The song is specifically about the viking invasion of the British Isles from 794 Ad, the land of the midnight sun / ice and snow / where the hot springs flow ( volcanic springs) are all references to scandinavia. The singer Robert Plant is very interested in early British history so you get references to it in various songs also Brit. literature in others- these are 4 intelligent men who are master musicians so you get excellent songs on a wide variety of subjects. They also sparkle with humour - they had just done concerts in Iceland and had a very nice time so they wrote this song for fun. The outstanding guitar playing is Jimmy Page who is the founding member and the producer. The drummer is John Bonham widely regarded as the greatest rock drummer and the base / keyboard player is John Paul Jones. They are also strongly influenced by the early american blues men and dounmatched blues rock, but they do folk /acoustic rock, they get very funky and then their are songs which are uniquley them , you will need to discover stairway to heaven hopefully the live version at Madison square garden from 1973 . ON the subject of young people becoming old , they did a reunion concert in London in 2005 called celebtation day when they were in their 60's you should try Kashmir from that, age is no limit when you are this talented. 20 million people wanted tickets for that concert. Jimmy Page is 80 now and is still the coolest man on the planet. You are going to be very pleasantly suprised- by everything they did.

Robert Plant was from my town in the West Midlands of England, along with many other famous bands and musicians of that era especially. It was a wonderful time for music lovers. John Bonham's drumming is even better on the opening track of their debut album. "Good times bad times" has a base drum thundering out in 4/4 time with triplets pressed in for emphasis. Unlike now, he is doing this with one foot using only one pedal. Fools in the rain is polyrhythmic - He plays the high hat in 4/4 time with swing triplets, intermitting ghost notes with the snare in a 12/8 time. At the SAME time, he plays a half time swing shuffle on the base and snare. Four appendages and two different time signatures at the same time. He keeps this all together despite the bass guitar and 6 string guitar playing a 12/8 signature. Giving this song a syncopated triplet feel. kind of a Latin swing, Perdie shuffle feel.

Thank you for reacting to Led Zeppelin and making their classic songs feel new again.
John Bonham. often named the greatest rock drummer of all time, came to be known as “The Hammer,” as in “the hammer of the gods.” He used custom made sticks that were larger and heavier and struck his oversized drums very hard.
That iconic riff, the chilling wail of the opening vocal, and the lyrics take me back to when I was 12 or 13 years old and hospitalized with frozen feet. It was actually the onset of Raynaud’s Disease that came after a winter camping experience and a long day of outdoor ice skating. This song tells a story and it helped my younger self get through a difficult time.

Welcome to Zeppelin. Apart from their masterwork, Stairway to Heaven, to get the full range of their brilliance, you have to do Kashmir, Going to California, Rock & Roll, and Ramble On.

I think you are ready for "When the Levee Breaks", a song written after the great Mississippi flood in 1927, that trapped tens of thousands of people on levees, for weeks. Also try "Ramble On", a sweet tribute to the "Lord of the Rings trilogy"! " Your Time is Gonna Come", another Blues based song, and one of my all time favorites. I'm 73, been Rockin' with the Zepp since my senior year in high school! 🤘😊👍

This was written in Iceland after the 1st concert in a tour....The band was so impressed by the hospitality they recieved, it inspired them to write a song about the ancestors of that island nation whom had also played a large role in the history of their own land.

That was the first song I heard by Zep when I was 12, in 1971. Still one of my favourites, and this is surely my favourite version.
And: It is so reassuring to listen to someone from the younger generation listening to "my" music, and actually understanding nowing a thing or two about how music (and some other things) work.

Thank you for this. Enjoyed your reaction. Made me realise how lucky I am to have lived through the time when they were current.
The trouble is that we took it all for granted. They stood out as a great band, but there were many, many great bands bursting onto the music scene at that time and we all assumed it would go on forever.

I personally am more of an adult contemporary, singer songwriter type guy but this does wonderful things for the circualtion. On another quick note, I was living in Vegas when the M resort opened and thay had a blimp with a huge tv on it...and yes, I called it the LED Zeppelin.

I love seeing young people realize some of the best songs were written when I was growing up. I was nine when this came out. And I am so lucky I head some very cool friends and relatives who turned me onto bands like Zep. Absolutely loved covering this one live when I was still singing.
This is only two years removed from "Let it Be" by The Beatles. Black Sabbath were a couple of LPs into their career as well. So much great hard rocks was starting to gain notoriety. YES was on their third year as a band. Pink Floyd had their first hit in 67.
The amazing style differences that were born from the late 60's. Never gonna see that again I fear.

Led Zeppelin are masters of musical diversity. And while they helped pave the way for heavy rock/metal, most bands following them couldn't achieve the beautiful synthesis of electric/acoustic, the heavy lead and the lighter than air zeppelin that these guys were capable of.
