Mick Jagger called the Beatles a 4 headed monster. You can see why!

It was so much more than the fame, popularity and hype that accounted for their B sides doing so well. It was the sheer quality of the beautifully written songs and the gorgeous harmonies and other vocal delights. These guys were just geniuses in every imaginable way. I love this journey you’re taking Luke and I appreciate that you’re letting us come along. I’m delighted to see young people appreciating this wonderful music that I grew up with. I have been enjoying this Beatles music for sixty years and will continue to do so until I take my last breath. Thanks Luke. 🌺✌️

"Yes It Is" sounds kinda slow and almost morose, but the harmonies are near the very pinnacle of their vocal harmony work. So complex. This isn't simple parallel thirds. It moves and molds around the melody like like a fine glove.

John delivers the VOICE OF GOD on Slow Down, especially after the solo! When I was first experiencing the Beatles, when I was 5 or 6, this song rocketed me into the stratosphere with excitement!

"Slow Down" just might be my favorite cover they did. I absolutely LOVE George's guitar solo (at 9:34) . I think it may be his best solo from the 1962-64 period. It is definitely Harrison on the solo. He's doing a Carl Perkins tribute with that solo. And John's vocal is stellar. When he comes screaming out of the guitar solo (at 10:10) it's one of my favorite John vocal moments of any song he did.

Okay, the American Capital records album called Something New had these two songs on them, Matchbox and lLow Down, 4 songs from the Hard Days Night album, and a German version I Want to Hold Your Hand, and 4 other songs...."Yes It Is came 2 American albums later on The Beatles 6th album, or on the English Album Beatles for Sale.

I only wish Slow Down was longer. Just when it feels like it’s gonna really take Off it ends. I know that was the thing back then-keep it short. Love Ringo’s drumming and John’s vocals…

When I saw the titles you were reviewing in this video, I was curious to see your reaction to the third song "Yes It Is". As an aficionado of close three-part harmonies, I've always loved to hear this song. Of course, the lads nailed the blend so well, and I'm pleased that you appreciated it too.

"Yes It Is" is one of my faves. I actually had the single! (I was in Grade 2!) Have you heard the cover by Don Henley on lead, and J. D. Souther, Timothy B. Schmit, and Danny Kortchmar on harmonies? Yes, it is really, really gorgeous. And not many can do covers of Beatles songs.

Just loving this series, Luke. For me these first two songs will forever be indelibly linked to the 'Something New' album I owned as a kid. This was long before I learned about how Capitol was re-engineering the Beatles' output to squeeze more product and $$$ out of the consumer. But I wore the grooves out of that album (partly because I couldn't play our copy of 'A Hard Day's Night' anymore because the grooves on that one WERE worn out! 😄) I hadn't heard "Yes It Is" until I got the Past Masters CDs because I never owned the 'Beatles VI' album. But what a sublime arrangement for 3-part harmony. The Anthology includes an early take of just John with an acoustic guitar and the quality of the song is easily apparent in such an early, embryonic state.

I really appreciate your rundowns on these Beatles songs. I can tell you are listening deeply and taking in everything in a genuine way. To me, every Beatles song has merit - even the silly ones. However, I adore their early music. Everything from Sergeant Pepper on is amazing but for some reason it’s Revolver and the ones that came before that make me want to dance and sing.

Yes, I don't think many drummers sang back in those days. I think of Karen Carpenter & Phil Collins for drummers who sang lead. It was a nice cover. Love Matchbox. John's voice is just totally rockin' on "Slow Down"! I just love it. "Yes it is" is very pretty with beautiful harmonies & I love John's individual vocals. ❤️ your reactions.

Crazy to think that the Beatles always wanted to be like all the Motown artists and everyone else wanted to like them. Even heroes have heroes

    • @jnagarya519
      @jnagarya519 Před 8 měsíci

@@jamesramirez8685 Carl Perkins, author of "Matchbox," recorded for Sun Records, not Motown.
"The Beatles" admired both white and Black performers; they loved popular R&B before Motown began being a factor in 1962. So it wasn't like they "wanted to be like all the Motown artists". Harrison once used the pseudonym "Carl Harrison" -- his guitar hero being Carl Perkins, who was originally "country and western" when it was still called "hillbilly" and "honky tonk". Ringo's favorite US music was "country and western" -- which was made in a CITY in the EAST.
John and Paul, at the least, loved white performers Buddy Holly and "The Everly Brothers". And John praised Brenda Lee (who began in "country and western" and later returned to it) as having the "perfect" rock and roll voice.
John and Paul, at the least, focused on GOOD SONG WRITING, regardless the source -- whether Blues/R&B, "country and western," or middle-of-the-road (MOR) lounge/schmaltz/jazz.
They responded emotionally and learned from the best, without prejudice.

Ringo sang the wrong words to this Carl Perkins song. The correct line is: "I'm sitting here wondering - will a matchbox hold my clothes". It's saying how the guy has basically no clothes except what he is wearing. He's a POOR man. He is so poor... that a matchbox could be used as a suitcase for him.

I think Spike Jones (of Spike Jones and his City Slickers) may have been one of the earliest drummers to sing. Do you remember singer/drummer Levon Helm of The Band singing the line from Up on Cripple Creek,
"Well now me and my mate were back at the shack
We had Spike Jones on the box
She said, "I can't take the way he sings
But I love to hear him talk"
