Dance of the Tagmata - Epic Byzantine Music

- Arrangement by Farya Faraji, featuring oud and sazi by Edu Giro. Artwork by J.F Oliveras. Please note that this isn't reconstructed historical music, it's modern Greek music with a historical theme. None of the melodies here are mine, I only arranged traditional passages on the violin and added my own instrumentation to it.
The tagmata were various sections of the forces of the Eastern Roman Empire whose function and arrangement evolved over time.
Whilst all my other Byzantine music used variants of the Greek folk lyras so far as bowed instruments, I wanted to pay homage to the recently introduced violin from the last two centuries. After entering the musical continuum of the Eastern Mediterranean, the Western violin became a central instrument of these cultures under the Ottoman Empire and the neighbouring regions, and its versatility in terms of articulation as well as lack of frets meant it was a perfect fit for the modal musical systems of the region. The violin has now almost displaced the traditional lyra except in select regions like Crete. The violin heard here plays passage in different traditional modes of Greek music descending directly from Ancient Greek modality, and whose nomenclature is inherited from Ottoman Turkish nomenclature (itself partly based on the nomenclature of Arabic and Iranian maqam systems), these modes being: Ussak, Rast, Sabah, Nihavent and Hicaz.
I added a santouri, as well as a supporting oud and sazi played by Edu Giro, and accompanied the whole thing with a chord progression on the island lauto as is typically the case with modern Greek folk music, being largely based on simple power chord progressions. - Hudba

Imagine a history movie about Rome for which Farya composes soundtrack 🤩
One can dream. Also, a historically accurate one, please, without all the Romans wearing the typical freaking wristbands or bracelets you see in every single Hollywood production set in the ancient world, for which there exists no evidence whatsoever.

By the way any thoughts of making songs about "Five good emperors"?
Give time to the man. I'm sure we'll get more Symphonies.

It's based on greek rules of music and the tagmata is still a word used in the greek military. Please the song isn't special.
That's all you need to know.
@Imperialis_Aquila good to hear what it is, if i like it then its special so 'not special' would be your opinion, thanks for letting me know
These were the professional troops of the Empire, standing troops rather than conscripts.

I have been waiting for an Eastern Roman song for so loong. Cheers Farya!
Dropping epic byz music right before bday, I cannot be more satisfied 😍
I love how much more composed and orderly the Dance of the Tagmata is compared to the more energetic and laid back Dance of the Akritai, really highlights the different characteristics of the professional imperial juggernauts and the free spirited border guards. But an Empire as vast as that of the Romans requires both kinds of troops to function and prosper, as both have their merits.
Dance of the Themata when? 👀
This actually sounds fairly laid back and energetic as well tbh. It's basically various tunes of islander syrtos, which is a very common circle dance. You'd typically hear this in festivals, weddings etc.
@@rhomaioscomrade definitely, it's another Dance song after all, just saying that it's slightly less so than the Akritai track. As in if "Tagmata" is syrtos, "Akritai" resembles horon more. Probably didn't articulate myself very well.
Im trying to figure out smth im from albania which borders greece and we were also part of the byzantines for centuries does my last name Mata come from the byzantine military unit could it have any connection could anyone assist me in finding out

Another great song! I might be new to your channel but your music has definitely made me more passionate about traditional music. Seriously I don't think you have ever made a bad song, all of them are great in their own ways, reaching to different audiences. That's the beauty of music and the work you do🙏
I second this, Farya has never made bad music. Everything he makes is a banger
I think these kind of songs by farya are the best. They feel like something you’d hear walking into a medieval taverna just sitting there drinking your tsipouro
Yes!
You have become my most important music teacher! And hearing/listening has been just important as long as I can remember (because my eyes are very poor). Thank you so much, Farya Faraji! Your music and your lessons allow me travelling the world
I found your byzantine music while learning for my graduation exams from history and they really helped me to enjoy the whole process even more. Your songs still hold a special place in my heart, thank you for doing this!
This will make a fine addition to my collection
You are the "Mozart" of this time. Very nice my friend! Your music speaks in my byzantine heart! Poly oreos! XP kai AW :)
Farya's arrangements show a deep understanding of each geography's traditional music. In case of Greece, Farya has really done a thorough search.
Bowing to your skill and knowledge with every piece, Master Farya 🤌👏👏👏
I feel like i am in my home village.
More "serious" sounding, nontheless the feeling is very much "I vibe to this", than the Dance of the Akritai, but also I get a more "imposing" sensation, more stalward in a sense. Gotta love how you manage to give each historical military force its own distinct feeling, straight out of a Total War game.
Πολλες ευχαριστιες αγαπητέ Farya.😊merci bien.
I just had a very good meal with friends, a lot of good things to drink, fine desserts and now that all our guests have left, Farya has published a new banger. Good times
Play it next time you receive guests.

I like that your music isn't as grim and cold as it is often a thing in stereotipical medieval/ancient/viking-themed movies and other media. It always has some cheerful and joyful notes like in folk dance music and yet still sounds epic. Thank you very much for these pieces of art, and may all muses of the mount Parnassus hail you with throat singing!

The Imperial Tagmata ready to stand at Basileus's side! Epic job once again! To notice that many Byzantine military terms are still in use in the modern Greek army, like the Tagmata (ταγματα, ταγματαρχης etc), Strategos, Stratioti, and even the popular term for the populations in the frontiers, is still "Akritai".

Farya, the hero of our age
I think the next logical step will be something about the comitatenses since you've done marian legions and tagmata
also tzakones (laconian marines) for that medieval spartan vibe and buccelari for that roman horse archer mixed with a cataphract which were "recruited from Romans, Persians, Goths, and Huns so you can mix the music styles
I dont know, but this music like have connection with hikanatoi. If they are in peace, tagmata will dance with this. If they are fighting, Hikanatoi in Charging.
Hikanatoi were shock troops
The tagmata were the line troops
From all of the traditions you’ve explored, I think Greece slaps the hardest.

Love this piece. I'm not a music expert, but I've noticed I have an ear for it- first thing that comes to mind when I listen to this is a track from the Turkish show magnificent century. Not sure if you were inspired by that or not, but i couldn't help be like "Oh wow, cool, I notice similar beats to a specific beats from a track from that's show's OST" Anywho, hope you have a nice day. Keep making good music :)
It's just because it's typical Greek music, and Greek and Turkish music are of the same region. So it would be no different than me making Scottish music that incidentally sounds like something from Braveheart; shared cultural roots from a common context :)
