  • Zelda's voice hasn't exactly been consistent. Nintendo have changed her voice time and time again, seemingly on a whim. Go behind the scenes to answer the question: Why doesn't Princess Zelda sound like she used to?

You forgot to mention that Nintendo wanted Zelda in Breath of the Wild to sound British English because of the British Royal family. Nintendo chose Patricia Summersett an American voice actress to do Zelda voice and wanted her to put on the British accent. Patricia Summersett was a bit scared and thought fans wouldn't like her doing British accent as it'll sound fake, Nintendo wanted to keep her. So Patricia Summersett had a friend who was British and got her to help nail the accent. Patricia Summersett even said her friend was confused why didn't Nintendo just hire someone British?

    • @CordyBrush

From what I have read online, most American companies are scared of hiring British people for British accents because Americans have difficulty understanding them if they are genuine.

Things like Link's Crossbow Training, Cadence of Hyrule and Hyrule Warriors are the spin-offs. Just as a clarifying note, because iirc you had a similar framing in the link voice video. Phantom Hourglass is a direct sequel to Wind Waker, so it makes sense to have the characters keep the same voice. Spirit Tracks is a jump ahead in time, and the characters aren't the same incarnations, so it makes sense to have different voices-even if it is the same art style.

I still find it kind of weird, though. For Link, every single different link, regardless of art style, is a different VA (triforce heroes not included), but for Zelda, her VA was recast for different Zeldas, regardless of art style. Sure, it could be the reason, but if her VA was recast for different zeldas with different art styles, while change for the one with the same art style?

    • @jmporkbob
      @jmporkbob Před 3 lety +33

@@Rogeryoo Ocarina/Majora Link have the same voice. As do Wind Waker/Phantom Hourglass Link.
Yeah, they are not always consistent in their casting, and some of that has to do with the voice actors as much as their own desires. But in the case of the same Link & Zelda voices existing for both WW/PH and then both being recast for ST, there is at least a plausible line of reasoning. I mean they could have just used the exact same voice clips for the 2nd DS game if they'd wanted.
Now that I think about it though, Ocarina/Majora & Wind/Phantom are the only 2 times in the main series that the characters are canonically the same individuals (after voice acting started being included). And they were consistent with keeping them the same voice both times, not just Link but also Zelda.

The Ocarina of Time voice for Zelda will always be my favorite. She had a way of sounding like a captured maiden but also a powerful sage all at the same time, which is a tough feat to pull off. I'm not a huge fan of the BOTW Zelda's voice in English, since it is a bit low and I never pictured Zelda as British. But that's certainly not the voice actresses fault. They cast her because that was the voice the higher ups wanted for their Zelda. She was just giving the voice they hired.

It makes botw's Zelda much different and easy to differentiate with the other Zeldas because I thought if they all have similar voices then it will make me think that they are all the same person across all games (which they are not unless mentioned in game). Overall, botw Zelda's voice and accent is giving me a sense of familiarity in a way that it's based in irl british accent but not too perfect, which kinda make sense that it sounds weird since it's a fantasy game (I just imagine that's how hylian royalty were taught to speak) At least that's how I view it.

I have some information about the French voice actress for botw who is Adeline Chetail, she's a popular voice actress in my opinion, like she voiced Ellie in the last of us and Mei in overwatch and some Ghibli movie like Arietty, she started voice acting at a really young age she was 7years old when's she started, but all I known about the botw audition is the fact that it was super secretive too, they just told her that she was a princess of a certain land and that was it, when she knew she was taken for the role and finally told that it was Zelda she knew she had a big role to play and I think she was "scared" of doing bad and not representing well Zelda. Patricia Summerset's Zelda doesn't resemble original Japanese version, but it very unique. I'd recognize her as Zelda any day of the week, whereas original one kinda blends with all other anime girl voices

I think by TotK she had a better grasp on not losing accent. I think the Japanese Zelda VA is great, for Skyward Sword, because of that character's portrayal as a cheerier childhood friend, but less fitting for how Zelda is portrayed as being more dynamic in BotW/TotK with a more thorough arc.

German Voice Actress for Zelda in BOTW:
    Julia Casper
She is an Actor, Voice Actor, and Audiobook Reader from Hamburg, Germany.
Her acting career started 2007, and since then she did about 20 movies/series, but nothing special.
Her Audiobook career started 2013, with the famous kidsbook about Conni, and later the "Chaosschwestern" (Chaos-sisters) series.
Her voice-acting carrer contains mostly of syncro work for diverse movies and series, maybe most noteable: Yuuko Kobayashi "as Masako" in Naruto Shippuden the movie, Mai Nakahara "as Suzune Ichihara" in The Irregular at the Magic School, Manami Numakura "as Otoya Takechi" in Akuma no Riddle, and many more.
Her work on BOTW seems to be her first work as an voice actor for video games.
Hope this brings some light about the German Voice Actress!

I think Skyward Sword’s Zelda is my absolute favorite iteration of the princess. She’s one of the few Zeldas that makes me feel invested in beating the game so I can see her again. I got the game when I was about 6 or so, and the first time I heard her singing, I felt so calm and happy. Yu Shimamura has a beautiful voice and I’m glad they brought her back for BotW.
Side note: I have to agree, even as an American, that Patricia Somerset’s acting and her accent were a bit off, but she’s not terrible, and I now know her as the official English voice of Zelda, so that’s awesome.

I believe the recastings for Spirit Tracks can be chopped up to the Link and Zelda in the game NOT being the same ones from WW and PH, despite the art style.

I don't like Zelda's voice in English for BOTW, I play with the Japanese voice acting because I think the Japanese VA portrays the emotion much better, especially on that crying scene for example. Much more visceral imo

yeah I totally agree, but you can’t blame the actress tho. it was Nintendo’s fault for voice directing her making her sound that way.
and yeah, I totally agree that the Japanese is a lot better. but there were times that Patricia did do a nice job for Zelda, for example in that one cutscene where Zelda was praying to the goddess of statue is the only good thing abt her English voice

To be fair, the Japanese voice actors overacts in the crying at the end. It’s still better than the English crying, but I still expect a better match with the face than that.

@@flytothemountains824 never blamed the VA tho or that she didn't have her moments, just preferred the Japanese interpretation for her:) I do look forward to hear what Zelda's voice may sound like in the upcoming games; I think there'd be great comparison material between the games as there is plenty of spoken dialogue to listen to going forward I hope! ^u^
