get the next instalment up on Sunday :)
@@TheWildlandersOffGrid enjoy the sunshine, it's actually coming here the weekend. No swimming though. Have fun 😀
Great viewing as usual, you’ve given is the confidence to book a ferry Dover-Calais, heading south through France to Catalonia in our VW T4 and get reunited with our folding camper stored in L’estartit, taking our puppy too, thanks for all the tips n trick, sunshine here we come 23rd July 👍
Thank you and woohoo, enjoy your journey ❤️ in reality its all fine travelling on the ground as it were 💋👌
That's such a useful video so thanks for making it. I hope to do a similar trip mid December, but leisurely I've had me two jabs. I hope it all pays off for you.
Our pleasure and glad it's also useful :)
Yep a lot easier if you've had both jabs, no need to rush then, happy travels back at you for December :)
Ooo the rush ay have a fab time from now on take care look forward to more
It was certainly a mad dash, lol! Especially trying to time the pet certs with the PCR and the euro tunnel booking, but we made it! :)
@@TheWildlandersOffGrid would you consider straight to Spain next time from the UK would that work out cheaper cos il be alone and couldn't do France to spain
Wonderful trip really interesting. Love it
Was a tad manic, but also quite enjoyed it! Glad to be in the sun now resting with friends :)
@@TheWildlandersOffGrid well Deserved after that amazing long drive in 24 hours
I have no intention of driving from UK to Spain, just really enjoy your videos.
Thanks guys….😎👍
Aww thanks! That's nice to hear 😁
Great video, thank you 😀 the first fuel fill up was a crazy price! We are still hopeful that we shall spend a week travelling through France to stay in Spain for a week, then a faster drive back north to the ferry, will make sure we fill up in Uk and Spain to reduce costs a little. Continuing to watch the vid 👍🏼
Thank you :)
And yep Frances fuel prices are crazy!! Hope you get out and enjoy your trip when you do :)
Enjoyed that thanks, scandalous cost of those tests !……..Best wishes and good luck with the search for a property.
Thanks very much 😃 And yes, agreed!
Well done guys 👏👏👏👏👏👍 ... ❤️👵🏼🐾🐾🤠
Thanks so much and glad we made it here! :)
cool vid guys.

Thanks mate, glad to be here and now relaxing :)
Brilliant video enjoy you lucky people 🚐🐕🐕😔🐱🐱
Thanks, Anne :)
and now I'm sat on the beach typing I do feel very thankful we made the trip thus far :)
Cool
Cheers ❤️
Well done did from Murcia to Edinburgh in 3 days few years ago can do but very stressful enjoy
It is certainly quite stressful, more so when you're doing it in reverse back to the UK! But now we are here and can relax :)
Welcome to my past life,I used to do the same run transporting fish from uk to Spanish markets in a 40tonne truck,1 10hr driving day and 1 9hr to my first destination.Usually down that way, late August for Autumn in the m.home, but pandemic and personal health probs have stopped me for last year+,but hopefully this year I'll be back traveling in van.Peage and fuel is pricy but as you've proved you can cover the miles.Good luck with land search and visas, glad you've escaped "plague island" as I hope to do also, very soon👍Paulo
Hey Paulo, sure you'll be back travelling in your van soon, and I hope you're feeling better? Can't wait to start looking for land soon and dealing with the Visa again etc :)
AND we are so pleased to be out of the UK again!
Removing the PCR test and animal health certs, it works out about the same cost as the ferry to Santander.
It does, sadly Missy gets very sick on the sea, so we can't do ferries, equally the chunnell is so much easier with pets too
Glad to see you took my advice eventually. Wise decision.
Haha I can't say thank you as I can't remember what your advice was DOH, remind me please ? But if it was good advice, thank you ;)
@@TheWildlandersOffGrid I advised you to take the route south west from Calais towards Irun. You looked at it and said you didn't fancy it.
Aha yes was way quicker so thank you 👌❤️
Always love a mad dash , we did Dunkerque to Nerja in two days ,same way as you but without the tolls , great drive , have fun but take care .
light weight le halve malaga 23hrs 😆
It was a mad dash!!! tiring, but fun and exciting at the same time, the biggest shock was being in the rain in the UK one moment and a day later it's roasting!
@@GSXRI300 we had to stop at hotel we'd paid for on Spanish border . We didn't have a van at the time .
Keeping my Portuguese fingers and toes crossed for you guys !! Bem vindos à Península Ibérica!! 🇬🇧🇪🇸🇵🇹👨👩👧🐱🐱🐶🐶❤️💙💚💛
Thanks so much Loulou, now in Malaga, and will once rested and spending time with some friends will be on our way to beautiful Portugal :)
@@TheWildlandersOffGrid 🇵🇹🇪🇸🇬🇧❤️💚💙
Agree, so love going through the villages but the amount of roundabouts does rack up the time
Yep we love going through France on the back roads but yep the number of roundabouts etc does slow you down!
Hi guys. Well done. We’ve a home in Sucina in Mercia. We use that route via Ruen and avoid the expensive Le-Mans toll 🙁 I’ve driven none stop once from our hone in Oldham to our Casa in Spain 🇪🇸 in a car and it took 34 hours 🙄 Hopefully we’ll get out again next May. Take care cheers for the trip Stevie.
Yep Le man's expensive 😩 we normally avoid tolls entirely but we're here now so no more tolls first part of the mission is complete 😁
Excellent & detailed video of your dash. Wow, so expensive - did you consider the ferry to Santander instead? Presumably there’s no similar restriction on the time spent in Spain so the drive down to the Costa should be more relaxed. Good luck with the application next time.
We did but can't really as so many pets and Missy gets very sea sick 😩😱
Lol I work in Bognor Regis, great video 👍👍
Haha nothing wrong with bognor 😅
OMG well done 👏and gat vlog 👏
Thanks 😁
Great vlog very informative, was thinking about doing the drive not goin to do it uve filled in all the gaps for me. Sallou !
Thank you ❤️
And happy travels to you to
Bordeux normally both ways i do plan for overnight to cross midnight to 5am. Great stop at Ondres plage.
Thanks and hope you travel there again soon ❤️
France is great for stops so many lovely places ❤️👌🇫🇷
I totally understand your pain driving through France in one day😢 I managed it in two days and as I was the only Driver it was bloody hard watching the lines never stop!!!
Also..£65 TOLL!!!!!! The largest toll we had was €43 on the last leg of French Motorway.
After the journey my Wife asked me if I would be a Tramper… 😂😂 Well Done mate!
Was a, challenge! Especially on so lil sleep and then noone checked so could have gone a bit slower! And don't the lines, on the till roads, go on and on! Where you heading?
@@TheWildlandersOffGrid I was visiting my Parents in NW Spain and it was the first time I drove through Europe instead of just getting a rental car.
Hope you enjoyed your travels, we used to love the drive! ❤️
Great vid, will be very useful for us when we do the same in August. what app did you use to find the aires pls?
Thanks, and, was, a mission! We used park4nite
@@TheWildlandersOffGrid I bet. We are thinking about using the non toll roads
Non toll roads, are great tbh, especially in rural Central areas
That was quite a trek. I brain hurts after about 8 hours, but those french motorways are quite fast.
Dom's brain did hurt! It's currently receiving beer medicine 😂
Mission impossible.Your mission if except it is to Drive to Spain in under 24 hrs lol
You got to have been playing 24hrs to Tulsa on the radio 😅
But I’m glad you got there safely
hi guys, watched all your videos, living in my motorhome with my Thai lady in altea Spain, today 40 degrees, fuel price 1.12 was 1.03 few weeks ago, waiting for next video, staying in Spain on Irish passport.
Awesome, thanks!
Fuel here is still cheaper than France 😆 Next vid is in production!
Nice to see some organic folk!
Them toll road fuel stations are unreal . I took a few barrels of red with me 😂 on the way back I filled up in Spain and both barrels 😎 I get good miles with the remap and more speed a lot of difference to be fair.
I would of followed you over but I’m not doing them tests and the next part of the agenda starts very soon 😬
We defo need a remap, we also have a limiter to 72mphwhich is fine in the uk, but we could have gone 10mph faster on the French motorways and toll roads. At some point, will get that removed and get a decent remap done as well. Sadly we agree entirely on the agenda, it's very concerning, hence the finding offgrid land in Portugal 'plan'. We are against testing but had to follow the crowd just to get out, so we made a big compromise to get here....going to get worse too I fear :(
@@TheWildlandersOffGrid all the best to you guys a lot are buying land in Portugal 😎 I was watching project amber he has a nice bit of land .
There was a bit of land near him cheap he did say what estate agent he used in one of his videos if you want it I’ll find it for you or you could just ask him 👍.
I stayed at the Valiant Sailor recently too, great BBQ ribs!
Question, do the toll booths have and machine for right hand drives? You had a passenger, I will be driving solo, will I need to get out and walk round etc at roll booths?
They do not, so you'd have to climb over seats or get out. Or get a toll card which automatically detects your payment. But barriers remain closed till you've paid so a pain but easy 😊
@@TheWildlandersOffGrid Ah card sounds good, thanks for heads up.
Ye 😎 I’ve done it in under 20hrs to Benidorm get your sprinter remapped haha 😉
Haha yes we stopped quite often which added a lot of time and agree on the remap, commented on that on your previous comment :)
Just discovered your channel - luvin it - if you dont mind me asking, what payment card do you use while travelling in europe ? and do you ever have any problems with it ?
Hi we use revolut when travelling. No issues 😊
Glad you're enjoying our wafflings and welcoming you to the channel ❤️👍
@@TheWildlandersOffGrid We are planning a trip in a few weeks same as you have done, we would normally stay in france but because of all the **** we are now planning spain and or portugal, we are not vaxed so in the same boat as you, the video was like a breath of fresh air to us, were did you get the test kits from ?
Hello Dom and Missy, when traveling from Belgium to Spain, we don't have a 24 hour time frame. Is it specially for UK travelers ? Hope to see you in Spain !
Hi yes as we are not vaccinated we are only allowed to transit through France, it suited us tbh as, want as much time as poss in Portugal to buy land 🇵🇹❤️
Enjoy your travels to
well done and what was the intro music to the video
Thanks, Bob and its Trance by MehiloveSound :)
Hi guys, another brilliant Vlog and the journey was exciting, for us anyway. Good to see you all the other weekend at the South Central meet. Going to Spain myself end of July. Looking forward to the next part of your trip to Malaga. 👌🚐😎🎥
It was very exciting albeit knackering lol. Nice to meet you to and happy travels to you when you get out ❤️
Great journey guys. We will be following you into Spain first week in August. I’m interested in information about your Animal health care certificates has we have been quoted £80 per dog and secondly did you have any checks on the new rules on importing dairy and meat products, we are thinking particular dog food
Thanks, Robert :)
On AHC's, Juan has a Spanish/EU passport so nothing for him, so on the other 3 they were all put on the same single AHC, which only cost £54 for the 3 of them, so its worth shopping around!
At border control leaving the UK, we were asked about our PCR's but nothing else, so no mention of milk dairy or dog food. We had no meat, but had some cheese and lots of dog food and no issue whatsoever, but imagine it's down to luck or who you see
Thanks again. We just need to take some dog food so we can slowly introduce a new brand, dogs and upset stomachs don’t go together in a van lol. Could I just ask, moths ago we had a conversation of the problems of phone contracts and the new 61 day rule. How did you get on with this. Only thing I can think of is multiple SIM cards. Good luck with search for land 👍
Hi Guys, enjoyed your video.
Please advise why 24 hour time frame is important if there is no check at the Spanish border,
Many thanks, Avril.
they've explained in the video why. They're not vaccinated and France only permits them 24hrs to transit due to that.
Hi good video. You didn't show actually getting into France - what checks were there are the French side please?!
Nothing. At Folkestone, our passports were checked at the English and French booths. When we drove off in France, there was nothing. You just drive onto the motorway.
When you cross the border to spain, come off straightway on first exit , there is a pump just there , normally cheaper. That is the address: (Repsol zaiva 2 lugar barrio Behobia 926, 20305 Gipuzka Spain)
Thank you now the mission is complete we seek out the local town pumps normally at least 30 cents cheaper ❤️
Morning 😀 with the dash you did in 24hours was there any Government guidance on what the rules are for transiting? We hopefully will be travelling Spain to Calais at the end of August, we may do a mad 24hr dash to not quarantine in the UK x
Hi, no guidance only on the French Gov site stating max 24hr transit which we almost did bar getting lost at the finish line lol. But in reality we were asked nothing and there were no police anywhere on the roads in France, so in our experience was easy ❤️
@@TheWildlandersOffGrid that’s the funny thing, you are told what the rules are but then no checks to uphold them. I have been looking into the requirements this week and outbound there is little we have to do, entry into the UK from France is isolation and testing, no exceptions. We shall see, glass is half full 😀
Hope the land search is going well x
Top class video explaining everything, especially for unvaccinated who have being led to believe they cannot travel without a pass.
Good luck with your onward journey.
should be locked up
@carole agar thanks so much it's all pretty 'normal' on the road ❤️
@olliedog travels, you think those exercising choice and freewill should be locked up! You think a vaccine without indemnity not approved till 2023 that an individual makes a choice to not take should be locked up... Deary me mate. We've not asked for your advice, nor is this channel about debating our personal choices, or debating covid, vaccines etc it's about our life as vanlifers, travelling etc. So do also research manners, more importantly respect individuals choices, ta
Hope you don't mind me asking how do you insurance your van if you do not have a UK address?
We use my mums address
Can I ask why you didn't get the ferry to Santander?
Hi mate, It's a lot harder with 4 pets vs the ease of the chunnel, but mainly Missy gets very sick on water, so despite the much longer driving, it's just simpler and more pleasant for us, particularly Missy
When you took the train did the dogs have to stay in your van?
Hi yes they do, we just make a, sandwich as it's only 35mins 💚❤️
1/4 tank at AVIA in France likely cost you more than a full tank in Spain - you chose the most expensive fuel in the country!
France was 40 to 45 cents more than Spain, fuel gone up around 29 cents in Spain to 😕 but as you say avia and fuel in France is ridiculously expensive
did you show a map of your route as i cannot find it ?
Hi we did show a map, but we followed Google maps using tolls for the quickest route to the northern part of spain
@@TheWildlandersOffGrid you showed a map in this video ?
Pretty sure we did, if not it's in the next one if you pm me on Facebook ( Dom Van) I can screen shot it for you 👌
Noticed on one of the toll booths you were charged classe 2, you should have been charged classe 1, you can get a refund if you've kept the reciept
No, its class 2.
